OK, it's now Nov. 2009, and I've just purchased more replacement filters, resulting in this updated review.
But this review is in the form of a series of photos, since pics are worth 1000 words:

(note that my latest purchase of China-made filters have dark holes rather than white holes as do the USA ones)
http://powerpics.tripod.com/culligan/culliganfilter s.html

And below is my review as of last month:
===================================

Top quality (but make sure as soon as you buy replacement filters to check whether ALL the holes on the side are WHITE, NOT BLACK. Any filters with even one black hole would be defective. If there's black showing thru, then its just filtering thru the white holes but not any of the black ones).

As for the other reviewer's bad rating, note the Culligan filter housing has lasted me for years, so disregard what s/he states about the metal lever falling off - it's total baloney!

By comparison, in years past, I've owned a Brita Pitcher as well as Brita Faucet Mount. The pitcher tasted extremely bitter to me, so I just threw it out. The Brita Faucet Mount was cumbersome, and overpriced due to their unecessary fancy frills (i.e. the light indicators etc.) Who needed a "catalytic converter" in a car, which just added to its cost?

Similarly, I prefer the basics, rather than an overpriced filter with unasked-for frills, which you need to keep replacing after 40 gallons or so. I mean, compare that to Culligan's 200 gallons & it's a no-brainer! Why the heck more people haven't bought these, I'll never know. I guess it's for the same reason why Bill Gates' marketing baloney made Microsoft big-time with the majority of gullibles, rather than Apple (which had been way superior at that time.

Sadly enough, I was contemplating purchasing an Oreck XL, but after reading the reviews, I decided not to.

I recently purchased a RTA( ready to assemble) sofa from the simplicty sofa company. I was amazed at the design and the workmanship of this product. I have a room with a difficult entry and I was very worried about how I would get a comfortable sofa into this space. The simplicity product slid right in with no problem and was easily and quickly assembled into a sturdy but a attractive piece of furniture. It is a real credit to ingenuity and craftmanship.

In addition the company customer relations were excellent. When dealing with the company, I felt they were sincerely interested in delivering a first class product with first class service.

My $550 Riccar 8955 only lasted 4.5 years. When I bought it I was told by Moley Vacuum in Evanston that if I bought this vacuum I would not regret it because it was a quality machine. After 4.5 years the wheels no longer rolled smoothly.
Moley said it would cost over $200 to repair just the wheel problem and that the part alone was $160.
I said no thanks.
I'd have been better off buying a cheap throw away maching instead of an expensive throw away machine. Also, it was difficult to reach Riccar directly because my Riccar manual did not give a phone number for support.
