Francoise is my favourite tennis player of all time. She was unique and played naturally her own way. Pity she did not win wimbledon. She deserves to be remembered as one of the Tennis Greats.

The female Federer. Won on every surface convincingly. Didn't have a losing head to head record against any top ranking player. A truly remarkable human being. Simply the best female singles player of all time.

It looks like Federer and Nadal may have a new stud to worry about at the top of the men's tennis world. Del Potro hits with force, is 6'6", and is only 20 years old. He also just became the third human being in the history of the world to beat Nadal and Federer in the same tournament.

I absolutely love Serena Williams. She's so passionate about tennis and winning that unfortunately sometimes she can come off looking so aggressive when to the contrary she actually isn't. When Serena gets into that tennis ring it's like a beast has been unleashed and if her opponent is not as powerful as she is you can only look on in pain at what their fate will be. Venus and herself have changed women's tennis for life. They've achieved a lot and are without a doubt going down in history as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Even when she retires I think Venus and herself will make excellent commentators or coaches. They've made an elite sport attainable and watchable for many and that to me deserves respect. Now that Kim Clijsters is back it's going to get even more interesting and last night was proof of that.

I still lover her, but she should get another or new coach...she obviously has tuned the current coach out. Too many double faults as her shoulder gets tired out there...she should be doing better.
Love the "grunt/scream" LOL

Extremely skillful tactician who played with great flair . An excellent singles player aswell as being consistantly at the very top in doubles . Francoise had a long 20 year career and won many singles and doubles titles . In singles she was very consistant too being ranked year end in the world top 20 for an amazing 15 years 1963 - 1978 -9 of them in the top 10 - peaking at 3 in 1967 . Performed equally well on all surfaces with perhaps an edge on clay at her peak which gave her more time to set up her shots . Possessed a full range of shots - a fantastic accurate backhand and very effective lob which she would use often early in a rally - even following a return of her serve when the opponent had tried to move in following her slow serve . Amazing to watch her sometimes win a point like this and totally frustrate her opposition who had moved in to punish her serve . They were in trouble unless they could put the ball away completely . Talking of her famous serve it could be more difficult to handle than it looked . Yes it was slow but often looped and spun very deep in the service box it could still keep her opponent back and Francoise was ready with a full all court repertoire to attack the reply . Fun and entertaining too with just a little attitude on display some of her strokes were breathtaking to watch . She would squat for a low shot with her behind touching the court ! - or kneel on one knee for a backhand pass down the line squeezing it between her opponent and the line rather than going cross court . The opponent then was usually wrong footed and could not believe what she had done - or else the ball was just straight past them squeezed past with inches to spare . Though she stayed often on or near the baseline she would also often come in to fiercly put the ball away at incredible angles slamming it with great force so there was no chance of a pick up from the other side of the net . Shame she won only one major grand slam singles but she did win many more titles including 4 Swiss open singles at Gstaad and 5 French ladies doubles in a row 67-71 . 2 US doubles not one as stated here - over 60 doubles titles and 26 singles titles and many more finals and semis - remarkably consistant over a very long period . She had many wins over top players and was a particular nightmare for Billy Jean King and beat Martina Navratilova 6-1 6-1 in 1976 at the Colegate Inaugural singles when Francoise was almost 34 years of age and Martina was world number two . At her peak it took the very best to defeat her in singles and often not even then . When she was older she was a dangerous floater nobody wanted to play who could still produce upsets on her day . In doubles she was still right at the top until she retired in 1979 winning the Bridgetown world doubles that year .

some posts are so stupid, that i cant pass them by. billie jean got her most notoriety from beating an old man ? that is just about the dumbest comment i have seen in a long time. why in the heck do you suppose that she was playing him, in the first place ?

she won 12 Grand Slam singles titles, 16 Grand Slam women's doubles titles, and 11 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. this is where her notoriety comes from - geesh !!!

she and margaret court ruled tennis for quite awhile. chris evert was not as good, that is for sure. she had no net game.

you cant really compare different people from different eras. i read another stupid comment in the laver thread, about the players of that era not being as good as the ones of today.

the major change in any sport is not the ability of the athletes. we have been around for many millions of years. our athletic ability does not change in a generation. what does change is the equipment. that is really true in the game of tennis.

most people making reviews have never played with a wooden racket. you simply cant compare that with todays rackets. there is so much difference that the best high school players of today could beat the best pros from the 60s if the high schooler got to play with a racket from today, and the pro had to play with a wooden racket.

a wooden racket could not generate anywhere near the pace, and would have a hard time dealing with a ball going as fast as today. you had to hit in the exact center of a wooden racket, or you would get an off-hit ball. the complete racket face of today is a sweet spot.

as i said, there simply is no comparison at all. you always have to look at players in the same time frame. margaret court is the only player in the same league as billie jean, for that time. margaret had a lot more size. billie jean was better, mentally.
