One thing that I've come to realize is that in life, nothing is for certain. Circumstances change, people change...this simply isn't a stagnant existence.
It's best to constantly evaluate and reevaluate your stances, and don't be afraid to admit that you're wrong sometimes. That means challenging your own personal dogmas and expanding your intellectual horizons.
In most situations, there are many different shades of truth--the facts are usually far more nuanced and multifaceted. There is truth, but a lot of times it isn't found in the usual spots (ideology, organized religion, and other major institutions). The rabble is a hotbed of reactionary opinion and I generally try to stay away from it.
My advice: always question underlying assumptions and don't be afraid to go against the crowd on occasion.
