Textbooks

This section is for textbook reviews. Some textbooks are written in a clear, easy to read, and understandable language, while others could be cryptic and a pain to read. Does what's on your syllabus help mystify or demystify the subject being taught? Sound off here.

It's not a horrible linear algebra book, as it does teach you the basics such as matrices, row operations, various transformations, eigenvalues and such. But it's title is rather misleading. It doesn't teach you much about applications at all. After taking a course in linear algebra using this book, I thought I had a decent grasp on the subject. I didn't really learn linear algebra that a physicist would use until I took a math methods course when I got to grad school.

Hall does a great job of explaining the physics behind music and sound in general in this well written, easy to read book. The mathematical prerequisites for understanding this book are minimal, high school algebra with some familiarity with logarithms are all that is required.

Pretty good grad level quantum book. Sakurai died before the book was completely finished but the editor finished Sakurai's manuscript and published it.

Well written book on particle physics aimed at undergraduates, which few authors are willing to attempt. This was a great reference book for my grad level particle physics course. I do wonder if the book is truly accessible to its target audience, but it is a great book anyway.

Covers a wide range of topics, but chooses quantity over quality. Tends to leave the reader a bit confused by skipping over the finer details. This book could easily be extended to three or four volumes, just by covering all the same topics but in more detail.

This is a very good textbook for two semesters of introductory physics (requires calculus) at the college level. If you wanted, there is probably enough material to teach a third semester from this book. There are many books out there that cover the same material, but this is the best one I've seen in terms of organization, explanation of the material, and the number of good examples.

Grad level stat mech book which covers a variety of topics, but somewhat lacking in the more non-trivial examples. It has all the necessary information, but like all stat mech books, one of the most boring reads you'll ever find.

Undergraduate level stat mech book which contains all the essential material, but like every stat mech book I've ever seen, it's dry as dust.
