Contains almost everything you don't want your dog to eat. I will list the things that AREN'T bad for your dog; That will be easier - beef and liver and garlic powder. Everything else in this most horrible product is BAD. If there is a worse dog treat on the market, I don't know what it is. I'm only sorry there isn't a choice for zero stars!!

I have one and they are very sweet and loyal to their owners. Mine clings to me and gets upset when i leave him. He doesn't shed and was very easily trained. It took him about a month to learn to potty outside. The fur gets matted easy so you do have to groom them about every 6 weeks and brush them daily. My dog is very protective of me.

Review Icon ayn reviewed Bil-Jac in Dog Food Brands:
I train dogs for a living, as such I am often hounded by many dog food reps trying to get me to push their brand. I get a lot of free gifts (bribes) like t-shirts, totes and food and treat samples. I keep the shirts and totes, because, hey! a free t-shirt! The food samples I give to friends if they already happen to feed their dog that product. Bil-Jac is the only sample that I will actually give to my dogs. I find the ingredients and cooking process to be pretty decent, not enough to switch from their current brand, but good enough for a change every now and then.
People always want me to tell them that there is one food that is perfect for every dog and that is not true. Some foods are great for some dogs and terrible for others. Do your research and find the brand that is right for your dog. Vets are one resource, but not always the best, take their advice in conjunction with others. Pet nutritionists are another resource, but again, not always the best. I know a lot of pet nutritionists, and most (not all) of them got their training from an 80 hour course, usually sponsered by one brand of food or another. Most do not know more than the average person who has done their research. I do not say this to disparage, but to let you know that you should take their info with a grain of salt. The ingredient list on food is good, but leaves out most of the story. The internet is a terrible place to get information on pet food. It may be convenient, but is full of misinformation and contradictions. If you really want to know about dog food, it is worth it to drop some money on real research based on actual studies.
If you feed your dog this brand or any other brand, and your dog is thriving, stick with what works.

My corgis love it and the ingredients can't be beat! This food is great for their coats and they seem to have more energy too. My Pem is a flyball dog, so nutrition is really important to her sport.

OK – I am going to get on my soapbox for a few minutes because if I don’t get this out I am going to explode!! We have been feeding our beautiful Newfoundland dogs Nutro Lamb and Rice for a few years now. It has been a great food because it does not have any chicken or chicken by product. Pepper, our male Landseer, is severely allergic to chicken. If he even looks at chicken pictures he gets sick – ok maybe that is an exaggeration BUT he is deathly allergic. Over the past 4 month we have noticed that he has been losing a lot of weight. Then he started losing his hair and chewing up his body. He looks emancipated and very near death. W finally looked at the food bag and they have added chicken fat as an ingredient. I still had an older bag and we compared the two lists. Nope – no chicken fat in the older bags. I mean that would be like making pancake mix and suddenly putting peanuts in the mix and not telling anyone. So anyone who loved pancakes and continued to eat them with the peanuts would be dead. How is this even legal. I guess it doesn’t matter since it is just a dog. I was not sure if we could even save Pepper because even his breathing was labored. We switched to Blue Buffalo Lamb and Brown Rice and didn't even mix it so they could get used to it. I wanted all that poison Nutro out of my house. All the dogs love the new food. Pepper is getting his shiny coat back and is gradually gaining weight. He also is not chewing up his body anymore. Blue Buffalo has a guarantee of NO chicken or chicken by product in their food.

I'm so confused right now. I just recently lost my 12 yr rottie. She had eaten pedigree her whole life. She had healthy stools, coat, etc. She had developed fatty tissue deposits in her later year, but they are known for that. On oct 28 she had what I believe was a heart attack, she died very quickly, I felt blessed. Here is where it gets confusing. I am taking care of my mom's dogs and they have eaten pedigree as well their whole lives with no problems to speak of. But they have just changed the formula, and have added red, green dyed pieces. My mothers 4 yr old sheep dog mix "sam" has fallen terribly ill. He has quit eating and is on deaths door step. The vet (who saw him twice this week) has been over seeing him as we force feed/hydrate him. I had noticed a bit too late however the green pieces in the food looked as if they were graying, IT WAS MOLD! I have 2 food storage containers in 2 different rooms in the house ( due to having my rottie as well) and BOTH are molded. There is no way in hell, that both containers molded for dampness reasons (in the house). And now that they added the dyes, I am at a loss. Years ago I lost both my cats to the Whiska's poisoned cat food packets, and now this. Did I kill my 12 year old dog feeding her pedigree? Why is sammy so sick from it? NO answers from pedigree, they won't even try to contact me back. I am now searching for a dog food that I can afford (being I provide for my newest dog as well as my mothers)...
I am about to just make and freeze my own, at least then I'll be killing us all, because we'll be eating the same stuff (meats/veggies). Just love them every day, and be thankful for every minute you have with them. I hope our government will strive to make our pets food safer and affordable. Please don't hesitate to speak out and post reviews, it does help.
Thank you,
The Lachapelle Family (in memory of sassy)

We had our Pointer/Lab cross puppy on Eagle Pack and found he was shedding a lot and his stool was very soft. We asked our pet store associates if there was another food that would be better, and they suggested Nutro Natural Choice. Ever since he has been shedding less, his stool is solid and regular. We get compliments on how nice is coat is and he loves it too!

Ok, first of all a lot of you need to do your research before blabbing away at how bad this dog food is. AAFCO has certain criteria on what has to be on dog food bag labels, but the dog food companies have sneaky little ways of getting around these standards. Yes, ingredients are listed by DRY weight on the bag in descending order. But look carefully at some of the ingredients lists on other dog food brands. Some will have a meat listed at the very top of the ingredients list, but check out the other ingredients too. In order to conform to the demands of consumers who want a meat at the top of the list, the dog food companies will break down ingredients such as rice into subcategories and list it several times to hide the fact that the food contains more rice than meat (i.e. "brown rice, white rice" etc.). So many of the dog foods that you will rave about having meat as their first ingredient are in fact still lying to the consumer because in fact their dog food contains more rice than anything. (Check any food that says anything like "Chicken & Rice" or "Lamb & Rice" and you'll see what I mean.) So just because meat is at the top of the ingredients list does not mean that is what is mostly in your dog food.

Secondly, corn in your dog food is not all bad. A lot of people are scared that corn in their dog food will lead to food allergies, and if their dog begins itching coincidentally as they switch dog foods they believe it is the corn in the food. However, how many of these people actually took their dog to get an allergy test? Probably not very many of them due to the high cost of the test and the fact that rumors stating that corn is bad for their dog make them believe that this is the cause of their dog's allergy. The funny thing is that if you go and get your dog checked for corn allergies, it is likely that your dog is allergic to corn! Less than 2% of dogs with food allergies are actually allergic to corn!!! The most common food allergies in dogs are caused by BEEF (one of the key ingredients that you all are searching for) and WHEAT, not corn. And for those who argue that corn is not digestable, think again. It depends on how the corn is processed. Cooked, dried, and ground corn is 95% digestable.

And another thing, for all you high protein seekers: the only dogs who will need a high-protein diet are puppies and working dogs who metabolize quickly enough to use the high protein in their dog food. Once your dog hits maturity at around a year, they will need to be switched to a lower protein adult dog food because over time, the high protein diets that many people seek out will lead to kidney failure, which is why prescription Science Diet K/D formula is one of the best selling dog foods on the market today. Too many people thinking that a high protein diet will be good for their dog, when in fact they are causing kidney failure in the dogs that they "care so much about." Dogs get their energy from protein, carbohydrates, and fat. However, in order to get energy the healthiest way, these three must be pretty close to equal. Otherwise you get too much of one and not enough of the others which is in turn unhealthy for your dog.

Another thing to look for on your dog food labels is under the guaranteed analysis (required by AAFCO) is the guarantee that the dog food manufacturer must put on the label. Science Diet is one of the only dog foods (Evo has this as well) to have "animal tests have proven" on their guarantee. Most others will have "is formulated to" on their guarantee meaning that they have not done research as to the effects their food has on dogs before putting it out on the market. And many of your beloved dog foods will have that their food is "formulated" for "all life stages." Meaning that in fact the food is essentially a puppy food and will have a high protein, high fat content suitable for feeding puppies. But as I mentioned before, this high protein diet is not suitable for mature dogs. One of the leading brands that has this on their label is Nutro. So all of you who swear by Nutro as being better than Royal Canin, read your labels. If you have been feeding this to your dogs, you've been giving them puppy food without realizing it. AAFCO's standards require that any dog food with protein and fat content that is suitable for feeding puppies be labeled as and "all life stages" food. So consumers beware!

Lots of dog food manufacturers will try to trick consumers into thinking their food is the best out there, which is why consumers need to do their research before making assumptions.

I've been feeding Royal Canin to my dogs and they're doing great on it!
