I've been using this for a few weeks now and it is working better than I thought. I was using a small, cheap filter before purchasing this one, and so I have both of them working in the same tank. The canister filter alone left the water a little cloudy, but the combination of the two makes the water look pristine.

This filter works great. It's a good choice if you are becoming experienced with aquariums. Make sure you're OK with the price of the cartridges though. Also, this filter is pretty loud. I wouldn't recommend it if your aquarium is set up in your bedroom.

I own three of these and especially love the micron filter capability. The filters are very easy to clean and exceptionally well built. I use two of these on a 55 gallon live bearing baby tank and usually get a good month of high flow rates, alternating between cleaning one or the other every two weeks when using the carbon system. The flow rate goes down somewhat with the micron filter, but the water is left sparkling... A great trade off...

Although this model may be good in terms of dependability and cleaning efficiency, it is not quiet nor is it user-friendly in terms of maintenance. The old Whisper it was supposed to replace is better on both fronts. The pump on the AquaClear 70 could be quieter, and the water falls almost a couple of inches in the air before hitting the water-- and yes, the tank is full to half-inch from the top. I guess it was designed this way to promote aeration of the water, but it is noisy.

My wife and I purchased this filtration system from PetSmart and were very pleased by how easy it was to setup and get running. For a while, the filter worked without a hitch. We replaced the carbon, bio, and sponge in cycles and even cleaned out the tubes, motor and reservoir too. Then the problems began only after a few months.

Our problem with this is that because the sponge, is placed at the bottom of the filter basket, it seems to always want to float upwards. When it floats upwards, it tends to knock the lid off and in one extreme case, it floated almost completely out of the filtration system and started dumping gallons of water all over the place. You can only imagine what it feels like to come home one afternoon from work to find this has occurred.

I think if this flaw in design can be corrected and made the suction tube a bit more easier to clean, this would be a superb product.

This is the best filter I have own in 39 years of aquarium "hobbying".

The fresh water setup is a 110 gallons with 2 breeding pairs of HUGE angels (6 , 7 inches BIG) had 2 emperors 400 (which weren't enough) The water became CRISTAL clear in a matter of days (around 3), did add a package of the bio media to supplement the one that comes in the packg. and the filters (sponges) are rinsed in RO water every 2 weeks. (except the bio media)
Setup was a breeze...read the instructions... for cleaning quick release latch is excellent, no priming after the first time!!!
Overall is a 10 on my list...

I'm using this filter in a 35 gallon show-tank with a fairly large turtle, and it is hands down the best over-the-side style filter that I have come across. My old filter Tetra Whisper EX45 Filtration System wasn't cutting it so I replaced it with this one.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

For starters, the Marineland filter is much larger and the filters cartridges are much larger as well. The uptake tube is roughly twice as large and comes with an extension that allows it to draw water from near the bottom of my tank, where all the gunk is at. The previous Tetra filter could only get about half-way down.

The next improvement is the addition of a media tray which lets me put in more activated carbon or zeolite, or whatever depending on my needs. From my experience, this means that I don't need to change filters as frequently and I can have custom filtration right out of the box. With the Tetra filter, you can put in a biobag Whisper Bio-Bag Cartridge - Large - 12 pk. - Unassembled but I find the Marineland system more robust.

From more quantitative testing, I've found that the ammonia levels have stayed consistently low with this filter. With my old filter, ammonia levels were all over the place and it felt like I was declaring chemical war.

This unit is also pretty quiet and it hasn't had an impeller problems. I do find though, that you really need to prime it (fill it with water) before turning it on, otherwise you'll hear grinding sounds and it will take a long time for the water to start flowing, if at all.

At the price point, I don't think there's a better widely available filter than this.

This is a well-regarded filter (as well as the 400 model) and as a new user I can see why - construction is not cheesy and it's powerful - in my case too much so, at one end of a rectangular 55-gallon tank the outflow blows across the tank, and as it hits the glass causes a downward current that my mixed group of danios, pearl gouramis, platies, and especially the neons seem to dislike. Poor little neons wouldn't even venture to that side of the tank, the others are unfazed but don't seem to care for it. Ridiculously there is no flow adjustment so I have to see if I can deliberately clog the intake to slow it down. Can't believe this is for up to a 50 gallon tank - can't imagine this in a 20-gallon. Would recommend, but only for fish big and strong enough (or from fast-flow habitats) like danios. Don't think bettas or specialty goldfish would care for it either. Definitely a strong pump though.

Very dependable, well constructed, great filtration system. Highly recommended. Easy to clean, efficient, powerful. Have owned 2 of these, cracked one (no fault of the equipment).

FYI: Don't waste your money on the less expensive generic replacement cartridges; the quantity of carbon is minimal, filter pad leaves a LOT to be desired. Construct your own with uncut filtration pad and your choice of media in a bag. Saves a lot of $, pads are reusable and can be cleaned as often as needed.

bought this for my 56 gallon bowfront, works pretty good, cleared the water up real nice and definately sucks a lot of water, can actually see it pulling the water in. Was worried about it priming based on other reviews but i have seen no such problem thus far. Only 4 stars because it is a little loud, we sit 20 feet away from it when we watch tv and i can hear it, not enough to ruin things but when you walk over to it the sound is definately there. Would recommend as long as it isnt going in your bedroom.
