Opera

Who doesn't recognize the theme from Carmen or hasn't heard of Puccini's Madama Butterfly? But despite their visibility in the mass consciousness, those who have actually attended an opera performance should consider themselves lucky. Here, you can rate the operas you've seen live (or watched on DVD).

A great piece that should be in every opera company's repertoire.

The overture to this opera does get stuck in my head from time to time.

Beautiful opera and tons of pagentry; my only complaint is that the "Celeste Aida" aria gets a little annoying when it's stuck in your head.

The "non piu adrai" duet between Figaro and Cherubino is on one of my playlists.  I can never stop listening to it sometimes.  The opera plays kinda like a chick flick; it's funny, romantic, and sexy all at once.

I bought a DVD production of this from a performance at the Covent Garden (a.k.a the Royal Opera House in London).  It was pretty good but they decided to set it in 19th century Spain rather than Medieval Spain where it was originally supposed to take place.  I give it 4.5 stars.

The "vesti la giubba" aria is priceless.  I was fortunate enough to see famed tenor Jose Cura playing the part of the clown Canio here at the San Diego Opera.

The production I saw decided to take place in WWI Europe instead of 18th cen. Europe.  It was pretty awesome nonetheless.  It was my first opera that I saw (I was 17).

Favorite point in the opera is the "No, no Turiddu" duet between Turiddu and his pregnant girlfriend, Santuzza.

I always enjoyed La boheme. It's got a good plot, if a couple of songs are a little lacking, but overall it's very enjoyable and it's a really good entry into opera.

Lengthy but extraordinarily well conceived, of interest for those who look for expressive arias with lean instrumental accompaniments in opera, for drama with intrigue (Caesar in Egypt) and complex personal conflict, clear character development and rewarding musical moments for the female (soprano and contralto) and male (a counter tenor or a contralto) voices.
