I bought my new 870 super mag in April 2007 in order to shoot the 3.5" shell. I had problems with the spent shell hull ejecting. Took it to my local gunsmith which was probably a mistake and they said that I needed to clean it, use a bore brush, and don't buy cheap shells. Got it back from them, shot different shells, and it had no failures. I always wondered what they actually did. Did not get to go hunting in 2008. This year,2009, I shot several 2.75" cheap rounds at dove and no failures. I did not clean the gun and went duck hunting using 3" Reminton Nitro Steel and the spent shell hull would not eject. I only got to shoot once which was very disappointing. The problem went away at noon when the weather warmed up though. I have an older Reminton 870 Express which I also use and shot just as many shells at the same dove hunting trip. It has not been clean since and I know that it will shoot the same shells flawlessly as I have used it for about the past 20 years. I know there is a manufacturing defect.
11-30-09:Latest update. Called Remington and told them my problem and gave them the S/N#. They will send me a new barrel, but it will take about 30 days for the 28 inch. Wow, I 'am impressed with this service. Hopefully this will take care of my problem. I will let everyone know the outcome.

I have bought a new 1187 back in early 2001 In Every duck hunting trip it failed, It cannot handle the fast steels of today's duck loads. I either had the ejecter pop out or the receiver and barrel slam together so hard it takes two people with all their might to take it apart. as far as trap shooting I can shoot all day no problem. But with thee 1187 you better like stripping and cleaning your gun alot, their very touchy. The biggest problem is I never had any help when I had sent this gun it for warrentty. they say everything is good and to bad for you.

While The 870 is not the top of the line when it comes to shotguns, it is my FIRM belief that this firearm is the most reliable, dependable and versital shotgun ever manufactured. I own a variaty of shotguns for many different applications. I have 9 pump action guns, 6 of which are rem 870's. In my many years of experience, i have seen this gun go from the jungles of Vietnam, to law enforcement, to teaching youngsters about clays and wingshooting. so to a the ney sayers, i say get to know your firearm, it's applications and limitations.

I had an H&R 20 gauge when I was a 14 year old kid, and I got a few rabbits with it. I loved having it then. All my friends had 22's and so when we when hunting together once, they'd shoot at a rabbit first, and if they missed, I'd blast it with my 20 gauge. That was the plan. Then for a long time I was into archery and really had some lousy results and then I wanted to go gun hunting lately.
So recently after many decades since being 14 I got a Parder 20 gauge, which is pretty much the same thing. I really enjoy it alot. I've been to the range with it and doing pretty good and really enjoy shooting again and found that a homemade foam rubber/duck tape recoil pad pretty much eliminates a lot of the recoil.
I enjoy a single shot shotgun for its simplicity, and the Pardner I also enjoy for its low price. I find myself wondering what's the actual percent of the time you will get a second shot off anyway. Because its such a basic gun, it sort of gives my that old fashioned pioneer feeling like a muzzleloader, but it' a lot faster to load, plus a friend was telling me how his dad had a single shot shotgun and had learned to reload it very fast.
Some might not want to deal with the limitations of a single shot, but after doing archery, it seems as least way beyond archery in its range, accuracy and knockdown power at least for me anyway.

I have just purchase a replacement for the (old single Shot) with a New England 20 gauge Full choke pump shotgun. And was noticeing the recoil on this model NP1206. It has a little more kick then expected for a 20 gauge pump. So far no jaming in the chamber. Shell ejection seems good. But choke change out seem hard to unscew from barrel. Any suggestion why? I have inspected chokes, modified and full. These are remmington chokes.

I own a Franchi Renaissance Classic and had the same problem, the second barrel would not always fire after the first. I stumbled upon the fix which is: after loading the gun, firmly close the action. After doing this my gun fires both barrels 100% of the time. I had always been told, don't slam the action closed but I took it to the extreme and was closing the action too lightly. I had some 12 gauge snap caps and was testing out different things when I found the cure. You'll notice when you close the action firmly (not too hard) the top lever will have moved more towards the center of the gun. Not totally centered but more centered than if I closed the action softly. Also, if you do close the action too softly, a little push on the top lever will allow both barrels to fire. Good luck and hopefully you've found your cure since this reply is a year late.

Jammed when new, jammed when old. Every 2 boxes get 1 jam. Would be OK if 1/500, but 1/50 - come on. Shoot skeet using the low-load piston. Clean it well. Had it professionally cleaned by gun smith - still jammed. Shoot Win AA129 - quality shells and Remington Dove loads - also good shells. jams. Shoots better when not cleaned. Ports cleaned, mag tube wibed with a silicone cloth with no lube. Still jams. Put extra shell in magazine to increase spring pressure - still jams. Cleaned spring in the stock and the tube. etc., still jams. Love the look of the gun, love to shoot it. Hate the jams. Friend shoots a gold hunter with 2 3/4 shells for skeet, it jams. Took skeet class so now I hit 25's - I know how to hold the gun. I shoot 400-500 rounds each month in a skeet league. It jams.

Remington 1100s and Barettas shoot thousands of cheap rounds without a jam and with little cleaning. I've rented them all old dirty and tired and performed flawless (Silver Dollar, FL). Its the gun. Sent it to Browning - its their issue. If it jams when it gets back, I'll sell it to you. Some must be good, some not. Too many 'nots'. Don't appear to make them anymore vs the Silver Hunter. Hmmm. Beautiful gun and am proud to carry it, constant remarks on what a fine looker it is. For $1400 I also wish it did not jam.

If you don't shoot alot, it is a fine gun.

--update - received gun back from Browning jammed once on 100 rounds. They replaced the piston. After the jam, I removed barrel, and wiped outside of magazine tube and inside of piston with my shirt (completely dry). Been through 400 rounds with not another jam. Appears fixed (or I have a lucky shirt).
