Cadel shouldn't be missed as one of the world's greatest cyclists. He hasn't ridden with the strongest teams but still finished second twice in the Tour de France and won a world championship by dropping riders through attrition - the toughest way to win a world championship.

There are a lot of people who call Lance Armstrong a doper even though there is no empirical evidence proving that Lance Armstrong ever illegally used performance enhancing drugs. A lot of these allegations are based on a conversation that Lance Armstrong had with a doctor during his cancer treatment where he admitted taking some steroids. Steroids are often used to treat cancer patients and human growth hormone is used to help cancer patients after cancer is gone. Repeated testing has always exonerated Armstrong from accusations that he used performance enhancing drugs to further his cycling career. The United States is not a big cycling nation and yet it has produced two of the best cyclists of all time, Lance Armstrong and Greg LeMond.

The problem with these rating games is the undue bias shownin favor of the most recent competitors. Anyone who doesn't choose Eddie has little or no sense of history.

It's a shame that hardly anybody has heard of this gentleman.Through bigotry and being band from some competitions,he still became world champion.

by far the greatist.. hate to say it but the others may have been great at different types of races, but only race most of the world cares about is the TDF, which LA has won 7 consecutive times.

A taleneted yet troubled rider. He really does not have that much as results goes. However he was the last rider to complete the Giro/Tour double and one of only a handful to have 3 Major tour jerseys in one year. One can hardly consider him dominating the Giro with one total win by 1'33" (there were several stages where more than that changed between the top riders that year).

So dominated the Giro that one year he was actually paid the same amount as the winners prize to not participate (back in the days where prize money was the reason to race). 12 stage wins in the Giro in one year. Until Merckx one of the riders in the debate for best of all time.
