Invasion or rebellion by robots, androids, supercomputers, or other forms of AI has long been a favorite subject of the entertainment industry. However, some of this stuff is right around the corner, as evidenced by this article.

While it's a far cry from the days in which a single woman was the legal property of her father or brothers, singles still face extraordinary social and financial pressures in a society designed for couples. Singles regularly experience discrimination from their employers (longer hours, lower pay), their insurers (higher premiums), the government (higher taxes), and retailers (package deals that only apply to marital partners), as well as their own friends and family, who often exclude them, deride them, or needle them. After a certain age, singles are often the butt of remarks implying that they've failed in life or are somehow defective. They are truly the "invisible majority" in our country.

Americans have a love/hate relationship with sex. It's ubiquitous and ubiquitously repressed, reviled, shamed, and snickered about. Considering the aggressiveness with which some Americans have fought sex education, reproductive choices for women (and, no, I'm not just referring to abortions here but even simple contraception like the pill), and mere glimpses of nudity on TV, the war on sex seems to have displaced the war on drugs and the war on terror.

Lyme Disease is typically spread by tick bites.  It usually presents with a distinctive rash around the site of the bite and flulike symptoms, which can be alleviated with antibiotics.  Lyme can be difficult to treat, especially if not caught early on.  In later stages, complications can include arthritis, heart inflammation and palpitations, brain inflammation and nerve damage, insomnia, memory loss, and mood disorders.

Lung cancer remains the single most common cancer diagnosed in both sexes in the United States and has an extremely high mortality rate.  Only 14% of patients diagnosed with lung cancer survive beyond the five-year mark.  Treatment is difficult, and as the disease progresses, it becomes horribly painful.

Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the world and one of the most deadly. The five-year survival rate is very low (only about 9%), and death often comes quickly and painfully, within three to six months of the diagnosis, particularly if not discovered early on.  This disease took my grandma's life just three months after her diagnosis.

Rabies is usually transmitted by an animal bite and is, thus, not highly infectious.  However, those who are infected MUST have a series of painful vaccinations within 14 days of infection.  If the bite is unnoticed or untreated for other reasons, rabies is almost invariably fatal as its flulike symptoms progress to partial paralysis, anxiety, agitation, confusion, and delirium.  Researchers are currently investigating ways to treat unvaccinated rabies by inducing coma as the illness peaks and have had one success.

A staph infection that can become particularly virulent if it enters the body through a break in the skin.  Deterioration is rapid and culminates in toxic shock, pneumonia, and respiratory failure.  Even with treatment, the death rate is 34%.  Kids, athletes, and hospital staff are at particular risk

Typhoid fever is spread through infected food and water and is still common in the developing world, though it is fairly unheard of in the States due to increased vaccination, antibiotics, and cleanliness.  Typhoid causes a high fever, headache, stomach pain, malaise, and sometimes rash, and about 20% of those infected will die without treatment.
