I think The Twins really got the better of this deal. Hardy had a bad year last year, but shortstops with pop are becoming fairly rare again. He's still young enough to turn it around. Orlando Cabrera has had a good career, but he is aging, and The Twins are probably wise to get younger at that key position.

Gomez is a good fielder and he has speed, but at the plate he is really a throwback to fast late 70's/ 80's guys like Omar Moreno. Gomez is one of those players who hit for, at best, mediocre averages with virtually no power and who offer little offensively beyond speed.

This trade looks good from both sides. The Brewers were disappointed with Hardy this year and ended up sending him to the minors during the season. Playing in Minnesota should give him a fresh start and hopefully revitalize his career. If Hardy can adequately replace Orlando Cabrera, then this move should be good for them.

The Brewers picked up Gomez, who should be able to replace Mike Cameron. Gomez is a young guy, and he will save them a lot of money by not resigning Cameron. That extra money should help them improve their weak rotation. Gomez never really became the start that some people thought he would when he was part of the Johan Santana trade. However, he is still really young, and could develop into a pretty good player yet.

Kershaw was very impressive this season by finishing with the 5th best ERA in the NL. However, as one of the youngest players in baseball this season, the Dodgers were cautious with him and didn't allow him to throw a lot of pitches in many of his starts. That inability to last longer into games led to a mediocre 8-8 record. So despite being the best pitcher on a playoff team, I don't think Kershaw is ready for Cy Young consideration. However, the guy appears to be a stud and should be a Cy Young contender very soon.

I'd make his teammate Chris Carpenter the Cy Young winner, but Wainwright would be one of my runners up. He led the NL in innings pitched and wound up with the most wins with 19. Only two other pitchers had more than fifteen wins in the NL, which makes his win total impressive. Meanwhile he still managed to finish fourth in the NL in ERA and had the 10th best WHIP. Wainwright and Carpenter were a great pitching combo this season, and I'm surprised it didn't lead to better results in the postseason.

Chris Carpenter is easily the comeback player of the year in the NL after pitching just five games and winning none over the last two seasons. He will have more competition for the Cy Young award, but he would get my top vote. He led the NL in ERA at 2.24, and his 17-4 record led to the best winning percentage as well. One knock against Carpenter is that he didn't pitch 30 games and finished with less than 200 innings pitched. However, for a guy coming off of a major injury, I think he was pretty resiliant. When he was pitching, he was the best in the NL, and I think he put in enough time to earn the award.
