Crown Royal...used to be the perfect gift whiskey. Now with all the single malts and designer brands you don't dare to gift this unless you know the person well. This product has been marketed very well. Put it in a cool velvet-like bag with the gold drawstring (very high status marble bag) and place it in a classy looking box. And charge two to three times what it would be selling for in a regular bottle. Don't get me wrong this is smooth, tasty whiskey. But, so is MacNaughton's for one third the price. Yes, the Crown is a tiny bit sweeter, and has that great marketing thing going for it, but if just enjoying a good Canadian whiskey is your aim there are better values for sure. I'm not going to knock C.R. for savvy marketing and it sure doesn't deserve one or two star ratings ever. This is a good four star and would be four and a half if it weren't so expensive. I tried some on the rocks with a splash of water, followed by the same formula with Powers Gold (Irish) whisky. The Powers had a bit more character but the C.R. was sweeter and a bit smoother.

After reading so many positive opinions of this product I decided to give it a whirl. Not too big a gamble as it was about $11 for the 750ml bottle at our state owned liquor stores. I was very surprised at how smooth and flavorful this whiskey is. The flavor is simple vanilla with a touch of oak. Maybe a slight maple syrup sweetness in the finish. Value wise it is the best I've had and compares very well with whiskies ranging in price from $15 to $43 for the same size. Keep this review under your hat, if word gets out the increased demand would cause the price to go up! The relative sweetness would make it pair well with classic coke in a mixed drink. I enjoyed it on the rocks with a little splash of water. Very nice indeed.

If I was forced to drink bourbon right from the bottle this would be a top choice for that endeavor. Smooth and clean with no bad flavors it should be at least 86 proof for the price paid. Better yet at barrel-proof I could probably justify an occasional purchase. If smooth wins over character and price is not a consideration buy some now. You won't be disappointed.

As a value bourbon that has been well aged it is my favorite pour at this time. I usually drink my various whiskies on the rocks with just a splash of water. This bourbon has some real character and a touch of burn but finishes with a hint of vanilla sweetness and oak. Yes there is a bit more barrel char from the longer aging and slightly higher proof but I have no problem with that. If smoothness more than character is your choice stick with the Canadian whiskies. Where I shop there is very little price difference between JB white (4 yrs.), JB green (5 yrs.), and JB black (8 yrs.). For my money I buy the black as an everyday pour. The green label is a good choice also.
