See guys ! I dont want ot get into an argument here but i belive it is impossible to ascertain easily the term best special forces, because special forces are meant for special purposes and sometimes for specific terrains or also depends on whether they are used in reactive (Hostage rescue, anti hijack) or preemptive situations(Recon, Sabot and Raiding).

There are a variety of counterterrorist and Hostage rescue units that are more versed in combat in an urban combat CQB situation. The SAS, GIGN, GSG9 and American HRT are come of the SF units that are good at this.

In a desert environment, the Australian SAS and SASR would undoubtedly be one among the best since there is nothing like training in the Aus desert outback. Few environments can be as punishing. Thats why they do better in Iraq than most other units.

In the meiddle east few special forces have teh ability to blend in and engage in assymetric warfare like the israeli 'sayaret matkal'. The Iranian Quds force is also one of teh other best trained units although as per current international law they can be classified as Terrorists rather than as Counter terrorists, but theyve done some good shit. Rumor has it that the chechen terrorists at Beslan had trained with them.

In a mountainous terrain the little known SFF or Special frontier force of India is one of the best units in the world. The people are handpicked and trained from the local maountain tribes at the indo nepal border near the foothills of the himalayas. The Aus SAS might do well in the desert but i wouldnt know if they could accomplish the same in the thin mountain air. They are one of the worlds best kept secrets and were developed in an offensive capability in case of a chinese threat.

The Pakistani SSG is also a good special force unit except for the dubious distinction it has for training kashmir seperatists and terrorists against India. The attack in the Indian city of Mumbai by the terrorists they trained was a notable feat by itself. The terrorists ran amok in the city indiscriminately shooting civilians and lobbing grenades. They were holed up in the luxury Taj hotel for 3 days when the indian commando teams coudnt take them down. I would rate the SSG along with the Quds force with the exception that they continue to routinely train with teh best units like SAS, SEAL's etc.

Similarly i am sure most of the worlds special forces would be adequately trained to handle situations in their own spheres of influence.

I think Longstreet would have made short work of a Union counter-stroke against Seminary Ridge.

If Meade failed it was in not striking at the ANV when it was trapped against the flooding Potomac a few days after the battle.

Absolutely one of the great retreats in military history. By 1944 Hitler's policy of holding territory above economy of forces resulted in most German units on the Southern Front being totally burned out. When the Russians broke through on both sides of the 1st Panzer Army, they had a massive preponderance in infantry and tanks.

Initially Hube wanted to drive due south-west, since only light Soviet forces were present in that direction. However, he followed his superior Eric Von Manstein, Commander in Chief Army Group South's orders to break out to the west. This, in spite of serious misgivings over the massive Soviet armored forces and supporting infantry in that direction.

Hube did a superb job of keeping his forces moving, and changing fronts. At the same time, Eric Von Manstein, fought battles with both Hitler and the Russians to free up the forces necessary to drive a corridor through to Hube.

Both men were successful. Hube drove due west and linked up with reinforcements gathered by Manstein and wrested from Hitler. The resulting breakout disrupted the supply lines on the Soviet armored forces and brought them to a halt, for the time-being.

Unfortunately, as a result of the confrontations necessary to get Hitler's approval, Manstein was subsequently removed from his position. The German Army on the Eastern Front never recovered from the loss of his military genius.

Very tough and effective aircraft. However, the design is getting very old and in need of upgrades.

So far the performance testing have been a bit troublesome. Not a true "stealth" fighter having some frontal stealth capabilities but if caught in a turn or from behind the stealth aspect greatly diminishes. It lacks some of the capabilities of the wonderful Typhoon fighter as well as the Grippen, Rafale and modern Russian fighters. And as it is made by L.M. the price has ballooned over the quoted initial pre-production price. This is not a cheap aircraft. In my humble opinion the USA has taken a huge step in the wrong direction with this aircraft. We need an air superiority fighter which we appear to have in the super expensive F22. We need a moderate yet capable fighter which we have in the F16. What we don't have is a dedicated attack plane built in large numbers. To my mind the Air Force needs only four main offensive type aircraft. (Transport and specialty aircraft are in a separate bracket) These would be the F22, upgraded F16, A10 and a modernized version of the old A7. I have seen the A7 in action and was very impressed. It has defensive options with chaff and flares. A limited short range air to air capability with fuselage mounted sidewinders. (We used them to chase Russian Bear bombers when our fighters were committed elsewhere.) It carried a wonderful 20mm cannon and a payload of up to 12,000 pounds of bombs/weapons. These aircraft are cheap to build and the radar and engines could be easily upgraded. What we lack on the modern battlefield is large numbers of cheap, effective attack aircraft to provide massive air support for our troops. Instead we are trying to make do with a few helo's and expensive duel role fighter aircraft which cannot be deployed in large enough numbers to be truly effective.... This is one of the reasons we are still in Afghanistan. (8 years now) We have not enough men and aircraft to cover the country and provide the firepower needed to win. Until the military get's away from the idea that a few super expensive planes are the wave of the future we won't be winning any wars anytime soon.
