I've been on this show a few dozen times, almost always as an extra although I did have two small speaking roles, called Under 5's in the soap world (under 5 lines). The first time I was cast as an extra cop but the stage manager bumped me and got me pretty involved in the scene, it was a tense hostage negotiation scene and I helped get the hostages out. A year or so later the casting associate called me and offered me a small role as a reporter, where I asked the mayor what he could tell us about the status of the necktie killer. That time I got a dressing room and went to hair and makeup, so I got the whole experience. Extras sit upstairs in a waiting room, which is fine, but having the dressing room and doing hair and makeup is what it's all about in my opinion. Getting the bigger paycheck helps too, but the U-5's don't pay all that much; about $500. I've told Chalky this many times but I'd love to be on this show more on the regular. I went in to audition for a recurring role recently but didn't get it.

This was a decent film. Critically acclaimed but did poorly in theaters, possibly because Fassbender isn't as big a name as Christian Bale or Leonardo Dicaprio, who were previously tied to the project. Written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Danny Boyle, with Kate Winslett as the female lead, lots of talented folks were a part of this, and they filmed many scenes on-location (the SF Opera house and De Anza College, where some big product launches took place, for example). It also may have done poorly because it focused on only a small part of Steve Jobs life and career. Or, it may be that the Ashton Kutcher film "Jobs" came out just a few years before. Nonetheless, it's worth a watch. If you do check it out, you might see me about halfway through. I was a small step above an extra because I had a skill (waiter/caterer), and I was in the middle of a scene for a couple seconds when the reporter was running after Steve Jobs.

I'm on a 1988 roll this afternoon so I'll continue with Bloodsport. This was in large part the reason I got into martial arts. Jean Claude Van Damme's character, which was based on the life story of Mr. Dux, travelled to Hong Kong to battle a gauntlet of fighters in honor of his dying sensei. I've gotten to known Frank pretty well over the past several years, and there has been a lot of controversy about him and his claims since the movie was released. I'm not certain what went down of course as the Kumite was said to be a secret event that happened over 40 years ago. I will say a few things however, and these I know as fact. Mr. Dux is a badass. Looked up some of his videos, particularly punching and kicking through bullet proof glass. He also has trained police and military forces throughout the world, I've seen pictures of this. He also has owned about a dozen Ninjitsu schools that teach his method, and has owned them since the mid-80's. Lastly, he's a gem of a guy. Not only what he does for his friends, but for fans who have reached out to him over the years. I know two personally who has cerebral palsy, and he spent a week with each of them for free, getting no publicity, and I was the only one who knew about this other than those two men who he helped. I'll end with this, Frank has truly lived a James Bond-type life. It's a chicken or the egg type thing - did it happen before or as a result of Bloodsport.
