A brutal pill for me to swallow because I'm a Phillie fan. . .

It ranks high for sports stories because it's a natural fave of the East-Coast media machine. . .and I must give credit because the Yankees simply played better - but what hurts is that the Phillies didn't play their best baseball and still took two wins from this team.

well, Cliff Lee took two wins. . .

Anyways, it's a four-star story that will hold steam as the year comes to a close. . .

In a world of rock stars, sultans, kings, presidents, and Hollywood royalty - perhaps the ego of Spurrier is truly remarkable. No one who has ever spent time with him can possibly fit their heads in the same room with his. . .

Still. . .

Despite a laughable attempt in the NFL (which I gleefully predicted would be a disaster) Spurrier has won at every college he's coached at. He wins. He recruits. He makes the opposition focus on him instead of his team. He's a prick and he's a winner. Former players love and hate the guy. Say what you will, but Steve-O is one hell of a college football coach.

Classic mind over heart rating here. . .

Spectacular recruiter. . .deserves credit for putting FSU (redneck school) on the map. . .

. . .but Bowden is as dirty as the day is long. . .and his redneck-esque personal plus his more-than-once-in-trouble-program rubs me the wrong way. Anyone can win dirty - great coaches win within certain rules.

And it's obvious he's obsessed with having the all-time record for wins - and it's holding back the development of the team. He's broken a coaching rule he preaches - don't put yourself above the team. How can his players take that mantra seriously from this man?

Class act. . .good guy. . .cleaner-than-average program, but Joe Pa is a little old. Penn State needs some new blood. This in no way diminishes the legacy of one of the greatest coaches ever.

(Rare update). . .I simply have to push this to a 4 because of the old bird's win total. . .I mean there's no way I can rank a guy with more wins than rice in China lower than a 4, right? But I still think the old man should go gently into that good night. . .

Managed to win some games at Stanford and then turn around Notre Dame before the powers that be strangely decided that it was time for him to go.

True, his Washington stint didn't pay dividends. . .but he's had success in two of his three stops. Plus his players generally graduate. . .anyone ranking him lower than three has to have something personal against the man. . .

Recruiting ability should keep him out of the basement in this category. . .but Weis the coach has cost ND two games this season (the Michigan game was a real back-breaker) and it seems that karma has caught up to ND for two blunders-

1. Firing Willingham unceremoniously and callously even though he had the program moving in the right direction and

2. Giving Weis a completely undeserved contract extension after he was at ND for about. . .six weeks?

Weis is out of excuses. . .he's been there long enough, and his head-scratching coaching moves are starting to hold the Irish back.
