I was once over drawn for less than 1 dollar and they charged 44 $ insufficient funds fee. Again once I transfered money from my saving account to checking account using ATM and then used my card - since my atm transfer was after 3 pm, they made this transfer avaialable the next day and charged more than 100$. (note that my account seemed fine at the ATM - but they told me that their system was not working that way)

I opened this acount at the beginning of 2009. Since that time I have had over $265 in fees for transactions under $30. I had alot of problems with citizens in October, when they had a glitch in the system that double withdrew a bill twice. The bill they withdrew just happened to be my car payment for $460. They did eventually refund the 2nd withdrawl, and also the bounced fee, but in the mean time it had made a few other transactions bounce also. My wife contacted the 800 number for customer service, and the lady argued with my wife that all the transactions associated with their mistake had been credited. I finally had to print a copy of my statement and take into my local branch and argue with them. They admitted the fault and credited the money back to my account. This week i had to make 2 visits to citizens. I received a notice in the mail that 4 transactions had bounced. When I checked my account it only showed 2 had bounced, but they charged me for 4 bounced transactions. I went into the bank and they informed me that there must have been a hold on some funds, from previous transactions and that the hold had come off after the money had been deposited to cover the transactions, so only the 2 where showing up but that 4 had bounced. SHe said the computer automatically hits the account with a fee even if the item hasn't cleared. Well the next day, I checked my account and again it was overdrawn, but none of the transactions had cleared. So I deposited some money, but they had already hit me with a $156 bounced fee, and after everything cleared, nothing on my statement showed any transaction in the negative. I argued with the lady that the money had been deposited and hadn't cleared the account ,so why am I getting hit with bounced fee. SHe tried to explain it away, and said that she coouldn't credit my account, it had to go to the regional manager to review. WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT. I have 3 accounts plus a business account, that I am highly considering leaving.

Horrible overdraft fee policy. I had $160 in my account yesterday. I used my debit card twice, once to withdraw $20, once at the grocery store for $76. Last night I check I wrote over the weekend, which I thought wouldn't clear until tonight (I have money to deposit to cover it today) cleared. I realize the check clearing early is entirely my fault, and will take my penalty of $39.00. My issue is, the bank also charges me an overdraft on the two debit transactions yesterday. On-line, debits show up immediately, so when I went to bed last night, the two debits were out, the check was not. When I get up this morning, the check is out BEFORE the two debits. Again, I know it's my fault I was overdrawn, I screwed up and I should pay the fee. But instead of $39, I now owe $117. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like BS to me.

I began writing my debauchery with Citizens a half hour ago and realized that it was WAY too long to have ANYONE read. So I will try to summarize it the best way I can, and summarizing it doesn't even come close...Let me just say that I had my purse stolen and from that point forward Citizens could neither sympathize or relate to me in any way. I was charged overdraft fees for purchases that I was NOT notified of. I had service fees on my acct that I WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF, and upon opening up a new checking acct I was told that THIS TIME, I was going to be charged for it. I was hung up on ONCE and believe me, I am not aggressive over the phone. I am not one to be hung up on. When I went to the branch, the teller and the manager both tried solicit me to speak with Human Resources at my place of employment to TRY to get an ATM placed. Here I come with numerous complaints about my acct and instead of sympathizing they attempt to further their business with me. It was extremely unprofessional. And to add to this, not too long ago I was looking at my acct and noticed a service charge of 25.00 made to my acct. I called and asked what it was and they told me it was a 'service charge for my line of credit'. This 'line of credit' they spoke of was 1500 dollars credit if I should ever need money and don't have it in my acct. Well, I CANCELLED THAT FASTER THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE. I told the teller that I would like overdraft protection instead. She put it all in place for me and then at the end of the phone call i asked her, "So there will be no more hidden fees made to my acct is that right?" She said, "Well if you overdraft and we take from your savings, then you will be charged 15.00." I WAS OUTRAGED! HOW DO YOU HAVE OVERDRAFT PROTECTION (AND CALL IT PROTECTION) WHEN THEY CHARGE YOU 15.00 TO PULL FROM YOUR SAVINGS!!??? I'm so appalled that they are able to get away with this...It's very ironic considering I signed up with them because they supposedly had a #1 Customer Satisfaction rate....where did they get those numbers from?! It has been almost 3 months and I am still trying to get my funds in order. Once I do...I'm pulling my money RIGHT out of Citizens. You can count on that.

I am a current employee and have been for over the last four years of citizensbank. What i do is customer service, basically whenever you call in for any type of assistance i am the person that answers the phone. one thing i do agree with is unfortunately you have to be very diligent with your checkbook or have a lot of money to avoid fees. i have od once in four years and no, employees do not receive rebates. With that said i have to agree with the majority. Citizens is the most immoral business i have ever dealt with. Please dont be angry with customer service as we are not even allowed to rebate accounts because the bank is going broke. so we have to pass rebate request over to our managers. Did anyone ever wonder why this is like the only bank to not list items on hold so you can view them online? its because they dont want you to know whats on hold, hoping you forget so you can overdraft your account. I've talked to thousands of customers saying the same things in these articles. i feel so bad because this company has no sympathy. they also rearrange purchase so the largest item comes out first so you can od your account eg: you make 5 purchase lets say $10 $7 $20 $15 $100. lets say you have a balance $105 what they do is put in the big one $100 pay that. you now have $5 left and will charge you 39x4 which is $156 on the last four. instead of putting the four and only charging the $39 for 1 od. then you call us and we are trained to say oh we put the bigger items in first cause we try to pay the larger items. it may be a utility bill, rent etc. Bull crap! if you dont write down your purchases dont use credit. why you think we come out with little programs designed for you to use credit like debit rewards. its all a scam to get you to overdraft. credit is held from your balance for 48biz hours then put back in your account balance, then taken back out. i can go on and on and on. EMPLOYEE FOR FOUR YEARS AND COUNTING. Believe me this bank does not practice ETHICS or MORALE. We as employees complain about this all the time but of course it falls on deaf ears.

horrible. highest overdraft fees of any bankhighest atm fees of any bank.why anybody banks there is beyond me. loyalty should not be the only reason. i've paid over $700 this year in overdraft fees. they have the highest of any bank i've looked at [$39.00 an item]. never mentionted that the customer can alter the overdraft values so that if you don't have money in the account, the charge will be declined. in my opinion, and the opinion of several in congress now moving forward with a bill to protect consumers against this, it is giving you a loan that you do not authorize. robbery. i'm an idiot for not leaving them sooner, and i know that this may seem like problems found at any bank, but their customer serviceis awful! not once was i given any mercy, as they cannot under any circumstances refund fees.

I wish I could give the bank -starts, but I can't.I have been with the bank for over 8 years.Everything was going really well. I had no problemsBut about one week ago i went over to my bank (Citizens)To put in my work cheque, I see that I'm $80 under what I should have.So I go up to the teller and ask her. She spent 45 Minuets looking at the computer.I not knowing what is going on. She tells me she cant find anything.I look at her and say "What? How can $80 just disappear?"So by this time there were two other tellers looking at the same computer.None of them can find anything. Until...... Someone said Look he has been Overdraft $1.22. And the $80 is a fee. WHAT! So she printed me out a sheet and I looked at it.None of this made any cents, So for me being under $1.22 they take out $80.00???So then I asked what did I buy to make me go under they said they did not know. What I find to be odd is I have well over $1,000 in the bank How can I be under $1.22but Still have almost $1,000 in the bank. No one can tell me.Later on I called the Citizens Info Line to see if i can have more information on the $80 Fee.And if they can remove it. They say they could not remove it. I asked why? all they said was I was under $1.22 at one point so they took a fee of $80. I told them i have had this bank for 8 years and this has never happened to me. And that I had more then one account with them. They said the Fee is final. Please keep in mind that they never told me that I or some one got that made my account under $1.22 and took an $80 Fee. No answers to questions and they lady on the phone seemed a bit rude. Today I'm going and closing all of my accounts with Citizen bank.DON'T TRUST THEM!!!!!!!!!

If I could choose 0 Stars I would. This is the worst bank I have ever dealt with. All I can say, is stay as far away from this bank as possible! They ripped me off over $300 in excessive fees and flat out purposedly took long to clear deposited money. The worst customer service you can imagine. They are basically pointless and will NOT help anyone. If you like losing your hard earned money, then open an account with them. I learned the hard way, hopefully you'll read this and won't make the same mistake. They don't care about you one bit and will rip you off.

I certainly would not give Citizens Bank five stars, but I have to say that it is really up to the account holder to make sure there is enough of an available balance to cover all payments, withdrawals. purchases, holds, etc. This time last year, I my account was negative on a regular basis. I never wrote anything down and did not keep a check register. I would play it close, hoping that a deposit would clear in time to cover checks and purchases I had made. Sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldn't. And you can bet the bank lined everything up so I would be charged the most they could in overdraft fees! Then I started to keep a meticulous check register. I wrote EVERYTHING down, and didn't make a payment/purchase without making sure I had enough in my account to cover it. Since then, no overdrafts! Not one! Yes, it is a pain in the butt to have to do things this way, but if you realize that the bank is going to try to make as much money off your overdraft situation as they can! Greedy? yes! Don't let them take advantage of you. Take control of your account! It can be done!

It's unfortunate that all of the negative reviews are from the same loser that obviously has a grudge against Citizens. I have been with this bank all my life and have had NO problems with them at all. I have had experiences with many banks, and this one seems to be the only one to get it right. Kudos to Citizens
starr6243 02/18/2009
Citizens charged me $100 in fees for a product that did not deliver the rates it advertised. The Hi Yield Money Market delivers the lowest rates of any MM product they offer and they charge $25/ month for it. Further, the product was discontinued a few months back and of course current holders were not notified. The staff seems really uninformed and indifferent. Though Citizens is the most convenient location for me, I will no longer be banking there.

I hate Citizens. I have been banking with them for years without any problems. Sunday I deposited 200$ into my savings account. Today I just happen to be on my account online and noticed there was no credit for 200$. When I called them up they tried to tell me I never deposited any money at all!!! Now I have to wait 5-7 days for them to just review it!!!

I am very surprized to hear all the negative comments about Citizens Bank.I have been banking with them for about 15 years now, without any problems.I have automatic paycheck deposits. Use their online bill payer. Use their debit card regularly.I have never had any fees at all with any of my accounts. When I take a check in to deposit, funds are available the next day for use. I don't understand everyone's problem.I am not a citizens bank employee either.

I hate Citizens Bank. I have had them for a little short of 1 year for an auto loan. They have called me at my work after gaining a secondary line number at my work when I called to make a payment one day. They were informed 3 times that they were not permitted to call my work and told that I never gave them my work number! I was told that they "accidentally" deleted the wrong number in their computer after being told twice which number it was in their computer and after them lying to me that they never had the number in the first place. The second time they called me at work, my manager picked up and they identified themselves as from the consumer counceling department of citizens bank! I am outraged. I am only 5 days past due and not sure why I am in the counceling department. It's not like I don't communicate with them. They were told when I would have them money. My husband is expecting a check from his job but it hasn't come yet. I advise anyone to stay away from this company. I am so angry I want them fined. I have reported them to the BBB and I am going to send a certified letter to them expressing my outrage so that in the future if they call again I will have them fined and will take this matter up with my attorney!

I work for this crappy place, I try not to recommend anyone open an account. I have never work for another place that cares less about its customers then Citizens. And if you think that they screw over the customers, try being an employee. I was supposed to get paid the day before Christmas, but because of a problem with their computer, it was never posted to my account as well as many other employees. We all sustained fees because of the overdrafts and two people were fired. They refused to refund any money because it was our fault!!! Please understand the bankers and tellers would love to refund fees, but are told we could lose our jobs. Citizens only cares about money!! NEVER EVEN THINK ABOUT OPENING AN ACCOUNT WITH CITIZENS.
ANTICITIZENSBA NK 01/11/2009
completely disappointed with the fees charged by this bank. went abroad and was not alerted to the fees my account would suffer. in the past 5 months, i have lost >$75, including fees they charge when their bank is not used for ATM uses. Additionally, an online purchase for a plane ticket will cost me another $15 because company is located where they will need to charge an exchange fee, ridiculous. DO NOT OPEN A CITIZENS ACCOUNT customer service is ruuude, rude, rude!

ZERO STARS! Citizens bank sucks sooooo much!!! Okay, they did not post all of my transactions on time. One day it said I had $100.00 and then the next day it said I had $300.00. How is that even possible? So, I of course thought it was $300.00 and then the next day they said I overdrew. I rushed to put more money into my account and I put the money before they posted the fees. They are charging me $200.00 in overdraft fees. That is ridiculous! They are only money hungry and they want to take everyone's money. I'm switching banks right away because that was just ridiculous. I'm not impressed at all.
jpleahy 12/29/2008
I would give them a zero star if i could. I deposited $10,000 from my mother's trust, it cleared the next day. But the bank will not allow me to access it for no apparent reason. It's completely legit. But they won;t release it until they can find the Merrill Lynch rep. that issued the check. Completly arbitrary, with no just cause, I have a clean record.
palgan 12/22/2008
Zero star...They just charged me over $400.00 on over draft fee. I found out that every incident they charge $36.00 (one of the item was a coffee...they charged me $36.00...lol) I'll never use Citizens Bank again.
tke640 12/13/2008
When trying to pay my Citizens credit card from my Citizens checking account through the online payment method, it took three more days than the originally scheduled date. So...It to Citizens three days to pay itself! Then they charged me a late fee. The customer service representative said that they aren't really the same company and that the credit card division was bought from some other company. Great explination..."We're charging you a late fee because we can't integrate an acquired business." On top of the constant fees and poor customer service, they can't wire money to themselves. I'm switching to the local credit union.
joelisa88 12/10/2008
Begrudgingly giving 1 star but should be ZERO
What this bank is doing is illegal.
I QUOTE from the
Federal Register
"Assessing an overdraft fee when the overdraft would not have occurred but for a hold placed on funds in the consumer’s account that is in excess of the actual purchase or transaction amount appears to be an unfair act or practice under 15 U.S.C. 45(n) and the standards articulated by the FTC"
(b) Debit Holds
1. General. Under § 227.32(b), a bank may not assess an overdraft fee if the overdraft
would not have occurred but for a hold placed on funds in the consumer’s account
for a transaction that has been authorized but has not yet been presented for settlement,"
"Comment 32(b)–1 as proposed clarifies that the prohibition againstassessing an overdraft fee in connection with a debit hold applies only if theoverdraft is caused solely by the existence of the hold."
That is how they charge so many fees. I have had enough.
I also take offense to the few 5 star raters here who, based on there comments, feel they are above everyone else. GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE! We are not MORONS or ILLITERATE! We are, however, being robbed by Citizens Bank.
Our account have NEVER shown a negative balance and yet we have been charged overdraft fees!!!!!

I started with this bank when it was Charter One, and have continued with them since the change over. I am very satisfied with their performance and customer service and would recommend them to anyone. I have my checking and savings accounts there and have a joint account with my daughter there. I had two instances (over the last 3 years) that I was charged for insufficient funds. The first time it was the bank's fault, when I contacted them, they fixed it immediately and were very apologetic. The second time it was (hate to admit it) my fault - and it was do to a hold on funds coming in to my account via direct deposit. Even though it was my fault, I called their customer service dept., plead my case, and they reversed those charges too. I've had a couple of times where I've had to stop payment, or dispute an item and have always had courteous responses.
fzolee1 11/25/2008
I would give 0 star if I could. I have had my accounts open for over 5 years, last week I received a letter that they are closing all my accounts but two for no reason. They didn't mention any reason in the letter nor did they give any reason when I called them. They gave me 5 business days to find a new bank! CITIZENS BANK SUCKS BIG TIME! STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!
bubbasfarm 11/24/2008
Not your typical bank, indeed. Canceled the free debit card points system, thus resulting in all my points lost. I could have saved them, if I paid to be in the program or set up a recurring payment, neither of which I was interested in. Green Savings account is horrid. The interest rate fluctuates very often. When I noted this to the banker, she arrogantly said, "Well, it's *only* a Green Savings account." In other words, "You have the poor man's account. What do you expect?" When I said that I might close my accounts because of poor service, the banker shrugged me off and practically encouraged me to close. To my branch's credit, the tellers are mostly patient and friendly. Also, my debit card was quickly replaced after being lost.
gupta 11/21/2008
horrible bank, nobody knows how to do there job in the bank. If you want to talk to somebody above local bank manager, you hit the wall. They have no site for registring complaints.

Elders beware ... I am a 96 year old widow who has accounts with Citizens Bank, who is refusing to close my accounts. They accepted my notarized letter to change my address, but 3 months later when I sent a notarized letter to close my savings account, they have repeatedly refused, 1st saying my signature didn't match my old signature card then ending with requiring me to get a POA and have the POA send in the request. I am quite capable of handling my own affairs and this is truly adding insult to injury. I took the non-required step of having my signature notarized because of age related signature variation. I have placed calls to their 1-800-922-9999 too numbereous to detail with zero results. I have filed a complaint with the Comptroller of the currency, Administrator of National Banks and have sent a letter to James G. Connolly, President, Citizens Bank ... stay tuned for the results

I own a business and have many open accounts with this bank. I have banked with them since 2004 and I am very displeased. They hold your deposits even when they are cash or transfer(which should be available immediately on non-holidays, per their policies)--My accounts are in good standing and their is absolutely no reason for the money to be held. I have been monitoring my balances to be sure that I was not causing the error, when in fact I realized they were holding deposits, clearing debits first to create an overdraft and then releasing the deposit sometimes one or two days later. I have communicated this with their customer service department and went as far as management. Instead of acknowledging their mistake they blamed me. This is where I draw the line. I will be more than happy to admit when I make a mistake, and the bank will gladly make sure you are aware of it. But when it is their mistake(repeatedly), they become defensive and avoid rectifying the matter. For those of you posting and feeling the urge to protect this bank and further insulting those of us posting that are upset with this bank's poor customer service and mismanagement--I'd be inclined to think you work for this bank. If you don't work for this bank then you are just lucky they haven't slapped you with their poor tactics. To the rest of you having problems with them I empathize. It is frustrating to be nickel-and dimed by this giant. I am currently researching a replacement bank for my business and will soon end my relationship with Citizens. They are certainly not the only bank out there and I encourage those of you in the same boat as me to do the same. Maybe when they see enough people leaving them, upset and tired of their lame practices and poor accounting then maybe they'll get the point. If not, they will soon be the bank you hear about in the news having to close their doors due to losses. This bank deserves only 1 star for options they offer and minus 4 stars for their excessive overdraft fees and mismanagement of customers' money; along with a lack of good customer service, and a sluggish sometimes inaccurate website accounting. It's time you start thinking of your customers Citizens Bank. We're all catching on, get with the program or we'll all give you the boot. Your rating speaks loudly for all to hear!

I have had the same problems with over draft fees from this bank. And I feel I must take issue with the snide remarks made by those who questioned the intelligence of the people who incur these fees. People make mistakes - we are human. I highly doubt that any of these posters would claim they are perfect, but those of you who question our intelligence MUST be perfect. Anyway, the problem I had was when depositing paper checks. Unfortunately, I was on unemployment when I moved back to NY state. When I deposited my first check, the teller explained that since it was an in-state check, it would only require 48 hours to process and deposit. So I waited the 48 hours, paid the bills I had to pay and then was hit with a major over draft fee. I paid it thinking it was my mistake until it happened again. When I questioned why this kept happening as I had the money in my account, they said that it was because the government checks were being held for 7 - 10 business days. So the tellers either are not given the proper information or she didn't know what she was doing. And ever since that fiasco, I was unable to catch up and was forced to change banks. That was 2 years ago and I am STILL fighting them over this. I refuse to pay fees when I was given the wrong information to begin with. When it comes right from the mouth of an employee, you tend to believe them since THEY WORK THERE. If anyone can find the laws that regulate these fees, please let me know.

My account was drained thanks to a thief on paypal. Paypal approved the fraud claim and refunded the money, but the bank, claiming that no fraud occured did not rEturn any of the SIX NSF fees. CITIZENS BANK STEALS YOUR MONEY!!! DO NOT TRUST THEM FOR ANYTHING!!! I was with them for 3 years and nothing good ever came from them.

I had a great experience with Citizens for ONE year or so and then the floor fell out. They are rude, will not hesitate to make you the bad guy and slander you to the tellers and then tell you "maybe citizens bank isn't the bank for you" in a snide voice. Well thanks for the warning snide guy! I also would like to put together a class action suit for abusive practices, slander and bad business. Contact me if you would like to do this. They deserve to be sued and to go out of business.

Do I have to give them one star? I wish there was a negative rating. Terrible bank. I don't know what they are doing with these overdraft fee's, I don't know if it's even legal but if it is, it won't be when I get done with them. I'm contacting a lawyer and maybe get a suit against them. There is something wrong when all the complaints about this bank are overdraft, something just doesn't feel right
ABC1plus1is2 10/16/2008
The first observation I would like to make is that almost everyone with overdraft fees or issues rates this bank with a one star (or would prefer to give it a negative rating). Furthermore, the same complaints are laden with simple spelling and grammatical errors. This leads me to believe that these people who are giving the negative reviews might have a problem reading things, like the fees and features, disclosures, or the account agreements (most probably don't even read what they sign and agree to). Most of the fees described below are not even accurate according to the fees and features. All changes that occur in bank policy are clearly shown on the monthly statements, everyone would be aware of these changes if they opened their statements and simply read them. All banks have overdraft fees and other misc. fees (which in Citizen's case are clearly listed in their fees and features documentation which you can obtain at any branch and is also given at account opening. If the bankers read each page to customers then you would be there much longer than your attention spans would allow). I have banked at Citizens Bank for over 7 years and have not had a single problem or fee that was not expected. I can add and subtract and do so every time I make a purchase, withdrawal, or deposit. The second you agree to a charge the money must be in your account and assumed spent. It is illegal to make a purchase when you don't have the money in your account (that includes writing checks - this is called fraud). If you want to use money that you don't have you can use a credit card, but I'm confident that those of you that consistently overdraw your accounts don't have good enough credit to get one. I am also confident that many people who have had problems with Citizens Bank have also had problems at other banks. In time, after a few other banks, you will realize that Citizens Bank is the lesser of evils among banks. I have been a happy customer of Citizens bank for a long time and would greatly recommend them to anyone who has had any real problems with other banks. Their next business day availability on checks is a fabulous courtesy to all customers, especially businesses. The customer service is professional and extremely helpful. Remember the golden rule, if you are rude to the tellers and bankers do you really expect them to wow you with friendly service when you put them on guard from the first rant or curse you throw at them? If you approach them with an open mind you will find that you will certainly receive "not your typical" service. They have gone above and beyond for me and many of my friends and family. They stay open late and still help when they are ready to go home (some branches are open from 10 to 7 pm, I've seen bankers in the branches before and after hours often leading me to believe that they work 10-12 hours a day - banker's hours? Again, not your typical bank. I only wish there were more banks like Citizens bank around. I would also like to stress the deep community involvement and outreach that Citizens Bank exhibits, they certainly give more back to the community than most banks!

I am having a similar thing happen to me also. I checked my statement with my register. My math showed that I wiould still have a little over $1. (sad I know ) So can you believe my shock when I saw that I was -$122.?!?! Well you see what happened was I overdrafted by $5 at some point, which spurred them to charge me 78 dollars when my account was still positive, which brought it down to only having 1.88 and then the other charges when through so then they charged me another 39. I have no idea how they do their math, and Ive written an email to see if I get at least the first 78 dollars back. I am wlling to admit that maybe my math was a little off ( by 5 dollars ) so they can charge me the 39, but not the additional 78.

I hate citizens bank and I am closing my bank account Monday. They do not miss a week without taking money out for IFF even when there is money in the account. I am calling the better bussiness people or the Banking authority on them. They place things on hold and then for days and boom they come in at once. They already have the money but they will hit you with a fee if there is no money in the regular pot of money. It is way confusing.

Just another bank profiting off of your hard earned money due to foul play. I logged into my bank account to match it up with my check book ledger. Imagine my horror when it said negative $184 and my checkbook was still in the black. So I called them up immediately to see where this $184 in overdraft fees came from when nothing was overdrawn. And I quote "You can't trust your bank ledger, it will not show our holds or fees." EXCUSE ME?!?!? I balance my checkbook in vain?! I explained that yes, I saw the fees, however they did not apply since I did not overdraw my account. Apprently I didn't take the hold into consideration. The hold on my car insurance. The car insurance that is not scheduled to be taken out of my account until September 17th. Turns out, they sometimes put a hold on scheduled online bill pays. So if they know it's coming out of your account, they pull it out of the account 2 weeks in advance and hold it. Only it doesn't reflect in your ledger or on your online statement. I'm 24 and single. I live paycheck to paycheck. I did not have the money for my car insurance at the time. I will have it when the 17th rolls around though and I get paid again, or so I thought. Basically took $150 out of my account for this bill and "held it", my balance was just under a hundred dollars when they did this. So I went on spending until it got to about $10. I needed gas, food, and to pay another bill. All of those charges, were were numerous and small, counted as overdrafts because this hold put my account at a negative $60 as it was! So my bank account now shows all of these charges in the black, and then a insufficient fund fee in the realm of $300 which puts my available balance at -$184. What I don't get is since when it's legal to place these holds without alerting the bank account owner. And if this hold supposedly brought my account to a negative amount why did they continue to show my funds as available and allow me to continue spending this money? Their answers? It is common practice to places holds, I need to get with the times and should just assume this. And their banking systems aren't capable of showing the hold. They can just reflect the fee when it comes around. I am disgusted. I wish I could rate them negative like current balance is.

Indeed not even one star... Watch out!!! One penny overdraft may lead to over $400 in fees. I am with the others below wishing to take legal action; however, calling the news to publicly expose this scam may indeed be all that is right...

I rate Citizens a five and as I read down all of these comments I wonder what kind of education that most not all but most of these people have received. I have been with Citizens for the past 5 years and have never overdrawn my account, nor have I ever been charged fees. Do you want to know why? It is because I can very easily figure out simple math. It all boils down to if you don't have it don't spend it. Kiting doesn't work anymore. If you accept merchandise or a service and you pay via check or debit card the presumption is that you can afford it, if not it's called stealing. Last I checked my banker doesn't do my shopping for me. Its actually very simple keep track of your own balances, purchases, and outstanding checks the banks have no idea what you have done, only you do. As far as the person who claims their checks had stolen from their car, what kind of moran leaves checks in a car and how would the bank know your checks are stolen or if you just wrote bad checks and now wants to ditch who ever you wrote them to. And the ATM machines, I guess technology has advanced so much that ATM's now know your outstanding checks and purchases. Boy am I in the wrong line of work. And another thing what makes you think you should be able to take out all your money and close an account, knowing that you have outstanding items, again smells like a theif. I think for those that have trouble balancing an account which again is simple math, just cut up your cards close your checking and use a shoe box, or better yet STOP SHOPPING UNTIL YOU CAN ADD!!!!

Preditory. This bank has a fee fetish and is consumed with a "gotcha" mentallity designed to exploit customers. Customer Support reps lie at will and lie even more then they get caught.

This bank gets a "1" star. The minimum rating this website has. I'm sick of the crap. I'm sick of the inaccurate overdraft fees (I watch my account like a hawk!), I'm sick of the lies, the "service" charges. They didn't notify me in January when they changed their Overdraft Protection from a free service to a $15 charge. When I signed up for Overdraft Protection, I asked no less than THREE times whether or not it was a free service. The lady on the phone told me there were absolutely no charges for it. I can never trust my account balance, so I barely ever use my Debit card. DO NOT USE THIS BANK.

They always hire the shadiest employees, and revel in taking your money! My statement reads $564.00 insufficient funds fee -$156.00, now $408.00. WHAT THE HELL?!?! They're just pirates posing as a bank! How do you think they make a paycheck without all of those $40 IFF's!!! I had $500, how do you think I was in the negative? Well, if you go and talk to them, they'll insist you were in the negative, tell you sorry, no can do, and send you on your way. NEVER use this bank. Unless your itchin' to toss out some money.

I rank Citizens Bank a Minus 10 for just tons of stupidity lately. When i first started to use them they were great... But the last year has been missery! I think what gets me most is what SV says that if you check your balance on an ATM machine it may not reflect your actual balance. It may not show your actual balance either on the internet... Etc... But every time i check my balance on the ATM i *PAY& 2 dollars to do so. And i *PAY* that balance for what the machine calls a "Balance check" the "check your balance" option. Smells like fraud to me. Why am i paying $2 EVERY time to "check my balance" as it is so advertised when it is in point of fact a ummm "rough estimate." If they want to charge these fees, thats fine. But they need to give people their money's worth! I *PAYED* for a balance check. Not a rough estimation. The wording this 'service' was advertised under were 'check your balance.' NOT 'check your rough estimate.' Seems to me we need to file one of those group lawsuit things. Because THIS is FRAUD!

ihave a brain, I have money in my account and I do not spend more money than I have. However, that did not stop Citizen's Bank from charging me an insufficient funds fee for $156 when my account was in the positive. From there, the majority of my transactions went negative, incurring over $1000 in fees b/c they charge per negative transaction. With so many people having complaints about this bank, maybe they really aren't that great. Or do you think you are the smartest man alive, living amongst morons? Maybe you should teach a class on good banking practices.

Dear Ihaveabrain, We'll see how you feel in a year's time. The bank changes procedures and policies without notifying customers. The balance provided to you by the bank teller, the web site and the ATM are always different and get changed retroactively. When I once asked when a procedure about posting dates for deposits and withdrawls had been changed, the representative told me it hadn't been changed, but simply "improved." Meanwhile it ended up costing me hundreds of dollars, and lots of aggrevation. They refused to waive anything. Also, I don't request they "allow you to overdraft account constantly without fees." If the funds are not in the account they should not perform the transaction. Charging a $39 fee for a $4.00 overdarft at Starbucks is nothing short of Usary, which is immoral in every culture and faith.
