Some of you may have read my post from months ago, how SunTrust refused to change my parents CDs to joint ownership with me, despite my parents being terminally ill. And, despite the fact that 11 other banks in which my parents had money agreed to do this. Here's the latest-both of my parents have passed away. I had attempted to do a short form of probate-but it required me to list on the forms the CD numbers and current balances. I went toSunTrust to get this information. I had my parents death certificates, my ID (of course), and the Probate filing signed by the Court Clerk, but not yet filed. And, I was actually joint with my parents on a checking account there, which they had no problem letting me close two weeks earlier. So it wasn't like I was soemone walking in off of the street-they knew me. Keep in mind I did not want to actually do anything with the CDs-I just needed to list them on the probate form. Can you guess what happened?
That's right. Suntrust refused to give me the info. They told me, and I quote, "you will have to subpeona it".
It is amazing to me that this bank treats people this way. Every other bank that my parents have had money in has bent over backwards to help me settle the estate.
Don't bank at Suntrust. It's simply not worth it.

I have a tip for everyone, DON"T USE MONEY THAT IS NOT IN YOUR ACCOUNT. WHY? Because it's not yours and you should be charged. DON'T write post dated checks, it's all out of good faith. Balance your check register, this means write everything down and subtract it. Lastly, pay your loans, that's why the economy is in the shape that it is becasue of people like you all. The only mistake banks make is giving you all accounts! Accountability people.
Kelsy346 10/04/2008
Just to let you all in on this, it isn't just Suntrust - it is ALL banks! ALL banks have excessive fees, all banks have tellers that place holds on checks, any company in the world has someone that doesn't have the answers to your question. What people are saying about the fees is 100% correct. If you make ONE single mistake in your check register (for those of you that actually have one) you will pay the price and it will be a big one! There has to be accountablity and that falls back on the consumer. 99% of people that overdraw their account do it excessively. They never learn and they're the reason why banks can get $350.00 dollars in fees alone in ONE day.

Needed a FHA loan to bridge buying a home in another state, while the current home was closing. "Friend" realtor agent recommended SUNTRUST mortgage. You'll get a discount knowing me! Current loan 5.625% 30 yr on primary home in Colorado SUNTRUST was terrific - 'gave' me their BEST rate 6.125% 30 yr I refinanced about 10 months later at 5.5% 30 yr FICO = 760 Simply a receivership for fees. Not one I'd like to build a relationship with -

Sun Trust is NO different than any other bank. If you overdraft you will be charged. If you do not write down every time you swipe your card or every time you write a check, than you will one day overdraft. And it is no ones fault but your own. What people dont understand is that when you use your debit card, it might not auto. take the money from your account. So thats why you need to WRITE EVERYTHING down. If you dont than you need some kind of overdraft protection cause you will mess up. I have been reading all the comments and every one seems to be mad because they were charged fees for what THEY did. Do not spend money you dont have and you wont get fees. That simple!!! As for running the pending items through largest to smallest, think about it...... most of people largest bill are for their homes or some thing of that importance. Would you want your bank to pay all the small debit transactions and not honor your rent????? Dont think so. Call around, just about all big chain banks do things that way. Dont get mad and blame the bank for your stupidity. I work at a bank and it never fails, people love us when everything is ok, but when they overdraw their account, than we are to blame for their carelessness. As for people saying that workers are rude, I take that with a grain of salt because if bank employees are rude to clients, than they loose their job. I wish people were more responsible and didnt try to find someone to blame for there mistakes. Some people never grow up....

SUNTRUST STRIKES AGAIN! THIS WEEK I GOT SO FED UP WITH THEM THAT I CLOSED OUT MY ACCOUNTS. KIMBERLY AT THE AVALON PARK BRANCH LEFT 70.90 TO COVER THE LAST CHECK FOR 70.90 AS I DID NOT WANT CHECKING CHARGES SINCE I CLOSED OUT MY MONEY MARKET. OF COURSE TODAY SATURDAY 9-13-08 I GOT A NOTICE OF A INSUFFICENT FUNDS AS I ONLY HAD 70.14 IN THE ACCOUNT WHICH WAS 76 CENTS SHORT OF THE AMOUNT OF THE CHECK. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE????? I CALLED THE 800# AND SPOKE WITH CARLA. I WAS TOLD THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED AND THAT I WILL HAVE TO GO TO THE BANK ON MONDAY TO CLEAR THIS UP. HAVE I MENTIONED THAT I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH SUNTRUST. THEY STARTED CHARGING ME A CHECKING ACCOUNT FEE OF 25 DOLLARS EVEN THOUGH I HAD MANY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN THEIR BANK. I INFORMED MY FRIEND MARGIE WHO CHECKED HER STATEMENT AND FOUND THE SAME THING GOING ON IN HER ACCOUNT. WE BOTH GOT THESE REMOVED BUT NO EXCUSE AS TO WHY THIS HAPPENED. IS SUNTRUST TRYING TO BEAT THEIR CUSTOMERS OUT OF MONEY TO PAY OFF THEIR MORTGAGE DEFAULTS??? WHATEVER THEIR PROBLEMS ARE THEY HAVE LOST AN EXCELLENT CUSTOMER, WELL THAT IS IF I CAN EVER GET AWAY FROM THEM AND THEIR POOR BANKING STANDARDS.I AM HOPING THAT MONDAY I CAN GET THIS MATTER CLEARED UP....WE WILL SEE.

Suntrust charges for incoming wire-transfers. On top of it they will hold that transfer for a few days. The money is wired, yet they will still hold it. They charged $15.00 for receiving money (amount was for the total sale of your home). I can understand a wire-transfer fee for sending money, but to receive it? This was new; very new. I soon realized, I was dealing with a "different" type of bank. I was so mad about the fee and the hold, that right away I realized that I need to deal only with this bank only for my convenience. I've been with Suntrust for 2 years now. I have never trusted them, and I watch them like a hawk. Keep your balances above the red line and you will be fine. And do not make a move without first asking them what the fees are. The news says that banks on average make over $250 / customer on fees. I believe its much more at Suntrust from what I've read.
Lindie 08/27/2008
Suntrust is nothing but a rip off bank with their tricky ways to charge you their NSF. We are switching banks!!
LyleM 08/08/2008
Will nickle and dime your account to death. Had to pay $210 in NSF fees even though the day before I had more than enough money. $105 in fees for less than $5 in purchases. Jesus.
jomosima 08/06/2008
SunTrust explains to you the overdraft fees when you open an account and if you wrote a check or did a debit they are not mind readers and do not know what you spend or what checks you write They only know what has cleared your account there for allowing you to withdraw money you say you dont have.Balance your check book daily and spend what you have ...If you overdraw your account you will be charged regardless of where you bank but SunTrust will generally pay the item and charge you a fee ,other banks charge you a fee and send the items back unpaid resulting in a charge from the company the item is payable to.Suntrust also states unless its a bank error fees will not be waived read the new account material given to you by the financial institute you open your account with .As for placing holds financial institutes will receive notice from the other financial institute that the dollar amount they debit from your account is for an item that is going to be returned unpaid, this protects loss of monies to all parties involved. This also prevents check fraud and other fraudulent activity resulting in loss to financial institutes. Also you are given a letter about the hold if this is not acceptable to you ,you can always ask for the check back to take it and have it cashed at the bank it is drawn on and deposit cash into your account.

I gave my apartment complex a post dated check and without my consent SunTrust cashed the check. Now I have overdraft fees totaling $400 and 2 different supervisors refused to assist. I am irate #1 because they cashed a post dated check and #2 because of there poor customer service and desire to go above and beyond to help. SunTrust just lost a four year customer due their incompetence and rudeness! DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH SUNTRUST!

I am a senior citizen. I sent an online check on my bank (not SunTrust)to a contractor who worked on my house. My online bank sent the check to the contractor's correct address. Somehow the check was intercepted by a third party and deposited into a SunTrust account, according to the information on the back of the cancelled check. The check was not endorsed. My contractor does not have an account at SunTrust. Only SunTrust, who accepted the check for deposit, and the party who intercepted and deposited the check, know who got my money. Suntrust refuses to look into the matter and the Annandale VA SunTrust branch told me it wasn't their problem, although they allowed their depositor to deposit a check in a SunTrust account made out to someone else's business and that had no endorsement. I had to repay the contractor and have no way of finding out who intercepted my check and deposited it in a SunTrust account because SunTrust won't help me. All they have to do is look up the account from the information on the back of the cancelled check to see who deposited the check, and withdraw the wrongful deposit from their depositor's account. It seems to me that if SunTrust cannot recover my funds from their depositor, then the bank should be held responsible for accepting a check made out to a business that is not their depositor, and for accepting the check for deposit without an endorsement. Disgusted and ripped-off senior citizen.

First off I have to say I balance my checkbook daily, I keep records on how much money I have and do not blame the bank for my faults if it occurs. The customer service at SunTrust is absolutely horrible. My husband and I just moved and decided to switch to SunTrust because their cut off time is later. The Rep. who signed us up told me 6pm Mon-Friday. I went to make a deposit one day and it did not clear that evening. I called and asked why and was told the cut off time was 4pm. I was annoyed that I was told different, so I called the local branch and actually spoke to the lady who signed us up, she said and I quote "You just were not listening the cut off time is 5 o'clock". I told her what their 800 number told me and she said no, it's 5 o'clock. I was never given the benefit of the doubt that someone at that bank might actually have told me wrong, and on top of all of that I was told THREE different cut off times. And then to go back when I opened the acct. we signed up for the business checking with FREE checks. A week later? I was charged for checks. I called the 800 number and the person on the other end would not even hear me out when I tried to explain, she said the first set I was given at sign up was free not the rest. Which was wrong, I pulled up the info. on the acct myself and called BACK to get someone else who would finally just listen to me and realized I was right, I should never have been charged. So to sum it up, the customer service is HORRIBLE they will not listen to you at all. I am happy to go back to a bank that has a cut off of 2 o'clock just so I don't have to deal with them.

After reading most of these posts, it seems like most people should be mad at themselves rather than at SunTrust. I have worked in the financial industry for awhile and I'll enlighten some of you that wonder about how things work with all banks. Note: I DO NOT work for SunTrust. 1) When you sign up for a checking account at any bank, you have access to find out what the overdraft fees are along with other fees charged. Some of the posts on this web site are unbelieveable. Some say that they barely withdrew more than they had in their account and they're mad they were charged an overdraft fee. That doesn't even make logical sense. The question here is not by how much. It's if you DID overdraft or not. If YOU took more responsibility for your own finances than expecting a bank to do it, you'd be a lot better off.
2) Account closure fees. I mean, come on. You complain about having to pay the fees but all banks have them. You can't really complain about this. How else does the bank pay for things? There have to be fees for the bank to function. Everyone is looking for free things. NOTHING is free. Free things don't work. That's capitalism.
3) It's too bad there aren't people on here saying the good things about banks. Things like they keep us from having to keep our money in the mattress. They also make it possible for us to buy things that would normally be waaaaay out of our range like a house.
All in all, you really shouldn't put down one bank over another. They are all pretty much the same and provide services that are necessary to lead a fruitful financial life.

Never use Sun Trust for a car loan. I pay online WELL before the due date, but they say the payment is late so they can charge a huge late fee. I had to pay the loan off with my home equity line of credit so they would stop charging the late fees.

I was a contractor with Sun Trust Mortgage helping them move in Washington state. At first we thought they were nice and they brought no dissatisfaction to us while there. But after the move they gave a company report that was essentially a 'hit piece' attacking us, exaggerating bad and saying NOTHING good- They did not show gratitude, or compassion, or try to see good. Their only goal seemed to get out of paying of some of the hours. We took special care to save their equipment from being damaged so they wouldn't lose any business time. This shows the some of the kind of people they have working there / managing there.

I used to work at a bank(not SunTrust), but constant complaints from customers drove me away. I got to fill my days with complaints from people that can't stop overdrafting their account. I really feel like banks get many more complaints that any other type of business. People want to blame other people. The bottom line: banks offer overdraft protection and if you use money that you don't have you will be charged. It's kind of like paying a really high interest rate on a credit card. Atleast, banks actually pay the people that you have made an agreement with instead of letting you go to the wolves and have to deal with legal issues with companies. Every single bank is similar in policies. Banks do not get anything out of holding your $30, cashing your checks, processing your deposits, or giving you free checks. Banks truly offer a free checking account. Your part is to not spend more than what you have and they will hold on to your money for you. Banks cannot lend out money from a checking account so they basically make nothing out of it. The reasons banks offer free checking accounts is to form a relationship, so one day they can help with all of your financial needs. Thats how it works. Do your part.

By the way, still haven't received my card. Remember the manager who was supposed to mail me a card first class? I forgot to mention that it was a "computer error" and all the cards that were supposed to be mailed out that time all got screwed up so they mailed them all out 1st class? Just got off the phone with them and was told that he wasn't allowed to do that because, apparently, that whole 1st class deal applied to something else entirely. Therefore I have to wait another 5-7 business days for my (1st? 3rd?) card. In all, 5 different excuses (sorry, I accidentally erased my first post, but basically it said that Suntrust sucks). Nothing but shite.

had suntrust for 6 years. first year, no holds on deposited checks. now, 6 years later, they can debit a deposit if it doesn't clear in 3 business days, but 5 business days later, and commercial deposit (local bank) still not clear. Run, do not walk, run and get your money out. last 2 years, suntrust had been trying to be the worst bank in the country.

Somehow the ATM allowed me to withdraw MORE FUNDS THAN I HAD in the bank (due to a late processing of a check I had written several weeks prior); in addition, this occurred WHILE I had a $2500 direct deposit coming through and being processed. So, the end result? I go in debt $50 because of an ATM transaction that should not have even gone through, and have to pay $35 on top of that?? I politely emailed and explained the situation and requested that they waive the NSF; their response wasn't even a "yes" or "no", but instead a FAQ of how I can get an overdraft protection line by depositing a bunch of money in another account, or getting a home equity line (I DO NOT OWN A HOME) So, basically, they are useless. If you want a great bank, go with ING Direct. I will be transferring all of my Suntrust stuff to them (only drawback is: they are an online bank; no branches. But free ATM use, easy and good website, 4%-5% interest on all accounts with any balance and no fees and no minimums, as well as an included free overdraft line of credit with no fees, at about 10% interest if you use it. Awesome!)

I had a checking account very shortly with this bank, it was my first checking account when i just got out of high school 5 years ago. I wasn't making enough money to deposit money i not he account yet so most of the time the balance stayed at $0 when i went from making 5.15 a hour to 9 an hour i was going to start depositing money, well come to find out they had closed my account, charged $30 to close the account, then charged my $35 as a overdraft fee and then charged me $30 because it was going be sent to collections and then a overdraft fee for that as well? wtf, they left my account open long enough for then send through these bogus transactions? but wouldn't leave it open long enough for me to start depositing a descent amount of money? They should change there name to Sun UnTrusted Bank, nothing but crooks.

To date, I have spoken with over twelve Customer Service agents from SunTrust, and EACH has given me a different story. Last year, when my husband and I sold off his car, we had to deal with SunTrust to get the title. That was a nightmare. Now I have to deal with SunTrust again, as I paid off my car loan and am fighting to get my title released. SunTrust agents are consistently misinformed or incompetent. Unless you want significant problems, do not use SunTrust for anything.

I'd give them a zero, if I could. Yesterday, before 5pm, I called and had $524. I knew I had a payment for $205 that was going to hit any day and we made small debit transactions over the weekend. I had a 1500 check to deposit, but since it seemed like it could wait until today, I waited. Well, at midnight, applying the highest to the lowest, as they say, in order to maximize their fees, I paid $315 in bank fees. The check I deposited this morning before 9am will not post until midnight, so all day I've had a negative balance and could not even put gas in my car at Costco (have to used debit). It's very hard when you can't see what the pending items are. They just come in at midnight. With my other bank, I could see if stuff was coming in I forgot about and I would immediately make a deposit so everything would be covered. But you can't do that with Suntrust.

I WOULD NOT even rate them with 1 star. Do not deal with anyone at Suntrust Bank especially the Sprayberry Branch. A particular teller there has made it her mission to place holds on everything I deposit. I deposited more then $20,000 in local checks and Suntrust placed a 5 day hold on ALL of the funds. They did not even release the first $100. DON'T BANK WITH SUNTRUST!!

This bank has decieved us. They have over $11,000 of ours! It seems that our checking account was closed without our knowledge. Not even a phone call. Where is our money? Do not go to the Branch on Hwy 17N in Mount Pleasant SC..... Do not go to the Branch On Pelham Road in Greenville, SC.

I wish I had checked this site before I opened an account for my college student. As stated before, Suntrust's policy of charging overdrafts (of $35.00 now)as soon as something is pending. We experienced the same death spiral of charges. The bottom line is, a 19 year old student deposited $350 over 15 days, spent $165 AND INCURRED $420 WORTH OF FEES. Horrible customer service, no help and no refunds. AND BY THE WAY, the 1st bank fee for "unavailable funds" was the item that overdrew the account. AVOID this bank.

I hate Suntrust. We have a mortgage with them and I have to say it was the biggest mistake we made. It was a struggle since the beginning. The worst part came when we all agreed on the price of the house and the date of the closing and our loan officer couldn't be reached for 4 days! Our agent, title agency, seller's agent... everybody tried to reach him. Then we received a letter (after they said that they're ready to close) that they needed additional documents and started digging into stupid things like a deposit on our account for $1500 3 months back! Our pre-approval letter almost expired. That wasn't all. When we finally closed on the house 3 months later we got a call from Suntrust that they gave us a wrong rate and that they want us to sign a new contract!!! They keep calling...
hatesuntrust 03/26/2008
Suntrust is a horrible bank to bank with. They are all over Vanderbilt campus and set up stands outside the freshman doors during move in and convince every kid to bank with them. Basically they get every student to bank with them and then take advantage of the fact that they are students with little money. If they see that you are going to over withdraw... even by a couple cents, the will process the higher transactions first, so that all the little transactions will cause -35 fees each time. I made a mistake and took out too much money, 50cents to be exact, but they somehow managed to start charging me fees before I had ever done so!?!?!? I ended up being charged $140. I then deposited CASH to bring my balance up to a positive amount and the next day I was charged another fee!?!?!?!? IT makes no sense. They don't care about losing costumers because they know they will just get the next group of freshman.
JDPaschal 03/14/2008
Suntrust will ROB you. I had a money market account with them. I made the mistake of just keeping the minimum balance. They, not me, ordered checks for that account. The checks did not cost much. Just $5.00, but it was enough to lower my balance below the min. balance. They then charged a round of $20.00 fees. I tried to prevent being charged twice for the same thing by IMMEDIATELY putting money back into the account so that it has the min. balance, but that did not work. I argued with them that this was a transaction that I did not initiate and that THEY were the reason my account balance went under. They NEVER re-imbursed me for this. The second time I've been upset with Suntrust is when I asked another bank account to do an ACH transaction from my checking account. Suntrust "doubled" the transaction and I did not have enough money to cover all the charges, and thus, got overdraft fees. I argued to customer service again that I only asked the other bank to make only one transaction and they blamed the other bank for making the mistake. They did not re-imburse me for the overdraft fees that was done in error. The third incident: Suntrust adds up all my transactions for one week and subtracts it from my beginning monthly balance. I went under only $2.50. If they set up my overdraft protection that I initially asked for, then I would have only payed $10.00 in overdraft fees. They would have deducted the excess amount from my savings account. The checking account wasn't set up to have the overdraft protection and I wound up paying a total of $140.00 in overdraft fees. It should have been only $35.00. Suntrust prematurely charged me an overdraft fee BEFORE my account balance went down to $0.00. Since they charged me that fee before it went under, I wound up deeper in the hole you see. CUSTOMERS BEWARE. SUNTRUST WILL LOOK FOR WAYS TO GET YOUR MONEY AND WILL NOT RE-IMBURSE YOU FOR THEIR MISTAKES. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS INDIFFERENT TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. THIS BANK DOES NOT RATE ANY STARS.
Rugah 03/13/2008
Suntrust is no different from any other major banks out there. They have, in my opinion, worked a lot on their customer service skills. I have my mortgage, checking and savings account through them, and haven't had any complaints. They have actually been very helpful with me when situations have occured. I still think they are not very competitive on the market (I applied for a home equity loan and their offer was beaten out by my Credit Union), but overall, an ok player. Maybe it's because I've never been late on a mortgage payment, and have a mortgage account with them as to why they have been so cool with me.
SomebodyElse 02/26/2008
Like a lot of people here, I know it is my fault for overdrawing my account. But Suntrust does unfairly take advantage of us paycheck to paycheck types. The worst part is how they even up your account during overnight processing. I had a balance of $259. Withdrew $240 - which became some kind of damn pending transaction. That night a check for $250 hit. Guess what? 2 - $35 overdraft charges. Does not seem like this should be legal. I dont care what their procedures/policies are. I had enough to cover one or the other and only should have been changed 1 overdraft.
Wilson321 02/10/2008
SunTrust does not know the meaning of customer service - they make mistakes, they are proven to be their error and they still do nothing to make it right for the customer. SunTrust has proven to be an arrogant, self righteous banking institution who can not be trusted to do right by their clients.

I give Suntrust a big fat f-----------I have a complaint against Suntrust Bank, On Feb 5th 2008, The IRS took a forced debit out of my checking account of 1053.00, my issue is not with IRS, but with Suntrust. I owed that money to the IRS and that is taken care of. I would have not known the money was even deducted out of my account unless I went to my online banking and found the deduction. I have been a loyal customer when Suntrust was Hamilton bank. When I called the 1-800 to inquire who took the money, it was a foreigh gentleman who couldn't speak english, when I finally got someone who could speak english they informed me in a rude way that Suntrust was not obligated to inform me of any withdrawls from my account. After all the money that I have put in their bank over the years they were not obligated to tell me that someone had removed that much money from my account that it would be wise for me not to write any more checks or debits? I am no longer obligated to bank at their financial institution anymore, and I will be taking all my family with me and whoever I can get the word out to. I do not want to bank with a business that does not have honestly, loyalty , obligation and courtesy and a fundamental building block of their business. It is the small people who make that business run. I have so say that I am very lucky that this happened because in the next few weeks I was getting a 300,000 life insurance from my deceased fathers account that I will not be depositing into their bank. The internet and word of mouth is a very good marketing tool. Spread the work Suntrust has one person in mind themselves, they are not for the people.

Suntrust screwed my livelyhood royaly! My plan is to write at every web site and tell everyone what horrible bank practices they have. I had a line of credit and I missed 2 months. I know I messed up. So I made a payment to make up for the late 2 months and a week later it went into collections. I recieved no notice by mail or phone. They took out money out of our joint account. BUT!!!! The first amount was for 1474.00 and then the next day they took out another 1700.00. Well we work hard for our money and that left us with nothing. Not only did that leave us with nothing but the lack of communication we had paid our bills and such so we ended up negative almost 2k and stuck us with NSFs. Mind you we had to ask our family for money to get gas and food. So when I called to find out what was going on,I kept getting transfered and put on hold. Finally someone said that they can take out money anytime they want without giving notice. So I went to my local branch because I could not let my credit get messed up like that! Well they train their phone peopl well to say exatly the same thing. The person that tried to help me said it was messed up they did that and he never knew about the common practices or protocol. So we went to another branch where we signed for the line of credit. They were very nice and very confused why this happened. When they made the call they were told the same thing and only thing they could say was we are sorry and they thought it was unfair as well. in fact one person said that we should close our account with Suntrust. So after finally getting our account from the negative, I called Suntrust about what options I have to make payments since it was on auto draft and I was about to close my account out. I talked to 4 different people, and the last lady was so rude!!!! Again I will make it a point to tell everyone NEVER to go to Suntrust. If people that work there dont even bank with them then why should anyone else. And why try to endure talking to people who obviously don't care about your welfare. Suntrust is a only out for themselves!

Sun Trust Bank gets a grade of F from this teacher. I have been with them for three years and have paid some outrageous fees. They take their time putting in the deposits but very quickly like to withdraw your money so they hope you will be overdrawn. This last incident takes the cake!! I am a teacher we get paid on Dec. 21 and get another check Jan.31.That is 6 weeks with no money. Well, they made sure that the biggest amount got taken out and then started charging fees which then made the smallest transactions bounce and then they charged more fees. This was about $350 dollars in fees.Well, of course when I got paid the fees were paid. Well, then they froze my check card where I could not use it even after the fees were paid and my paycheck was in the bank. When I called about it, they were rude and said they would not unfreeze the card for another month. Well, needless to say I am closing the account and going somewhere else. I feel like I got treated like a crap by them and it was not fair.

I would not recommend Suntrust to ANYONE!!! An outside creditor was taking money out of my account as payments for a credit card I had in college, which was fine until they made a accident and took it out on the wrong date. Of course this caused my act to overdraft. After explaining to the bank what happen I was told that they have nothing to do with the creditors error and the creditor would have to refund my fees!! WHAT? Not to get into extent of it all, but I was charged a 35.00 fee about 3 times because of pending items that cleared and would have been okay had he not made the mistake...The creditor was even willing to call Suntrust to clarify and they still did nothing about it. To top it all, I was given misinformation that my account would not get written off until 90 days after its in the negative. I called to make sure that my account was still active before I sent a direct deposit to it and the next day they closed my account! Even though they explained I had 30 more days until write-off. Its like they wanted my money for the overdrafts fee but did not want my service anymore. People go through hard times and they charge you excessive fees to get your more in debt. SUNTRUST IS THE WORST BANK EVER!!

They have alot of locations, and extended hours for the ones in the Wal Marts...but several have been robbed around us lately.

Suntrust is one of the worst banks ever, with the most amount of ignorant staff and the most irresponsible managers. I can't call them anything except a bunch of thieves!?

This is December and I've been charged 1/3 of my salary for the month in charges from SunTrust Bank. I take responsibility for overdrawing my account but there is no possible way to catch up when you are facing such excessive charges. I will be closing my account today and I can tell you, their stock will drop immediately because I feel I've been carrying them for a long time now in the charges I've paid. Burke and Herbert Bank is the bank for me. They treat customers as customers with value and respect and take the time to call you if you have a problem. You are not JUST a number to them.

I wish I could give SunTrust 0 stars. This bank will rob you blind. If you have a SunTrust account, wait at least a week after making a deposit to write checks against it. Otherwise, you could find yourself being charged hundreds of dollars in overdraft fees and SunTrust won't care what the circumstances are, even if you have NEVER had an overdraft in the 3 years you've had a checking account with them. SunTrust will allow you to make ATM cash withdrawals and debit purchases when your account is in the negative while charging $35 for every debit. I had a returned deposit because they changed their bank policies without informing me, which resulted in $245 in overdraft fees. I have spoken with other people who tell me that they have never had a bank approve debit transaction while their account is in the negative. SunTrust tells me their doing me a favor by allowing me to make purchases. Why on earth would I make a $5.00 purchase if I knew it would result in a $35 overdraft fee?

I find most of the comments laughable. If I was SunTrust I would rape you on fees also... to lose you as customers. I have jumbo mortgages, investment accounts, etc etc with Suntrust. Have been with them for 10+ years... Which says a lot as I am very particular about who I bank with. Note to the other posters... Learn to manage your accounts and not live from bill to bill... Blaming the banks for your lack of money.

A++ for this bank. I am dumb founded at the comments people are posting here! Just because you don't know how to balance a check book you want to blame the bank. First all, this bank does NOT hold a check longer than 5 days (IT IS A REGULATION), I think you mistaken it for Bank of America! 2nd, if you charge something using your debit card, the amount goes into "memo" & YOU WILL be charged an NSF fee as your didn't have funds available... yes, your overdraft fee appears first 'cause your item was "pending".. bottom line if you don't have the funds, don't use your card!!! I agree, the fees are HIGH... BUT SO ARE ALL BANKS!! NOT JUST SUNTRUST!! 3rd, ALL CASH DEPOSITS are available IMMEDIATELY!!! ALWAYS!! This bank also turns over at 5pm.. not 2 like most banks. Also if you deposit a "Suntrust check" it will clear the next day, as long as the funds are available in the account the funds are being pulled from! Again.. against regulation to hold a check for a MONTH!! NEVER HAPPENED!!! All new accounts (under 6 months) have a reg CC hold (again regulation). 4th - After closing your account & you owed money, it's obvious that you had other items outstanding... which was probably returned, never paid & the added USF. 5th - As far as a check not being cash because the check # was already cashed... TRUE! If you have a person go into a bank to "cash" a check it can't be done if that ck# was already used!! It will work for your online payment because it's an electronic payment! And when a check is "altered" it can be refused! Since it was your own check, who knows.. maybe the teller was NEW!! ***FLORIDA IS THE #1 STATE FOR CHECK FRAUD*** Know who takes the lost for bad checks??? The teller!! ***Gift Cards... I've never heard of ordering gift cards. You simply go INTO the branch and purchase the giftcard! ***Bottom line.. I've dealt with a lot of banks.. so far SUNTRUST is the best! Bank of America, hate to say is the WORST!!

I bank with Bank of America. They are a great bank. But when I went off to college there was only one BOA in town. Which was surprising considering BOA is the the largest banking institution in the country. So I sign up with Suntrust and noticed their banking practices were totally different. Different in a negative way. I overdrawn on my account for about $30 but in the end I had to pay $318. First off Suntrust charge NF(overdraft fees) for items that is pending. And on your account they don't clear items in which they were recieved. They clear items from largest to smallest. I'm a college student and I leave check to check. I take responsibility for overdrawing on my account. But its funny how a few $2 purchase and one large purchase end up being $318. Then they charge extended NF if you don't pay it off in 7 days. Then they add on more fees if you dont pay it off in 30 days. Its hard to even explain my situation without it sounding to confusing.

Suntrust is the Worst bank! Their NSF and USF fees are horrible. I've recently had to pay over $500 for less than $100 charges, which wouldn't have been a problem but the fees were applied AFTER I had deposited the money to cover the charges!

To me Suntrust bank represents just a group of thieves that steal their customers money using their poor programmed system. I'm sorry that I had to give one star, otherwise I couldn't pass this page. It doesn't deserve even one star!

Apparently SunTrust's computer is programmed to apply their 'end of day' transactions in the following order: first all debits are applied, highest dollar first and then the credits are applied. They do not appear to use real time when doing this, even tho the federal government has stated that banks must apply transactions in the order they are received. This is so confusing to a lay-person and I honestly believe they are charging hundreds of dollars in overdraft fees inappropriately. If you have a 'normal' balance of a few hundred dollars you probably wouldn't even notice their practice. But many many of us run household accounts down to a few dollars monthly, and those are the accounts they make a nice profit on. I'm reporting to the BBB and the fed, and requesting a thorough audit of my account history with SunTrust. Bank of America is a welcome change to the horrid treatment I received as a customer of SunTrust.

Recently I was overdrawn on my account by the amount of 10 dollars through 5 miniscule transactions. Total cost ===A WHOPPING 185 DOLLARS IN FEES. I almst feinted . I called customer service and the branch , some were nice but others were bordering rude IF NOT RUDE , claiming that "I was in control"..Now if I was in control wouldnt I have my own bank and i CERTAINLY WOULD NOT CHARGE MYSELF 185 DOLLARS FOR A MEASLY 10 DOLLAR TRANSACTION. People dont bank at SUN TRUST ..I was with HSBC for 10 yrs and only switched because there was no local branches and have NEVER had this problem. Now I too have joined the Bank of America Family I too have written to the BBB concerning this practice. Let's hope that someone at SUN is watching these notes so they can change their act Danny B
