Albany, NY 3

Albany is a company town, where 27,000 out of 100,000 residents work for the state. Ok, make that 200,000 in the metropolitan area. Companion cities Troy and Schenectady were abandoned by employers and have turned into rustbelt-like ghettos.

Albany has a resort mentality. There's LOTS to do in summer, nothing in winter. One week we went to a free concert on seven consecutive nights. It's only 20 miles from southern Vermont, and almost as close to western Massachusetts (the Berkshires). The Hudson River Valley south of Albany is beautiful, as is Lake George to the north. There is good food to be found in out-of-the-way small restaurants.

Albany, NY 4

A great little city. Close to Saratoga. Less than a 3 hour drive to NYC, Boston, Montreal. Skiing in the winter, Lake George in the summer. Saratoga Flat track in August. Summer home of the NYC ballet and the Philadelphia orchestra. Near Tangelwood. Great colleges and more.
