They are horrible! They closed my HELOC because I was 10 days late on a payment... my first late payment, and only by 10 days. So, rather than give them interest payments, I refinanced, paid off the balance and THEY charged ME a $350 early termination fee! How is that possible? They closed my account. All I did was pay it off and they they whammy me with that fee. And, I agree, their customer service is horrendous. I've emailed, been on the phone... no one seems to be able to tell you anything useful. If there was an option for a negative star, that's what they'd get.

National City is the best bank I've been to, never had any problems and when it said i was over drawn like $150.00 they credited my account $150.00 + $50.00 for the inconvinence. I dont know which national city you all bank at but the one i bank at has the best service i have recieved from a bank.

piece of shit bank. Hidden fees, terrible customer service. I bank with Chase. I understand having to charge fines and such when people make mistakes, but at least Chase has a vast communications program that will let you know when you are overdrawn. Unlike National City who will keep it a secret from you on purpose so they keep bilking you for money.

This bank engages in deceptive, dishonest, fraudulent, & unethical business practices for the sole purpose of ripping off their own customers for a profit! Their customer service is just pathetic! Very rude, mean, nasty & anything but helpful. They only know one line...It's not the bank's error! And these are the GOOD things about this bank! Beware!

This bank is a joke and is being run by a bunch of used car salesman. My son while serving in Iraq used his debit card to make a 3.00 purchase. Despite having funds in the account, there was a hold on 50.00 due to an error at a gas station. They charged his wife for what she bought, and put a hold on another 50.00 even though she did not use the pay at the pump feature. National City claimed he was overdrawn, 82 cents on his 3.00 charge. They saw fit to hit him with a 34.00 fee and then started the 8.00 per day charge for the next 3 weeks before he was even made aware of it. His .82 cents has now cost him close to $200.00. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. The branch manager in Traverse City, Michigan claimes there is nothing she can do if this is not the banks mistake and that he should have called earlier. Sorry he has been a little busy in a combat zone. My wife and I have over 500,000.00 in CD's at National City Bank and will be transfering them to another bank before the sun sets here today. You may have won the battle but you lost the war.

National city needs to do what makes sense and that is take transactions out in the order that they occur, not largest to smallest! That's bullshit! For instance, I had $65 in my acct. and paid a bill for $50 by check, leaving me with $15. Then I deposited my paycheck and paid another bill for $80. The $50 was pending one day, then the next, the $80. But when I looked at the dates, they had switched which amount was coming out first! Yes, they took my 80 first, which put me negative for the 50 coming out. What happened to my paycheck and why didn't it count? Because National City is the worst f@*#%ing bank ever! If everything would have been done in the order that it happened, everything would be fine. If anyone banks with NC, you need to change, they will do nothing but screw you in the ass! And no, they will not lube up first!
sarahgrace 01/14/2008
The on-line banking offered by National City is horrible. I used to love the ease of being able to transfer money from my savings to checking and vise versa. However, recently the on-line banking allowed me to transfer money from my savings account that wasn't actually there, even though it said there was money in the account. My husband went to the bank to ask about the situation and they told him that the on-line information is not always the same that they have at the bank. Why would you offer a service if it's not kept up-to-date and if it's not reliable? I am going to switch banks as soon as possible.

25 year customer with National City....until this month. National City hit me 4 x $32 = $128.00 for anticipated overcharges. Branch Manager credited $32.00 with the comment, I see those kind of charges and transactions more and more. Screw them.....opened a new account with a true community bank. Moved $7,000.00 out of National City CD's and added $20,000.00 plus for CD's at the new bank. My loss = $96.00. National City loss...they don't really care. I feel good about this!

The people at National City Bank in Grove City, PA are very polite and even patient. On my birthday, three days before Christmas, I sat in a dark room next to a heater by myself. I was devastated for what losing $34.00 meant to my family. By virtue of an overdraft of .35 just prior to my husband's direct depost paycheck at midnight, I was charged $34.00. I have been ill and trying to keep out of the hospital for my children over the holiday. I can't see leaving my family with $40.00 left over from more bills than Christmas presents for my family to care for themselves until the next paycheck. They could certainly use the $34.00 alot more than National City. People don't care because they are governed by "The Rules" of their big institution. Little people don't stand a chance against them.
tnadeck 12/19/2007
Terrible bank, terrible service. They charged me 8 overdraft fees in one day because they posted my check after my debits. They couldve easily paid 7 of those charges and charged me on overdraft fee, but it is their policy to charge largest to smallest and thus maximize the opportunity for charging fees.
danja75 12/03/2007
Nation city bank has charged me 4 oveverdraft charges(ODC) $34.00 each for 4 pending transactions that posted the same day Nov. 26 2007 when I had money to cover 3 of the pending transactions! These transactions wasn't made the same day, but posted the same day! I contacted the bank and talked to 1 of the tellers and she told me it's National city's policy that when 4 transaction post at the same time you will get 4 different overdraft charges! The charges was an total of $108 and some change, I had exactly $107.88! Three of the transactions should've been paid for, which I should've only had 1 (ODC), not 4! I went to the bank and the manager could not show me on paper where that was National City's policy! I told him that they was stealing from me! Once they took they money out , they pending items went through! You see this is right around christmas, HUM BUG!!!

wow. I wish everyone would quit complaining! Do you not receive terrible service just about everywhere? It's reality. People are rude and businesses have crazy policies that benefit only themselves. Go ahead switch to another bank and more than likely a few years down the road you'll be saying the same thing about them.
aleister 11/04/2007
National City "lost" a $60 cash ATM deposit, did not notify me that the deposit, which had been credited, was now subtracted from my account, and then charged my account $200 in overdraft fees for several small debit charges that totalled about ten dollars. Coincidence --the deposit was a cash deposit and they claimed that it could not be found. I find their practices highly, highly suspicious.

I have been a customer with National City for 10 years now and I don't know why so long. I am surprised at the comment below about reversing overdrafts, because it has never happened to me, even when it was the bank's fault. The straw that broke the camel's back was a call I made to customer service a couple days ago. I had canceled a few of my recurring automatic online bill payments a couple weeks ago, and to my surprise when I checked my account a couple of days ago the payments still posted. The customer service rep told me there was nothing she could do, and then told me that I was making it up because National City never makes mistakes with online bill pay!! I have worked in customer service for years and I would never even imagine telling a customer that they were a liar and my company is always right. If anyone has a suggestion of a good bank in central Kentucky, please let me know!

I live in Georgetown, KY. I applied for a home equity line of credit. I thought I had good credit. I have recently purchased a home and new car. I have over $100,000 of equity in my home; however, somehow some collection action showed up on my credit report--things I don't know about and must be cleared--in other words, some sort of mistake. National City, who got over $150,000 worth of handling my money last year, denied my loan request. I understand that the credit rating hurt my application and I that it must be repaired (I have to dispute the stuff and it will take at least 30 days to clear up) before they can reconsider my loan. But what I don't understand is WHY IS my local bank manager now RUDE to me! Jane, you really shouldn't burn bridges by being rude to your bank customers!!! I'm so disgusted that I'm ready to switch banks!
Oedipusauras 08/22/2007
I'm starting to realize that there is little, to no, point in wasting my time investigating services or businesses on these "review sites". The only people that take the time to post on them are people with grudges. Nine times out of ten, the issue or problem was generated by the person's ignorance to a situation or policy. For instance, I've been a customer of National City Bank for over ten years and not only have I not had any problems...I've even had overdrafts reversed. As a long-time customer service employee for several companies- I can say that it's truly sad that the only time anyone takes the time to comment is when there's a problem. Very sad. No, I don't work for NCB nor does anyone I know. I'm just irritable and frustrated with the unsubstantiated negativity found on this site as well as others. Yes, banks make mistakes...CSR's are rude...managers say/do dumb things...but that is NOT always a direct reflection of the institution/company's policies, procedures or tactics.

National City has wonderful face to face customer service. But I called about a strange charge on my account. I got 3 differing answers from their phone agents. I am appalled. I have had good relations with the bank for some time now. But it's time to call it quits. They just are too big.
denbeath 07/31/2007
National City Bank is awful. I have had several problems with them. long story short, I incurred overdraft fees. National City took the money from my son's account. I paid my son back, we both closed our National City accounts and changed banks. National City got their fees paid but now they are attempting to collect the same fees from me again and my son. I personally know 5 other people who have had similar experiences with National City and left them. Unethical Bank. I give National City a BIG ZERO

What a wretched bank, with robotic and impersonal policies!!! As a 8 year customer, I'm closing every single account, loan, credit card and mortgage. Their latest scam was to hold our tax return check of $2300 for 3 weeks because it was an "out of state" check. We confronted the manager and they admitted that they would have been happy to just cash the check for us and let us deposit the cash, but blamed us for not thinking of it. 5 checks bounced, at $34 each then they charged $10 for each of the 5 transfers that they took from savings. They intentionally manipulated the drafts so that the largest was taken out first thus making the next 4 checks that were all less than $20 each bounce in succession. They charged us $220 in fees for being about $25 short on our account, when our savings had all the money required, and they did not notify us that they would be holding our tax return check for so long! Congress is currently working on making these preditory practices illegal. We threatened to sue, and the only way that they would back down was if we opened a different type of checking account. Now that that is done we are leaving and preaching the word of how rotten they are to everyone we talk to about banking!

I cannot even begin to describe how many times National City has screwed me over. First off, when I had a fraud complaint (someone took my account number and charged 149 dollars without my consent) they said it would take atleast 6 months to investigate and still have not contacted me about it and to this day will not return my calls on the matter. Secondly, it takes almost a week for any check that I write to go through and one time I waited 2 weeks for 4 transactions to go through. This is not very helpful to a poor college student who is living pay check to pay check and has to rely on every dollar she has. I have been charged 34 dollars for going over 2 cents (literally). This bank treats college students like stupid spoiled kids who are living off of their parents. Unfortunatley the area that i go to school is basically monopolized by National City and its the most conveneient one to go to. However, after the last time I was charged for over drafting (I had 6 transactions go through from up to a week and a half ago) I am switching to La Salle or a credit Union.

National City Bank are in essence thieves. The tellers and various employees are not to blame, but the upper management who makes their policies and determines procedure on how to best steal your hard earned money should be made to compensate out of their own pockets every last penny plus the same usury fees they charge their account holders. Mind you I am not saying we should not pay their fees, but when they manipulate the post dates to maximize their profits, that is criminal. Go here and post your National City rants. It is about time the people stood up to the banking industry:http://natcitysucks.proboards52.com/index.cgi

Yes zero stars, While I have had pretty good experiences wiht the people who work for the bank, Andi t is amazing how many overdrafts I have been able to get back when I cal them on their practices the deliberately withold deposites tot set you up fpr overdrafts if you write a check Wednesday evening and then deposite cash Thurshday morning they will charge an overdraft. And if you need an laon to help in a financial pinch forget about it if you have less that stellar credit. Thay love to take your money but they don't want to lend it out. I love the $10.00 charge to electronically move money from savings to checking to prevent an overdraft. The best was a $10.00 to move $1.34 and if you want to get money out at the bank and do not have a check, they charge you $5.00 I feel like the kid from Mary Poppins. I will be leaving National City soon!! Also talk to people who work for then most liked it a lot better when it was a locally owned and operated bank
Guenhwyvar 06/01/2007
TO NATIONAL CITY: You charged me numerous times for one overdraft, and I have overdraft protection. I've paid them more than twice for the same overdraft fee. You are too quick to judge every single person on this page. By the way, before you go insulting everyone else on this page, check your grammar. You obviously work for National City because your grammar matches their incompetence with numbers, and your attitude matches their callous, indifferent approach to customer service.

Allowed my 16 year old to open a checking account without any authorization from an adult in which he overdrew and was then charged $8 a day for 15 days for fees. The total to close the account was $220. How can a minor be held accountable?? Why wa she able to overdraw like that with a check card???
aleeohio 05/15/2007
National City bank uses blood sucking techniques to maximize it's profits. It would be ok if they had customer service to make that experience more pleasant. They have customer service reps who are degrading and demanding, even when they and the NCB computers are wrong. They posted my payment to the wrong account, then threatened to send me to collection and then did not apologize for their screw up. Their computers still pumped out three letters demanding immediate payment even though payment had already been receieved and taken out of my checking account. If you have a choice DO NOT choose National City Bank.
robbin12 05/11/2007
When I started banking with National City about 10 years ago, it was a fine, friendly "hometown" bank...a LOCAL bank. However, the past few years since they have been in acquisition mode, they have totally lost site of the measly consumers who helped the bank grow. Unsavory business practices, exhorbitant overdraft fees, and NO PROFESSIONAL FINANCIAL ADVICE! I went to the bank trying to explain why I was late with my mortgage practically every other month...biweekly pay. DO YA THINK one of the "professional advisors" could have suggested the optional payment plan (Accellerated Mortgage). Not only will I not be late, but the mortage is split between each pay check AND I end up making an extra payment every year, thus paying my mortgage off sooner. DUH. Went there just the other day....and mentioned it to one of the "experts"...and he was CLUELESS such a program exists! DUH! Consumers have to be more proactive because we cannot rely on them for sound financial advice.
kevin63 04/15/2007
Customer service has gone downhill. Branch managers are trained not to refund you any money when overdraft fees break a personal account agreement. No mater how long you've been a customer or how much you have in savings accounts they will take your money. I've been with them for 15 years and never seen it this bad. I have over $10,000 in my checking and savings accounts and they took $700.00 from me in November. My attorney notice they broke a US Banking regulation back in November and we are taking them to court for several thousands of dollars.

National City Bank is looking to take advanage of anyone. If you don't like your money, use National City Bank. National City does not have any policy to PROTECT YOU FROM THEM. they allowed 11 over drafts in two days on an account that I NEVER SPENT MONEY FROM. They could have stopped the attempts or contact me, but they would rather have my money and loose me as a so called "customer." They will take your money not think twice about doing it to someone else again.

REcently I had to start working with a credit card consolidation company because we got behind in our credit card payments due to a severe pay cut and hours cut and I couldn't find another job. All my creditors except for National City were helpful in this process. The woman I talked to was nasty and said if I didn't have $300 in their office the very next day which was New Years eve they would begin sueing us! I explained my situation and told her all my other creditors had recieved their proposals from the consolidation co and were working with me to get us out of debt and back on track. Needless to say most of my credit card payments are late equally as long but this is the one bank that is doing all they can to make my life miserable and I really am trying to get these debts paid and current. they don't want to work with you. I think this country is in serious trouble because they have allowed banks to charge people fees that are completely out of this world to the point where even if your job situation changes you cannot possibly get caught up and I told the lady at National City that. If I had the money I would have paid it, I had a perfect payment history with them for years along with all my other credit cards! We work for the local school district which are ALL in finacial distress and this card had a low rate for people in the MEA but I have had problems with them for the get go. My husband would call for the balance before he would use his card and inevitably he would go over limit! so I would call and she would say something ridiculous like it was finance charges or something else stupid as hell and I said but I just paid the bill! I never got a reasonable answer. So folks do yoursleves a big favor and get one Visa or MC for emergencies and stop using credit cards. It's all a big racket and all we are doing is working our asses off just to give all our money away at the end of the week! All they do is take and take. All I want to do is pay the balance of the bill I spent -not on their hundreds of dollars of fees on top of fees!

I agree that National City Bank is not a good bank. They are typical of private institutions who are purposely behind the times in online check registry. They boast of awards won for their online system, when in fact, its really worthless. I kept two accounts open (A Crdit Union & National City) and watched the differences between the two. The Credit Union System gave us more forsight into our transactions; it posted transactions much quicker than national city, and at the same time gaves us fair and ample foresight into the future. National City's, on other hand, will play on trickery to deceive the customer into going into the negative. This isn't a bank for an active "PAY THE BILLS" Checking account. We made cash deposits, spoke to banking representatives and tellers who reassured us we wouldn't go into the negative, and it still happened. The idiot who says it's all our fault for not keeping records is obviously unaware of the true reality behind the scam that is privete instutional banking. National City is a Private Institusion interested in acquiring profit. He's also unaware that private instution banks make nearly 1/3 of their profits by inheriting money from NSF fee's. Give me a break. All I know is is that the credit union's online system was somehow organized that it didn't confuse the customer. National City's is stuck in the dark ages. The only good thing about the bank is that it interfaces with Quicken and MS Money easily. But if their ripping you off of your hard earned dollar's, then what's the point? I've had some accounts with private banks that don't play like this. Northern Trust in Chicago is one of them. However, this bank was an exception. Unfortunately, the business practices of private banks 9 times out of 10 lean towards an unfriendly direction to the consumer. I'll stick with the in town Credit Union for now. --Champaign, IL
tbebrown 11/02/2006
Your kidding. National City is one of the worst banks in the industry. I have been with the company for 7 years and always did limited banking with them. Because I am also a member of the credit union. Recently, I had notice overdraft fees on my account. I though nothing of it because I said maybe it was my fault. Then today I had 8 overdraft fees. I looked on the web site to see what was going on and WOW! The items which were pending and had received overdraft charges. Yes, the bank had taken the money out to pay for these fees. However somehow by pure magic. Pending Charges were redistributed after I took out a lump sum. To put into another account. Ok, they took the pending cash out so all the charges were covered. So how did I receve non-suffient funds? The told me yes, the money had been taken out when your items are pending. I told the customer service agent that I was leaving after 7 years if they cannot resolve the issue. She said OK. Can you believe this. I have banked with them for 7 years. No problems because, like I said it was minimal banking. I went out on the internet and found out that this type of scam has happened to quite a few people. I told a co-worker and she said it has happened to her on a few occassions. She said here direct deposit goes in at 6:00 a.m and they post withdrawls at 5:59 to ensure that customers are charged for overdrafts and NSF. Well thanks alot National City. This is how you treat a 7 year customer.
ceoonthego 08/14/2006
National City Bank is horrible. I was charged a 34.00 fee for transfering 5.00 from one of my accounts to another one of my checking accounts because even thought I account showed a positive balance they did not credit a "pending" deposit to my account before the 5.00 transfer was made. Not only that but they refused to refund the fee stating it was not a bank error!

We've moved from Canada, had extensive history working with the American AND Canadian Banking system and national city bank, amongst other american banks, is far far inferior to the banks we work with and HAVE worked with in the past - Coming from someone with a very indepth banking history, National City truly is twenty years BEHIND! Good luck, kids - You're going to need it! National City is simply a child offering subdued and often dangerously out of date services that cannot keep up with the demands of the people - Wake up! When we put a check in an ATM we should have INSTANT access to that same auantity - Strange idea? Ask the thousands of Canadian banks! Face it - There's more than security at risk . . . There's an angry MOB.
stacyann 05/23/2006
This is the worst bank I ever had- they need to train their employees better because I've never seen so many mistakes. It's to bad.
Willkon 01/26/2006
My son had eight overdraft charges because National city would not clear a payroll check for 5 days over the MLK Holiday. His Online Banking and ATM balance all showed enough money to cover the outstanding checks. We are presently pursuing reimbursement through a number routes. So far most regulators say the policy is probably legal but unethical. There are ways to put heat on these guys. We'll back here and let folks know how
foffnationalci ty 01/09/2006
National City is not a bank for people who live paycheck to paycheck. National City will manipulate the numbers and do whatever possible to promote overdraft fees. I have had my fair share of fee's before , however i have never had the bank blame the retailer for a obvious lack of follow through when the bank is at fault like National City did to me. Six overdraft fees in one day. National City can kiss my ass.
cchanx 11/29/2005
I am going to every single website that rates banks and tell everyone how bad a bank it is. Again, don't go to this bank- they are worse than credit card companies.
nationalcityba nk 10/03/2005
I hate when people blame the bank for their own mistakes. It is not the banks fault that you overdraw your account, it is yours. Keep better track of your money and you will not have that problem.
jbuttry 08/20/2005
National city is horrible!! They charged me three overdraft fees for $34 all in one day for one charge!!! This bank is notorious for crediting deposits late!! National city posts all debits BEFORE they post deposits, resulting in false overdraft fees.
razorwit 02/11/2005
I am pleased to see National City's 5 star ratings. I have changed banks several times due to other promotions or mortgage requirements and every time I wish I hadn't left National City. They have been very competent and reliable from my experience and I will soon become a return customer once again. My one little complaint is they could use more local ATMs. I keep spending extra dollars at other ATMs, because there seem to be so few National City ones around.

I agree with Willie. They have a fine bank.

I created this weblist and of course I'm going to promote my own Bank National City. They have nice service, minimum fees, and they give out gifts to customers.
