Historians must not forget that the Bush administration was not watertight: there were plenty of dissenting voices within the government all along. When he is hopefully put on trial in the near future, Bush will not be able to offer the excuse that military officials didn't know better, because they did, or that they misled him, because a large number (perhaps even a majority) opposed him, though too few did it publicly. One of the bravest exceptions was Ann Wright. A retired Army colonel who had taken an active role in managing Afghanistan, Wright knew that Iraq was a mistake from the beginning. Along with two other brave employees at State (each of whom made their decision independently), she resigned in March 2003 with a scathing letter of protest, and hasn't given up her commitment to the preservation of our republic, being arrested on multiple occasions in acts of protest in Congress and other locations. Wright deserves some of the attention that whistleblowers like McClellan have been getting, but has so far remained an unheralded hero.
