Has anyone else read the recent newspaper articles about how Dillard's is close to being bought out? Not a big surprise. The Dillard family is a bunch of cheap, selfish idiots that have extremely poor business sense. They treat their investors almost as bad as their employees! I tell everyone I converse with to shop anywhere but Dillard's. Seriously, the brands & prices are so much better at Macy's!

Only good thing I can say about Dillard's is their sale prices are good. I work at the Dillard's in Cheyenne, WY, the place is a complete mess, the ceiling is falling in and they wont fix it. As is standard for all dillard's us sales associates are treated like crap. If you request a day off you are garunteed to be scheduled that day, management doesn't give a crap. They constently complain that we cant get people to take their stupid 25% interest credit cards. One of the managers (not mine thankfully) is completely psycho, most of the others dont care about their employees one bit. Their dock personnel are seriously overworked, paid less than sales associates, and treated as bad if not worse than the sales staff. I plan to quit here as soon as I find another job. If you must shop here just wait for the 75% off sales. Do yourself a favor and dont even consider working at one.

I worked at the one in Ogden too. The balding manager (forgot his name, but it is too insignificant to actually remember) is a pompous fool who LITERALLY treats the salespeople like they are beneath contempt! I don't need to really go on about what a joke Dillard's is because everyone has pretty much said it all for me. I liked some fellow associates and still talk to some of them. I just can't get over Mr. no hair though. The guy really does need to get a clue.

working at dillards is like prostitution on the streets, i would suggest you work PART-TIME 25HRS for 3 months so you can get the disc and buy nice business clothes for ANOTHER JOB. don't forget to put aside $300 a week in the Dillards federal credit union to pay for therapy after you leave- you will need it, any future PhD s out there can do a study on this sales per hour = Dillards prostitution. Doesn't the dillards family realize how much money they are losing on employee turnover---DON'T TRY WORKING AT LOWES HOME IMPR-- you will work w/ rednecks

I love this store. They have high quality merchandise, and if you know how to shop, you can get great deals. As for all this negativity to Dillard's, I think it is the employees that just can't deal with the demands and they have to complain. Didn't you know you had a quota to make when you applied for the job? And even if you did have a bad experience, whether you were a customer or an employee, you should realize that was just those people that you had bad experiences with and not Dillard's itself. You should know that there are a lot of ass holes in this world, and you just have to suck it up! As for myself, I have had nothing but good experiences there and the atmosphere is friendly. There are good people at Dillard's. You just didn't get the opportunity to meet them. Hey, how old do you have to be to apply at Dillard's? ;)

I'm actually a dillard's employee and I've been woking there for about 4 months and i can seriously say I would rather shake my ass for cash then go into work. IOur Manager Mr. Smith(Smitty)is an idiot I can count the number of times I seen him on one hand, and when we say hi to him he just looks at us like we r retards. My ASM Winnie is a stupid scatter brains, and Our organizational manager Karen just sit in her office giving orders. I remember during training she told me i had to wear pumps everyday, I worked in retail before I know standing on ur feet for 8hrs is not easy especially in pumps. I just through my review and I missed it by one point and they raised my SPH and told me I need to sell more but if there is no one in the store how???? my Advice to everyone in the free world NEVER WORK AT DILLARDS IN THE HULEN MALL FORT WORTH TX!!!!!!!

The way the employees badger you to open their stupid credit cards is ridiculous - I no longer shop there because of this

dillards blows, I worked at the ft lauderdale, fl dillards for a little over a year. First of all there were two different standards for gay and straight people. And by straight people there were maybe 10 of us in the whole store. Their pay system is also messed up. Rather than increase, they'll start you off at 8 dollars and if you don't make your goals they'll decrease your pay rate, if you do make your sales goal they'll let you keep your current salary but increase your goal

Dillards is horrible!!! The employees are such hard working people and the management treat them like slaves. The Dillards in Waco, Tx is the worst one ever! Mrs. Judy Gibson is a very cold-hearted person. She has no respect for her employees or the customers. To her it's all about the $$$$. Im just waiting for the day they close the Dillards in Waco, Tx down and turn it into a Macy's. And yes i am a employee at a Dillards, and to the other employees of Dillards. I hope yalls bosses arent as big of an asshole as ours are...

I worked at Dillard's for a grand total of three weeks. I'd never worked retail before, so I didn't know that the quota thing wasn't the norm. Then I did some research and found out that it's not the norm, and boy did it turn some of my co-workers into some sharks. I don't think I met anyone *at* the Dillard's I worked for that was happy to work there. I met a few long time employees that were good at their job, but they were not *happy*. The ASM's - contrary to what I've read here - were willing to work around my schedule, and I often saw them busting tail on the sales floor with the rest of the staff. I did often see the managers on the floor too - though they were not working, but more "supervising". However, the quota did put a lot of undue stress on people, and there was heavy competition for customers among the staff. Turnover is high at Dillard's and the pressure to sell is fierce. In the three weeks I worked there, I could see they were understaffed and sadly in need of proper management. I caved in under the pressure. I'm just not that competative. I would have never made the quota and couldn't deal with the sharks. I'd only recommend working at Dillard's to someone who has salesmanship in their nature.

Sounds like a lousy place to work.

I used work for Dillards in Arizona , basically you have to go for fight every day was a nightmare, managers dont care about employee they are more concerning about sale, and every morning we had to do markdowns and merchandising and clean up fitting rooms and beside all that we have to make our sales goal, and some associate they were just standing by the entrance and say hello to each single customer and of course she will keep all the sales, and when we complain the manger will say nothing at all. Any way it is a horrible place to work for just go and click your web browser and go for job opening in retail the first thing you will able to see Dillards, you know why?? Because people are coming and going so quick they can not handle that shit. I dont know when Dillards corporate will wake up? They should change their strategy of selling... They should take care of their employee.

I got to admit dillards in vegas has such a high turnover its not even funny. I see people come in day in and day out. Some of them dont even last through training. This company is a very poor company. Its policies are very stupid. They have no sympathy for anyone. The sales per hour thing is crazy that if u dont make ur sales per hour u loose 10% of ur pay. Thats insane!!! The management is very poor. All they care about is their store. They must wonder why so many people quit......I wouldnt refer anyone to work for dillards. It has horrible customer service and there prices are way too high. Oh and one thing i recommend for dillards is dont compare yourself to Macy's because u will never win...
pdill80 02/28/2007
I agree with a previous reviewer's response that this company does not even deserve one star. I used to work at Dillards' part time, and would dread going to work everyday. I decided to apply there because I needed a job and at that point of time they said that they would be flexible with my school schedule. Overall, no individual with any kind of life should apply here, because guess what, the management will not care one bit! All they care about is your SPH and money, plain and simple. I told the hiring manager that I only wanted to work 20 hours and week. They said that would be fine, but after I started working there, I was always scheduled for more than 20 hours a week. Let alone, all the days I needed off from school I was scheduled. The manager that I had must have been just out of a psych ward. She had no people skills whatsoever, and always had an attitude with you and customers coming in. If you tried to page her, half the time she wouldn't answer. Likewise, one time I had to call in sick, do you think that I got one ounce of sympathy? Heck No! I was told that I should come in and deal with it basically, and if I don't I better get a doctor's note. Give me a break! Not only that, but Dillards is the last place to close and let their employees go home if there is a Blizzard. Last December, Colorado was pounded with snow, and of course Dillards's was the last to close and the next day they expected their employees to come in. My department in accessories always had boxes of items that we couldn't stock. So, we just had to leave them there. I mean tons of boxes left on the floor even during store hours. The place was such a mess. You had to clean it contantly to make it even look halfway decent, and at the same time make your sales per hour. I could go on and on about this horrible company and I only worked there for 2 months. I would only recommend someone to work there is you are (a. greedy and willing to step on anyone to get a sale. (b. have no life. (c. psychopathic. All I can say is that I am so happy that I no longer work there. Yipee!
Chocalady 02/26/2007
I agree with everyone. I work there part-time and have been off and on to earn extra money. I used to work full-time but part-time is the only way I can stand it. As far as the ASM's and the store managers I don't know what kind of trip they're on but its ridicious. There are two Dillard's in the town I live in. When I went back to reply for seasonal work only the closest store near me I worked for wouldn't hire me back. In fact the Cosmetic ASM made snide remards about me behind my back to my boyfriend on the sales floor. She said something to the affect,"Like how many times does that make her applying to this store?" Luckly, I knew the Cosmetic ASM at the other store ( about a 30 minute drive) who did hire me back for seasonal work. Her department did over a million in sales last quarter. Here is the reason why the other B&*ch wouldn't take me back BECAUSE I BECAME A FRAGRANCE VENDER. Stupid reason! I had work for her under one of these three top cosmetic lines ( Estee Lauder, Clinique, Lancome) In fact anyone who did work under her eventually left the store to become a vendor. Which tells you something about her management skills. SHE HAS NONE! From what I had heard and seen, she had had over 10 openings in cosmetics. Which is very rare, especially in cosmetics. As for the store manager, she convinced him not to hire anyone who left the store and became a vender and his dumb a** listened to her. Peronally I think the two are sleeping togther. The only thing I want to complain about with the store I currently work for is that security enjoys watching the employees more than the dang customers. Its like they don't trust the people who work their butts off. Glad I am only seasonal with a few more weeks to go.
dcmcgartex 02/22/2007
Dillards was the most horrible nightmare job you can possibly imagine. Managers are lazy, stupid, incompetent, and treat employees like small children. F--- Dillards, it is the WORST place on earth to work at. Like slavery. Overworked, treated like dirt by stupid, lazy managers, given impossible sales quota, no breaks, simply the worst experience I have ever had. I hope the stupid company goes out of business.

I am a former employee of the Ogden, UT Dillard’s, and while I’m no longer affected by the unethical (and borderline illegal) way they treat their employees, because I quit a few weeks ago, I do have many friends who are still employed there and I can’t believe this company - or at least this branch of it - is still in business. Makes me ecstatically happy to know I no longer work for this company!!! I won’t shop there either and have boycotted Dillard’s forever and have told everyone I know or run into to boycott this department store too and then I tell em why! Below, is a list of just some of the unethical (at the very least) things the Riverdale (Ogden) Dillard’s has done, and is still continuing to do, to their employees, which I myself witnessed first hand or was affected by when I was employed there. This list is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg of wrongdoings this branch of Dillard’s has committed against their employees. I could sit here and write for hours about all that is wrong with this company and the Ogden branch of it in particular - but I will narrow it down to just three things. 1. Several times (especially when the store is about to be visited by the owners or other VIP’s on the next working day) this branch of Dillard’s has literally locked their employees in (and I mean LOCKED IN - CANNOT GET OUT - not even in an emergency) after the store is closed! Employees are not allowed to leave until the store is in the exact condition and appearance the store manager wants it to be, even though he is sure to leave before the store closes. They (the management) literally take the key OUT of the dock door, (which is the only exit in the store people can go in or out of, after the store closes, for all the other exits are sealed off with heavy & solid security gates) and they refuse to allow anyone to leave until the store is in the pristine condition they want it to be. It doesn’t matter if they (the employees) are scheduled to be off at that time, and have rides waiting, or have to be somewhere else, or have children needing to be picked up, or even if there is an emergency at home - etc. - they (Dillard’s) don’t care. The bottom line is during a “lock down” no one is allowed to leave until the store looks exactly the way the upper management wants it to look. And if this were not bad enough, employees are not given any warning that a lock down is going to happen until after the store closes, so they can’t even call to let their rides or family and friends know they are going to be late. Worse yet the employees are not given even the simple courtesy of a time limit, about how long this lock-up incarceration will last. When asked, the management’s pat answer is usually this uncaring reply: “As long as it takes to get the job done. It could be fifteen minutes or three hours or all night. We don’t care how long it takes, for no one is leaving until the job is done to our satisfaction, and not a second before then…” (Or words to this effect…) Okay I’m running out of my word count allotment here so I will post 2 & 3 as replies to this post...

It's give and take. The Slidell, LA isn't so bad. But a lot of places I worked before were much worse. The SPH (sales per hour) and quota cards are different, they don't tell you that, but they are. If you make your quota on the quota card, you're pretty much guaranteed to get a 10% raise. If you don't, you're probably okay. The pay is good, and we do have insurance for part timers, but it's "economy" which means cheap sh*t. They have worked with me on my schedule. I always get my weekend off and I only work one Sunday a month. I work only two nights a week. If I miss a day, I am able sometimes to make up. But never ever have I been able to earn overtime. And when we did inventory, we got a break on the clock the second night, it ended being about 16 hours total between the 2 days. Anyway, it may not be the best job around, but I'm okay there. My ASM loves me, and upper management isn't up my *ss, so I'm okay there. I came out of the nursing field, and later plan to go back, but that's a job that'll burn you, being a lowly CNA (which really nothing lowly about but how you're treated). I've had worse jobs and I know there are worse jobs out there. Just remember, no one's perfect. But I can say the Dillard's in Slidell, LA is pretty decent to their employees, I know I am appreciated there.

I have worked at Dillard's in Ogden Utah for several months now and am trying to find new employment. Never in my life have I ever worked for a company as corrupt as this! I don't even know where to start, and I'll probably leave some things out. I know each and every place of employment comes with the standard gripes and complaints, but this is much, much different. They give you impossible quotas that you have to reach and then put far too many associates on the floor. They pit us against each other like we're in a dog fight and there is always tension, even if we all get along to each others faces. If you're not a greedy vulture who steps on people's toes, then you'll get a paycut. This is normal at Dillard's. (2 paycuts and you're fired) The paycut is about a dollar, which is significant and unfair considering that they do everything to set you up to fail. Besides what I just mentioned above, the managers will give you certain tasks to take you OFF the sales floor so that you don't get sales, such as markdowns, stock, and displays, etc etc. It's ridiculous. Sometimes there aren't even any customers whatsoever yet four of us working the floor and none of us get our sales goal, they don't care. If you are under quota, it will carry over to the next day and you'll have to sell twice as much the next day to make up for it. When a customer returns something on your number it also takes away from how much you sold. If you are OVER quota, it does NOT carry to the next day. Most of the managers throw their weight around like they are almighty. The most guilty is our top manager. He hasn't smiled since I started working there and the way he sneaks around and watches us is unnerving and creepy. The managers tend to treat us like little children. I've seen this so many times in several departments. It is unwarranted in most situations. When I go back to their offices they are usually sitting at their desks eating and talking. Wow. When we did inventory? ... We worked 12 hour nights yet we only got a thirty minute lunch that we had to CLOCK OUT for and were not given any breaks. This violates employment laws. I am disgusted by the way they never say thank you for anything or appreciate a thing we do and the morale of our store is low beyond all reason. All they care is that you get them their credit apps (which is so intrusive to the customer!) and that we sell their products and work our asses off so they can cut our pay and they profit. I've figured out their game a looooong time ago. It's a game. The turnover is HIGH, way above average. In my short duration there I have seen countless people come and go. That's because they are basically getting the hell out of there while they have the chance. The person who said, "next time you go to Dillard's, watch the employees closely, they are all unhappy"... or something along those lines. It's true! I'm stuck in this job right now until I can find other work but since getting this job I have never been so sick. It's like it's draining my health and mental energy in every sense. It all comes down to corruption. Dillard's is corrupt but all you will see is smoke and mirrors. It seems like a nice store but if you get closer you will learn all of its dirty little secrets. PLEASE don't ever work there. It's not worth it. I hope they close their doors!
gr8white 01/29/2007
Dillard's is not a store I would recomend anyone working for! It is the most unfair and negative working environment I've ever experienced. I'm a good employee, make my numbers, get my credit, but that doesn't make a bit of difference. First of all the company policies and rules change from week to week. They treat you like an incompetent child. You can go for months before you get a weekend off! ( of which they say you get one per month) They schedule you for 10 days in a row without a day off and work more than 2 nights a week. Now they're making us stay after for an extra 1/2 hour after closing to straighten other peoples areas. If you like to feel devalued and berated by all means apply. Maybe all stores are not the same, but MacArthur center has the highest turnover rate in Virginia! DILLARDS IS THE MOST AWFUL PLACE TO WORK!

Has anyone worked at the Dillards in Salt Lake City, UT? Any words of advise for getting a job there?
ClumsyNinja 01/12/2007
I worked in the Men's clothing department for 3 months. It was all I could handle. I should have quit after my first 5 minutes. My advice is, do not apply if you 1) go to school 2) have a family 3) have responsibilities 4) have any sort of life. DO apply if you are 1) a masochist 2) are a robot I really think they hire their managers straight out of the psych ward. There are a thousand things wrong with this company. In the short time I worked there, I was humiliated in public and screamed and by a manager (who talked down to me like I was a 5 year old who just painted graffiti in my room.) All because they over-ordered product and I was having trouble finding room to display it. So I dared to ask if she preferred me to find an extra shelf, or a table. They threatened to cut my pay because it was impossible to reach my quota. They threatened to fire me because I couldn't find enough people who wanted to fill out credit card applications. These are just a few examples of the joys of working at Dillard's.
CxO 12/14/2006
After spending the past 15 years helping global companies turn around their business-to-business sales organizations, motivating sales teams, and building customer relationship management practices.... I took a break, became a Dillard's sales associate for a couple of months to understand how they handled customer service (considering this gained knowledge as a possible entre into retail sector engagements). I have found Dillard's practices to be absolutely amazing. This experience is providing material for an article on "what not to do" in customer relationship management and perhaps another on demotivating employees. Contempt for employees and customers alike is evidenced in a belief that if one is lost; there will always be another to take the place of the former.
steeve86 12/08/2006
Although the best I have had in my life, surprisingly enough, the company itself has a stupid setup on how the company treats their employees. Cheap ass health plans that don't help much. Pay probably 25%-50% of the health costs. The sales goal is just ridiculous! I'm supposed to sell between 600-2,000$ a day and if I don't sell that much in the day it tacks onto the next day. But whenever I do make my sales quota and go over by a couple hundred, it does no good because it doesn't count toward the next day. Next off, a good thing about working where I do is I actually get praised for good work. I hate the way we get stock and 20 of one item we don't need... and half the time actually have what we need because Dillard's itself doesn't carry it. Ah, the work can be either stressful, or boring. There is hardly a day that goes by its mediocre. Damn Dillards and that music makes me go insane! :D

they are snobs don't deal with them, racist too!iwould give them 2 thumbs down

I was wondering do Dillard's employees get paid weekly or bi-weekly?
marbrown 10/12/2006
I will never order by mail from Dillard's again-especially when I need an item to take out of town asap!! The packer or inspector of these skinny jeans KNEW that the botton was defective. There's a whole behind the button that can not be repaired because there's a hole where the fabric should be. It feels like I filled my order through the drive-thru of a fast food establishment and didn't check it until I got home. Now it's too late and too far to return it. I'm in a lose-lose situation and the inspector and their supervisor should be fired...Donald Trump style! You rate on the negative side of a scale this time. Minus five stars.

Dillard's is a geat store..sounds like a bunch of incompetant workers that can't do their jobs or are lazy one
tarnaicole 08/11/2006
I (somehow) managed to work at Dillard's for 7 months before I walked out on them. My god, where to begin? A lot of my issues are the same as others I have read here - the sales per hour b.s., the unprofessional management, the petty competition between co-workers, etc. Also, at the store I worked at there would be long stretches of the workday where you would not see a customer. The store would open at 11 am and you wouldn't have a customer until 3 or 4 in the afternoon, sometimes you would not sell anything all day! Yet you are still expected to hit that sales goal. And despite the lack of customers they still expected you to look busy (even though you have already done everything there is to do), god forbid you sit down for a little while or talk to a co-worker while NO ONE is around. I was a full time employee and was eligible for health insurance but it was still much too expensive and wasn't very good anyway. They have absolutely no regard for their employees and that is the main reason I couldn't take it anymore. I went to work one day and checked my paystub on one of the computers and discovered that my pay had been cut from $8.50 to $7.65 without any notice whatsoever. I was under the impression that I would have a meeting with my manager informing me of any paycut. In the weeks leading up to the paycut they totally blow smoke up your a** about how great you are and how you can make your sales goal. I actually bought it for a while! That was the straw that broke the camel's back. So in closing- DON'T WORK FOR OR SHOP AT DILLARD'S!!! They just chew people up and spit them out!
DDEF 08/10/2006
i work at dillards now...our store manager is an ignorant bitch our dept managers are awsome , sales per hour is bullpoop, me and my friend who work in the same dept (wich is pretty cool) had enough with this one woman who kept stealing sales and not doing markdowns....and of course in the morning you had to listen to the "and in this dept blahblah is top sales person" so we finally had enough and brought it to our dept managers attention, and the sale stealers rebutle was that me and my friend stand at the registers all day and talk, and that i dont like her because of her nationality! i cant believe she would stoop to that level! but either way she is transfering to a diff, dept...all in all dillards is hell in the form of a dept store, dont even think about working for them its not worth it...
disgruntled10 07/27/2006
I was employed at a Dillards store in Arizona. I actually had to force myself to stay for a month because I was hired at as time when money was really tight. I wish I had done my homework on Dillards before applying there for a sales associate position. I hated working there, the sales per hour goal is ridiculous in concept and I have been working in retail for over 20 years now. Dillards has one of two choices: get bought out, or go out of business. The sad part was, my fellow employees were great and I made some friends there. During the month span I was employed by Dillards, over ten people in my department left (one left after only two days!). It is company policy that, if a customer returns an item that you sold them, that percentage on your sales per hour is deducted from you. Talk about unfair practices! There is something seriously wrong for Dillards and I for one will never shop there nor recommend that anyone shop there ever again.
pjmintp1 07/05/2006
I am still employed at Dillard's but not for long. I will be quitting soon. The corporate attitude toward employees is that we employees are beneath contempt--employees are exploited and treated with disregard and disrespect by Dillard's corporate policies and by management. It is depressing and dehumanizing to go to work every day dreading the "sales per hour" rule and the "open as many new credit accounts as possible" rule. Did you know that the interest rate currently for a Dillard's charge account is about 25%? Dillard's will not give part-time employees any health insurance, but demands a doctor's note for any day that you are out ill. That means that someone making 8.00$ an hour at 30 hours a week and trying to LIVE on that has to shell out $90 to a physician just to get a note verfying illness. If not, you can be fired for being sick 3 times.I live on a very tight budget (I am a student)and do not have $90 to give to a doctor. Maybe if Dillard's gave health insurance benefits to part-timers I COULD go to a doctor! Dillard's will reduce your hourly pay rate by 10% if you can't reach or exceed the arbitrarily set "sales per hour" quota. If you go more than 4-6 months unable to raise the $ amount-per-hour that you sell, they ESCORT you out of the store in a walk of humiliation. They don't just fire you, they also have to humiliate you infront of fellow co-workers and customers. Also, if Dillard's finds out that you are in the process of looking for work elsewhere but are waiting to be HIRED elsewhere before turning in your 2 weeks notice, they will fire you. All Dillard's wants is that 2 weeks notice and they don't care if you have a new job to go to or not. Also, I have actually seen a corporate memo sent to management staff at my store telling dept. managers to stimulate fiercer competition between employees because it will stimulate sales. The atmosphere of dog-eat-dog competition between employees is so strong it is scary. Wlak into a Dillard's Store and take the time to notice the employees. Just observe for a while . You will begin to see a lot of miserable, even depressed, workers. It is just wrong that a company as large and prominent as Dillard's can get away with wanton mistreatment of employees. There is more to this Dillard's mess than I can describe here. Dillard's makes hell look like a spring picnic.
Shopper00 07/04/2006
Ok, stop right there. The Dillard's I work at is nothing of the such. I have worked for Dillard's for almost 5 years. I started when I was 19 on dock, doing stock and housekeeping. I have since moved up in the company. Dillard's has given me a huge opportunity in my life. Yes..they are aggresive, but its retail people (which by the way, I think everyone should work retail at least once in their life). And as far as being overpriced?..guess what people, I have seen the figures on their markups, and I got to tell you, you would be surprised of what good of buy you are actually getting. If you want discount prices, go to a discount store. IF you want quality, welcome to Dillard's. Dillard's is always improving. Of course it has its flaws, but believe me, once they recognize the issue..they act. I have been in management for 2 yrs now. As far as those lazy ASM's...they are acting on that as well. I have worked hard all my life for Dillard's, not only is the pay excellent, but my upper management team are awesome as well. They are expecting more from the ASM's (which they should). They are providing continuous training. Bottom line, if you want opportunity, give Dillard's a try. Oh and as far as that sales quato, I received two raises when I was on the sales floor. My customers were repeat customers and I had HIGH product knowledge. Selling is not about how much you ring up...its about your customer service, and your product knowledge.

I completely agree with the previous poster about Dillard's. I have been working for Dillard's for the past six months and they are horrible. The managers are very incompetent and lazy. My managers at my store just sit in the office most of the day and talk b.s about their employees. Now we do have a new stupid rule that if you do not open any credits apps for the current month, you get written up the following month. My manager had the nerve to tell her department that if we did not open any credit apps for the month of May we shouldn't even bother to request any days off for July. I believe that if I am asking every single customer than I am doing my job, I have no control over whether they want a card or not. I just placed in my two weeks notice and I can't wait to leave there. Also, the word is getting around about Dillard's too. No one wants to work there. We have people quitting left and right and management is having a hard time recruiting new people. Dillards is not receiving any applicants and the managers are going around the mall searching for homely people as I heard one manger say. F*** Dillards. I hate this place and I hope they go out of business very soon.

I currently work at Dillards and management (along with their outrageous policies) are terrible! Like someone else said, management never comes around and they barely ever answer their pagers! If you need help with something you just have to call customer service because management doesn't even care. You're responsible for a sales per hour, but it's impossible because they flood the floor with employees so you're all fighting for sales. They expect you to get your sales plus want you to stock, do layout design and markdowns. They made each employee sign a paper saying we'd try to open an instant credit each week, but NO ONE wants anymore credit cards! Our country is in enough debt. They keep changing schedules so you get in trouble if they make changes and you don't get them. They always mess up my hours. I'm supposed to be part time because I'm a college student, yet they keep putting me on full time. It's been a terrible experience and I'm currently looking for a new job.

I am a current employee at Dillard's. I am only 18 years of age and thought that since my mother worked for Dillard's for a very long time that I would enjoy working there as well. She warned me, and let me tell you, she was right. First off, i've never worked somewhere where the management yells at you, calls you out, and embaresses you infront of other employees, customers or management. The management is unprofessional, and uncaring. I work for fragrances and there are now 13 women working for my one counter. I am supposed to make sales goals while competing for sales against the 5 or 6 other women they have working the same counter the same day, it's just not possible. I am questioned at-least 3 times a day as to why I have not opened a credit card application. I never get my requested days off, and I am made to feel as if I am a slacker if I ask for one a month in advance. My grandmother recently passed and I wanted to drive with my family out of town the day before the funeral and my manager told me that I couldn't, it would be unexcused and made me feel guilty about the whole situation. When I finally called out the next day to go to the funeral my manager called my cell phone and asked me why I had taken the day off. When I retuened to work 2 days after she yelled at me infront of other employees and told me that I can never ask for another day off, while the other employees had asked why I called out, and questioned where I have been, obvioulsy my management had told them I called out. I barely made my quota for my review, I didn't get a pay-cut, but I did not get a raise, and because of that, my goals are now much higher. I am not eligible for a raise for a year now, and I will not be working there another year, believe me. If anyone is interested in working for this company I strongly suggest you try to find an alternative work place.

Dillards is the most unprofessional, inept, unscrupulous company I have ever dealt with. My dad bought some china from the store for our wedding. We returned the $1000 china and they sent us a gift card for $269. We thought that maybe my dad bought it on clearance when my sister and her husband (who got married at the same time) returned their china and received $269. After talking with my dad, we found out that they still owed us $731. We immediately got a hold of them and have been told one lie after another as to why we haven't received the rest of our money. They have passed the buck onto different employees and no one can give us a straight answer. We finally got them to admit that they still owed us $731. They said they would send a gift card right away. They did. But it was only for $323. We are still wondering what happened our other $400. They have avoided our calls, sent us on a wild goose chase, and have refused to admit that they still owe us money. We are contemplating filing a lawsuit with small claims court. I am astonished that such a big business can get away with such blatant, dishonest, unethical behavior. I will forever tell everyone I know to NEVER support this crooked corporation.

Dillards is the last place you ever want to work. The stores upper management is horrible. They set people up to fail and don't have a clue how to manage a store. The expectations for employees as well as their sales managers is horrible and unrealistic. I don't recommend ever working for a Dillards store. They have no compassion for anyone and they do discriminate against those with higher education. One store in the midwest has clicks, the in group, and if you are not in the group you are ganged up on, sabatoged, slandered and run out of the store.

I work for Dillard's and the only thing that would make Dillard's a better place to work for is getting rid of the sales per hour, that causes greed, jealous, meaniness, and so much more. They want you to wait on customers and give good customer service but how can you, when you have in the back of your mind that you have to meet sale goals, they would be so much better off in everyway if that got rid of that. Start the people out at 8.50 or so, tell them to work hard and they would get a raise in 90 days and one at the end of the year, it wouldn't have to be much a lot just enough to show that they cared, anyway one of the employees could work in the stock room if need be and the other one could help customers without fear of needing a sale to make their goal. I have but one suggestion, if there are any Christians out there anyone, pray pray very hard for the Dillard families that God will change them and use them for His benefit, I love retail so the part of working in retail makes me happy but having this over my head really gets to me, I work for the Lord not for Dillards, but Dillards could be a wonderful place to work if they did away with that. love to you all Angel

What's happening to the quality of their clothes? You used to be able to get some nice quality things there now alot of the clothes in the children's section are starting to look (and are priced) cheap!

How incompetent can management be before they wake up and decide to do something about it? Some employees get away with "murder", they bully other employees (the really hard-working ones). The store is run like a madhouse. The managers hide themselves in their offices, looking and computer screens (who knows what they're doing?the schedules are barely done on time.. the inventory is a disaster.. ).. Hello!! walk aroud, see who's working, who's cleaning up after his/her customers and who's not.. WORK! it's amazing what difference that'll make.. in the meantime, a kind word of appreciation never hurts. try it! you freakin' Grinches!!! I hate you for subjecting your loyal over-worked, under-paid, unappreciated employees. Turnover is not the way to minimize your costs

If I hadn't experience all the bullsh*t firsthand while working for a few short months at Dillard's I never would've imagined such a horrible working enviroment existed. Of course there are always gonna be times that we feel frustrated with our job, but hardly anything will ever compared to the dreadful working enviromnent at Dillard's, EVER. I gotta admit, I fought for dear life there. I'm a very short-tempered gal and I usually don't take crap from anybody. So obviously the claws came out(specially mine),and of course that was part of my downfall, besides the obvious crap that happens there. First: I stood up for myself, Second: I stood up for myself to the area sales manager, Third: she didn't like the fact that I stood up for myself to her, so...she bullied me and pressured me and made it even more of a miserable hell at work, that I had no other choice but to quit. yeah it's that bad, but I'm glad that all over with. P.S.- What the hell is that all about the employee discount?, isn't it obvious that as soon as you're employed, you automatically qualified for it,right??, well not at Dillard's, first you gotta apply for it, then wait god knows how long for your Dillard's card to arrive on the mail. Meanwhile if you wanna buy workclothes from the place you WORK FOR, you must pay full price

I work for dillard's (shh, don't tell anybody) and to be honest, i hate like hell that i need this job right now. there are ASM's at my store that give merchandise away and prance around my department and tell me what to do...which i think is a joke because they're pompous morons. I'm really lucky to work with the only decent manager in the store. I work with a few older people that work harder than most people my age ever have or ever will and yet, every six months, they're subject to some bull crap pay cut. we try to do our jobs and treat our customers right, but who wants to do anything at all for a company that only cares about money and to be honest, has no idea how to run a retail business? we get way too much stock on items that are over-priced and don't sell. our sales goals are completely unreasonable. i feel sick that i work for a company that gets away with treating people like dirt.... a company that uses it's employees for all they're worth until they can't take it any more. i work with an 80 year-old woman who works damn harder than anyone in the store, has been there 20 years and yet...heh, makes less money than i do. my pay cut is coming up this week. thanks a lot, dillard's. i'm gone!

As the prior comment noted, I'm also a bit surprised at the negative comments regarding Dillard's (primarily concerning work rather than buying), as my experiences as a shopper in the Southern stores have almost always been positive. For starters, the stores (at least used to) carry narrow sizes in men's shoes. Dillard's was the only major department store that did this. (I wish they would return to this policy if chainwide.) Second, Dillard's has excellent sales prices, especially off-season. Third, the Dillard's in my area are usually cleaner and better laid-out than other department stores. Finally, the chain does carry the same labels (eg Polo) as its major competitors (eg Macy's), but has a local (if not national) monopoly on the Daniel Cremieux line (which is one of my favorites du jour).

Gosh, I am surprised to read so many bad reviews about working and shopping with Dillards.....I worked part -time with Dillards in Columbia, SC....For me, the work was fun, my supervisor and manager were great...I loved my job there! The only reason I left was because I retired from my State job and went to Myrtle Beach, SC for 7 years. Now that I am retired, I shop at all Dillards I see in the Southeast....have always been treated with the greatest respect....Sales Associates go beyond the call of duty to ensure you are happy with your purchase. Oh, I know all about the quota we all had to make....and I made it! The quality of clothes, (I always worked in the Ladies Depatment) a smile and a caring sales associate is all it takes.....I know that I represented Dillards in a positive manner and know the Managerment staff with Dillards are there to help and support each Sales Associate. We were taught, and we did, treat each shopper as guest in the Our Store! Caroline in South Carolina

As a current employee of Dillard's, I agree that it is one of the worst places to work. In fact, it has to be the worst part-time job that I have ever had. I was excited to begin part-time work while in school, but as soon as I began working at Dillard's I experienced the worst working environment imaginable. Dillard's treats there employees like crap. There policy is to cut associate's pay for not reaching ridiculous sales per hour goals. And they still expect associates to open stock, do sales markdowns, and so forth. Management is a poor excuse for management. They have no people skills, they are unprofessional, and they talk to employees as if they are nobodies. I don't understand how a company with such evil practices can continue to thrive. The culture of the company is terrible and morale is low. Employee relations are the worst mainly due to the forced competetion due to unreachable sales goals. THE COMPANY COULD CARE LESS ABOUT ALL OF THIS BECAUSE THERE IS ALWAYS SOME POOR SUCKER WAITING TO REPLACE THE EMPLOYEES WHO CAN'T TAKE ANYMORE AND QUIT!

This was the worst company that I have ever worked for. The management was as unprofessional and incompetant as it gets. I could go on about countless stories of unbelievable unprofessional conduct, ridiculous policies, and ineffective sales techniques. Take it from someone who worked there - I know that these people wouldn't send flowers to your funeral if you died. They treat their employees like crap. HORRIBLE benefits - health insurance is the worst I have ever had. They are deluded into thinking that they could compare to Macy's or anything else. I can't wait for them to go out of business....trust me, they will...no on can go on treating people this way. The only people who work for them are people who are seduced by their hiring rate or desperate. Anyone with retail experience can see within a couple of months that they are headed for disaster...... I could go on for days..... DON'T EVER WORK THERE!
