I have of $4,500 tied up in JC Penny furniture. So far, after 7 weeks, all I have to show for it is six dining chairs. THIRD attempt at delivery of 4 pc entertainment center, table, china cabinet. THIRD time EVERY piece was damaged. I am amazed at my bad luck. Customer service clerk ask "what have they offered you for your trouble" ANSWER: Not a darn thing! I have never seen such absmal (sp) service and merchandise. I'm getting a REFUND! Who needs this! Mary Kellogg Tacoma, WA

JC Penney's web site has atrocious shipping problems and uses deceptive order/billing and shipping practices. Furthermore, it does not allow the consumer to know which shipping carrier is being used until AFTER the purchase is complete. On 12/17 I placed an order and chose "Standard Shipping - $20.95" because I was promised Christmas Delivery if I used that option. "Order by December 19th, 2005 and use our standard home or store delivery service for in-stock items delivered within the continental United States." I was charged the $20.95 for Standard Shipping AND $15.75 for tax on the mdse, as well as tax on the shipping: All items in my $200 order were In-Stock. What JC Penney did was use FED EX HOME DELIVERY! That is even worse than FedEx Ground, if that is possible. Fed Ex ruined it's smooth running operation when it broke up into separate "companies" a la Fed Ex Ground and Fed Ex Home Delivery. These are now separate entities. I discovered that when I made the mistake of using FedEx Ground a year ago and a three-day delivery took 18 days. And FedEx explained to me they were no affiliated with Ground, it was a separate company and to take my problem to Ground. I never used it again. I ALWAYS GO BROWN. The package has STILL NOT arrived AND FedEx Home Del does not return to work until Wed 12/28. IF and WHEN this package with #200 worth of Christmas gifts ever arrives, Christmas is over. I knew better than to trust the failing JC Penney but because the web site and phone support I called to confirm my web order both promised delivery by Christmas - I mistakenly trusted their word. It was advertised all over the web site and in emails to me, the consumer. JC Penney does not allow you to choose your shipper and they state on the web site and on each other that they use UPS, USPS, FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery. The customer is not allowed to choose which shipper, unless you want overnight, of course. What they do is trick you into ordering/lie about which method your order will be shipped. Because JC Penney promised delivery by Christmas if I chose the $20.95 Standard Shipping method it never occurred to me I was being mislead or that they would use the fake-Fed Ex Home Delivery. I will never shop JC Penney again.

Overall I haven't had too much trouble with their merchandise and I've spent quite a bit in their store here. Just recently though I bought two pair of Levi shorts that looked stonewashed. My older boys ripped in two-three weeks, my younger boys ripped 9 weeks later in the same spot. I mean big rips along the inside seam. I figure bad material or something since I bought them at the same time. Same batch? Either way I put off taking them back because I figured they would give me a hassle so my mom took them back without my permission and without my receipt and received a giftcard for 5.83!!! I got them on sale, yes, but I spent $40 on them originally! I called immediately and told them to hold on to my shorts because I will come in with the receipt. We'll see what happens. My rating could go up. The sales girl did make mention to my mother about it looking like they caught it on something, which pee'd me off. Also about some people having shoplifted some stuff in there. What did that mean? Maybe we should have a little chat!

I have had an ongoing issue with their credit department and have had to call several times. Each time I am told it will be taken care of and each time it is not. I hate the fact that I am calling someone in India who does not seem to understand what kind of problems they are causing me. I want to talk to an AMERICAN!!!!!!! Very frustrated.
marymoe 07/05/2005
company has outsourced american jobs to india, whose customer service either doesn't understand or doesn't have access to correct account info. company has owed me $$ for several months now because of csr mistake! we should make an effort to support businesses that hire our citizens, since they profit from our business and tax laws!! just trying to avoid paying a living wage.

Avoid actually going into the stores (unless you'd like to slobber over the occasional gorgeous cashier), and stick with the catalog (print, NOT the online version). The selection is far better, ordering via phone is a snap (as their personnel are quite well-trained and helpful), pick-up and returns are a breeze, and the build quality of most everything they carry is high. They're trying harder to gain more mainstream appeal, but it's rough to shed the old upper-middle-class image that took them decades to construct. Your wallet takes a hit, but you get what you pay for.

the only place my grandparents shopped for many years so i can bet all my birthday and christmas and just cuz the love me presents came from jcpenney and you know what i loved every one of them. sometimes their taste in clothes was a little off but i always appreciated whatever they did for me.

Try the JC Penney Catalog Outlet store. I work there, and have customers who lay down 3 or 4 shirts and a pair of pants, and only pay $20-$25. That happens alot! The 25% off days are great too. I bought 3 black leather couches for $550! They're beautiful!
jade9z9 01/17/2005
Their policy of returns without reciepts is to go with the lowest price within ten days. This goes directly against MR. Penney's original mission statement of the Golden Rule. There will be no exceptions and expect to be treated rudely.

Yeah Willie A, what's up with people hating JCPenny. I plan on catching their after Thanksgiving sale. Come on people!

I think the JCPenney stores in Michigan are very nice. I don't understand why so many people on this page don't like it. Plus they always have nice sales every week. Make sure to catch their early bird specials.
startheart 10/21/2004
Very boring merchandise and they seem stingy with keeping up the stores. They only have two stores in the KC metro now. What's up with that?
Mr Evangel 10/06/2004
I always get my close there. Good stuff. Customer service needs to improve.

I love shopping here for jeans! They have juniors petite length jeans for around thirty dollars. I take a 3 short, and it's hard to find jeans in that size the don't cost me an arm and a leg! The quality is just as good, if not better than higher priced brands! But I don't like shopping for shirts at JC Penney! They are so thin and cheap quality! I've bought a few of their shirts and they all fell apart within a few weeks!
aero43 04/01/2004
Some stuff is ok but its hard to find right sizes try to avoid this store if at all possible
LynnP 01/05/2004
They are overpriced and they do not carry small sized jeans for teens. Also out source phone calling work to India taking away jobs from the U.S. I will not shop there at all and have closed my account with them. I will be shopping at Sears and Kohl's from now on!!

I am a current worker of JC Penney and have been for 3 years. It is the most horrible place to work. The customers that enter the store are horrific and rude. And the management bends over backwards to help those customers that harrass and return items that shouldn't be returned. In the end, JC Penney will put itself out of business because of it's poor managment and overstock of returns. Bankrpcy is approaching!!!!!!!!!!
KMGuru 12/04/2003
Watch for Sales. You can always pick up a good bargain. Great men's clothing.
kolby1973 11/28/2003
I do appreciate the fact that JCPenney has been around a long time, but all good things must come to an end eventually...and JCPenney is one of those stores that need to pack up and say goodbye. Boring, and the clothes are usually at least 3 seasons old by the time JCPenney puts them out...almost as bad as Old Navy....
India-Ink21 11/28/2003
Too expensive?? What do you live under a rock? Penny's has great sales EVERY week. The quality is pretty good. The store is clean & orderly.
denver72 11/19/2003
I like JCP, especially thier Home department. They have great sales, selection and quality.
scarletfeather 10/21/2003
Penney's has a great product line and they have great sales. However, I worked for Penney's this summer and found it to be a less than pleasant experience. The pay is very low and they treat their employees like dirt. No wonder they have %80 turnover.

Nothing special here but I've bought more than my fair share of jeans and stuff from there since I was a kid. I very rarely go in there any more but it ain't a bad place really.
Rick18 05/22/2003
Great catalog shopping...have used the JCP catalog more than the store...have bought everything from furniture to bedding to clothing and have never had a problem with an order...and have had to return over the years and the experience has been great.
ChunkyLover53 02/10/2003
I'm surprised to see JC Penney so far down the list. I think they have great selections, especially in children's clothing. The prices are usually reasonable. The employees are often very helpful. I think it is a nice, clean, friendly atmosphere.
BIGBABY 02/02/2003
I like JCPenney. When shopping in a deptartment store, JCP has to be the best. They have very good quality products, and costumer prices. Their ALWAYS having sales!
Snoopy 01/28/2003
I often shop at JC Penney and I think they have decent selections of clothes and stuff. The prices are pretty reasonable too. Customer service could be a little better though. There have been quite a few times when I have needed assistance and I either couldn't find any employees or they were just plain rude and unhelpful.
mikeholly93 01/13/2003
TOO EXPENSIVE!!! TOO FEW ITEMS!!!
lukskywlkr. 12/18/2002
Penney's is getting better all the time. They are having many more sales than they used to, and they aren't so high on their clothes. One thing keeps them from being five stars. Whenever they have any kind of sale, certain things are always inelligible for discounts (Levi's jeans for instance). I know for a fact that Mervyns doesn't exclude Levi's from their sales, which is why I spend more money there than I do at Penneys.
Springsteen80s baby 11/25/2001
JCPenney is not bad at all! I work there, and everyone (save for a few of those obnoxious teeneyboppers they just hired for the holidays) is really friendly and helpful. There are a lot of older people who love the clothes in the women's dept., younger people (like me) who can find nice bargains in the misses and juniors depts., and they have great purses, coats, baby clothes, and sheets and towels, too! I know I sound biased because I work there, but the key to our store's success is, in addition to selling the basics, we make customer service our top priority. And we have a catalog, too, so if you want something we don't sell, or if we just don't have your size or color, we can order it for you. We actually play tolerable music (boots associate morale!), and we do gift wrapping at an affordable price! I don't mean to sound like an advertisement! But JCPenney is really a nice store! Give us a chance, people!
