Macy's
1
I'm a Macy's sales associate in Texas, and just today I seriously have considered quitting.
I may have only been there for five (grueling) months, but just reading this has helped me make my decision.
I could go on all night about how bad it is, but here are the issues at my store:
--Ineffective, disorganized, and lazy management. There seem to be more managers than employees. So when you make a mistake, you have an endless parade of management appearing telling you that you did something wrong. When you need their assistance (in any capacity), no one is around. Or they can be found talking to their friends on their phones. They do whatever the customer wants no matter how ridiculous; this makes me end up looking like a bitch when all I'm doing is enforcing their supposed store policies.
--No raise has ever been offered, no matter how hard I work. I have a college degree and was hoping for advancement, but after I was hired they pretty much made it clear they plan on keeping me at $8/hr. for as long as I live. HR showed no interest in helping me form an actual career plan.
--The job description for a sales associate is a lie. They told me they desperately wanted a "salesman" to move merchandise off the floor and pay attention to customers. They also wanted me to open new accounts. What they really wanted was the equivalent of cheap slave labor to paper-fold their never ending piles of sweaters and basically act as a merchandiser or jack-of-all-trades (w/o the extra pay of course).
--Hours are ridiculous and understaffing leads to way too many responsibilities for one person. Recovery piles up, and to echo another posting: yes, we are locked in the store at night until the store is up to standard. 9:15 PM can easily become 10:00 or even more during the holidays. This of course also has a lot to do with customers, who seem to enjoy taking in a pile of 25 jeans and leaving them scattered all over a fitting room.
--The attendance policy is draconian and counterproductive. Even the best sales associate is not allowed more than 2 missed days a month for ANY reason. "Tardies" count towards this. So whether you're stuck in traffic, broke your leg, or your mother died, they count it all against you and will waste no time writing you up. So theoretically, if you are running more than half an hour late, you may as well take the day off b/c you've already missed "a day". There is no incentive to go to work, except the paltry wage, I guess.
--Throw in a dash of corporate greed, a general lack of sincerity on the part of the managers, and a whole lot of favoritism and mind games, you have a typical day at work. What the hell am I still doing there?
