Headgaskets failed at 75,000 mi on my 1995 Windstar. Ford failed to pickup entire repair bill. The 3.8L V-6 engine has a known design defect but Ford refuses to acknowledge this fact. I have owned a Ford continously since 1951 but will never own another. I want my $23,600.00 back on this LEMON, LEMON, LEMON. Ford public relations, are you listening to this?

First I was charged for a headgasket replacement, then they told me I needed a new engine. They ONLY charged me $500.00 for the head gasket job. The new engine took the bill to $3900.00!!!!!! Ford new about this issue. They are not standing behind their products.

I am one of many victims of the headgasket failure which Ford refuses to take responsibility for. My headgasket failed at 72,000 and cost me $890 to repair. Ford offers no assistance for a defect they designed into the vehicle.

I hate the Windstar. We have had a blown head gasket and transmission problems in the first 4 years of ownership. Also numerous other small problems. I will never buy another Ford let alone a Windstar. Ford has no concern for the consumer. Their customer service is worse than terrible. I would rate this van worse than terrible also. I would give it 0 stars if possible.!
rbos4304rg 02/18/2000
Until Head Gasket and transmission trouble in 95 model are properly backed by Ford, I don't think this model even deserves one star. The first and last Ford I will ever own.

The rating would be good before we replaced the head gaskets and engine for $3000.

I have a 1996 Ford Windstar that just blew the head gaskets at 80,000 (5,000 over my extended warranty!!) while being serviced at the local Ford dealer for another unrelated problem. Of course, they had no idea how this happened and deny everything. So I brought my broken van home and got it repaired at a local independent shop as the general manager of the local Ford dealership was thumbing his nose at me. The van drives great and is safe and roomy, but Ford has treated its customers very poorly and therefore everyone I know will be informed of Ford's customer service and reputation in standing behind their products. This was my first and last Ford product. Good luck Ford on handing out all of those new PC's...i hope your employees log into www.fordwindstar.com and check your products out!

My 1995 windstar failed its auto transmission at 35K miles and failed head gasket and engine at 77,000. $4000.00 engine repair for which Ford paid for "some".

Failure of head gasket
smak4268om 02/16/2000
We purchased this Ford Windstar, and although we like it, it has given us trouble starting, but not limited to the head gasket. It is disturbing to know that our friends, or aquaintences who have owned 95 windstars also are having head gasket, and little electronic sensor problems. This van needed to have been modified before, or the extended warranty extended to 5 years, and 120,000 miles. The reason that I say 120,000 miles, is because in the service manual, the only thing suggested as far as maintenance on the van is regualr oil changes. So how can a head gasket that goes out at 75,000 or so miles, be considered regular mainantence?? We are stuck with the van now because the problem is known, and people don't want to touch our van, even though we have replaced the head gasket already.
amra4266om 02/16/2000
Have owned a 1995 Ford Windstar since 1996. Have had to replace the transmission due to a faulty part (forward clutch piston) and replace head gasket due to manufacture defects. Ford is unwilling to take any responsibility for the repairs and has left us with the bill. Both are not reg. maintenence items and should last the life of the vehicle (according to Ford). We phoned Ford many times to plea our case just to get something like, "Ford stands behind all of their products, but because your warranty has expired, there is nothing we can do." All in all, we have put almost $3000.00 into this pile of @#$%, but we cannot afford a new one. Also, the dealers do not want any 1995's because of all the problems....so we are stuck!! Don't buy a Windstar...looks like the Honda is the way to go!!

Blew a Headgasket at 74000 miles. Fought with Ford for 8 months. Finally received some reimbursement although not even close to repair amount. Sold the van at a loss. Will never buy another Ford, just because of lack of caring or customer service.
occm4262om 02/16/2000
The Windstar drives great - until the Head Gasket explodes and trashes most everything under the hood. Be ready to hand out at least $1500 for repairs - and there is no help from Ford.
loco4261om 02/16/2000
Defective design in the engine results in blown head gaskets. Ford will not stand by its product. Windstar is comfortable and roomy, and good as a family van, but just has too many costly repairs associated with it.
ark@4259et 02/16/2000
Windstar 1995 - Great room for kids/cargo, safe feeling and nice handling, BUT what will go next?!. Had major break overhaul, headgasket last month at 2000Kms over special warranty - only offered 50% of repair by Ford "cutomer assistance".Ha! on a first name basis with "customer frustration center". Cruise just went, wind-shield fluid sensor always stays on, door mouldings coming loose, etc,etc...See 'ya in small claims Melissa, Michael, David, John....!

My 1995 Ford Windstar had the head gaskets replaced twice. The Ford Motor Co.was not very helpful in this matter.Fords' Customer Service people are very rude and give you the run-a-round.

I have a 1995 Ford Windstar. We have h ad nothing but problems. First, was the brakes, which make a thumping sound when applied. That has never been fixed. We've had the tie rods changed. Recently, we have had a blown head gasket, which Ford admits that they installed faulty head gaskets, however since we were 3,000 miles over our warranty they refused to pay for the repairs. Ugh, I will never buy another Ford and recommend to all my friends and acqaintances that they do likewise.

Major engine work had to be performed at 85,000 miles due to a defective head gasket!!! $2000 down the drain and the Van isn't even paid off yet!
jame4253om 02/16/2000
It rides great, but mechanically it's awful. I've been through 3 transmissions, a flywheel and 2 head gaskets in 90K miles.

This van has been expensive to maintain -- received no support from Ford. Will never buy Ford again!
jege4251et 02/16/2000
We only had 27,000 miles on our 1995 Windstar GL Minivan when we had to have the headgaskets replaced. That was after spending $500 to do radiator repair work which was misdiagnosed by a local garage after the first Ford dealership didn't diagnose the headgaskets (or denied it).
jame4249et 02/16/2000
Overall I am pleased with my 1995 Windstar except the following: Transmission went out, replaced my cost Head gaskets failed, replaced my cost Nuisance items: door locks, power windows quite working within first three years, replaced my cost.
Ange4247om 02/16/2000
I LOVE the way it drives and rides. I LOVE the big, safe feeling.I Love the interior roominess. I HATE the ENGINE! We discovered our HEAD GASKETS were leaking at 62,000 miles. Too expensive to maintain!
chri4246om 02/16/2000
$350 to "wipe dirt off a sensor", $1300 to replace blown head gaskets (known to be defective). Ford's service is about as pathetic as one can imagine. Further, they could care less about keeping customers happy.
pswa4244et 02/16/2000
Head gasket failure at 70K miles. Engine failure at 70.5K miles. Electrical problems. Hints of transmission problems. Stay away from this lemon!
armi4242et 02/16/2000
Simply put, this van bites. Never have I had to deal with a major mfr. that was so terrible! Telling me that because I was slightly over the ext. warranty period on the head gasket issue, so I longer qualified for reimbursement. A problem I feel is not a warranty issue but a major defect in the vehicle. Instead of accepting responsibility and recalling the van, they do this warranty thing which only shows more that they have a major goof, NOT that they are being customer-service oriented. Thank God for my Toyota Echo. To think their new vehicle is called a Focus! Ha! FOCUS ON THIS FORD!

Windstar is subject to extremely expensive engine repair--premature failure of head gaskets.

four4234et 02/15/2000
I am very disappointed with Fords customer service! They kept valuable information from the owners of WINDSTARS and then refused to recall or fix a defect that they knew about!
libe4233om 02/15/2000
Purchased this van new from dealer in 1995 for $20,000. Intake gasket blew at 14,000 and engine failed at 42,000. Transmission failed at 80,000 and traded it with 87,000 and recived $5,600 trade in as Ford rebuilt engine with 45,000 miles was starting to knock. Ford's response to my problems convinced me that my business was not appreciated. This is my last Ford.
mbal4232om 02/15/2000
We also had to replace the transmission, head gaskets, many sensors, and a bunch of minor repairs. I must agree with just about everyone else on Ford's lack of concern. The way I see it if they knew the was a problem with both the head gaskets and transmissions the should fix everyone's van! Not just the few who made in under 60,000 miles. It's almost as if they knew they would hold out untill at least 60,001 miles. Never again will I buy a Ford nor will any of my family.

FORD WINDSTAR VANS ARE BEST SUITED FOR RECYCLING FOR SHEETMETAL FOR DOG OR CHICKEN HOUSES. FORD MOTOR CO. COULD CARE LESS ABOUT IT'S CUSTOMERS, THEY HAVE JUST LOST A 20+ YEAR CUSTOMER!!!!
ltbu4225om 02/15/2000
I think that FORD MOTOR CO. needs to do the right thing and pay for the problem that the 3.8liter engine has, which 80% of these engines are in the 95 Ford Windstar. I wish and hope that FORD MOTOR CO. will admit to the problem and pay for it!
MIKI4224OM 02/15/2000
I've had two headgaskets replaced on my 1995 Windstar. The first was replaced under warrenty and the second cost me $3,200. Last Ford product I purchase unless Ford shows some back bone and helps their customers by covering the cost.
effa4223om 02/15/2000
Ford should make good on their faulty head gaskets in this vehicle by paying for 100% of repairs. Their response to this problem is inadequate and does not reflect a "Quality is job #1" attitude.
MrsY4222om 02/15/2000
Bought a 1995 Windstar, brand new, from Dealer. Replaced transmission at 67,000 miles, only three years old but warranty up. Replaced head gaskets 11/99 at 84,000 miles. Power windows and locks failed or failing. Replaced brakes and starter, ALREADY! I have never been so disappointed in a vehicle, EVER! Unfortunately, it is now paid for, and I can not afford to get a new vehicle at this time. Thought it would last longer then 5 years. We made a big mistake purchasing this vehicle and Ford is making a larger one by not paying for the defected materials put into this van.
jim.4219ov 02/15/2000
Its not just the headgaskets, its the transmissions too! Bought my 1995 Windstar new from dealer. At 35,000 miles the transmission was repaired--but that only lasted a few months. Thank god it was covered by warranty, because then what happened next was also covered. The fixed transmission had to be replaced by Ford at 43,000 miles. Then that second trasnmission lasted less than a year, and had to be replaced again by Ford at 53,000 miles. So then I'm driving around with my third transmission. CAN YOU SAY "DESIGN DEFECT?" They just burn and grind themselves out prematurely. OH--and heaven forbid I should forget--I HAD THE HEAD GASKETS BLOW at 61,000 miles TOO!! Of course the dealer salivated when offering to buy it from me at $3,000 under WHOLESALE book value in that condition, so I could buy another heap from FORD. No thanks Mr. Edsel.
cbh@4220om 02/15/2000
Very nice vehicle. Problems with the 3.8L engine make it a risk to purchase. Ford's inactive methods of handling recalls adds to the frustration for Windstar owners. As much as I like this vehicle, I would be wary about purchasing another one.
Duan4217om 02/15/2000
My 95 Windstar has 83,000 miles on it. The head gasket, timing chain cover gasket and radiator have gone bad. In addition my oil pan rusted through. This vehicle has been fully maintained. The worst part is that I can't sell it because all dealers avoid the Ford 4.3 engine and I'm just not the type of guy who would unload this van to an innocent person. I finally realized that this engine is going to die no matter what I do and am driving it until it goes. In the mean time I have to save up for another engine. I trust JASPER engines to build my next one right.
scot4218om 02/15/2000
I bought a used 95 windstar 2 years ago. Unfortunately I did not know about the history of the 95 windstar 3.8l engine. Within the last 2 years I have had the transmission rebuilt, the engine replaced, computer sensors blown, and several bad oxygen sensors. Ford has been virtually non responsive about problems with this car. Thankfully I bought the extended warrenty but one set of repairs took 75% of my vacation budget while I was on vacation in florida.
bsfu4216et 02/15/2000
The head gasket in the 3.8 liter engine is defective and Ford refuses to pay for the repair costs. They have acknowledged the defect but have failed to own up to fixing the problem. If you buy one or have one be prepared to dish out at least $1000 to have the repairs done.
alan4214om 02/15/2000
Will not buy another Ford after the sorrowful response by Ford to their Windstar head gasket catastophy. I MUST be able to trust that my manufacturer will stand behind any major defect such as this. I can tell you first hand Ford Motor Company is NOT a customer first manufacturer. Advice - Buy at your own risk or sell before the 3/36.
tlta4215om 02/15/2000
Had infamous head gasket failure. No help from dealer or Ford. Caused main bearings to go bad, over $2000 in repairs. Will never buy a Ford mini van again. Large number of head gasket failures with 3.8L engine
rons4213et 02/15/2000
Ford needs to fix this head gasket problem and do right by all the consumers who believed in their product.

My 1995 windstar blew a head gasket at 67000 threw a rod at 68000. Have had no assistance at all with Ford. Their customer service is SERIOUSLY LACKING! I will NEVER buy another Ford product and I am telling others I know not to do the same. We are still pursuing Ford because they KNOW they have a faulty product and just don't care. we are in the process of trying to get rid of this extremely disappointing product!!!!

We actually love this van for many reason - drives great, comfort, appearance. But we HATE Ford Motor Co. for screwing its customers. We too are victims of the faulty head gasket at 74K. Replaced the entire engine. Ford did offer assistance and we only paid $1,450.00. It should have been $4,200.00. Most didn't get squat. Secret Warranties are a great way to handle a problem!
