Radio Shack 1

I work for this lame company and I agree with anyone who says that the pay scale is horrible. All of you people out there that say "Oh, well, you don't know how to sell if you don't make money.", are full of crap. I made money before Feb 07 when they changed the pay plan. Now, I make commission on batteries and accessories??? CRAP!!! I now have no motivation to sell a TV or any end item product. Our customers are all over the age of 95 and only come in looking for damn batteries....I want to give our CEO one hell of a piece of my mind. NEWB!!

The local employees are great but if you have to deal with customer service you will get the raw end of the deal.

I like Radio Shack. Whenever I have an electronic problem, I go and grab a kid at RS to help me out.

I have even called RS from home with a techie problem.

RadioShack (it's actually one word) really isn't that comparable with any other service, and while they don't even get close to CNNs list of top companies to work for, they provide a lot of use for someone looking for a random electronic device/part and probably give better service with cellphone activations than any of the cellphone stores.  If you have any problem with a product or a cellphone issue it can be nice to buy with them because with over 6,000 stores in the USA they are just far more convienient than anyone else period (comparitively, Best Buy has about 800 stores).
The problem is the wide variety of experiences one can have with each individual RadioShack store, and from working there, it seems like the company really struggles to keep inventory on even common items in stock, muchless organize all of the stores into doing, well, anything.  Really RadioShack tries to act like a 'mom and pop' store at a massive and corporate scale, and unfortunately the large profitability of the company doesn't show in most of their stores (some stores are pretty slick, but most are fairly subject to the zeal of the manager, who is basically the treated as the owner of the store without the profit of actually owning a store).  The employees are trained mostly in sales and very little in the products themselves.  RadioShack is also a bit manipulative in their employee management since they essentially pay fast food wages but act as if they are paying you more (probably typical of most companies).  A manager I once worked with actually told me once with a straight face: "I pay you (he paused a bit before he said 'a lot'). . . give you the opportunity to make a lot of 'potential' money, so you should work hard."  A lot of people probably complain about the low commission rate (Best Buy doesn't give commission to their floor people FYI) because of how much the idea of making commission is hyped bv the company.  Realistically, if you look at the numbers, unless you are quite good at selling (and if you are, you are wasting your time at RadioShack) and you have a naturally high selling store, the 'commission' is sparce and usually isn't enough pay to justify the often large expectations of a full-time associate.  To further their expectations, the dess code is very formal compared to other electronic stores, and when I work there I often am perplexed by how over dressed I am for a bottom market job where I spend most of the day catering to daft elderly.  Also, RadioShack has over 30,000 products (between the online store and the actual stores) and the sales associate is expected to be able to sell any of those.
To summarize: If you need a cable and don't want a 700% markup, shop online, but RadioShack is a good place to get cellphones and random electronics; especially if walking into giant Best Buy makes you dizzy.  The chance of anyone actually being able to help you with your electronic issues is random.  Working there is less miserable than working in fast food, but it pays the same and is a more demanding job.

As a Radio Shack employee of one year i have become more and more disatisfied with the company i work for. I would not recomend any one to purchase any product from Radio Shack. When i first started working there in January of 2006 the pay was fairly decent. We worked strctly on commision and incentives for cell phones. Since my year tenure, they have ajusted the pay plan three times, none of which to the benefit of the employee. As of now we no longer work on commision only pay. The employees works on a base salary, either 6.50 or 7.00 an hour, plus 2.75% on only Radio Shack products. It's not easy to sell a product over priced, which most Radio Shack products are. Come to find out, the reason for the pay cut involves the greed of the new CEO Julian Day. In Julian's contract it states that if the stock goes above 30 dollars per share he gets a whopping million dollar bonus. In summary Day is screwing his employees to make the company look more profitable. If you are looking for a job with R.S. prepared to make the same amount as a full timer at Mc Donalds. Please at all cost aviod this company. The products are not worth the money!

I worked at RadioShack for over 10 years-- over 8 as a store manager.  They truly are (now) an awful company to work for.  There are reasons why you get terrible service in there.  The employees and managers all have a right to be very pissed off.  You can read the others' complaints from the associate's perspective, so here are some from a manager's.  The company gave me no help with staffing my store.  They expected me to do all my own recruiting, hiring, and developing myself.  When I was supposed to do this during my 55-hour workweek I'm not sure. There was barely enough staff for me to cover the store and simply sell stuff, let alone go out and recruit.  "Oh, just talk to the people in your store."  You mean the helpless, rude, degrading 100-year-olds that are the only customers left?  Or the shoplifting crystal-meth addicts that prey on the fact that there's often 1 person working in the whole store?  Or the 18-year-old morons who have to be taught to say "thank you" to customers, and still don't comply?  I constantly had to take the brunt of the poor quality and high prices of the sub-standard crap that's sold there.  There's no point in becoming the slick salesman the company wants you to be, because anything you sell that way will be returned under their ridiculous return policy that begs people to abuse it.  We used to call ourselves "rent-a-shack" because any major sale you made would come back, usually after 30 days, but if the customer bitched enough and went over your head, they got to return it anyway-- in bad condition, missing instruction manuals and/or accessories, etc.  Anybody with a brain goes to Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Fry's Electronics, ANYWHERE BUT THIS PIECE-OF-CRAP-HAS-BEEN-STORE.  Why did I stay so long?  Everyone needs to pay the bills.  And I think we all know it wasn't always like that.  It's just gotten worse and worse over the years.

What you are about to read are all Facts about how bad Radio Shack treats there sales associates. The longer you work for this company the less you make ! Every year right before the holiday season Radio Shack cuts the sales associates pay. Associates are constantly harrased about cell phone sales. Ask the thousands of employees who have left Radio Shack and they will tell you how much better they are NOT working for the Shack any longer. Radio Shack likes to brainwash the new employees. A few years back there motto was "The best company in America to work for " Thats the biggest lie or shall i say joke of the century. All the losers in Texas care about is there millions of dollors they have in there stock options. They couldnt care less for the backbone of the company..the sales associate or there families. Another fact is the pay is so horrible that you cant live on your salery and if your married no way in the world can you support a family if your an associate.Thats why the bulk of the employess are students living at home with there parents,or someone retired just looking for a little pocket money. If the public really knew how bad the employee's are treated this company would be out of business. I would love to see a Union come into play and lets see what would happen then. Come on associates take what you deserve.

I went and bought a digtal camara....on 01-20-07 at about 2:00pm and the customer service there sucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sales man did'nt even pay attention to me, but I still went on and bought the camara....cuz wal-mart didn't have it...and I really wanted it. So then I take the camara home and take a few pics, and it seems to work fine but then later that night I tried to take a pic. it would just turn on and off.....so then I thought that it was the batteries and I change them....twice and it kept doing the same thing....so then today.....1-20-07 I took it back at around 1pm and the same sales guy took care of me asked me if he could help me, so I told him the problem...so then he told me if I had dropped it or what I did to it, so I told him I did nothing to it, so then he took the camara and did some experminting with it....and then he came back up to me and said that it was'nt working cuz I was using cheap batteries and I told him that I tried differnt brands and it did'nt work so he handed me I the camara back and told me to buy some better batteries so then I grabed the camara and I nocited that I was'nt my new camara...that it was the display camara not the one that I had bought....cuz the camara that I took in still had the protetive slip on the screen...so I told him that I it was'nt my new one and he said that was the best he could do....so I told him I wanted another new one in a box and he said he did'nt have one....so I told him I wanted my money back and he got mad and started asking me for my info. in a mean tone so then when he finished he threw the repciet on the counter and said that that a ck would be mailed to me in 2 wks. so then i said that "What it took me 2 min. to give u my money and it takes u 2wks!" and then he said it was company rules...so then I left the store very upset and mad! I will never ever shop at a RadioShack again...and I never refer them! It made me very mad that this sales person tried to cheat me out on my camara giving me a display....!!!!!!!!!!! I could'nt belive he tried to play that with me!!!!!!!!! This is such low customer service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

As a current Shack employee, i must say that the new pay plan for last year was horrible. We are basically making fast food wages now. The fact that the company reduces our commission during the busy time of the year infuriates me. I guarantee you they didnt reduce the pay for the higher-ups during that time. They are making a fortune on the backs of store employees.

I'm a former employee of "The Shack". My pay was commission-based and I guess it would be accurate to say that YOU generate your success at Radio Shack. Sure cell phones sells are great for instant cash (Spiffs), but if you learn what those things are in the parts drawer and you know how everything in the store works, you are the only source of info to the many, many, and I mean many people that have absolutely no idea how to use or maintain the electronics they spend all that money on. You show, them how to use it, how to make it better, and show them a better one if there is one. Radio Shack is the last "Mom and Pop" store out there! A good associate gives good care to the customers and they come back and they buy and they bring and send friends. You make commission, you sell "family plans", and you become the local "Electronic Physician", and the training was all hands on.

I work at the Shack right now as a part-timer. It's alright for a full-time student but when you look around and go to the stores where they one guy doing 50 cell phone sales in a month, its bull.

I work at a relatively slow location, and because of that I think that I should be given a higher base-pay than someone who works at a busy location. I mean, at least twice a week there are times where we have gotten no customers in the store for 3+ hours and we are just sitting on the floor watching 40 Year Old Virgin or Wedding Crashers.

I don't know about the never getting to sit down, or the Friday-night, saturday-morning meetings, but around here I'm sitting watching TV and getting paid for it at least 1/5 of the time I am there.

I'm currently working at the corp location in ft worth tx, pay and benefits are great and the new CEO's turn around plan looks like a charm. Sure it will be tough in the beginning stages but in a few months with the introduction of many new products, RS will revive. As for those employees and former employees complaining about low pay and sweatshop conditions... get a damn education(it worked for me, GI Bill paid for mine), you have nobody to blame but yourselves.

ok i am a radio shack employee of 1 year...i admit the product for the most part IS HORRIBLE the parts drawers most employees dont care to learn....but hey...when it comes down to it...its a result of poor management. managers must encourage their sales team to help customers w/ the parts drawers and low ticket items in general...i kno that i do it to hopefully convert it into a cell phone sale...hey i'm just being honest i have bills too. if the salesman is good enough most customers dont even realize that they are being pitched to (if the sales associate is good enough) but for the most part...EVERY ASSOCIATE I HAVE WORKED WITH...with maybe an exception of this one fat ass i worked with 'thinks customers first' i know its cheesy but we really do think customers first...i mean how do we expect to sell a damn phone unless u gain customer trust first. i try to develop a relationship with all my customers so i can have them return...if they dont need a cell phone that day hey when it is time for them to upgrade or get a phone for their son/daughter/father/mother they just might keep me in mind because i do make it a point to address every customers need and bend over backwards to do so...you dont see that kind of service at best buy (even tho i LOVE their products)

I am a musician, and also have education in electronics. That means I do most of my own repairs and build some of my own gear. In 1975, I bought a very expensive stereo system from Radio Shack, the speakers are in my living room right now, Optimus T 100s. The manager brought it to my house and set it up for me. He worked there for years, and knew the answer to any question I had. I have spent some big money at Radio Shack over the years. Once upon a time, I knew the managers in about 3 of the local radio shack stores. Those managers were at those stores for a long time. Now, I live in the boondocks, and am quite disabled, so driving is a chore for me. I call Radio Shack ahead of time to ask for components , and am always told " yeah, we have a few of those". I then hobble to my car, drive the half hour drive to the store, and hobble into the store to find out they don't have anything even remotely similar to what I asked for. If I cannot trust them to know about their small low dollar items, I sure as hell won't plunk down dollars for big pricey items. And, there are different guys working there every time I go there. Any time you shop at a place that has a constant turnover of help and the help that is there has very little knowlege of the product, it means the company is trying to get by on the backs of people it is not willing to pay reasonably. People just do not leave jobs where they are well paid and treated. I called Radio shack headquarters the last time I drove for an hour to come home empty handed. They apologized and sent me a 10 dollar thing of some kind, I think it is ten bucks off, I intend to use it for something that costs 10 bucks. And then I will never go to a radio shack again. It costs too much to drive now, it is cheaper and more reliable for me to get the stuff on ebay or internet stores. And, in my physical condition, driving that far lays me up for the rest of the day. So, I gotta make car trips account for something. It is far easier to order something on the internet and have someone bring it to my door, than to drive all over hell and come home empty handed. You get what you pay for. That cliche' also applies to employees. When wallmart starts selling potentiometers and resistors, dollar stores will be where radio shack stores squat now.

There is a place for Radio Shack and if you don't have a full service specialty electronics store in your city, then Radio Shack is the place to go. Would have to agree that the Shack has changed over the years (remember when the TRS was the only personal computer available to the masses?), but the general product knowledge level of Radio Shack employees is no worse than any of the other major chain stores. Yes, the prices are generally higher, but this is true of any small retailer who cannot complete on a volume basis.

I worked for Radio Shack managing several stores throughout my district for 15 years. I made a descent income for a single male with no kids . However, I worked 60+ hours a week to get the job done right in order to protect company assets and profit increasing my year end bonus. I've seen five different district managers come and go, each one offering additional stress to have sales gains every month. If you had one sales loss your were a negativly frowned upon. I understand the importance of business profits and loss and realize how important sales are. I always operated positive profits on my PNL. I made the company money, and was able to support myself for fifteen years. I found it was never good enough for the DM's. Selling extended warranties, long distance service, wireless , radio shack credit card financing, etc needed to have certain percentages every month. I had many months with great percentages in all areas , but some may have been a little low. I was always the bad guy. It was never what I did for them yesterday, it was what are you going to to for me today. I worked very hard and enjoyed selling and offered good customer service, but the District Managers were riding me every day adding much stress. I decided to open my own business which was an investment of only $5000 four years ago. I am a retail owner selling mostly imported gifts and home decor with 15 employees now. I thank Radio Shack to some extent for teaching me business operations. I make five times more than i did at Radio Shack, and work half as much. I was their slave for 15 years, making them lots of money, with nothing to show for. I now have 2 children , a beautiful wife and have lots of time for a normal social life. I dont have corporate people telling me im not doing a good enough job for them . I may not run sales gains every month from the previous year, but im operating a successful profitable business.

As a former RadioShack employee of only 5 months, I have to say that you people really need to give the employees a break. The tales of people making $15+/hr are few and far between. Many associates are stuck in crap locations where making $6/hr is considered a "good" day. I personally averaged about $5.75/hr even though I leaded in sales for much of my time in the store. The job begins to wear on you after you're forced to work upwards of 30 hours when you only signed up to be part time, my hours only decreased when I threatened to quit. You're not allowed to sit down even if you only get a customer every 2 hours, and during training and inventory (which took 4 days at my store), you're only paid $5.15/hr. The company simply doesn't look out for their employees. There's no pay increase for keyholders (the guys you see in the store late at night closing the store and counting money), who are forced to stay hours later when some asshole decides to call out, overtime pay means making a little over $6/hr, and regardless of how crappy a location you're in, you're still expected to push cell phones on 80 year old people who you know can't even see the buttons. When I first got to the company, I made no attempt to upsell or push items on people that they didn't want. But I'm a 20 year old college student, and $5.15 barely covered the gas I used to make it back and forth to work. As far as us being knowledgable, I'm a computer science student and I still knew close to nothing when I first started working there. After a month of intensely teaching myself, I was a true veteran, even so I occasionally would get a customer who had some obscure electronic setup from the 70's and would be pissed off at me for not knowing how to fix it. 1. We are not technicians, 2. We can't possibly know everything about every single item in the store, 3. We're treated like crap by the company and by the time you come in, we're probably just wondering about how to make ends meet. Just because you know everything. The job is simply infuriating, from the know-it-all customers who don't listen to you and end up buying and returning something they don't need (effectively taking money out of my pockets) to the customers who buy high ticket items only to return exactly 30 days later, unopened, the employees have every reason to buy surly, but most still greet you with a smile, which is more than I can say about many of the customers.

Honestly people. First off. (aside if you're getting a contract) use fake info if Shack employees ask for it. Second, go to any retailer and find a roaming employee and ask them for something. They will call the person who "specializes" in that section. Of course if you go there after 5:00, they won't be there, so you're SOL. RS has thousands of products (95% of that product the employees don't make d#ck for comission on), so just because they don't know exactly what you need, help them out. How big of a hurry to do nothing are you in to spend an extra few minutes in the store??? Patience a$$holes. Third, more times than not, the customer will ask a question like this " I need an adaptor to connect my mp3 to my audio system, do you have something that will work?" it's as bad as " I have a thing that needs a thing, you got it?" MORE SPECIFIC PLEASE!!!!!! 4. Rude customers will be treated rudely. 5. Most important. Not every store is the same. As you know, staff makes money on cell phones, and the stores that do a lot of phone sales are used to impulsive shoppers. Translation. They're gonna get phone sales and big sales throughout the day regardless so they don't care about "you." However there are many, many stores that aren't mall stores or high volume stores that have to make money from EVERY customer. Meaning those employees are going to do their best at helping the customer. As a RS employee, I know how tough it can be to get good paychecks, but if you help 30 customers a day selling 30 dollars of random things (correct things) it adds up, and throw in some random phone sales, paychecks ain't bad.

You know, it's all you goddamn complaining bastards that make ANY PLACE horrible to work at. Imagine for a second that THIS is what you had to deal with on a daily basis: 1. Stupid people. Every day...just stupid people...one more dumb than the last. Asking you for somthing, but they don't know what it is or what it's called, but get mad at you because you don't know either! Give me a goddamn break! I'm tired of dealing with dumbass customers. 2. All of you complaining bitch ass customers that say "it's too expensive", well guess what? I don't care! You are too poor or cheap to be in my store! How about you go to wal-mart instead and have fun with THEIR super knowledgeable staff! It's complaining assholes like you that are making products today so F'IN cheap! Your made that your product doesn't last more than 90 days!? THAT'S YOUR FAULT BECAUSE YOU WANTED THE CHEAPEST GOD DAMN PRICE YOU COULD FIND! Because of that every company in the world is looking for a way to cut a corner and make the cheapest piece of shit for cheap assholes like yourselfs! 3. You can't make EVERYONE HAPPY! Customers are either pissed because you don't walk up to them, or they're pissed because you asked them if they need any assistance! Well guess what? YOU CAN ALL GO F YOURSELFS! 4. Dumbasses that want to return something either after 30 days, without the box, or damaged because of mis-use! IF YOU HAVE DONE THIS IN THE PAST OR YOU DO THIS IN THE FUTURE...guess what? BURN IN HELL BECAUSE YOU WON'T GET A RETURN AT MY STORE! I don't know where you god damn customers get off trying to return a product for ANY reason after the stated return policy on the back of the sales slip. Every item I've ever returned in my life was within 30 days (usually within 3) because I know there is a LIMIT! Oh and guess what...I'm SMART enough to know that when you return an item to ANY store, it MUST be in the exact same condition it was in when I purchased it! Oh your stupid child broke their remote controled car you got them for christmas by driving it into water....well guess what? I DON'T CARE! This and MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH more is what EVERY RadioShack employee has to put with to every day, and that's just from the customers! We also have to deal with dumbasses in the ivory towers making DAILY changes to the processes that have been in place for years, for no other reason than THEY feel it will help! So in closing, for all of you people who are too dumb to even SHOP in an electronics store, NO matter if it's RadioShack or not! GO TO HELL AND DIE! Oh and a DOUBLE GO TO HELL AND DIE for all of the super F'IN nerd, dwebs, and spazes that come into RadioShack and complain about not having HAM, CB, or any type of small component parts in stock! THIS IS NOT A "FIX IT" WORLD ANYMORE! WAKE UP YOU F'IN DOUCHE BAGS, GET OUT OF YOUR MOMMIES BASEMENT AND TRY TO GET LAID!

Order was never delivered because of radioshack misprinitng address in shipping (FEDEX) label. Emailed them when I found FEDEX tracking status as "Incorrect Address Exception". Did not receive any reply. Called them and asked them to correct the address. The reply was that they wouldnt correct the address after shipping out and I need to wait for the items to be returned for the refund!.. It is been 11 days afetr the order. One of the 2 items in this order is already returned back to radio shack yesterday. But have not received any refund.(They charged each item in order as soon it was shipped). The other item is stuck some where with status "Delivery Exception" (as found at fedex tracking) since 8 days and neither being delivered or returned. I alreday wasted several hours talking/emailing both Radio shack and fedex support. No resolution yet. Radioshack customer support number is hard to reach and emails are never replied until you email multiple times. RadioShack failed to deliver this order. And they are expecting me to risk my money until they getback the item which they misplaced!. Now i am proceeding with dispute with my credit card & bank. This was my first purchase at radio shack.. never again would buy from there!

I purchased a DVD player with two valid rebate from their site(one with the original UPc and one with copy of UPC)Only to find out a week later they they will honor only one rebate with original UPC and not the other one. Now I am holding the product without the UPC because I submitted that for rebate. And I can not return it or if I did the return will be less for the amout of rebate which I may not even get it because I returned the product. So now I am out $129 and holding a product that is not worth the amount I paid for excluding the rebate amount. What a rubbish company to do business with who can not honor their own advertised offer to millions of customers.

Radio Shack advertised a personal DVD player with two "ONE-DAY only" rebates, December 23, 2005. Because the combination of rebates resulted in an exceptionally low price, many consumers called Radio Shack's Rebate Center to verify that the rebates were legitimate. After being told that both rebates would be honored, many people bought the DVD players and of course gave them as gifts. About a week later, Radio Shack cancelled the rebates and refused to honor the rebates, claiming the one rebate had EXPIRED (but they were both valid only December 23). ABC News in Philadelphia detailed the story of the company's refusal to honor its own offer; see http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=local&id= 3796403 After this story, in which RS offered to honor both rebates for customers who "can prove they called and got bad information", the company STILL refused to honor the rebates. They posted a false advertisement to lure customers into their stores 2 days before Christmas, lied to their own consumers about the validity of the rebates, and then lied to the media about their intention to make good on the deal. STAY AWAY!

oh yea!!! I've worked for Radio$hack for 4 years as a manager and hell yea, radioshack sucks. For the dude whose girlfriend, brother, sister, mother & father work at radioshack...and who claims they're all making $20/hr, I dunno what you do there, maybe you sell human parts but I've been best sales person in my district (consisting of 78 stores) over 15 times and I've barely made $20/hr. And you watch satellinte when your not busy instead of spotting-the-not and replenishing? What's your name so I can get you fired dumb ass!!!

My comment to jr22: As a former Radio Shack employee here is what I saw: 1. Sweat shop working conditions, i.e., you work a straight 12 hour day with nothing but a half-hour lunch break. They avoid labor laws requiring other breaks by keeping all their stores small, thus below a certain number of people. 2. A determined feministic agenda, i.e., girls are hired and favored over guys, females who have no electronics background whatsoever are being made store managers. I and the other new-hire guy had to do ALL the "lift, tug, tow" jobs while the cute little girls got to sell stuff to customers, thus making commissions while we literally sweated literally our b____s off! 3. Your claim of $15/hour is delusional Jr. That fact is you were paid at or below minimum wage as a base rate of pay, and the company would add on your commissions for the hour in which you sold a high-ticket item to make you think you were making more then you really were. You see, this is like the salesman who is working on commission only making a $1000 close in only an hour and claiming he made $1000/hour for that pay period, when in fact that may have been his only order for that period. If you ever get a true $15/hr job, with real benefits, you will someday know what I mean. You in fact did not make over $30,000/year with the Shack, which is what $15/hour adds up to. 4. "I owe my soul to the company store"-they have a spec dress code (which is only actually enforced on the guys) for which the company gives you a catalog to buy from. Of course it is taken out of your wages, and GUESS WHAT-you got no paycheck left after that and the cost of going to and from work. 5. "You belong to Radio Shack"-you have a required late Friday/early Saturday meeting-so when can you just say "f___ it", take off early Friday and come in Monday? They schedule your week so you get no more then one day off at a time, so you really have no time to "de-program", or pursue a hobby, etc. This is essentially the same as a commune-cult style existence. When I mentioned to the manager I needed to take my wife to the hospital for an exam and I needed a Wednesday off next month, she told me that she had already scheduled me for the next month and I could not take it off. 6. "I am a Radio Shack clone"-Essentially working for Radio Shack is like being in the military without the benefits-your family has to accommodate your schedule with them, not they accommodate yours. This is OK for certain younger working women with no children, college kids, young singles, others with no family or home life, but "Shack Forbid" if you have a spouse or a child in school, etc. 7. Radio Shack IS NOT a certified drug-free workplace. The fact is they require no drug screening whatsoever, and in fact one young man I worked with was a former USAF pilot, and obviously still doing the "go-no-go" pills to keep the "Shack-Pace". Now understand as long as make money for them, they benefit by looking the other way. 8. "Old Shackers Never Die, They Just Drop Off Into the Abyss". The fact is Radio Shack has no sick pay policy. So that means if you "can't cut it" for a period of time due to say a prolonged illness, and you don't show up, they simply allow you to fall from a full-time into a part-time status. That means you lose Social Security and Unemployment as well as company benefits. That is why you never see any truly long-term sales associates retiring after doing so many years. I mean if you can't cut the no-sit-down-break policy and can't maintain your full-time status by calling in sick-THEY DON'T WANT YOU! Remember, if you want to go to work for them, just leave your brain at home and nothing there will bother you.

Boy, if some of you complainers would actually say this particular RadioShack in so and so town is bad that would be fine, but to say all RadioShacks are bad because of one bad experiance at a particular RadioShack is just plain ignorant. The RadioShack (in Northeastern Wisconsin) by me is just plain the best place to go. These people will bend over backwards for you, won't give you a sales pitch, suggest other locations to compare at, are VERY knowledgable, if they don't know somthing they will do everything in there power to find out for you, and NEVER try to upsale you. If you say I want this, they'll say,"Well what are you trying to do?" and if your over buying something they'll let you know "hey you don't need that, it's too much this product will do perfectly and save yourself 20 bucks." If you use one RadioShack to rate all the others, you definetly need to go back to science class in middle school to re-learn how to research things.

Cheap imported junk, surly staff and management, unpleasant stores. Good for batteries and small electronic parts. Cannot understand why anyone would every buy equipment there. Why do they keep on asking about my cell phone service? Why do they keep asking for my address on a cash transaction? I know, they don't do that any more, but not because they wanted to stop...and it's still annoying.

They used to be the authority, but now they know nothing and overcharge for everything. A phone splitter that I get for ten cents from my wholesaler costs six bucks at Radio Shack! UPDATE: I used to take Radio Shack sales partner jobs for Dish Network and always had to re-explain EVERYTHING to the customer. The employees had zero knowlege of the promotions or equipment. I know because I checked one for my amusement. He proceeded to talk down to me like I didn't know a thing about Dish and got all pissy and told me to leave when I told him I was an installer. Hacks.

I think that Radio Shack is way too expensive, alot of their items you can find at Walmart for 1/2 the price. The only good thing is the store is so small you can find what you want and get in and out real fast. Plus the workers will usually help you find whatever you need. If you go to some other store and ask for help or information about an item their usually to busy to help you.

as a radioshack employee for almost 2 years i can say that a lot of things that are being said here are true, but some are just plain stupid. First, to the former employees who say that the pay at radioshack sucks..you must not be any good at selling anything so you probably shouldnt have been working there in the first place. I average about 15 dollars an hour and i work in a relatively small store that hasnt had a sales gain in over a year. My g/f works in another RS and she averages about 20 $/hr. My sister also works for RS and averages about 18 $/hr. so i dont know what you guys were doing but this is one of the best jobs. not to mention that hours can go by without a customer coming in and we have all the satellite channels to watch. :) Second, for the people that say that RS employees dont know anything....We have tons and tons of products in our stores and it is impossible to know everything about all of them..we take tons of certifications on several products but not all of them. from time to time someone may come into the store with a question i dont know but that doesnt mean i dont know anything...Unlike other stores, We dont have people specialized in one section only..we have to try and learn everything in the store...its not easy! but we will gladly look it up for you! Hey im glad to help any customer that is going to buy something from me. Third, to the people who hate being bugged when they go in a store...HELLO!!! its a store and the employees work on commission! If you worked at RS you would act the same way. We make our money by selling things but if u tell any person that u dont need help or dont want help im sure that person will understand and leave u alone...if not...ur opinion is justified. And last, for the people that dont like the return or exchange policy...what do u expect? Tell me one store that will exchange a 5 month old product that comes with a 90 day warranty? None! thats why the warranty says 90 days! and what store doesnt take forever with repairs? i went to best buy and dropped off a dvd player to be repaired and a month and a half later it was done. You are not the only person having their item repaired. its going to take some time. oh i forgot. not all RS employees are the same. Personally i try to figure out if the customer is trying to buy the correct item before i sell it to them. I have had a lot of people coming in trying to buy an s video cable because they said their dvd player wont work without it..i tell them that the yellow rca cable will work fine but that they dont have the tv in video mode. and when a customer comes in with a broken cell phone, the first thing i ask them is wether they have insurance or not. if they do all they have to do is pay the insurance company the deductible and not buy a cell phone from me....so dont judge all the RS employees by a few bad encounters youve had. we arent all the same. and last again..if u dont want to give out ur info....GIVE A FAKE NAME!!!! im sure they wont know the difference or wont care....thats just our job.

Whoa Slow down people, I happen to work at a radioshack, and retired at 30 years old, as the vice president of a large corporation. I have a Bachelors in Electronic Engineering. I love radioshack and so do many of the people I work with. As far as diversity women get abused by customers that think they do not know anything or make sexual ccomments, and usually quit because of the customer abuse. Ethnic wise we have a full mix of employees. I work at a store where yes most of the people I work with are 18 years old and yes they only make minimum wage so lay off they work damn hard for what they get paid and take more guff of employees than higher retail outlets, and companies. They have a pay for performance plan which if they sell cellular or sirius or dish's they get spiffs, that can double the paychecks so they ask you. I honestly do not know how some of them live paycheck to paycheck, I do it because I love tech and designing a device for customers that have not got a clue between rg6 and rg59, let alone buy a 5 thousand dollar HDTV and want a pair of rabbit ears for it. Money well spent. Be courteous and they will help the best they can, do research on radioshack.com first and if you can bring the product in so we can match up the correct ites for it.

Not the best place for big ticket items, but they (some stores anyway) have a great selection of circuits, fuses , capacitors , soldering tools and wiring piriphreals. Only tech geeks who tinker around with their electronics (like me) will find this store something better than 'average'.

I just started working at Radio Shack, June 2005. I might be consider the stupid employee as others have posted. You have to understand the no one is born with knowledge of all the items in Radio Shacks inventory. There are many things that I don't know, but there are loads reference materials that I refer to when I'm helping a customer. I have the customer look along with me. They usually appreciate the fact that I didn't just pretend to know what I talking and give them false information. Radio Shack does a great job training their employees. But it takes little time to be really knowledgeable.

RadioShack used to be a great store for the electronics enthusiast, but not anymore. They used to employ knowledgable associates, who could help you with your electronic problems. At my local RS, the manager looks to be about 18 years old, and the last couple of times that I was there, all that him and his associates wanted to do was pester me about cell phones, when all I came in for was a few parts (which they no longer have much of a selection of) The other posters are correct about them selling used and returnes stuff. It is regular practice for them. I was going to purchase a telephone recorder, but when the salesman brought it out of the back room to sell it to me, it was obvious that the box had been opened, and when I requested another one, they offered me a double warranty. I'm sorry, but I am not going to pay RadioShack's high retail price for an item, especially if it isn't new. Stay away! There are much better (and cheaper) places to buy your electonics that have better help and a better selection.

The worst electronics retailer period. Returned merchandise is simply dusted off and put right back up on the shelf. Buying previously returned merchandise does not entitle you to a discount. The warranty is a joke, as you bring something back and they fix it for you - which takes weeks, sometimes over a month. God forbid you just get an exchange. RCA products are the absolute bottom of the list. Pushy sales people force you to listen to a sales pitch on cellular or direct TV EVERY TIME. - Avoid at all costs.

I don't know what you're all going on about. Here in Canada you make okay money, plus you train a lot to get yourself ready for the position. Radio Shack employees are not idiots (okay, maybe the new people are. I know I was). I think you all need to just relax and visit a Canadian store or something. Maybe we have different guidelines there, but I greet every customer I see...

Gladiator sales techniques, survival of the fittest. Commissions on Cell Phones sales only, as other commissions only apply if your sales volume is impossibly high. So it's 5.75 /hr plus Verizon or Sprint. Oh, let's not forget the 25 sum odd courses you must pass to stay!

It looks as if Radio Shack has gone the way of too many companies in that volume sales has taken precedent over what a customer may actually need. There's nothing wrong with volume sales but very few companies seem to be able to promote things in volume and also remember their roots and the formula that enabled them to become big powerful companies. If I had to take a guess I would say that it was during the 1970s when CB radios were all the rage that Radio Shack tasted the fruits of high volume sales and began to leave it's roots, telling customers what they should buy instead of tailoring their merchandise to the customer's actual needs.I would be in favor of further expansion if they would pay more attention to the formula that got them where they are today. It's hard to believe that Radio Shack was the merging of a small Boston radio supply store with a leather and shoe repair company, and during the early days of hi fi they were one of the industry leaders and innovators. Personally, I have never had any problems with the personnel who work at Radio Shack and from my own experience I have no complaints. A few years back I worked for a gentleman who was employed by Tandy Corp in the early 1960s when the founders son was then the head of the company. When I asked him about Mr Tandy and what has become of Radio Shack he said something to the effect of Old man Tandy is spinning in his grave so fast he has his own gravitational pull. Volume sales look good on paper but satisfied customers (which equals repeat customers) are more profitable in the long run.

Radio Shack used to be such a great company. If you needed a part and couldn't find it locally, look in the RS catalog. Anymore, though, they don't carry nearly what they used to and the prices are extraordinarily high for what you get. The store itself seems to hire only salesmen who are there, true to nature, only to sell, regardless of whether they have a clue about what they are selling. I've visited 3 stores locally on several occassions over the past 5-10 years and have not once have I left happy with my experience there. Back when they still carried electrical components instead of RC cars and cheap casio keyboard knock-offs, I once applied to work there because I felt myself very knowledgable about their products and that I could be of great use to them. I actually walked out during the interview process because the interviewer was disappointed that I answered the question Would you ever lie to a customer if you didn't know about a particular feature but knew that you could make something up to get the sale?. My answer was heck no - I'd find the correct information for them. Apparently Radio Shack would have preferred that I had said that I would be willing to lie as long as I got the sale - looking up the correct information wastes company time. Oh my - how can you respect a company with that attitude? Stay far away from Radio Shack. And no - this isn't just a bitter shock statement ... that interview was 3-4 years ago, and that mentality has become more and more apparent to me each time I visit thier store.
