Now here's a guy I can enjoy watching on C-SPAN. He's a master of the filibuster and is syrupy-smooth in his dislike for compromise and what he views as "kowtowing" to anyone or anything that would threaten his beloved Pascagoula shipyard and its workers (his father was a pipefitter for the same shipyards). His honorable defense of his constituents and his unquenchable addiction to camera lenses are respectful, since there is nothing better than watching a consummate politician who is hopelessly out of touch with the rest of this diverse nation blather on and on about a 1.35 trillion dollar tax cut and how it will benefit all Americans (except the working poor, racial minorities, single parents and basically anyone Lott is not). His fellow senator, Thad Cochran, is much more humble and respectful of other ideas and opinions than Chester Trent Lott. Lott is a Mississippi good-ole-boy in a well-pressed Brooks Brothers suit. I would hate to think that the good people of the Magnolia State would send this condescending coiffured obstructionist to Congress, especially after this nation was represented by the likes of James O. Eastland, one of the most vicious racists and segregationists ever known to have graced the hallowed halls of the Senate. Jamie "Mumbles" Whitten wasn't much better, either. Talk about an ego streching from Meridian to Jackson and down to Pascagoula via Hattiesburg and Bay Saint Louis! Chester Trent Lott certainly is showing how the South will rise again. Remember, this guy used to be a Democrat up until 1972, when he declared he was going to fight the Kennedys and the Javitses and their ilk. Give him credit, he's been consistent in that area. But what has Chester accomplished in Congress, besides being Minority Leader of the Senate? He's got to work harder at doing some sort of constructive legislation with all people and not just be sucking down one mint julep after another. (Or would that be bourbon?)

MAJORITY LEADER TRENT LOTT HAS DONE A FINE JOB I WOULD LIKE FOR HIM TO INTRODUCE A BILL WHEREBY THE POLITICIANS THAT ARE LECETED BY THE PEOPLE REMAIN FAITHFUL TO THEIR PARTIES. THEY WILL REAP WHAT THEY SOW WHEN IT IS RE-ELECTION TIME. APPARENTLY THE REPUBLICANS PUT THE TURNCOAT IN OFFICE AND WILL ACCORDINGLY REMOVE HIM. WHATEVER HAPPENDED TO RECALL. COME GET THE TURNCOAT OUT NOW.
Proud Democrat 05/31/2001
Mr. Lott, you are a pitiful excuse for a human being. Just because you are no longer Majority Leader (praise the Lord), and the Republicans have lost control of the Senate, you plan to amend every piece of legislation to fit Mr. Bush's right-wing agenda. The majority of this country doesn't like Mr. Bush's agenda. Senator Jeffords left the GOP because of the sharp swing to the right. You are a warped, spiteful little man and hopefully, the people of Mississippi will wake up to see you as you really are, therefore, replacing you with a more reasonable, fair-minded individual. The Senate would be a better place without you.
A McDonald 05/30/2001
I think Mr. Lott should step down as Minority Leader. I do not feel he has lead and that he is more concerned about playing 'nice/nice' with the Dems instead of standing up to them. When you are on top, as the Republicans were, you have to fight to stay there instead of rolling over and coasting as I feel Mr. Lott did. Of course, Mr. Lott is not the only one to blame - I'd say many Republicans are equally to blame. They just weren't ready for leadership because they had been the underdog for so many years. They's lost their golden opportunity.
calculiador 05/25/2001
How does a guy like him get elected in the first place? The same way Jessie Helms and Thurmond and others like them get re-elected. The voters vote with their 150 years old memories, not with their brains.

Mississippi dirt farmer. Send the campaign payoff bill to the house or put a gun to your head and take care of business!

Trent Lott is indeed agreat American. A true patriot that puts the nation and it's time honored traditions above all. Sure it would be easier to show the white feather of cowardice in the face the "we diddled ourselves and it's your fault crowd." Not Trent, he is thunder-bolt while other politicians look like a midget breaking wind with a bic lighter! It's high time to restore the rule of absolute constitutional law and let the meet you by the mood swings goofy government die on the vine! Remove the mill stone of shiftless slack jawed losers from the American peoples' back and let pure freedom ring! Our creed is liberty not dreaming of a loser utopia. Restore the original Bill of Rights and let nature take it's obvious a just coarse! Chase the pointy head intellectuals out of our institutions for higher learning. They have failed the next generation and basterdized their mission. Restore the promise of work and reward! Expect citizenship from every man and woman, not just the ones who make a dollar more than you do. Chase the liberals from our courts, who remove the american ideas of swift and just punishment! Every generation of Americans own the right to shape our current government. We the people will not be shackled to the failed ideas of government worshippers. God bless Trent Lott and God bless Dixie! Randy R. Riddle

Mr. Lott wants to send a message to the U.N. but can't read the message being sent to the U.S. He needs to learn again how to work for something.....

I, too saw that program on T-V about the cockfighting and was sickened by what I saw....how barbaric can people be? And to take their kids there!!!Senator should be hung upside down for 3 days...see how he likes that, and that would be humane compared to what he allowing to happen....I cannot stand cruelty to animals....You could tell that one rooster had feelings because as soon as they laid him down, he got all limo, knowing what was going to happen.....SHAME on you Senator Lott...you are not human...
Hoppin' Mad 03/30/2001
Just read an article about how Trent Lott won't allow a bill before the Senate to eliminate cock fighting. It's still legal in 3 states!!!!! Cruelty, violence, and a horrible blood sport are allowable because he's either getting a piece of the action (gambling payoffs) or he's just a miserable excuse for a human being. Time to get him out of our "civilized" government.
kimandkay 03/30/2001
I've always thought Mr. Lott was a bad representative of our government, but after seeing a report on ABC News of his endorsement of cockfighting in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Lousiana (they are banned in all the rest of the states) I find him beyond contempt. Your holier-than-thou attitude is exactly why so many people are turned off by religion these days, which is a shame, because it can be such a great experience and a wonderful path for living your life. If the church would look at its own members, such as yourself, they would surely find the reason for their declining numbers. You, sir ,are one of the biggest hypocrites on this planet. Family values indeed!
Lando 03/30/2001
I watched with disgust today when viewing a report on ABC news that Trent Lott blocked a bill that would have outlawed the "sport" of cocokfighting in the U.S. When offerred an opportunity to respond, he declined comment as is his consistent and shameful pattern. It is inconceivable that the leading Senator of our Legislature would condone/support the violent and barbaric display of human beings training and forcing animals to fight to the death. That this man would abuse his authority of office to withold an opportunity to debate even the merits of such abhorrent behavior, speaks volumes regarding his consistent and arrogant attitude towards the people he has sworn to serve. Mr. Lott, I have had the pleasure to know a few good men, and you sir, are NOT one of them. You are a disgrace.

VOODOO ECONOMICS DIDN'T WORK 20 YEARS AGO, AND IT WON'T WORK NOW- LEST YE FORGET- REAGONOMICS DID NOTHING TO STIMULATE OUR ECONOMY- IT DOUBLED THE NATIONAL DEBT AND CREATED DOUBLE DIGIT INFLATION FOR THREE YEARS RUNNING- DON'T PULL THIS PAGE OUT OF OUR HISTORY BOOK AND TELL US IT WILL WORK THIS TIME--PAY DOWN THE DEBT-- AS YOU WOULD WITH YOUR OWN PERSONAL FINANCES- PAYING THE INTEREST ONLY NEVER DECREASES THE ORIGINAL DEBT--YOU TALK OF FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY ---NOW ACT ON IT

Trent Lott is nothing but a crybaby politician who talks out of his ass instead of his mouth. How can he say airline pilots make too much because of organized labor yet he makes $50,000 more per year than airline pilots for doing what??? Absolutely nothing!!! He would like to bring back slavery to the U. S. It's time to get rid of spoiled politicians like Lott who never worked a day in their lives!!!! Remember Lott, "LIVE BETTER, WORK UNION!"

Mr. Lott seems amazed at President Clinton's job approval rating. Why, Mr. Lott? Democrats don't have to tout their "good heart", "compassionate agenda", and "concern for all people (not just the rich)", as they have passed to laws to prove it. How difficult is it to see why he is loved (and forgiven for his personal "sins") by many? Perhaps those who are mean-spirited have a difficult time with that concept.
Blisship 01/05/2001
I am disappointed in your work with Dashel today. Fear of the future has to be your motivation for giving up the Republican core attitudes and voted desire for whatever slight majority we could muster. You make it so easy for the Democrats to regain control of everything. I feel you made a bed with them for your own political benifit. You will lose, then so shall we.

Next time my rating of Trent Lott my be lower. By the way has anyone seen Trent Lott during this Electorial feeasco,I haven'nt once seen him in open support of George W. Oh and the people of the state Mississippi in which voted for him just recently, are wondering the same thing(why is he keeping such a low profile??)This could cripple his next election if he doesnt take a more active role in supporting George W.

Dear Mr. Lott: Hello, I lived in Mississpi for seven years and when I hit a big problem you were there. I also met you in Greenville, at Jim's Cafe. Mr. Lott, I have written my representatives now that I am back home in Virginia and I am contacting you as the majority leader. Mr. Lott, surely I am not the only one that is thoroughly disgusted with the elections and the behaviour of Mr. Gore and his entourage. If, and unfortunately I believe it will, it comes down to the legislature deciding the outcome of the election, I sincerely hope they will include the actions of the candidates. One certainly must wonder how such tactics would be viewed by foreign dignitaries and working for peace in different parts of the world. After such fiasco, could Mr. Gore be taken seriously in anything that he did? Thank you for letting me bring my feelings to you. Sincerely Theresa Quiggins.

i cannot fathom a us senator hoping a fellow senator(hillary) will be struck by lightning before she gets to serve in the senate because she wants to introduce a bill immediately. what kind of person would wish that for anyone - he must be a really hateful person.
GirIfriend 11/06/2000
Sabotoge of the bill H.R.4844 was the most heinous thing a politician could do. This could have helped the widows of railway workers find some grace and help in their plight for survival. Trent Lott and his crew had advice from Bush NOT to let this bill get past them. BOO for all Republicans, especially LOTT.
inNeed 11/05/2000
Mr. Lott shot down the bill H.R. 4844 that would have given widows to Railway workers the chance to receive a little more income which came 2 decades ago......and now will never be seen......because Bush ordered Lott to hold the bill and find obsecure methods to kill it.
RebelSpiritJ 11/04/2000
Trent Lott and his committee shot down a bill that would have helped the Railway workers' retirement improvements the first time in 2 decades. This was a crass and petty act of politicking and he robbed the railway widows of an improved way of life. He reached for obsecure ways to defeat Bill H.R. 4844 and he held this bill and defeated it out of petty political gains. I will never vote Republican again. NEVER NEVER

Plays to the right wing agenda, even to the point of severely damaging world security or the trustworthiness of the United States. How about the Test Ban treaty?
lelo1659jp 11/27/1999

A party hack who's not even very good at that. He looks the part, though.
Ruby 10/26/1999
Lott cares more about appeasing the media than standing up for Republican priorities. Recent displays of courage (test ban treaty) are unfortuntely an aberration.
