What a disappointment. Several people walked out and if my husband (who always liked george) had not been with me, I would have also. Its hard to hear forty minutes on suicide when it has touched so many people in our area alone. Us being one of those families . He had a few good lines, but when he came out on stage with his cliff notes started touting his new book and upcoming HBO special and lost his tread on several interesting topics I knew we were in trouble.

George used to be really funny but now he is just a bitter liberal with a huge chip on his shoulder. George needs to lighten up.

I gotta love George Carlin...angry or not. Dirty or not. He is smart, funny and I am really excited to see him next weekend. Has anybody seen his act in Charleston or FL this week. I would like to hear your thoughts.
CanadaSucks 10/07/2004
Funny, literate, intelligent. . .he's almost too cerebral for some but has to be considered one of the best comedians of all time. His use of language is amazing. Who could forget the bit about the differences between baseball and football?
Djahuti 10/07/2004
One of the kings of standup- ascerbic and merciless. He's gotten bitter lately, but haven't most people?
frogger20190 09/17/2004
He's starting to resurrect his old jokes so he's not quite as funny as he was. But his random comments and observations are still great--did you ever have an ax go right through your head?
afropath 07/29/2004
Pretty funny, if not one of the most shameless, obscene people I have ever met, but Napalm and Silly Putty one heck of a rant.
nsssomi 07/24/2004
I have read all the other comments and normally would have agreed with George Carlin being the funniest man alive..He has been my hero for 30 years and yet when we saw him at the MGM in Las Vegas on 7/22/04 I was so thoroughly disappointed I almost cried..I see comments on his performances earlier in the year were good but the ones in July coincided exactly whith ours..I think he is trying to work up a new routine and was using the July audiences as guinea pigs. His act was a dismal imitation of the George Carlin I love..It is sad because the whole audience quit laughing and when I looked around people were just shaking there heads..The mood walking out of the theater was quiet and sad similar to walking out of a funeral home after the death of a loved one..I hate to say it but he has become the very thing he used to speak out against. an egotistical arrogant hypocrite..George Carlin has become a self absorbed yuppie..Go buy your self an suv and a cell phone Georgie and join the PTA. You'll fit right in. So long old friend it was fun while it lasted..I saved along time for that ticket money I hope you enjoy your botox injections.

George Carlin is simply the funniest and most brilliant comedian (and thinker) of our time. Saw him on 7/11/2004 at atlantic city and he was his usual hilarious, thought provoking, courageous self. I hope he lives forever and continues to tour forever. When he does die someday, the world comedy and true independant thought will have lost one of the all time greats. George, thanks for being one of my true heroes, and blessing our world with your one-of-kind wit and grace. Will Landstrom

I heard he was good. But if classictvfan doesnt like himthen he must not be good.
ClassicTVFan47 07/10/2004
One of the worst comedians of all-time, George Carlin should have never come out with his seven words speech, which is totally offensive and just plain brainless. The anger in his humor is wholly unappealing as well.
Rater04 06/29/2004
cool and smart - a great irishman!
marcm9999 06/18/2004
Not funny anymore. Lost his relevance 20 years ago.
DoubleT 06/05/2004
We just saw Carlin in Vegas - at least the first half of his act - We walked out. Not only because it was crude and disgusting - it simply was not funny. Don't get me wrong I have no problem with language or off-color topics. I love Carlin's early comedy records and was expecting to enjoy the show. After enduring his raps on suicide, recycling dead female private parts for old men to enjoy, and songs about cancer, we decided we had enough. Carlin told us he was working on a new act for an upcoming HBO special. His comment I'm here for me, your here for me, nobody's here for you! sums him up. Don't waste your money seeing him!!
MeTalhed 05/22/2004
George Carlin's style of stand up is so completely original that you can't help but love this guy. He says the things that we all think. Not afraid to say anything. Still going strong in his older age. This guy will go down in history as one of the greats. Funny as hell.

George Carlin is the greatest (not one of the greatest)comedians since Brother Dave. The dumb people didn't think he was funny either. People with common sense and some smarts knows what he says is so true. George is on a mission to try to tell you dumb folks the truth but you have to listen. Thanks George Always listening Vic

After initially leaving an un-commented five star rating some time ago but now after reading the other comments and upon further review, I am dropping George Carlin down to a four. There is no disputing Carlin's comedic talents, and his material is original and identifiable. The problem is his continued obsession with political issues. This would not be a problem if he had stuck to satire and what is funny about these issues, but his ego has gotten in the way (as it often does with celebrities). Now he spews political matter as if his opinions were undeniable truth. People look for comedy as an escape. If one wants preaching, one would go to church. George Carlin was born on May 12, 1937 in New York City.

like a fine wine, carlin gets better with age.
HighestTemplar 09/06/2003
George Carlin, I've gota say, is the funniest man on the face of the earth. His books or great and his vids or excellent. I just hp the old bastard can stay alive long enough for me to see him in oneof hi shows.
GreenBeret7 07/25/2003
I have always loved George Carlins work. Hes a man who makes alot of sense when he speaks. His opinions i respect as well. I thought that Complaints and Grievances was some of his best work yet.
SFShuggies 06/29/2003
George Carlin in MY opinion is an excelent stand-up commedian. YEs he is a little bitter with his acts, and sometimes he takes things a LITTLE too far, but He can joke about almost anything without out REALLY pissing someone off, and at the same time, he has a witty approach to certain things like the homeless, aging, and Sept 11. His Complaints and Greivances was funny as hell and i beleieve he is the best stand-up commedian in show biz
grosegreg 06/02/2003
His fart jokes are still classic.
ersken 05/08/2003
Carlin is a comedic genius. I don't think anyone questions that. Some people think he is too dark and bitter. But I think he has a right to be pissed off. I think if more people would think for themselves they would be pissed off too. Although most of his material is filled with satire and cynisism, i think his main point is about freedom. Freedom of the speech, freedom of chioce, and basically freedom of the mind. I find that nothing less than uplifting and inspirational.
Chorking 04/28/2003
I love George Carlin because he completely transcends the boundaries of our classical society and provides us a very rude awakening into what we really are. He has shown us our ridiculous subconcious shock face first when encountering profanity, he has taken the pc movement and has molested its meaning, he has taken the face of our society and has blasted it with the fire of his logic and so help me he has exposed the roots of our psyche that show that indeed we have no real intellect outside of the morals that we have been taught! Christians shudder with a subconscious selfish denial as the words reverberate in their minds and politicians FUME that there's a wolf amidst their great flock of sheep stirring up trouble and getting the flock to scramble outside the farmyard fences! He's a great liberal- and he makes most of us laugh, and he also makes most of turn away into ourselves in fear.
Redoedo 03/07/2003
I like George Carlin. I necessarily do not agree with him, but he does make some amount of sense when he speaks. I respect him for his sensible voice of opinions. His "list of people who outta be killed" is probably his best material, and "Complaints and Grievances" is probably his best standup comedy act in the last 10 years. However, I wish he would tone down the profane language a bit.
dbell1998 02/25/2003
Commic genius who is extremely witty. In a country that loves, and believes in, Christianity, warmongering and genocide, its good to have a break from the conservative "one voice" media. Carlin thinks rather than march. Most of America does just the opposite: it's marching with it's brains in neutral.
ratemaster1984 02/09/2003
I'm going to keep this short...George Carlin is a comic genius!!
vetteman03 01/15/2003
I've got very mixed feelings about George Carlin. On one hand, I think he's a very talented comic. I think he's very good at what he does. He can be funny at times. Like his bits on driving and "people who should die." But when he starts spewing his liberal, anti-christian rhetoric, that's when I press the mute button.
foo10019 12/06/2002
A few clever observations floating like funny turds in an ending stream of tough, macho rant against the world and everyone in it. Used to be funny and light and then, guess around the mid 80s, turned bad and ugly like a dish of yogurt left under the sink. Is it worth sifting through the gallons of bitter sewage for the occasional gem? It may be for some. I pride myself on being objective and critical, myself, but I can only read or listen to this guy for a limited time before I got to take a break, and then I find my mood is perceptibly darker than before. Seen him in Vegas, too, recently. He's just as bitter and unpleasant in person.
Damifino 08/06/2002
I understand the complaints of other reviewers about Carlin's language and recent bitterness--his routine never has been for the faint of heart. In my opinion, however, he manages somehow to make it all work. I think it has something to do with the fact that his is, by and large, a well thought-out routine--you can tell he does his homework, and he tinges his comedy with generous doses of truth and observations from everyday life. And, very importantly, he does NOT rely on hackneyed punch lines or worn-out one-liners to pull it off. That, I believe, makes him funny and endearing. He's been at it for nearly 40 years; he must be doing something right!
southernpatrio t 07/06/2002
Another candidate for a bar of "ivory soap in the mouth club"; and I don't think that would be enough to clean his foul mouth. When are people going to realize that there are comedians that don't use manure in their words to make a living?
couchpotato 12/29/2001
Ahhhh. Nothing like pushing the limits to the point when you don't give a s**t about anything anymore. This guy's a modern life hero. Go, George!
Andrew Gilmore 11/02/2001
George Carlin is one of my favorite comedians, but I reeeally think his time is up. He was funny doing material about the little things we all share in life and our use of the English language. Then around 1986, he changed and became what he is now: a bitter, angry, raging, hate-filled old man who despises everyone and everything in the whole world except himself. I assume it's just his stage persona, but it's still annoying. He's not really funny anymore. His most recent work, the book "Napalm and Silly Putty", was pretty funny in a lot of spots, but basically all his material since 1986 has been one long lecture. He expresses hatred towards every little thing. He's just an arrogant, hypocritical old geezer. He still is funny occasionally, but overall, it's really, REALLY time for him to put down the pen, put the mike back in the stand and keep his inhumanly bitter hatred to himself and let the rest of us run our own lifes without this guy criticizing every single thing we do. "I'm tired of not being able to buy clothes that don't have writing on them." "I'm tired of religion. It's a bunch of bull&%@*" "I'm tired of people saying 'no prob'". "I'm tired of the media making a big deal out of it every time anyone dies." "I don't see why people make such a big deal out of killing people. It's helpful." Well, ya know what, George? After 30 years, nobody gives a damn what YOU think anymore! Shut up and leave us alone.
MedgarEvers 10/25/2001
He has some amazingly clever routines: Son of Wino, Ed Sullivan Self-Taught, Airplane Announcements, to name a few. Minus a star because my uncle said he saw him live a while back and he was so stoned that he sat there and talked about the war, and left the stage. Plus, I think he can go a little overboard into filthy comedy.
Mahattma 07/11/2001
Although I do not always agree with George Carlin's material, I do however, appreciate and sometimes envy his outstanding talent. I also strongly agree with his theory of comedy being a form of art, this is something I have tried to show others for years. Comedy Central recently honored him for his achievements.
SSIILL 04/22/2001
Sure Georgee is good at presenting his overused socialistic,atheistic,jealous,bitter,old-farted, material. The cranky jerk has also benefited from the very consumer American culture he always targets. Yeah, after 50 albums, we know he does NOT believe in God. Not exactly an original belief. I do believe in God, and I'm kinda' sure he's not too scared of this raspy sounding little gray-haired geek...
DasILG 03/28/2001
This guy really gives his opinion of life.
georgew 11/22/2000
He's a very political comedian. He's very intelligent, but his lisp bothers me. It makes him sound stupid. He's very smart though and I like the way he incorporates his views of life in his act.
hywmaster3 11/05/2000
IF YOU REALLY SIT AND LISTEN TO HIM AND LET YOUR MIND LOOSE YOU CAN SEE WHAT HE IS SAYING MAKES SENSE.NO OTHER COMEDIAN CAN TAKE A VEIW MAKE IT FUNNY,DANCE AROUND THE EDGES WITH GOOFINESS,BRING IT BACK TO A COMICAL COMMENTARY OF TRUETH AND THEN LET YOU WITH SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT FOR WEEKS AFTER.NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU LISTEN TO HIS TAPES,HE LEAVES YOU THINKING
