The Clash is kind of a classical punk band, if that is possible.

The body of work is very strong, and at its best, superb. One of the giants of their era.
Limpin' Trenchfoot 05/29/2007
While London Calling is a solid album, although there is some dodgy filler here, most of the other albums were patchy especially the hugely overrated debut. You have to say that on balance they're well overrated and singles like 'Rock the Casbah' and 'Should I stay' are as vapid and pointless as anything by Britney. A good band but certainly not a great one.

Never liked this band and I agree with John Lydon that I never cared for the way they structured their songs either. "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"......??????!!!!! How can you people classify this band as one of the punk greats! They are very possibly THE MOST OVERRATED PUNK BAND IN HISTORY! Their first couple of albums have one or two listenable songs on them and the rest of it is complete crap. I wish they had "Cut The Crap" along time ago. Not only that, they continued to spew out all of this anti- rock establishment talk and badmouthed all of the leading arena rock acts of the time for being overblown and bloated old assholes and then came to the USA to OPEN UP FOR THE WHO???? What a bunch of total hypocrites! I don't like "Rock The Cashbox", I don't like "Radio Clash". I don't like 99% of this band's material at all. And yes, I have heard all the albums and I hear all of you praising them for adapting reggae and ska styles to their music and blah, blah, blah. And I hear all of you going on about the best Clash material being stuff that was and never is currently being played on radio. It's that way with almost any rock group, so shut up. The Clash had their 15 minutes of fame playing clubs in the UK when they first came out in the late Seventies and should have broken up then. The vast majority of their material is boring, barely listenable, throwaway junk.

While rock and roll is a young man's game, this axiom especially holds true in the case of punk artists (though considerably less so for its cousin ska). This means that the more legendary punk artists burn bright, yet fleeting, or otherwise the acts become "soft" with maturity and a loss of angst. Notwithstanding the poor late 1985 release "Cut The Crap," the Clash not only wore this mold like a glove, but the band created and broke it as well. Nowhere is this more evidenced than with the indisputable musical masterpiece "London Calling" (1979) which has the band continuing to merge reggae, but also jazz, rockabilly, and (of course) ska. Due to the strength of this release, one should supplement any basic compilation with it, though "The Story Of The Clash, Vol. 1" (1988) is more Clash than most would ever want. Nevertheless, the band loses a star for relatively week vocals.

A great versatile band that experimented with reggae and ska before it was the cool thing to do
oscargamblesfr o 12/13/2005
I'm surprised they are currently 30th on this list. Even allowing that "Combat Rock" wasn't THAT great, and the ill-advised "Cut the Crap" is pretty awful, their earlier work alone shows, IMO, that they are the greatest group of this type. They could be a tad preachy at times, but they are simply the top group of punk, the most diverse and challenging band of their genre and timeframe. Highly influential band, the weak ripoffs of more recent times can't hold a candle to them.
Djahuti 11/03/2005
One of the finest "punk" bands to come out of England and conquer the masses.
Torontosucks 09/16/2005
I don't understand how some of you can rate The Clash so low. Not only are they the greatest Punk band of all time, they are one of the greatest Rock bands of all time. Do yourself a favour and go pick up a copy of London Calling. Give it a good listen. You cannot judge The Clash on a few songs that they play on the radio. The best stuff is what you never hear played.
Peacefrog822 09/12/2005
Best punk band ever, they made me get into punk [now i am really into punk] and joe strummer and mick jones are the best rythim guitarists in THE world
harold77 04/04/2005
Incredible band. They were one of the first punk bands to really stand for something. They were the first rock band to trully embrace reggae ideas and sound. Now you hear it all the time but in the late 70s' and early 80s' it was not common
morrdude 03/20/2005
That the Clash should be any less than #5 on a list such as this is ludicrous. Or at least a good example of the fact that no one younger than 28 frequents this site. Who is this moron? Not very good musicianship, poor 'singing', boring leftwing ranting. Politics and music dont really mix MORON.
DaRick 02/05/2005
Seem like a pretty good band. I like the beat of some of their songs (e.g, Rock the Casbah) but not always their lyrics.
Guava Monkey 05/13/2004
One of the more overrated bands who've acquired some kind of seminal status. Not very good musicianship, poor 'singing', boring leftwing ranting. Politics and music dont really mix. Most kids who like punk/new wave are in it more for the aggression and a superficial and fashionable anti-society attitude or they simply just the music. I suppose at least Joe Strummer didn't sell out like most of his peers.
ARMAGIDEON.TIM E 12/14/2003
The Clash were beyond great. I love many bands, but the Clash have to be my favorite. The Clash (US release) was the first vinyl album I ever bought, and Should I Stay Or Should I Go was the first song I learned on guitar. Songs like Deny, What's My Name, Protex Blue, etc. really make one wanna go out there and punch a wall in, and somehow this is not a bad thing. And London Calling is delicious in its apocalyptic imagery.
