One of the greatest punk bands ever... from a time when punk didn't yet mean cookie-cutter hardcore.UPDATE:On to the future...http://www.myspace.com/radio4UPDATE:Unfortunately, The Clash fell apart before they broke up.

They were lightning in a bottle for five great years but disapointingly fell into the same traps of squabbling, addiction and pressure to out do themselves artisticly and commercially that befall 90% of rock and roll bands. Still, there is no arguing they were the top act of their era and their genre and one of the all-time greats. And Joe Strummer even got around to launching a great but unheralded solo career in the years before his un-timely death that is worth checking out.

If considering a career change, you've got to hear "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" first, at the maximum volume you can endure. ... When you can hear normal conversations again without a ringing in your ears, you'll have made up your mind.

Outstanding. Tortured. Torturous.

Their early stuff was outstanding. Later stuff was good too, but commercial, the hard edges of the early work "blanded" down to accommodate the tender sensibilities of the American masses. Still, one of the best concerts I ever attended was at the Palladium Theatre in NY, in 1979, I think, or maybe 1980. The Clash, the Undertones (an Irish punk band), and Sam and Dave all appeared on the bill, and it was one of the best times I ever had at a rock concert.

The band's music was often charged by a leftist political ideology.
