I like "Light My Fire" but that's about it. I think they are way overrated. Jim Morrison is legendary primarily because of his hostile attitude. Since when does that constitue great music?
ajktpt 02/04/2002
Horrible tunes with one of the lamest singers in Rock history. Also a very amateur band.
Potch1214 11/13/2001
Put aside the Jim-Morrison-as-The-Lizard-King-as-Dionyssus-as-Rock-God image. This was an awsome band. The musicianship was great, beyond most of what was coming out in the 60's. Morrison's lyrics were a brilliant poet exposing himself a piece at a time. His voice was dark, brooding and soulful. One of the best bands in rock history.
Marilyn_Monroe 11/06/2001
I love Jim's poems. I'll always love them like I love them today
Johnny Roulette 10/13/2001
Usually great; occassionally self-indulgent. It never would've lasted. Jim went as long as he could...it was long enough. I don't think much more worthwhile would have come from them. Jim was a mediocre poet, but that would have improved with more maturity. He was the quintessential rock star though. They desrve mch credit for bringing us out of the bubblegum era and into a realistic, gloomier musical world. They were the first first band to have that kind of success with that much darkness in their music. They became the Bores without Jim. What were they thinking. I give a lot of credit for seeing the talent of and producing the early albums from the band X.

When rating a list of the greatest/my favorite all time bands/artists, I put the Doors as #6 (as well as being the best American BAND and second best American artist/band, behind Bob Dylan). Yes, six. Jim Morrison wrote a lot of great songs. The organ played on all of the tracks sound great. Morrison wouldn't be intimidated by anyone, even Sullivan, when he sang the line: "girl we couldn't get much higher" on live TV. Their music is a great look into late '60s psychadelia. They are one of the most enjoyable bands I've ever known.

Jim Morrison died too young. He had so much more to give to music. "People are Strange" was my fav.
TheFreak 09/29/2001
Jim Morrison sure had courage! Threatening to...well. Never mind what he threatened to do. I don't want to talk about it. "Light my Fire" is an ok song, but the group themselves were just a tiny bit weird for my tastes. And yes, all those people who have sent me personal messages about it, I KNOW Queen was weird, too. But they were weird in a good way, an amazing way. Now back to the Doors. An okay band overall. Three stars.

Looking at all the comments on this topic, I've found the most intelligent one has come from Ruby, as cynical as it may be. Morrison had charisma and a tight band behind him, and I have really enjoyed some of their music. They brought some new sounds in the 60's. Two years ago I WAS Jim Morrison. Pretty damn obsessed, and I can understand partially why. The Doors don't do much for me anymore. Perhaps I've grown out of it because they had some immature moments. I understand that Morrison was a troubled and interesting fellow, but the Doors were not built to last.

30 years ago yesterday we lost Jim Morrison. It was a great loss for rock music. He may have acted a little crazy at times, but he was one hell of a singer and song writer. And talk about sexy!!

The Doors were such a legendary band, and so ahead of their time! My favorite band is the Beatles, obviously, but the Doors are a close 2nd. Being only 13, I was a long time from being alive when the Doors were at their peak, so I will never have a chance to see them perform, which I find really sad. It's too bad that my generation is into Britney Spears, NSYNC, and all those other undesirable bands. My favorite Doors songs are Light My Fire and Hello, I Love You. I want to thank my cousin who got me interested in the Doors when I was like 6, because if I didn't know their music, I would be lost.
Gilded Messiah 06/01/2001
OK, personally I think that the Doors are amazing. But statistically, there's something severely wrong with this website. There's ONE rating one, and according to the chart, that comprises 50% of the opinion... Curiouser and curiouser.
Generalissimo MH 06/01/2001
Their politics could've been a little better..

Im only 15 and the doors are my favorite classic rock band of all time! I ran out and got all the cds i could get when i 1st heard *Break on through* not to mention thats my fav. song! I love going to the Beach *Oc Maryland* cause all along the boardwalk they have the coolest shirts in the little head shops! thats where i find all my shirts-! Now everyone at schools trying to be like me with the patches on thier backpacks and trying to get my shirts! it was all me!! hehe- thanks for listening.. Love 15-f-pa!!
janie53185 04/20/2001
The Doors are classic. Anyone who bashes them needs to question their musical taste.
flutterbugg 04/08/2001
THE BEST!!!!! They were way ahead of their time... Jims lyrics... the music... the atmospheric music... those leather pants... YUM!
Timberwulf 03/11/2001
So over-rated it is pathetic. An idiot drug addict fronting what at best is a bad Holiday Inn lounge band. This band has nothing to do with rock and roll.
Ruby 03/11/2001
I'll admit there are some bright spots in the Doors catalog, but there are so many embarrassing misfires, they certainly wind up on the negative side of the rating scale. Just try to listen to the song "Waiting for the Sun" (off Morrison Hotel) without cringing -- and then realize that this is probably their best album!
LedZep 03/03/2001
electrifing and unbeliebably amazing...mind blowind and poetic
crazy_byrd 02/24/2001
Jim got a lot of the credit for this band, but I think Ray was the driving talent of this band.

I saw them! I was stationed in the navy in 1970. I was in Europe (and thankfully away from Vietnam!) when they played the Isle of Wight Festival in August of '70. I put in for a week's leave so I could arrange a trip to the Isle of Wight which was off the southern coast of England. The Doors was the reason I made the trip, and they played the second day I was at the festival. Morrison had a full beard & he avoided the theatrics of his earlier days. He stood real still for most of the set. Some people suspected he was drunk but I think he performed well, his voice came over the PA clear & powerful. He screamed during THE END, and WHEN THE MUSIC'S OVER which woke up the entire crowd that was sitting on the field (it was a huge farm surrounded by hills). They also played LIGHT MY FIRE, BREAK ON THROUGH, etc. The encore was ROADHOUSE BLUES. The entire set is available as bootleg, but a movie of the festival features THE END & WHEN THE MUSIC'S OVER. Long live the Doors!!!!

In spite of or maybe because of the fact that Jim Morrison was the classic disturbed creative genius who couldn't be bothered with reality, the Doors were an outstanding group with a unique sound. Their songs are haunting and still enjoyable to listen to today.
clockworkfloyd 01/30/2001
Should've been higher than this, but no Floyd.
MrMojoRisin 01/29/2001
Absolutely outstanding. The first album is one of rock and rolls greatest.
RockinRob 01/29/2001
The Doors were great! I never get tired of listening to this group.
Flano 01/02/2001
One of if not the best band of all time. Consistantly brilliant albums! Jim was a very talented poet and singer. Theres no denying that he was sex on legs! My favorite song/album is LA Woman
Gabe 12/20/2000

i love every one of jim morrisons songs ever i love him even though i wasnt alive to hear him live i still think he rocks and always will.
Honey Rider 11/11/2000
One of my favorite rock bands of all time. Jim Morrison, what a gorgeous guy! Light My Fire is one of my favorite songs! They rock! What other band could have taken a song like Light My Fire and turned it into The anthem of the "Summer of Love"?
frenchie812 10/27/2000
I love them!
DoorsRBest 10/26/2000
I read somewhere that "Do It" was a strong contender for the worst Doors song ever. I like this song end every other song of theirs although I would have to admit that my least favorite song would probably be "The Changeling" or "Cars Hiss by my Window" or "Been down So Long". Anyways I think that Morrison Hotel and Waiting for the Sun were the best albums. Of course the others were amazing also. I sometimes wonder if the Doors were really that great, if they are really the greatest rock band ever. (too good to be true) After all, they were just four guys playing music together. But when, I listen to their music (especially The End, and L.A. Woman) I realize that they made beautiful melodic, music that no one else could perfect.
budnir3455 10/18/2000
The band that made you explore. The Doors where great with songwriting songs like " Light My Fire" " Break On Through To The Other Side" and "The End" will live forever.
musicman 10/18/2000
The Doors, although not one of my favorites, undeniably carved the way for the out of control, crazy, in your face style we see in so many bands today. Poetry their backbone,an innovative, tripped out rythm section and a psycadellic ora puts the Doors in their own class. Drugs do wonders for the artists creativity. I'll testify.
tag21 09/29/2000
Love them, love them, love them. True legends. True talent. Love The Doors.
fisheyedfool 09/26/2000
Probably the first of the theatrical bands. But they also had the great tunes to carry them. They were a LA based band, and played alot on the strip. Eric Burdon and Morrison became great friends. Two of the greatesr front men of all time. As far as the drugs go, it's antoher one of those, you had to be there to understand.
init9859om 09/05/2000
The band that really changed the look and sound of "rock" music. Of course The Beatles started it, but the Doors took it one step higher. Some of their music, to this day, can not be duplicated. And some of it was PRETTY bad, but all & all a great band with an intelligent but creepy leader. Long live the LIZARD KING !

i know 1 or 2 songs that are good otherwise too sucked into drugs and problems for my taste!!
magellan 06/07/2000
This is one of the shows that I will always regret that I never got the chance to see. I would have liked nothing better than to watch the Doors pound away in some smokey bar, and watch Jim Morrison wasted on alcohol and drugs go deep into his subconscious for some really freaky poetry.
plus5557uk 03/31/2000
AMAZING!!!
mada1105om 01/20/2000
I wish drugs would make me great.
Wiggum 10/26/1999
I like that old quote about the Doors picking up where the Rolling Stones leave off. They were ahead of their time, and their music still sounds great. Check out the live double-CD and try to imagine what it would have been like to see a Doors concert when they were at their peak and Morrison wasn't too messed up to play.
