All of you overly analytical snobs ranting about how Nirvana's music was simple instrumentally, that Kurt Cobain didn't have a technically great voice, or that some of their songs were similar musically to other bands' songs...you guys just don't get it. Their music wasn't about showing off and trying to impress people with their abilities. It was about passion, emotion and expression. Listening to their music, it's clear that the guys really loved what they were doing, and that Kurt Cobain was a very talented songwriter with a unique outlook on life. Kurt was basically the backbone of this band, but as time progressed Dave Grohl would prove himself to be equally talented. As for those of you who are saying that they wouldn't be as acclaimed today if Kurt was alive...well, I don't think that's true at all, because I feel that as good as their 3 studio albums were, Nirvana had not yet reached their full potential when Kurt died.

One of the best things to come out of Seattle. This music is refreshing after being assaulted by the pop genre.

Thank God Cobain did kill himself ! Very immature music.

One of the greatest bands of all time. Completely revolutionary. Who knows where music would have gone without them.

Good, but not as good as some critics perceive them to be. Critics say that Nirvana was responsible for the "grunge" movement. This is is not so. Soundgarden broke onto the scene with Sub-Pop records in the mid-1980's and Alice in Chains followed with Facelift in 1989 (which featured "Man in the Box"; the single also had a video on MTV with a regular rotation). Pearl Jam's Ten album is also overlooked in a sense. Pearl Jam is a direct product of Mother Love Bone who held the grunge throne until Andy Wood's tragic death. Critics made a very big deal out of Nirvana's second release Nevermind, which featured "Smells Like Teen Spirit"; a song that was LATER coined as "the song that changed rock music." The song earned the title after Cobain's death in April of 1994. No one ever heard of Nirvana being "that band", during Cobain's living years. This just goes to show that death can sometimes be your biggest achievement/success. However, I do think Nevermind is an ultimate album (along with many others). Ultimately, a lot of bands during this era (Nirvana included) are riding in a sidecar connected to a motorcycle powered by bands like The Beatles and Chuck Berry.

I like Nirvana and I liked what they did as a Band. As for Kurt...a true musical genius. original, raw, mesmerising talent. Did it all get too big? Thanks for your contribution Kurt and thanks for the memories.

Solely responsible for ruining music for the '90s. Began a downward trend.

I wonder what Kurt would have thought of Rolling Stone magazine--one of his favorite big-music-biz punching bags--listing Nirvana just behind the Beatles and Stones and just ahead of Led Zeppelin on its list of the greatest bands of the millenium. My guess is that, as usual, he would have mixed emotions about it. And mixed emotions, contradictions, paradoxes, are what created both his life's torture and his music's intensity. Like John Lennon singing "count me out...in" on "Revolution," Kurt and Krist and Dave created songs where the alternating between sonic assault and low growl fit the ambiguity of the lyrics. The desire for acceptance and understanding always battles with the battle for independence within Nirvana's music. "Pick me, Pick me, yeah...I'm real good at hating." It's tragic but perhaps little surprise that Kurt ended his life. He was being ripped apart by his own thoughts. Nirvana's paradoxical music--melodic as a lullaby then abrasive as a primal scream--created a hypnotic mixture of pop and grunge. Some argue this was a sellout, but in this achievement I think they crystalized what rock is all about. Think: Elvis, the Beatles, the Stones...all brought black music to the white mainstream. Likewise, Nirvana offered a reasonable-enough facsimilie of Seattle punk to spark an entire craze within the great suburban unwashed...and beyond. Every subversive movement needs a codifier, a translator, to deliver its message undetected--after all, the term "rock and roll" itself is a euphemism for sexual intercourse. Nirvana created a musical euphemism for grunge, and altered the institution of rock and roll. Oh, and they're also simply kick-ass to just listen to. Long-live K.C. and his sunshine band.

I think that Nirvana was one of the best bands in the last 20 years. Whether or not people agree with me i dont care. I think that it is unfortunate that society has lost such agreat band and a great man And that we are still stuck with a money grubbing whore like courtney Love and Hope to everything that is sacred that Frances does not turn out to be anyhting like her mother. Long live Kurt Cobain may he rest in peace.

Nirvana, what can I say about this band? It was a great band, a band of raw emotion and feeling. I love it. To say it killed music.. you are in denial, my friend. Music died in the 80s. Nirvana has been one of the only great bands since them, although I love Nevermind.. I can't really say it's Nirvana.. If you want true Nirvana go out and get one of their other great albums, may I suggest Unplugged in New York or Bleach. Those were great albums and you can see them from their two very different sounds, sadness and anger. Polly and Pennyroyal tea must be two of the most underrated songs in history, you should give them a listen.. to those of that don't love Nirvana, that is your opinion but.. to say they sucked is like saying Led Zepplin sucked. I can't even do it with a straight face.
mattsgal02 11/16/2002
They are the grestest band ever, no matter what people think!!!!!
chingon_10 10/30/2002
To me, it is the best band ever. They changed rock forever. I really admire them. Hearing "You Know You're Right" makes me even miss the band more.

Too bad this band only lasted six years. Great band!

I'd commit suicide too, if I had to put up w/ Courtney Love. Nirvana had some bad ass jams that i still enjoy listening to. They had their beliefs, but weren't too closeminded to explore new things. I have great respect for the band.

Cobain was a whiner and an awful "musician". I don't understand why people love this band so much. They we're terrible.

it was very awful for such a great peson like kurt cobain to have died.he was a very singer.i love him
amy214 04/06/2002
First off, Nirvana was and always will rock. All of you who are giving them 1 star and saying "they have no talent" seriously need to get a life. You obviously weren't around when Nirvana was alive. If you don't like their music fine, but how dare you say they have no talent? Oh, I'm sure thats why they had 4 chart-topping albums. That's why they were so popular with sold out concerts. Ya, sure...
oodie 04/01/2002
One of THE best bands of the 90's and one of the best in the last 20 years---Nirvana changed popular music for the better--all but eliminating Hair metal and bad pop from the charts! too bad Mtv and corporate radio exects have worked to bastardize Nirvana's sound into corporate rock bands like Creed. i'm not saying Cobain was a genius--i leave statements like that for people like Bob Dylan. But he was masterful and now missed in this state of confusion and schlock music is now in
Lukefrogeater 03/31/2002
Nevermind was a fantastic album. In Utero was damn good to. But on some of their other albums not everything is as great. Unplugged was a highpoint. Still Nevermind is a classic.
harlan 02/26/2002
if i could give 1 star i would i HATE THEM THEY SUCK no musical talent what so ever and im tired of hearing about poor kurt kobain cause he killed him self he a artist i think not
ajktpt 02/05/2002
Lame singer and "no can play" band. Amazing that they ever landed a paying gig let alone a recording contract. Most garage bands should stay in a garage, at least of this groups musical caliber. Sorry the lead singer "offed" himself, tho. I'm sure he was a nice guy.
TheFreak 10/30/2001
Nirvana put on an amazing show. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was terrific. No one has the voice of Kurt Cobain...it is all his own. Not the best voice I've ever hear, but wonderful in it's own way. To tell y'all the truth, I actually find it amazing Cobain lasted as long as he did...he obviously wasn't put out for all the popularity and fame Nirvana got. The music world took an awful blow with Cobain's suicide, as they do with any rock star's death. I've got my Lyric of the Day, but I must have another: I had a mind to stop you. Let me in...
nirvanaalways 10/30/2001
though maybe slightly over rated... I ask anyone to come up with better music from the early 90s. Maybe they are more popular since Kurt died. Humans are blood thirsty like that. But people of my age ( i'm 24 ) will always see him as one of the best
Lord of the Waves 10/19/2001
Nirvana. Name of band describes what i think when listening to this music. Smells like Teen Spirit is the best song definitely. Cobain was sortof weird but in a loveable kind of way. Not as popular as they should be.
zenithfish 08/27/2001
it's nirvana. need i really say more? they broke ground for mainstream rock, no matter if you like it or not.
UberBiatch 08/19/2001
No they are not just famous because Kurt died. They made 4 blinding albums. Stop. Full Stop.
Joey 333 08/01/2001
The band that started it all... you can't not like Nirvana. If it wasn't for them, imagine what the music scene now would be like... (I'd bet it would be worse).
SpiritualMachi ne 08/01/2001
Nirvanna was going to save rock.

I think that nivana was and is the greatest band ever. We'll miss Kurt.

Though I don't like to hear of anyone dying, Kurt Cobain was a heroin addict loser.
beat_on_the_br at 06/26/2001
how can you NOT like nirvana??
KDC94 06/24/2001
Nirvana is one of the greatest bands there ever was and ever will be. Kurt Cobain was one of the most talented musicans ever. People who say that nirvana is only popular because of Kurt's death or TOTALLY wrong. How could you say that if they were selling TONS of records before his death, and having sold out shows all the time. There music was recognized the same before and after his death...i dont see where you people are getting you information from. Also, i know many of u dont think this but i think that Courtney Love had something to do with Kurt's death. There's so my evidence to back it up and to me it's pretty obvious. Well i just wanted to say that i have LOVED nirvana for many years and i always will. And it had nothing to do with Kurts death, i was in love with them before his death and after. and to me Kurt is a god. and there will never be a band like them and there will never be a person like Kurt. Nirvana truly does rule.
Besmirched 06/06/2001
Back in my mid-teens, some 6 or 7 years ago, I was a really bug Nirvana fan and I was devastated when Kurt done himself in. BUT to be honest I don't think they've really stood the test of time, and their songs sound stale when I listen to them now.
coyoteangel72 06/03/2001
This band has changed my life.
NaturallyYou 05/23/2001
Wow, do you really think that Nirvana saved music? And call their music beautiful? Celebrate his drug fueled life? If anything, we should be glad Nirvana is no more!
ILoveTV 05/19/2001
I think they are terrible!
TNtimber 05/13/2001
One of the most talentless bands ever.
RottenApple 04/17/2001
HEY! Nirvana was a very great and cool band, but are you not forgetting something!! Nirvana wasn't only KURT COBAIN. It also contained Krist and Dave (and a few other persons, expecially drummers). Without them Nirvana would never have been there! It IS tragic that Kurt died, but don't you dare to think only of him when you think of Nirvana.
Talena 04/09/2001
Nirvana is one of the greatest bands in history. I love Kurt Cobain so much. He was such a great musician. It's a shame he is dead now...such a waste of talent. Oh yeah, he didn't commit suicide either...he was murdered.
Marthatub 04/03/2001
Absolutely talentless
bibbleoo 03/25/2001
i wish sooo much that Kurt was still alive, but we can still enjoy his music * * \__ / (|)
