I like some of their stuff, but for some reason, the sound of Billy Corgan's voice is haunting....

One of the defining bands of the '90s. I started listening to them when Siamese Dream was out. That album really influenced my life at the time. From there I bought Gish and listened to that. It took several listenings to actually start enjoying it, since it was so different from S.D. not to mention a lot of the songs sounded the same. Siamese Dream was a natural evolution of Gish, and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was a natrual evolution of S.D. M.C.&I.S. was their highwater mark. I personally attribute the start of the downfall of the Pumpkins to the death of Johnathan Melvin, their touring keyboardist at the time whoo overdosed on heroin while shooting up with Jimmy Chamberlin. I think that event caused something to snap in Billy's mind. After the tour for M.C.&I.S, they lost direction. Adore and MACHINA sounded like music being made from a band who's soul had been ripped out. If you don't have any of their albums, check them out in the following order: Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, MACHINA, Pisces Iscariot, Gish, Adore. That order will give you a good feel for what the Pumpkins were really like at their core. The actual order in which the albums were released is: Gish ('90), Siamese Dream ('92), Pisces Iscariot ('94), Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness ('95), Adore ('98) and MACHINA ('00). They get 4 out of 5 stars from me because of two reasons. #1 Billy was a dictator and 99% of the time didn't listen to any input from the other members (he wrote all the songs himself). #2 They were horrible live. Billy's voice sounds like a strangled cat when he's out of the studio and he has the annoying habit of ad-libbing instead of sticking to the version of the song found on the CD.

All of their music just seems to sound the same. And the music just seems to depress me when I hear it on the radio. When I'm in a bad mood, yeah maybe I would listen, but never because I like the music.

THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT THIS BAND . EVEN THEY ARE NOT BEAUTIFUL AT ALL , BUT THEY HAVE THAT CHARM THAT MAKES YOU LOVE THEM . SOMETIMES WHEN I LISTEN TO 1979 I FEEL LIKE SCREAMIG AND JUMPING AS HIGH AS I CAN. I'M VERY AMUSED ABOUT MY REACTIONS , BECAUSE I' A LAWYER AND I'M RESPECTED BY MY MATES , MY BOSS AND SO ON. YES , THEY ARE DEFENETLY GREAT . LOVE YOU AND I CAN'T BE FUN WHEN I LIKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS.

While I have to admit that they are not my favorite band, I have to give them five stars for being inventive, talented and probably the most unique band to come out since Depeche Mode and U2....

i admit billys voice is strange as hell...he's funny looking...and personally scares me...but that's just what made smashing pumpkins the smashing pumpkins

This is my favourite band. They survived for many years and they were always able to write songs which were unique but that sounded good. A lot of bands tend to produce a bunch of songs which have a really similar sound to them, but the Smashing Pumpkins always produced unique stuff that you hadn't heard from them or anyone else. They've produced heaps of great albums, my favourite being "Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness". I think their best songs are on the "Melon Collie" album, you should definitely listen to some of their stuff if you haven't already done so.

Gish and Siamese were great albums, infinite sadness was ok,but when i go to a concert i want to hear the music not billy rambling on for an hour or so.

I beleave that the smashing pumpkins are the best rock band that have ever lived. I have listened to them every sence I have listening to music, Billy is a very powerful person, with very powerful views. The smashing pumpkins vary form the saddest events that can take place in a persons life to the happiest. They are a dream that came to reality. For my generation they changed everything, and I wish they would have stayed around longer then they did. But what they left behind was something that I will remember forever. They just rock.

The Pumpkins are amazing. Great lyrics, great image and a varied sound too. All their albums are different and each one excellent in its own way. I can't wait to go and see them next week.
jaialai4011 09/30/2000
Talented, but they seem like they are a little bit contrived. They oversell their songs a lot.

Nope, they just are not that impressive. They are not that cool. I am not sure what all of the hype was/is/will ever be. 'Gish' was a terrific record, but they have all gone pretty much downhill since then. They spit out a catchy tune every once and a while, but they are nothing special. I have only see them live once and on TV, and it does not sound great, Billy Corrigan screams way too much and the layered guitar sounds on their albums just do not sound as nice and harmonious without the aid of the studio. Corrigan is also looking a little too much like Sinead O'Connor form the early 90s these days.

Cool stuff. That's what he Pumpkins make. Billy Corgan has shown that he can relate to a young audience, and the band has shown that they have what it takes to stay together. They are going to be around for a long time to come.

The Smashing Pumpkins are lame. I dont buy that bald-headed gothic thing. If i hear one more tortured song about vampires etc. i will throw up.
harm1532om 11/23/1999
They were better with their original rock sound. The new techno thing's terrible.
Wiggum 10/26/1999
I think I'd like them more if they put our LESS music. Can we have a little break?
