My favorite band, for my entire life. ^.^

Rock and Roll is about rejecting mindless conformity. Ironically, as can be seen in such literary pap as Rolling Stone magazine, Rock and Roll has been replaced by an ultra-conformist society of "Rock and Roll" personnel. Rush has never sacrificed their integrity for a dollar. For that they deserve just about more respect than anyone else listed on this site. Oh, and don't forget their musical abilities. Sure, Geddy Lee's voice isn't exactly an exemplary vocal talent, but ask any respected bass player about him and you'll find that he's one of the best. Same goes for Neil and drummers. And Alex ain't bad either.

i'd give them more stars, but they won't let me. no one but no one plays guitar like alex. some of his lead work is so fast and sophisticated, it's style has never been used by others because they can't do it. even some of his new stuff. try playing the lead break to the song "time and motion". get ready to scratch, ache, and make facial distortions trying to do it right. most people are turned off to rush because of geddy's voice. these people are not used to hearing a great singer before in rock. so they, in true mtv fashion, dismiss him. the same people who call axl rose a great vocalist. please! his bass playing is original. he plays it like a lead guitar. considered very influencial by gods like cliff burton and steve harris. this guy also plays keyboards (a lot of them) and guitar. sometimes all in one song! neil, alas neil, talk about a drum kit! drums played like drums have never been played before. perfect everything. the way he integrates his drum playing with the music is just amazing. if mozart, beetoven, and bach were born today, they would have formed a band called rush.

I am 43 years old. I've listened to it all. For the thundering "Hammer of the Gods" sound Zeppelin takes it. AC\DC and all of thier spawn get the "snotty school boy" award. RUSH however stands in a catagory that they created, and few others either dare, or perhaps care to follow. Although they have't enjoyed the commercial success of thier earlier years, they are still great showmen, and musicians. I once read a webpage that made the case that all of Rush lyrics alluded to the LSD experience. It was very well laid out. It could be crap, but who knows? I'm one of the simple people who just appreciated them based on the surface value of thier music.

My family has long been a rush fan. My little brother is named after Geddy Lee. I have to admit their older stuff is better but you have to give them credit for still being around after over 20 years
alfachimp 11/27/2002
RUSH is the tightest band I have ever seen in my life. The rhythm, syncopation, it's all as played by one set of six hands. They get better everytime I see them.
cannon 11/16/2002
my favorite band since i can remember.awesome drums, awesome bass.rush rules!!!
Ultra 10/29/2002
5.0 is for their earlier work. Neil Peart - Master Drummer and Poet (lyrics) Geddy Lee - Bass, Synths, Vocals (Good at all, not great at any, but he did a lot) Alex Lifeson - Master Gutarist

This Canadian hard rock trio hasn't been exactly a music critic's darling (which is why they're underrated) but they lead a pretty good fan base and they've given us a good few songs that can never be forgotten - "Tom Sawyer", "Spirit Of The Radio", "Red Barchetta", etc. They've seem to get away from that raw edgy sound a bit in their recent years but they're still rockin' so more power to them.
spyguy 08/10/2002
They forge their creativity...Closer to the heart! It says it all. Libertyman was right on the money when he said Rush is like a religion.
Rick S 06/28/2002
Ive been listening to Rush since 1979 and think by far they are the greatest band of all time. They are WORLD class musicians, the best in each one of their trades. There never has been nor never will be a 3 piece band that can do so much!
oodie 04/09/2002
soundtrack for d&d geeks who read tolkein. Rush is mediocre at best--even in the horrid realm of prog rock they have nothing on old genesis records. geddy lee sounds like a girl, neal pearts lyrics are meant to be cerebral but justin timberlake is deeper. i guess alex liefson is an ok bass player
Potch1214 11/13/2001
What an awesome group. Arguably the best bassist and drummer in rock and roll history reside in Rush (And the guitarist is no slouch at all). Geddy Lee's playing (bass & keyboards) and his voice are fantastic. Neil Peart is a GOD behind a drum kit. He also writes fantastic lyrics (check out, "Nobody's Hero" and try not to cry). Alex Lifeson, the most underrated guitarist in rock and roll. This guy absolutely shreds. And need I even mention the songs? "Tom Sawyer," "Red Barchetta," "YYZ," "Freewill," "Roll The Bones," "2112," "Limelight," "New World Man," "The Launch," "Subdivisions," "Fly By Night," "Stick It Out," "Big Money," "Distant Early Warning," "By-Tor and the Snow Dog," and so many others. What a fantastic band! One of my favorites for about 20 years now!

Do I even need to explain??? I think not.
Bowl3X300 07/18/2001
Rush is the best and most versitile band ever to be together. How can three people produce so much sound. Geddy, Alex, and Neil need a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Synthetic 07/17/2001
Truthfully told, their music has been classified as 'Intellectual Rock', which I think fits perfectly - These guys are by far the best musicians of our time - the fact that some people don't "get it" is a combination of taste and lack of comprehension.
PRATTONTHELOOS E 07/17/2001
BY FAR THE BEST GROUP ON THE PLANET!!! WHAT OTHER TRIO CAN PULL OFF ALL THAT MUSIC WITHOUT EVEN THE UTMOST HITCH. THEIR ONLY DOWNFALL IS THAT THEY ARE TOO CEREBRAL FOR THE MASSES. KINDA LIKE IT THAT WAY.
Milton 07/10/2001
If i hear Metheny, Holdsworth, Y Jackets, Jarrett, Corea, Colaiuta, Ponty, and others... Is simply because when i was 14 i heard Permanent Waves. By the way, i'm 34 now and i am still listening to this great band. Como decimos en mi pais... Para el gusto se hicieron los colores.
Celestial_Mech anic 06/06/2001
RUSH may be the most misunderstood band in all of Rock and Roll. A "Casual Listener" might hear Geddy Lee's vocals and be turned away... but RUSH has never been about the "Casual Listener". The Canadian Rock Trio are made up by: Neil Peart (Drums), Geddy Lee (Bass, Keyboard and Vocals) and Alex Lifeson (Guitar). RUSH has always been about the music, it's purity and it's on going evolution. Each of the band members are WORLD CLASS Musicians, and a good portion of their fan base are other Musicians. RUSH has been described as "The Musician's Musician"! RUSH has and will continue to inspire many to learn an instrument, and learn to play well... just like their hero's. I have been a Drummer for 28 of my 38 years on this this rock... Thank you Mr. Peart for the inspiration!!! Thank you, Neil Wiessler aka Celestial Mechanic

I think the manipulation of an old Porsche add fits best: Rush...Nothing else even comes close ! It is HIGHLY unlikely that any non-musician can appreciate the creativity, talent, and integrity of such a talented band. The complexity is too substantial for a "listener." Appreciation of a band like Rush requires effort, and the general populous prefers passive entertainment. The "Musicians' Musicians" aptly describes the Canadian Power Trio. As a percusssionist (primarily) and a "part-time" bassist, I can safely say that in over 20 years of Rock'n and Rollin' I've found no equal.
Hoser 06/05/2001
Rush is such an awesome band in so many ways, great drumming, guitar playing, bass playing, keyboard playing, pedal playing.....All that with three guys, pretty amazing if you ask me. Probably the reason so many people rated them bad is because they didn't give the music a chance or because they're on some Rush hate bandwagon. You can't just listen to a minute of a Rush song and make a judgement, you really have to listen, then it just hits you. Anyone who makes a judgement of something from a small snipet has got some serious problems and doesn't have a clue about what they're talking about in the first place. ROCK ON RUSH!!!
pipsey 06/05/2001
There aren't many bands in the world with as dedicated and longstanding a fan base as Rush, and there's a reason for this. Neil's lyrics are philisophical and intelligent, and his drumming is superb. While Geddy Lee's vocals scare away the casual listener(more for the rest of us, eh?), I personally like them, and he's an excellent bassist as well. Alex's guitar work and especially his solos are great as well. No matter how much virtuosity they have as a band, however, not everyone is going to like Rush. There isn't any need for everyone else to bash them, though.
magellan 06/05/2001
I can't listen to Rush anymore without thinking of the Pavement song off of "Brighten the Corners" that goes... "and what about the voice of Geddy Lee, how does it get so high, I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy..." While I liked "Tom Sawyer" as much as the next guy back in fifth grade, I just never saw the attraction of this band. They're kind of grating if you ask me.

This Band is my favorit by far. There is no band that sounds like them that have 3 people period NO ONE. Lets start with Neil. Who plays the drums like him......yes come on think what what was that u said lars....haha NO come on....keith moon....Not close.... NO one plays like him. His timing is insane he is by far the best rock drummer out there. Alex....His guitar playing dosn't sound like Angus from acdc and eddie but it is complexe and his harder then u think if u play guitar try to play some of the stuff with the right timing either u cant or it will take u a long time to learn it. Geddy.....Damn he is my idle i play bass and i am 15 i have been trying to play his stuff for ever and i just cant do it his bass parts are insane no one comes close and in concert he plays killer bass riffs plays the key board and sings at the same time...who does that. And what the hell is this about saying they are hard pop this and hold your fire is alot of pops songs that is BS BS they are not pop that is an insalt they are Rock leave it at that u no what pop is n suck suckmydickboys britney"plastic"spears that is pop Rush is not pop and MadonnaGal are u a dumb ass they are not a typical canadian band..when did u get hit in the head no band even sounds like them and canadian bands have some really cool music well lets get down to the point they are one of the best Rock bands out there and they should be in the rock n roll hall of fame. $rock on$

Honestly, if you can put up with the Spinal-Tap-like excesses, the Ayn Rand propaganda, and the pseudo-intellectual pap of the 1st few albums, you'll hear some good hard-rock. Case in point: "La Villa Strangiato" from Hemisspheres is an excellent & even catchy instrumental. The albums in the 80's show a total transformation from nebulous songwriting to more structured hard rock/pop. Hold your Fire is the most interesting of these albums. It's kind of a hybrid of hard rock/metal & pop. (Hard Pop)? You'll hear the oddest hard rock/metal guitar solos mixed with some intricate pop music, &, of course, Neil Peart's intimidating drums. It's not always successful, but it's certainly interesting. From Presto onwards they seem to have mastered pop song-writing. Though the "rap" sequence in Roll the Bones comes up really lame. They sound more like the Hard Pop version of Vanilla Ice than anything else. Rule of thumb: stick with the 80's, esp. Power Windows & Signals.

I was one of those Rush FREAKS when I was in jr. high, and I'll save them from a one-point rating b/c I did go back and recently listen to Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves. I have to admit that some of those songs do rock -- "Limelight" especially -- but in that frighteningly sterile way that only Rush seems capable of (not that there are many others aspiring to such a thing).
crazy_byrd 02/24/2001
Typical Canadian poo. And I'M CANADIAN...this band just sucked from day one. Can't stand them.
X_SnowDog_X 02/22/2001
You can't even put these musicians in any musical category. You almost have to make a whole other spectrum to place them in. I have been listening to RUSH since about 1982. I'm 31 now and my whole life is filled with memories that coincide with RUSH music. An unbelievable band with 3 of the most inspirational musicians. More memories to come from this power trio.

Simply, the BEST!
binoj 02/06/2001
Neil Peart - Beautiful Drum Parts, Perfect Timing, Never overplaying, Beautiful Use of Toms and Cymbals and one the most articulate persons I have heard - his lyrics are testimony to his intelligence and philosophy. Such an inspiration!!! Geddy Lee - Amazingly nimble bass sound, Sounds better now than he ever has, incredibly melodic - listen to his solo CD. Alex Lifeson - Virtuoso lead and rythmn guitars. The best tone and timing among guitar players - like Steve Morse - great variety with his playing
Libertyman 02/06/2001
Ah, Rush: you either love them or you hate them, and their rating proves it. The best concert I ever saw was Rush in the 1990 Presto tour. Unbelievable musicians. These guys are the best. Rush is like a religion to it's fans, and non-fans just don't understand.
geddysmomma 02/03/2001
I think Rush is the best band. Their lyrics are intelectual. Their music is exciting and complex. Gotta love 'em!

If I could rate this band higher, I would. They continue to make a huge impact on my life. I still find it refreshing to hear their music (new and old) and know that there are still true citizens of the world out there.

The kings of Progressive rock. Geddy Lee is the greatest rock bassist of all time, and is the reason I am a bass player today. Neil Peart is a god.

Rush's Geddy Lee inspired me to become a bassist at age 9. I currently work as a studio musican and have played with numerous progressive rock bands. I'm having a great time and I owe it to the greatest rock band in the world "RUSH!!!!!"

This Canadian trio is, without a doubt, the greatest progressive rock band ever to enter the studio... and to see them perform live is an amazing experience! Three awesome musicians with superb synergy--the best!

Better than just great. These guys have things to say besides being exceptional musicians. They are incredible to see live also!
