Carson McCullers (1917-1967) is best known for the 1946 novel Member of the Wedding. McCullers’ writing is often defined by a permeating sense of spiritual isolation inherent in the human condition. Love is often a central need within McCullers’ work with characters seen as outcasts and misfits never having that desire fulfilled. McCullers suffered a series of strokes in her early adult years, which left her partially paralyzed, due to a misdiagnosis of rheumatic fever as a child.
