Joseph Rudyard Kipling’s (1865-1936) best known works include The Jungle Book, Kim, and the poem Gunga Din. In his life Kipling was a staunch defender of Western Imperialism, who coined the phrase “White Man’s Burden.” Kipling considered it the West’s duty to bring civilization to the undeveloped world. In 1907 Kipling was awarded the Nobel Prize. Kipling was also offered knighthood and the post of British Poet Laureate, but he turned down both honors.
