One of the best character actors ever. Broke the Hollywood mold as Popeye Doyle in the French connection.
sunstorm1001 06/02/2007
I can't say anything other than EXCELLENT!!
Jeremy00081 09/12/2006
Personality is obviously an extemely important aspect of acting, and Gene's puts me off a little. He just doesn't seem like a nice guy, to put it lightly. But he's Gene Hackman, so I had to give him 4 stars. "Superman", man. "superman".

Very over rated.
GenghisTheHun 12/11/2005
He will go down in film history as a member of the top five of all time.
bimdan 11/25/2005
Truly one of the most under-rated actors of our time.

Whatever you do, don't sell that cow!
Wid71 08/13/2005
Brilliant actor. Definitely in the top 20 all time greats.

this guy is one of the best going. a long list of good roles in good movies: Superman, The Firm, Absolute Power, Mississippi Burning,Crimson Tide, bonnie and clyde. Just a talented believable actor.

The Conversation is a clasic
tomcondelles 04/11/2005
I have been a Gene Hackman fan since BONNIE AND CLYDE, also loved him in THE CONVERSATION.
texasyankee 03/31/2005
He played a lot of classic characters, and I will always respect him for that, but nothing that really had a lot of pizzazz.
Maomania 03/01/2005
I don't really care for him as a person but he is a decent actor who at least deserves a three.
dpostoskie 02/04/2005
I enjoyed watching Denzel in Crimson Tide and Clint in Unforgiven, then there was Stone in The Quick and the Gene.

Brilliant actor! He shines in every film he's made. Yes, he could be more selective with the films he choses to make, but with a body of work like his there are plenty of first-rate films. For those who think of him as Lex Luther, please take a look at Scarecrow, The Conversation, and Unforgiven -- his performances will give you chills (in a good way).

I have to remove a star because Hackman suffers from "Sean Connery Disease": an excellent character actor with a nice range on top of it, but a tendency to appear in too many films that waste his talents. I wish Hackman would be more selective in the projects he takes on. He has a remarkable work ethic with a proven track record of being one of the hardest working men in Hollywood. If his energies were focused on one film per year, Hackman would turn out masterpiece after masterpiece instead of dozens of films which are mostly no better than above-average. In dramatic roles, Hackman is mostly convincing and captures the viewer's attention like few others can. When he does a comedic role, he still commands attention, yet in a loose and daring way; by "daring" I mean that he will do just about anything to make the audience laugh with him. His only flaw is getting stuck in films that feature his talent yet fail in other aspects. If you were stuck in a room with Hackman-only films to watch for the rest of your life, you'd not only have a LOT of films at your disposal, but you would be consistently entertained by a true professional at work on the screen before you.

Mr. Versatility as an actor in the same vein as Bob Deniro, Tom Hanks, and Robin Williams.
iluvamerica 08/02/2003
He was funny in The Royal Tenenbaums, but he always scared me when I was younger.
Redoedo 05/04/2003
Hackman is a great actor who in my opinion has never given a bad performance. I haven't seen all of his films, but I've seen most of them, and they were all good performances on his part, even if the films themselves were only average. He was great in "Superman" as Lex Luther. However, my favorite performances of his include "Hoosiers", "No Way Out" and "Absolute Power". He is an actor with a lot of depth and range, and he manages to make his characters believable on screen.
frankietwoputt s 04/24/2003
This guy has never given a bad performance, and rarely if ever been in a movie that wasn't watchable, the consummate pro.
Mr. Gone 02/22/2003
One of the best natural actors ever. Hackman makes otherwise mediocre movies worth watching.
Theatre_Bug_05 02/17/2003
Royal Tenenbaums. Need I say more. Great in any role you could give him.
callmetootie 01/13/2003
His days are done now, but he was at one time an excellent, and totally mesmerizing actor. Look at his work in The French Connection and The Poseidon Adventure, and forget his work in Loose Cannons and The Royal Tenenbaums.
WildCoyote 01/12/2003
No comments for such an execellent actor! watch any of his movies an be delighted!
Buck Barrow 10/23/2002
. . . but sometimes stars in some pretty bad movies.
ellebee 10/02/2002
the subtlest, perhaps greatest, screen actor since spencer tracy.
T_Rex 07/28/2001
I think Gene Hackman is a very underrated actor, and i dun really understand why he aint billed in Top Movies stars of all time. Hes a great actor with great attitude, he can play all kinds of roles real well, and if u observe his actings closer, he actually has a great sense of humour!
TomC 06/20/2001
Hackman can write too! Pick up a copy of "Wake Of The Perdido Star", a fascinating collaboration piece (written with Daniel Lenihan) about a young man's coming of age during an adventurous journey on the high seas. I couldn't put it down from anticipation of the "what's next".
CastleBee 02/13/2001
This man has amazing acting range not to mention apparent excellent taste when it comes to selecting his work...and I am sure he's had that option for quite awhile. Over the years his characters have made me laugh (Young Frankenstein) question their sanity (Bonnie and Clyde) warmed my heart and made me cry (Hoosiers). Hackman can truly do it all!
Kucharules 02/10/2001
Definetly one of my favourtie actors. Mr. HAckman worded hard in all films he starred in and I definetley looking forward to see more of his work.
Ruby 12/19/1999
Seems like you can count on him to play one character well: the hardnosed but humane guy who's made some mistakes but is trying to work it out. It sure worked in Hosiers though.
