It's too bad that Watterson stop making these several years back. This strip holds up really well and will for quite sometime. It's funny to see Calvin on the back of trucks nowadays.

I think that Bill Waterson's graphic art exploration of the human spirit was comparable to the work of Charles Schultz's "Peanuts." I also believe that Hobbes would make an extremely good friend.
Echo419 12/11/2002
hey teaseress, it was the transmogrifier. the box also doubled as the time machine and the duplicator lol... he was an amazing boy and the comic was great.. im only missing two books in the series
lukskywlkr. 12/05/2002
One of my must-read strips, or used to be anyway.
traincollector 11/20/2002
No comic will ever be as fantastic as Calvin and Hobbes. It was sheer genius that played on two levels that is almost impossible to see in this format. Where oh where have you gone!
DjBong69 11/16/2002
I used to read these books as a kid. I mean...i could still read them now. They get the best laughs outta me. I guess cuz they remin me of myself, and my brother. Calvin's character is just the typical crazy little kid...that does some brilliant hillarious things.
thadea 11/15/2002
CLASSIC. Calvins waterballoon antics are great along with falling asleep in class...not too far off from everyday life

My flatmate has a book of Calvin & Hobbes cartoon strips and being a nosey little girl I decided to read it - and I am so glad I did. Calvin is a very intelligent young boy who has a fantastic vocabulary and kinda speaks to his parents just a tiny bit rudely - hates school and has the most fantastic adventures with Hobbes. I love the time when Calvin made this machine (which was just a cardboard box) and when you went into it, you could become a different animal - Calvin became a tiger just like Hobbes and then Hobbes turned him into the wrong thing - or the one where Calvin duplicates himself! This is absolutely hilarious and I would love to get my hands on more.

Bill Waterson has an obligation to society to continue "Calvin and Hobbes." How can Bach not compose? How can da Vinci not paint? How can Michelangelo not sculpt?
Molfan 11/04/2002
A very good comic strip. An imaginative strip about a boy named Calvin and his stuffed animal Hobbes. Hobbes comes alive for only Calvin. CAn be very funny with the predicaments they get into. an adorable comic strip that is even fun for the adults to read. Sorry that this strip is no longer being made.
Rob9011 11/04/2002
Absolutely, without any doubt.. The best comic strip of all time. Bill Watterson is a genious.
Rusty 06/18/2002
I tend to empathize with the adults, simply because I find Calvin to be insipid and way too immature. His disrespect towards authority and his childish antics are breads and circuses for the overactive imagination this cartoon kid has. Hobbes is a bit of an enabler too, but at least he's not as loony as Calvin.
benfergy 04/09/2002
This is the type of comic strip that can appeal to anyone. A lot of the stuff is just plain funny, other stuff is very deep.
cqpenguin 03/06/2002
Without a doubt one of the top two comic strips of all time. It runs neck and neck with The Far Side. I glance at the comics occasionally now, but it seems like such a wasteland with these two strips gone.
The Waffler 01/09/2002
The best strip in the history of comic strips. Bill Watterson combined humor, social commentary, and wit into this classic. I still miss reading it in the daily paper. Thankfully, I have several of the anthologies, which are still entertaining.
couchpotato 12/28/2001
Greatest comic strip in history. Of all time. Snoopy's not even close. Imaginative, funny, brilliant, slightly educational, and it's always cute how they never do resolve the issue if Hobbes is either a figment of Calvin's imagination or a doll that magically comes to life when he's alone with Calvin. I prefer the latter. It's more fun that way.
CrazedPenguin 12/28/2001
Wonderful strip, tells things like it is, and yet still manages to appeal to older readers, and make good points about the world around us. Note-Remember, C+H was never franchised. Anything with them on it's illegal, sans the comic itself.
Lord of the Waves 10/21/2001
i have every calvin and hobbes book. i love this comic. how a 6 year old is soarticulate but incredibly bad at evrything else makes it so incredible. it brings back memories of good times past. his little fantasies like spaceman spiff and tracer bullet make everyone instantly love this comic. how could you not with a cat who represents the philosopher thomas hobbes who hated all people much like hobbes except for the chicks!
The_Decockster 10/01/2001
Hilarious! Calvin is so funny... and he's really smart, too!
Potch1214 09/18/2001
Brilliant when around, ended too soon. Now these stupid tee-shirts with C & H smoking pot are all we get. A sad legacy to a very good strip.
MedgarEvers 09/12/2001
There was lots of humor I could understand in "Calvin and Hobbes" when I was younger, and there are things I missed then that are funny to me now. Calvin's snowman masterpieces, Spaceman Spiff & Stupendous Man episodes, wild wagon rides filled with philosophical pondering (something I can enjoy now that I couldn't understand when I was younger), picking on Susie, bugging his mom, giving his Dad the stats on how his fathership is going, writing school reports, doing science experiments with his cardboard box--- it's all so classic & so amusing. And Hobbes was always there with him. I'll never grow tired of "Calvin and Hobbes". Heck, Calvin has a better vocabulary than most people I know!
Andrew Gilmore 09/01/2001
The best comic strip in the past 50 years.
Mat Mann 07/27/2001
This was my son's favorite cartoon, and after reading one of his C & H books, I could see why. Great, good humor that is sorely needed in a veritable desert of bad taste and just plain not-funniness these days!
afterglow70 06/20/2001
I am so sick of seeing the Calvin look alike on every car in America peeing on a car symbol. I used to like this strip, but now, I am sick of seeing it.
liddlebopeep 06/06/2001
Calvin and Hobbes' simple yet honest premise of an adventurous boy with a stuffed tiger for an imaginary friend makes for great comic reading. Calvin's pranks and hijacks on his parents and especially Susie always manages to make me laugh. I can so relate to Calvin when I was his age: hating school, shrugging off homework and constantly getting into mischief! I've never been as attached to a comic strip character as I've been to both Calvin and Hobbes and am thus dissapointed with the discontinuation of their comic strip in the dailies. Please bring them back!
pikachan 05/23/2001
This is a very funny comic strip. I never saw them in my newspaper. I only read the collection bokks.
JonWeHo 01/27/2001
Greatest comic strip ever. I miss it.
UHGrad 01/16/2001
Absolutely the very best. You can't get any better than this strip. I concur with Shafty 100%!
jesterr 12/19/2000
Peanuts and Calvin leave us...Nancy remains...Life ain't fair!
slukster 09/19/2000
Along with Peanuts, the greatest comic strip of all time. Also along with Peanuts, the most missed strip.
Spiralingmarce 08/30/2000
I was completely crushed when Bill Watterson quit doing Calvin and Hobbes. It had been around longer than I could remember and it was my favorite comic. I love Calvin.
Shafty 08/09/2000
This has to be the best comic strip of all time. Lots of great humor, positive messages always underlying the storylines and the friendship between Calvin and Hobbes is one for us all to strive for. I remember following the comic strip one week or so when the two found a wounded raccoon and tried to bring it back to recovery. That particular series of comic strips is still stuck in my head from over 10 years ago. Strange how little things like that stick in your head and have such long-lasting impacts on your life. The imagination and seeing life through the eyes of a young boy was always such a great way to start my day. I was so sad when I read that Bill Watterson was hanging up the pen and was no longer creating Calvin & Hobbes, silly how some lines on paper can affect you so much.
Wiggum 05/16/2000
Calvin and Hobbes (along with The Peanuts and The Far Side) is one of the best comic strips of all time. Unlike most other cartoons, C&H seems to be weathering the test of time with ease. I've read the the first compilation book about 10 times, but if I picked it up right now it could still make me laugh. Bill Watterson's creativity is responsible for two of the most real, compelling, entertaining comic characters ever brought to black-and-white life, which is an even more impressive feat when you consider the fact that Hobbes is a stuffed animal. C&H is an enduring tribute to the power of imagination and the unique perspective of childhood. It was great getting a new one each day, and I really miss it.

Dependently funny!
core5979om 05/09/2000
Bill Waterson's creation, Calvin and Hobbes was an adventure into the soul of the human race. His use of humor and cartoon drawings to create social commentary made this comic strip an icon of modern culture.
artbuf 05/09/2000
Hilarious. My favorite was the discussion of why old photograph's are black and white, and new photograph's are color.
SamIAm 05/09/2000
Calvin and Hobbes are hilarious..My favorite cartoon of all time. Definitely a classic due to the devilish Calvin and his unlikely companion, Hobbes.
PoorOldEdgarDe rby 05/08/2000
No, no, no you can't do no better than this. Calvin and Hobbes is as good as it gets. The creme de la creme. The Everrest of cartooning. Always original, always hilarious, always something to look forward to and always filled with crazy hijinks by that little rascal Calvin and it mischevious tiger Hobbes. Perfect!
upchuck 05/08/2000
Comic Strip for all times...several generations should enjoy this one.
Munson 05/08/2000
One of the only comic strips that was laugh out loud funny.
magellan 05/07/2000
Hilarious. One of the few "precocious youngster" comics / tv shows / movies that doesn't annoy me. Hobbes is a comic genius.
