Why isn't this show #1? I mean, this show covered all of the topics that were considered risque back then!!!

Very funny but also iconoclastic, this show went where no show went before.Todays risque and politically incorrect programs all owe their existance to All in The Familys constant battles with the censors.

All in the Family 5

'All In the Family' is one of the best tv shows ever, hands down. It offers comedy and so much more. It is a microcosmic reflection of life: people (all in a family, hence the name) of very different worldviews trying to get along (or not) while living in close proximity. The show is brilliant in that it shows realistic characters with very believable and human flaws. Even the ones you agree with are flawed, and the show does a great job subtly revealing the inner life of each character. There are no one-dimensional characters.

So un-Policticly Incorrect, it's a classic. The cast members were all great actors. Classic storylines. Writing was stupendous. Still funny all these years later.

probably the greatest show in television history. the show is still entertaining today and each of the four main characters was well crafted and much deeper than they appeared on the surface.

It was actually two shows: (1) a rib-tickling comedy where Archie and Edith knew how to make us laugh; (2) a poorly-disguised attack by Norman Lear on any traditional or Christian values. If Mr. Lear and others like him were on the correct side of the issues, they would not need to use misrepresentations to push their causes. Archie Bunker is not a true example of a Christian, a Republican, a World War 2 vet, or anything else the left-wingers dislike. The Norman Lears of this nation are the real bigots.

The first season was exelent but then it jus got boring season 1 100% s 2 78% s 3 64 % s 4 45 % s 5 34 % the rest is 0 %. This is because it got too racist vand origanal for example the meathhead joke got way too boring afterthe first season. The racist jokes were funny in the first season but then after awhile it got way too annoying and boring and kind of mean.

The theme song to this show merits a one star alone...but I will be fair by rating the show itself. It was horrible...not funny in anyway...and as others have said before me...Archie was extremely negative and it got so tiring after awhile...if I want to hear whining negativity....I wouldn't watch tv, instead I would visit people I know that are like that...

You either liked this show or hated it. Many people couldn't handle Archie's biggot attitude and hated this show. I believe this show really open American's eyes to just how ignorant biggots are and made people look at their own prejudices. Great show!

This show was great for a few years, because it covered relevant topics like Vietnam, Watergate, and racism. Over the years the quality declined;it became like a joke that was funny the first time you heard it and then was run into the ground.

A great show, always laughed when the word sex or something to do with it came up and Archie would go crazy..he did'nt want to hear about such things in his house. I can remember my best friend's mom doing the same thing, just like Archie she would hear that word on a TV show and run across the room to change the channel!

All In The Family was and still is one of my all time favorite shows. They got away with topics and actions back then that people wouldn't even blink an eye to today. They hit on every day topics and the worst part is that there are STILL people like Archie Bunker even in todays world. One of the main things that show did was show how alot of people were and still are. Maybe not to Archie's extreme, but that all depends on which State you go to. I have an uncle who thinks along the same line as Archie so that type of bigotry still exists. He may not be as boisterous as Archie but the mentality is there. A great show nonetheless.

Contrary to what the rightwing droolers have posted here, AITF did get to some important issues, the most salient being that most of those Archie Bunker type, WWII vets were threatened, insecure idiots who were terrified of the changing world and incapable of changing with it. Perhaps the droolers who attack Norman Lear aren't old enough to remember those days when the WWII mongoloids staunchly supported that illegal, immoral and unnecessary exercise in carnage known as the Viet Nam war. Or how millions of the moronic Greatest Generation dragged their feet regarding, or were totally resistant to civil rights for black Americans and the enpowerment of women. In this, Archie Bunker wasn't a parody as much as he was a fairly accurately etched type. And many of those troglodytes of that Pinhead Generation still don't get it nearly 30 years later. The real problem is that these idiots have spawned another generation of nonthinking, insensitive and parochial dimbulbs who display the same short-sighted and deluded values and consequently make up a significant portion of the constituency that voted for George W. Bush. Frightening. So Archie Bunker is still with us to a certain extent, when that bigot should have been sent to a well deserved grave three decades ago.

The show (written and produced by liberals) gave the false message that conservatives are bigots. Of course, some are but just as many liberals are prejudiced as well (in different ways).

A television program with important social messages--in an era that needed to hear them. The bald-faced bigotry and intolerance of Archie was satirically (and effectively) exposed, without letting us forget that he was human. Truly cutting edge television...thank you, Norman Lear.

I used to take this show for granted as a period piece and could never really get into it, but I happened to be up one night and the local station was showing a rerun of it, so I thought "what the heck, I'll watch it". I did, and I've been hooked, so for the past month or so I've been getting up early whenever I can to watch "All In the Family". The show was already history by the time I was born, but I love it today as much as people did 30 years ago. And it still has a lot to say about politics and society..except for some references to Watergate and Vietnam, it still has a lot to say to contemporary viewers. It's also interesting to watch it and take note of the ground it broke, like when Archie swears I think "hm, so that was one of the first times the word 'damn' was said on TV..I wonder just how shocking that was back in 1971" and so on. And as for the comedy- very funny stuff. No specific moments come to mind, but it always makes me laugh as well as think. Carroll 'O Connor's timing and facial expressions are pricelessly funny, as is Edith's naïvete. I should also point out, to the people who criticize the show for being racist, that it wasn't racist. It was SATIRIZING racism and bigotry. If the show were racist, it would CONDONE Archie's views, but instead Archie was always presented as a FOOL for his ignorance and prejudice. Anyway- The later episodes weren't quite as good as the first five or so years, but on the whole- good acting, good writing- altogether a quite polished well-done series of episodes constituting an all-time television classic! R. I. P. Mr. 'O Connor.

Carroll O'COnnor is the best lead actor in a comedy ever, and while Valerie Harper of Rhoda is the best lead actress ever, Jean Stapleton is very close behind. This show had it all: laughs, realism, intelligence, and chemistry. It may have been a little too loud for the faint of heart, but, then again, so is life.

This show was way ahead of its time. In fact, some of the show's dialogue is still risque stuff today. It will always be a bona fide classic show. The political and ethnic overtones will make you mad, make you laugh, but it will always make you think. Carroll O' Connor was born for the role of Archie Bunker. We'll miss him.

This show changed the course of television history. Not saying that I am fan of racism, or excessive swearing, but what I liked about this show was that it made it alright for television comedy to discuss real social issues. It took complex social problems, and put them in a format that the average American could understand. Ultimately, what happened was it made it okay for the more family oriented shows of my time to deal with issues involving sex, drugs, and violence. In the 1950s, you would have never seen these important topics discussed on family comedy. All In the Family changed that.

I think that All in the family was a hillarious show. It did all the things that other shows were too afraid to do. It explored the reality of life and made a joke out of it. It also showed how rediculous racism was and a lot of people could relate to it. Plus it was funny. And Carroll O'connor is a very lovable jerk.

I LOVE All In The Family. It is one of my all-time favourite shows. I started watching it when I went off to college and it cheered me up when I was homesick and now I can't get enough of it. Archie's character showed how people can't be ignorant and not know it and Edith was so understanding. Mike fought for what he believed in and Gloria was the super cool fem chick.

This was once one of my favorites. To this day, it remains a groundbreaking show with plenty of redeeming value on a number of levels. Overall, pretty good acting, and the ability to make comedy out of controversial subjects. However, in the last few years, I think this show has worn on me. I just don't find it as funny as I once did, and all the yelling just doesn't appeal to me anymore. Not my cup of tea, especially for 11 PM (which is the time slot in which it currently airs on Nick at Nite).
