The show was very groundbreaking for its time. I enjoyed it very much as a teenager in the 80's. Bill Cosby is a comedic genius.

It was good in the begining. By the end it was terrible. They added a truly annoying female character near the end of the show that could barely speak english. Maybe it was ebonics.

(Flips to another channel) (Flips to Line 1 and turns on DVD player) (Skips through the advertisement and gets right to the feature)
CheckmateDD 04/11/2007
There was only one redeeming quality about this show. It portrayed an intact Black family that wasn't stereotypically "poor". Lisa Bonet was a little hottie also. My biggest complaint was that ballbuster of a wife, Claire Huxtable. She was much too sanctimonious! That's one show I refuse to watch in re-runs. Too much Brady Bunch stuff. Another show that was too sugary sweet.
Jeremy00081 09/18/2006
Those Cosbys made me wonder if the Brady bunch got a tan and decided to make another TV show, because they were pretty cheezy at times. Bill always made it worthwhile, though. Pretty funny stuff.
CanadaSucks 07/24/2006
Harmless 80's fluff. . .some funny moments but suffered from typical unbelievable sit-com scenarios. . .
trebon1038 07/24/2006
I rate this show very high on the all time best sit com list.....it had family values, humor, and was always a good show.
Limpin' Trenchfoot 07/24/2006
Apart from Lisa Bonet, there was little to recommend this frequently sentimental tosh. It was way too cosy and the humour lacked any bite.
Bassface 06/22/2006
I think this show is pretty cool. I usually don't watch it though unless there isn't anything else on. I'll watch full house or family matters over the cosby show (all 3 come on about the sametime now days). I always noticed how it was about a black family in the 80's that took place in NEW YORK and thought to myself "this is a positive show for african americans, but unrealistic". Realisticly Theo would have been very pressed to gang bang, do drugs etc...yet they never addressed any of this on the show.
badbearduke 05/15/2006
yuuuuuuuukkkkkk!I get acid reflux every time I go to a channel, and its on. It was horrible when it was on primetime, even more on reruns! one of my top ten WORST shows!
X Factor Z 03/17/2006
Why I hated this so so much, why it could have been so much better...Claire Huxtable was such an arrogant, self righteous super B*TCH!!!!! Probably the one TV charecter out of them all that I hated the most!!!!
Bird808 03/01/2006
During a time when there was limited positive African-American role models on TV shunning the stereotypical images of prostitutes, pimps, gang-bangers, troublemakers, no ambition, unruly children with no morals, I would say "The Cosby Show" came out at a perfect time to show not just America, but the world that YES, black people can be Lawyers and Doctors, YES our children can go on to college and don't roam the streets all hours of the night, NO we don't all talk in slang and can speak good English. For those of us who were a fan of the show we watched Claire, Cliff and their children; Sandra, Denise, Theo, Vanessa and Rudy grow-up and extend their family units and they were not perfect, but it remained positive tackling issues of drug abuse, going to your parents if you have a problem, being proud of who you are no matter what social structure your from and of course parents watching their children move onto college. I praise Bill Cosby for taking these steps to ensure that the show achieved what it set out to achieve and had positive role-models and a good family structure without compensating for ratings by feeding the media negative images of what they wanted to see of black people.
deadonthemoney 02/17/2006
if it had been made 10 years later there would have been interracial dating.
BlueOrchid 02/06/2006
You gotta love Cosby for that one.
brian j 02/02/2006
don't like this show, however I was a big fan of Bill Cosby when he was on I Spy. He was perfect for this part...later on I don't know what happened..he just got stupid.
gamerman 02/02/2006
I like this show, but they aren't realistic. No family in the world is that perfect! The kids never did anything wrong, but their friends were always in trouble. One episode Theo had weed but it wasn't his, it was his friend's weed. On another episode, two girls were jealous of Vanessa because she lived in a big house, so they jumped her. Vanessa told her parents that she beat up the two jealous girls, that's not realistic! The Huxtables are the perfect, and since Vanessa beat up two girls, I guess the Huxtables all have blackbelts in karate!
whamsabi 12/19/2005
The Cosby Show as good, but now I really do not like it as much. Cosby gets way with a lot. They always gang up on Theo's. Theyparents are never wrong. They are not flawed. That irritates me. I never see them You are telling me the kids are always wrong. Denise dropping out of College in the beginning of season 5 was really partially their fault. They forced her to go Hillman. They uses their Grandparents to get her to go. They should feel guilty, but no it is always the kids fault! The kids are really not funny. They had some good shows, but others that made me shake my head. This show has not held up when I was younger like Family Matters has or the Simpsons. I think Everybody Hates Chris in it's first episode is better.
Blooeyz2001 12/01/2005
I absolutely DETEST this show & Bill Cosby. This swill has aged about as well as the horrendous clothing & hairstyles on it. I never understood what was so hilarious about Cosby. There isn't anything funny about a grown man rolling his eyes, jutting out his big behind, making dumb faces & noises, & acting stupid. He is an overrated hack. He is also arrogant with a holier-than-thou attitude which is a major turn-off. This show was sugar coated slop. Lisa Bonet was dead weight, with no personality or presence whatsoever. The premise was nonsense, & the situations were unrealistic. Cosby was as believable as a doctor as Bea Arthur was as an Italian-American on "The Golden Girls" (but at least she was funny). It amazes me that this garbage stayed on the air so long. It must have been it's time slot.
jazzackfl 09/26/2005
Not Just the best Black-Show, The Cosby show is Best show IN the History of the World. Even in Present day when re-runs of old episodes air 4 hours a day. It's still hilarios. And Not Sappy and Corny Like Family Matters or Full House.
kattwoman 05/13/2005
it was a pleasant show that taught family values and entertained you at the same time. there were issues they confronted like theos dyslexia that educated people.it also promoted education which was a strong point in the show
texasyankee 03/29/2005

Why 'The Cosby Show' is so maligned today is just so unexplainable (and downright maddening). What is so wrong about seeing African Americans (and other ethnic communities) successful? Do all shows portraying African Americans have to follow the sterotype of having them live in the projects or slums? If anyone agrees to this stereotype, they ought to look at themselves in the mirror and see what real garbage is. In short, 'The Cosby Show' was about family, its moral values, and personal responsibility. And what better father figure on television than Bill Cosby, a REAL MAN who continually preaches the virtues of personal responsibility and self-sacrifice to ALL communities. It is a travesty to see or hear the few idiots whom continually denounce this show when it, instead, ought to be seen for its positive portrayals. 'The Cosby Show' was one of the greatest and the respect it deserves is long overdue, regardless of the Maxine Waterses of the world.

Trust me. This review is better off left unsaid. Just trust me on this one.
Willie A. 11/28/2004
The Cosby Show was a great breakthrough sitcom. Instead of depicting the African American family as a poor family in the projects or the slums of our nations cities, it gave the main characters Cliff and Claire good high paying jobs. That's why the show was such a sucess. To the people who hated the show, you have to look at it from a different viewpoint. Love the re-runs on Nick@Nite.
sfalconer 11/02/2004
A television classic if not a little unrealistic. I mean no family gets a long that well. The supporting cast was always great and kids would come and go and the show would never miss a beat. Until the annoying cousin and all her iritating friends showed up. That is when it Jumped the Shark but fortunatly it did not last long after that.
hevensgurl 07/28/2004
I alway enjoyed watching this show and was a very young child when this first aired. The moral lesson Dr. Huxtable taught are still prevalent today..A very good show and fares well in reruns. I think the best part are seeing some of the fashions and styles the kids had and reminding me of how everyone dressed when I was a kid...

One of the top family shows ever!

This show really had no mening.

I realize that I'm probably in the minority on this one, but this show just really really really annoyed me.
kinkykinks 03/13/2004
a show that made dysfunctional families feel bad because it was so goody goody two shoes and the al bundy came in and kicked his ass in the ratings!
AndrewScott 02/24/2004
The #1 rated show for much of the 80's, with an appeal that captured broad demographics. The warmth of the show is something people of all ages enjoyed seeing. Bill Cosby clearly had a gift for interacting with his youngest co-stars, although I would argue that the best chemistry of the show was between Cosby and Phylicia Rashaad. Some may complain that the show had all the realism of The Brady Bunch, though I see no real crime with modeling family dynamics at their best.
Rufieo30us 02/17/2004
What to say about Bill Cosby, the father of the 1980's? I am impressed, I am a better person because I have heard of him, I am a more loving person because of the great Bill Cosby! Bill has a heart, has a great love and respect for our country and trying to teach good healthy family vaules to the next generation. Sandra the eldest daughter, Denise the fashion gal, Theo the trouble maker who was later matured into a great young man, vanessa the tattle talier or should i say from Mr. Bill THE INFORMER and last not but least Rudy the sweet and cute of the whole bunch: these kids represented a great bunch of kids who taught us as well as us learning from them. I have a great love for the huxtable family! They sure helped america during the 1980's!
1JohnDoeFan 01/21/2004
I really never watched this when I was a kid. But, now that I have on Nick at Nite it is extremely pleasant, and Bill Cosby is funny as hell in it!!!
VirileVagabond 11/29/2003
The Cosby Show was great through its earlier seasons. The show portrayed an African-American family is a positive light, with professional parents and agreeable children. The comedy was benign and relied on family oriented jokes and situations, and there isn't anything wrong with that. Unfortunately Bill Cosby eventually took over the show's creative control, the series got too political, and ultimately became a retread star search for old musicians. Injecting too much politics into entertainment has resulted in the death of many television programs, and The Cosby Show was not immune. The Cosby Show was originally broadcast from 1984 to 1992.
brianjoseph 11/13/2003
A terrible show and I really like Bill C. If you watch his old stuff from the 60's you will really laugh..however today he's not funny anymore..(maybe the death of his son has something to do with this..felt so sorry for him..his son was a fine young man). Anyway still enjoy his old shows..especially I Spy.
President -X-D 10/17/2003
Bill cosby's family humor was top notch at first, but the show ran out of gas trying to show "upwardly mobile" blacks guest starring in most later episodes. Cosby apparently was trying to give alot of little known black performers a forum (and to be fair, he did use hispanics, asians, and a few whites here and there). The show was at it's funniest when Cosby unleashed his bottomless well of "family humor", but lost alot of points with me when the show expanded into unrealistic portrayals of "life" outside the Huxtable home. The Huxtables were about as realistic as the Bradys; Cosby should have recognized that and kept the family in their own microcosm.
MarjorieB 10/17/2003
I always associated with Rudy because we were the same age. But it was always a good show.
kolby1973 08/12/2003
It is one of those shows where I can see WHY other people would enjoy it, but I didn't care for it and I rarely watched it in the 80's. I occasionally catch it on tv now, and I still just don't get the hype. Overrated. I do think Bill Cosby is a wonderful comedian however. A cool guy.
Jenny Drury 08/12/2003
This show is awful. N@N has aired it to death! It was an ok show when it first was aired. I refuse to watch it now, because N@N can't get enough of it. I don't see what's so great about this show. I give it only 1 star. I can't believe it even made the top 20. I would think it would have been rated lower.
heidikay 08/05/2003
One of the best comedies ever. I really love the Cosby Show. The fact that it has been in syndication forever exhibits this fact. I like this show because it is funny, wholesome, and just plain good.
DKat89 06/26/2003
I loved it before I had a child, and watch the reruns now with my daughter (she's 13). The show's timeless, and anytime you want to get away from the latest crap on tv being passed off as "family entertainment", tune in to WGN or Nick at Nite and watch Cliff and the gang...
lotr417 05/28/2003
I LIVE FOR NICK AT NITE so I can watch shows like this one. Why can't they make TV shows like this one anymore? Who doesn't like the Cosby Show? How is it possible to not like the Cosby Show? Always funny, no matter how many times you see it.
khaoss15 05/20/2003
I washted The Cosby Show faithfully when it first aired on NBC thought all 8 seasons. Bill Cosby is a genious and you will never find a funner or more wholesome family show on television again. Kudos!!!
RebelYell1861 05/11/2003
Not every episode is funny, but some of 'em are hilarious.
lukskywlkr. 05/10/2003
This was never a laugh out loud comedy for me, but there were some funny episodes. I usually made it a point to watch it, though, if only to warm me up for Cheers later on Thursday nights.

The best show ever that will always remind me of my childhood!
Southga 04/10/2003
Cosby show was an unique portrayal of black humor and an ambitious illustration of a successful, black family. This series should be remarked as one of, if not, the best series of all time.
