MASH was a mix of the best comedy since the three stooges because of the quick lines of Hawkeye and every character had a different way of making us laugh with out a doubt the GREATEST show that was ever on TV

Like "All in the Family", MASH was a show that made people laugh--AND think. What a novel concept is in today's television world, where we are fed a continuous diet of raunchy, scatological "humor" and, like Skinnerian rats, feel compelled to laugh because "it's supposed to be funny"...

A terrific show -- well, after Trapper John was replaced by B.J. I like how the characters grew and how the viewer could actually come to care about them.

MASH is truly a classic TV show. It lasted a few years longer than it should have, but the earlier seasons are some of TV's finest moments. It had an origional setting and interesting, likeable characters.

It was hot stuff when it came out, but seems dated now. Interestingly, the book it was based on was written by a right-wing war lover (the pseudonymous Richard Hooker) who thought the Korean War, or at least his part of it as a MASH surgeon, was FUN. The book's sophomoric bully-boy attitude carried over into Robert Altman's film, which was received as an anti-war statement partly because at the time it came out, anything that viewed the military with a jaundiced eye was automatically assumed to be a critique of the Vietnam War; and partly because in Altman and Robert Duvall's hands the character of Frank Burns, the "regular-army clown" conceived by Hooker solely as a sendup of pompous bureaucrats, became a symbol for the stupidity of the pro-Vietnam contingent. The TV folks took this further, changing Hawkeye from Donald Sutherland's screw-you anarchist to Alan Alda's bleeding-heart liberal. The result, seen in retrospect, was often too preachy. A little more anarchy and a little less "niceness" might have actually made its message stronger, especially for modern audiences.

This show is my nightly giggle. At the end of a long day - there are 2 ep.'s on and at least one of them has me in stitches. Good writing, good portrayal, a nice variety of topics and takes. It seems to me it was a pioneer of how to make your show different and still appealing and keep ratings and viewership up - all while maintaining it's true integrity and points. Way to go!

I know that doctors are very intelligent, but only in a writer's imagination do people talk and think this fast. I felt that it was fake, and that the this show is obviously written. It just wasn't believable. It wasn't real except when Loretta Swit and her gifts took over.

I think this show should be in the top 5 shows, it really is a classic, the one liners and the epsoids where the families met, and the reporter interviewed the people as they worked. I do wish the final show would not have had "Hawkeye"have a break down. But this is another show we always watched.

MASH was an awesome show...the balance of comedy and drama in one episode was like being on a roller coaster ride. Probably one of the few shows to successfully transition from the big screen to television. The cast was fantastic...and even when there were departures, new and different characters were introduced for us to get to know. A great show that holds up well today.

great show! Even though it did go a little overboard on the drama toward the end, like th episode "Yes sir, that's our baby" where an abadonded baby is left in the camp. But all-in-all, it was, and still is a great show. I watch it almost every day, and I still love it. It had great writing, great acting, and a great ensemble cast that worked great together. I still get sad every time I watch the final scene in "Abbysynia Henry" (thhe one where Col. Blake was killed) when Radar walks into the O.R. & announces his death, even though I've seen the episode over & over again, and anyone who says they don't feel the same way about that scene is a LIAR! A great series!

One of the best shows ever! I thought it was hilarious initially, but it improved as the years went by and the characters matured and become more human. True, Hawkeye was a little too perfect, maybe, but that's a small flaw in an incredible series. I thought Larry Linville's character was the weakest, made too easy a target but, once he left the show, the rest of them moved ahead. I've seen all the episodes at least once, some of them many times, and I still look forward to watching it.

Granted that this show was cancelled the year I was born, but even as reruns, it's an amazing series! I've never seen a better cast...or a better group of people. They really brought their characters to life. Even those we loved to hate were incredibly good at the roles they played! If I had it my way, the show would STILL be running! :)

Started off in the same Vain as the original Altman film then took a melodramatic turn once Alda took the creative wheel. The theme song was titled "Suicide Is Painless" which lets the audience know that there's something more to this show than silly hijynx. The show often is mistaken for an hour long drama by younger viewers because it was able to get so many storylines in a thirty minute format. Harry Morgan was a lot of fun but I always preferred Blake. Excuse me while I have an extra dry martini.

Poor Frank Burns left the show because of Hawkeye's ruthless wit. It's interesting how well this show balanced the hardships and drama of war and good comedy with a good cast of unique characters.

Though it went off the air before I was even born, I consider this show the greatest ever made. It's a cultural icon! The first seasons, with the hilarious Trapper McIntyre and Henry Blake were comic perfection. It's argued that the show went downhill, but I disagree. Frank's departure was just what the show needed to mature. Not to get old and stale, it matured into something better, a true cross between drama and comedy. I feel the complex, brilliant and delightfully pompous Charles Winchester was the best character of them all. Sure, the show had its flaws...too often, it became the Hawkeye Pierce Guide to Moral Behavior. Nonetheless, this is a show that dared to be three-dimensional, go above the normal sitcom formula.

My favorite tv show of all time. consistently funny, yet many times serious. Incredible, considering how long it was on the air, and that they were always limited to their location. they couldn't just move to a different environment to have a "special" episode. i do disagree with a couple of the comments i've read. I feel MASH was best with BJ and Potter on the show. also, the final episode was incredible and moving. because we got to know the characters, you kind of felt like you were losing a friend (i know that sounds corny). also, characters did change. Hot Lips became a character you could see as not being as serious and stern. also, Klinger stopped trying to escape from the army, and despite not wanting to be there, was caring and reliable. a great tv show.

It was at times funny, but the cast tried too hard and the scripts don't blend togther with the strange plots surrounding it. It's for those who can handle shows that have extremly adult humor.

This is sort of a way to forget the stress of the day. I watch it before I go to school and I found out that I'm less likely to get mad at someone if I've just been laughing alot. My friends at West Middle would tell you that I go in to school with a good attitude and am able to laugh at most of what is thrown in my face.

I would have given it a 5-Great, but the show went downhill precipitously(sp?) after Larry Linville left. That was the final straw after losing McLean Stevenson(terrible career move), and Wayne Rogers. The replacements just couldn't pull it off as well, plus it became more PC after that point, as Alda exercised more control.

I don't understand how anyone can deny the comedy of M*A*S*H. Hawkeye's one liners along with Henry Blake's lack of command made this show a classic. It did lose it's punch as characters changed, but just watch the first three seasons to see why this show is a gem.

This is and always will be one of the best shows in television history. It walked that thin line between drama and comedy and somehow always made you laugh, even during the most traumatic times. Radar, Hawkeye, Hot Lips, Frank were all classic and hilarious characters. I still enjoy watching the reruns.

The show was O.K., but every character was one-dimensional. Frank, Klinger, Houlihan, Blake et al., never ever changed, never seemed to step out of their pre-determined roles, never grew. I could live with that (70's sitcom and all that) but I couldn't stand Hawkeye. If you weren't Hawkeye you were wrong. Pierce never made a bad call and that annoys me.

This is absolutely, positively one of the greatest TV shows of all-time. There are a number of reasons for this. First, while it is deservedly considered a sitcom, MASH had more poignant moments than any dramas in TV history. Anyone who saw the episode where Radar announced the crash of Henry Blake's plane in the O.R. is lying if they say it didn't bring tears to their eyes. Second, as evidenced in this scene, the acting was incredible. These actors were able to show tremendous emotion even with surgical masks on. Third, MASH was able to not only succeed, but thrive despite consistent cast turnover. Fourth, MASH was not afraid to take chances. Whether it was a faux-documentarty in black and white or an entire program with a clock in the upper corner, episodes of MASH were different than shows before it. Lastly, it had the most memorable theme song of all-time. All of this adds up to a show for the ages.
