the first two seasons this show ruled, but eventually it became a caricature of itself.

Man I used to look forward to Friday nights. This show ruled.

Boring storylines, but cool music and hilarious clothes.

This was one of my favorite shows. I worked as an extra on several episodes of Miami Vice when it was being filmed. It was a cool show to work on and the entire cast was very nice also. I was also lucky enough after the show ended to get my hands on some of the props from the show, such as the pillow with the Marlin fish on it that sat on Sonny Crocketts boat, one of Don Johnson's dark blue t-shirts, a football, a briefcase that was used in a drug bust scene on the show, a fake machine gun that they used in the show, some of the ashtrays and coffee mugs from the Miracle Man episode plus one of the big signs that they used in the episode about the Nazi's storming the Jewish Defamation League meeting and a wolf mask that is painted in all different colors from another episode. I still have these items today and they are put away safely. I had alot of fun working on this show and meeting all of the cast. Working with all of them was great. I never missed an episode of the show when it was on either. At that time I also lived not far from where it was filmed at Ivan Tors studios in North Miami, Florida. I have great memories from those days :)

Those two guys were about as convincing as Trent Lott's apologies when he was finally outed as a life-long racist. Philip Michael Thomas totally disappeared from the public eye after this crap went off the air, and for good reason: absolutely no talent or appeal. Johnson is a greasy, sleazy-looking sawed-off twerp with that annoying nasal whine. Really dig those plastic 80's styles. The plots on this show were ridiculous and far-fetched, the acting really terrible, the music heavy-handed. They tried to make Miami look really hip and sophisticated, when anyone who's been there in the last 15 years knows it's a phony and tiresome dump that caters to Eurotrash and South American lowlifes and is overrun with bottomfeeders of various dubious ethnic backgrounds. But it is amusing to look back on the popularity of this show to put one's pop culture perspectives in order: whoever tuned this junk in week after week had to be a real square in pathetic search of vicarious jollies.

A waste of airspace.

Certain things about it aren't realistic sure but when it came out it was groundbreaking stuff. Definately belongs in the TV hall of fame. I loved this show when it originally aired. I thought Don Johnson was great in it and so was philip michael thomas.

I have always loved Miami Vice and I always will. Although the police officer protrayal was "fantasy", it had everything: Good looking stars, great music; tropical scenery; nice character development and plots which involved both drama and a hint of comedy. Let me explain the "fantasy" remark above. Undercover police officers usually stay undercover and are not seen in other areas of police work--otherwise their covers would be blown. And of course, they don't wear $1000 silk/linen suits, either. But this was a fashion statement; and very trendy and new to TV in the 80s. There's a particular episode that aired in Miami Vice's first season. It was called "Milk Run". It's the first episode I ever saw and it hooked me. It was the first time I saw a show that didn't have the typical "happily ever after" ending. It moved me. The show declined, IMHO, in the later years but I never got tired of watching it.

I can still remember getting ready to go out on a Friday night with my friends . . . before we went anywhere, we had to watch Miami Vice at 10:00 p.m.! Sonny and Rico were always kicking butt, taking names and looking good while they did it. I watched only a few episodes recently, and fell back in love with Don! Miami Vice rocks!

MIAMI VICE not only defined the 1980's with fashion and music but made Miami. Miami today- all the glitz and glamour is because of the show. It put Miami on the map. The show was stylish, hot, and the music chosen for specific scenes was matched to perfection. There have been other cops shows but none can compare to Miami Vice. The writers did an excellent job with the storylines, the fashions Crockett wore made a fashion statement everywhere and Don became a sex symbol. The show indeed made an impact. I remember guys with the five o'clock shadow and the paster colored suits and wearing the shoes without socks. It was a popular show. Even the tourism industry knows that Miami Vice made Miami/South Beach famous. MIAMI VICE 4ever!!!!!!

THE BEST TV SHOW OF ALL TIME! It had the best actors, scripts and music of any show, past or present. Don Johnson is gorgeous along with being a terrific actor; Philip Michael Thomas is great, too, and these 2 men show what friendship/relationship is all about and they include the supporting players in this relationship. A terrific ensemble cast!

OK I admit it . . . I liked it then and I still like it. So they dress funny, so what? the outfits on "Friends" are going to look equally ridiculous in a few years. The music was good (how many eighties shows can you say that about?), the concept was innovative, and Don Johnson was really cute in those days.

“Saturday Night Fever”, “Charlie's Angels”, and “Miami Vice” – all support my theory that movies and TV shows that can easily thank fads and fashions for their very existence will NOT hold up well in the long haul. In other words, when white disco suits, shoes without socks, stubble beards and big hair died so did the significance of these and many other shows like them. The best they can do is serve to bring back memories of now thankfully bygone styles. But, if you loved them hang in there – all things hideous seem to have a nasty way of seeping back into the culture.

Miami Vice is an extremly mindless and boring show about 2 cops who drive a car, and you get dizzy just watching them, because when their driving the car, you see what they're seeing and that just not what you'd want to be seeing.
AndyC 01/15/2001
Like most old programs, it looks dated now. When it emerged it was fairly exciting and very stylish, and Jan Hammer's music set many scenes alight. Not one to re-watch now though, just buy the music.

great music terrible show

Rating this show in the context of the 80s, I would give it at least four stars. But, since it represents the best and worst of that time period, it hasn't aged well at all. How ridiculous do those guys look in the pastel suits? And the overly dramatic music, plots, and acting seem ridiculous now. But at the time, I remember really getting into it, even just when the drums would play during the opening credits and they'd show all those wild Miami scenes.
SamIAm 07/19/2000
Ugh, all the worst things of the 80's rolled into one boring, poorly wardrobed show.
magellan 07/19/2000
Maybe it wasn't so bad at the time, but watching it today is enough to make one cringe. This was bad television folks - you're just going to have to come to grips with it.
