Outstanding show. Great story lines and makes a person wonder how government is really ran.

TV shows should stay out of politics!

Unique. Courageous. Intelligent. One could almost say noble, but that's a bit much for *any* television show. Generally well-cast. One weakness: since the Republican takeover of the real-life (?) US government, WW has looked more like a liberal response to reality, a fantasy of the way things should be. Mind you, I *agree* with its politics, but sometimes the politics get in the way of the drama. For example, making Bartlett's Republican opponent a fathead anti-intellectual was a weak choice, and Bartlett's easy victory over him strained credulity. I mean, come on, look at who's really running Washington these days ...

TV doesn't get any better than this! There is enough material in each show for 3 ordinary shows!
BonsaiGreg 01/11/2003
Too bad politics and power isn't really handled like this. A little too liberal a slant on most issues, but what can one expect from Hollywood.
Fun4MaryJo 12/11/2002
Boring.
D.J. Power 12/09/2002
Will not be watching it anymore since Rob Lowe is leaving.
wendi1bird 11/27/2002
This show can be educational if you don't have a political background. (I learned what a filibuster (spelling?) was). My father, a republican, watches it every week. It is the ONLY non-news/stock television show he watches! That says a lot to me.
potomoc1957 10/30/2002
Excellent acting by an excellent crew. Not totally realistic, but this is TV. ;P)
TimBSDCA 10/12/2002
Does anyone else get the feeling that this program is really running focus groups for the Democratic Party!!!???

1 of the BEST shows ever!!

I've watched West Wing regularly since its first show and have yet to be disappointed. The casting is excellent, from the major roles to the guest actors. I find the plots gripping and even relatively believable (accepting that this is, after all, television and meant as entertainment). The writers manage to walk that very fine line, balancing serious, sometimes somber, topics with light touches along the way. Most of the characters have been allowed to grow and develop into three-dimensional characters with flaws and unexpected facets. I only hope this is a show that will remain on TV for a long, long time!
teachermom 05/09/2002
Never miss it. Ever. I'm just grateful for intelligent programming of any sort.

The West Wing is one of the best shows on television, now and ever. I think that television creators are starting to give the audience credit for being smarter than was previously thought. The West Wing is at the forefront of this new wave of tv that allows the audience to think about what they are watching. With a superb cast that (unlike many shows) are all equal to the task of what they do, and amazing writing, this show has become my favorite show ever.
Carmabaeji 04/07/2002
Sharp dialogue, tries to allow each character to have their own view point, eventually swaying them, and often me too. I am appaled at all the people who are giving the show because they don't like one character. Emily Proctor's seems to be the gas bag of choice at the moment. I think it's stupid to stop watching a show for one person who gets something like eight minutes on camera out of 46! I put up with Mandy for the first season and I still like the show.
KatMac 04/05/2002
I have been a 'West' addict since day 1. I love the pace, the dialogue, the acting...well everything! It reminds of those old Hepburn/Grant movies of the '30s and '40s. It's TV for grown-ups!! Keep up the great work!
West Wing_freak 01/13/2002
Television doesn't get any beter than this. Aaron Sorkin is a brilliant writer. The dialogue alone will have you enthralled. The cast is terrific; each actor adds a layer complexity to this already complex world. The characters are refrshing and the acting is top notch. And let's not forget the exquisite direction of Tommy Schlamme. After "Noel," I could not speak. It was that well-crafted. I bow to the altar that is The West Wing.
lorief 01/12/2002
This is the only show currently on TV that I absolutely hate to miss. I have seen all episodes, either when aired or on reruns, at least once. Martin Sheen himself is a good reason to watch, but the rest of the cast is equally good. Adding Stockard Channing as a regular this season was a great move; what a wonderful First Lady to play opposite a dream President. I'm not an American but would love to see the Bartlets either in the White House or here in Canada!
Rusty 01/06/2002
How I wish Josiah Bartlett were my President! Martin Sheen is very convincing in his role as a President with a conscience. Stockard Channing is phenomenal in her role as Abigail. This is television drama at some of its finest. Politics with a conscience. If only it was real life. Sigh...
jacalin 11/20/2001
I think this is a very good show one of the best in a long time
Zuraya 11/13/2001
at first i wasn't that interested in it.....but now im glued to the tv......although some of the dialogue is hard to understand it is still a really good show and deserves all the emmy's it gets.....and martin sheen makes an excellent president
SenorBeef 11/11/2001
It turns into liberal preach hour entirely too much. I mean, when you're looking for it, the propoganda is so obvious that they might as well be winking at the camera.
Sensei 10/23/2001
Great series, excellent acting especially Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe and Allison Janney. Something I have begun to look for in every episode... (and I must point out that I have little interest in art or cinematography).... is THAT Scene, where the lighting and props are perfect (eg. where President Bartlet is talking to the ghost of Mrs Landingham during a thunderstorm). Catch it on tape - and pause the moment.
callmetootie 10/21/2001
I like Martin Sheen, and he's great in this, but the supporting cast is quite dull if you ask me.
espo610 09/28/2001
Tremendous writing, excellent actors. I really look forward to this show.

A wonderful show, definitly addictive and some of the best acting/writing I have ever seen.

I never saw something that brilliant ! I am French. Just to say that the White House is far from my occupations (I would even say I don't care at all about everything that touches politics). I discovered The West Wing on a french channel, in French (not in original version, most french channels beleive that people are too stupid to see a program in the language it has been conceived for!), but happily it has been very well "doubled" (I'm not sure this is the correct word for it). And I discovered something I have never seen. I like series like X-Files and Ally Mc Beal, and find that Friends or ER are quite good shows. But I NEVER saw something like The West Wing. This is brillant (I fully support the scenarist strike : studios, pay them with everything you've got, THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING ESSENTIAL!), and moving. I wish to thank here everybody that permitted this show to exist : the wonderful scenarists, incredible actors, tremendous dialoguists and all the crew (even the financial ones) that permitted me to have this great feelings. Thank you all, then, and if somebody reads me and have never seen the show : WATCH IT AND ENJOY. Gilles

Best show on t.v.
singingstarlet 08/13/2001
This is the best show on television today, really ever!! I am obsessed! Rob Lowe is hot, but still manages to be taken seriously when not sleeping with call girls. Brad Whitford is great, we are all glad he lived through the shooting of his character Josh. John Spencer is great as the chief of staff. Martin Sheen and Richard Schiff are also wonderful. But my abbsolute favorite is Allison Janney. She is great!! CJ is a character for all women to look up to!! This is a GREAT show!!

Clintonesque show promoting liberal issues vs. entertainment.

My only 'must-see TV'. It's got it all: intelligence, wit, topical stories, all with strong characters and relationships.
klbro 06/13/2001
The West Wing is a extraordinary show with great and terrific actors and actresses as well as writers and producers. To cut it short, everyone who is involved in this show is extraordinary. The actors and actresses are wonderful and they can act!!!!! It is like Aaron Sorkin said at one of the award shows that each one of the main actors and actresses could possibly have their own show because they do a great job and they each give their 110% or more. My favorite is Bradley Whitford, but I like them all.
Christianviewe r 06/05/2001
The season finale was an insult to God, to me and to those who see a church, temple or mosque as a way to reach out to God with sincere faith. Your disgraceful insult in the National Cathedral shows contempt for a God who will not be mocked. I will never watch again. I had not missed an episode.
wdegain 05/28/2001
For allthis show is, it is also educational! The real nitty gritty of political life in Washington DC. They don't have to make anything up for this series, they just have to read the newspaper!I never miss a week.
TMK1977 05/25/2001
This is the BEST show on tv. Don't let anyone take it off the air, at least until I'm dead. Wednesday night would be a wasteland and I couldn't handle it. Martin Sheen could be doing anything and I would watch it. I've come to respect "Leo" as well as the rest of the cast. Please don't leave us loyal fans in limbo. Thanx

In the season finale of "West Wing" I saw a President struggling with telling the public about his battle with multiple sclerosis. In the midst of this issue was his private secretary who got hit by a car and died. Then there was the scene that showed an angry President who had words with God in a church and deeply offended me. His cursing tirade at God was insulting to me as a Christian. What also insulted me was that the President put out a cigarette right there on the floor of the church. Could he be even more disrespectful? When Martin Sheen appeared on various talk shows to speak about the season finale of “West Wing” nobody really bothered to ask him about that scene. Did it really hold no significance to anyone or do people just seem to think this is common and acceptable behavior? As a Christian I am offended by such actions for God is Holy and his church is to be treated with respect. Was this really the most effective way for Martin Sheen to portray a President’s anger about his secretary’s death and his personal health? By spouting off in a church, slandering and accusing God like he was personally responsible was a weak attempt to entertain an audience. “West Wing” producers and writers should be ashamed of themselves for including such a scene. I understand it is a television show, but portraying God like he is vindictive and accountable for such actions as letting someone die is farther from the truth! This is one viewer who won't be catching the show next season! To the producers, writers, actors, and whoever else is involved in making the show--you lost a great number of viewers! I'm quite certain that Christians everywhere will not watch your show next season.
The Gigi 05/23/2001
I am a Christian and a HUGE fan of this dynamic program. I have NO issue, biblically or morally with the President Bartlet character expressing his anger and frustration to God. The same thing was done several time in the scriptures. God doesn't say to not be angry. He gave us our anger. The Word says to not SIN in our anger. Yes, he was frustrated that he felt his 1 lie set a whole host of tragic events into motion. Who wouldn't in his shoes? Churches are just buildings. The real church is in the body of His faithful. The cigarette was symbolism. Have you never cursed your parent for chastising you?? The President was angry at his Father. All these protestations in the name of defending God are ridiculous! It's a tv show, people! And a very honest, real one. I find the show very timely, very compelling and cannot WAIT to "watch this!", as Leo said! Keep up the FINE work! I would LOVE to have a president with this much character and personality. I will miss Mrs. Langingham.

The white house we wish we had. hmmm...martin sheen could win if he ran...its not like it hasn't been done before......

West Wing has been my favorite show all year but I was horrified in 'Two Cathedrals' where the President spouted his anger at God at the altar of the church. The writing of this show is usually so crisp and fast paced, but this scene lasted an eternity. I understand the character's frustration with all the natural and man-made disasters he has encountered, but I feel it is awful that these summers months stretch ahead with this last scene in our minds. This man-of-conscience would have been more in character to turn with strength and humility to God. I want so much to continue to love and enjoy this show.

I love west wing! It is the only program I won't miss! It is intelligent, funny, and fast moveing!
missmauree 05/17/2001
I truly love The West Wing and have not missed a single episode. I tape it to watch again the next day! But..... The season ender really was not up to the fine quality of the show. I do not have a problem with the prez being angry with God as that is real life. Most of us have known someone who has had their faith shaken and, as a Catholic, it does not at all offend me as suggested by a previous post. That's not to say that I didn't think it was a truly stupid scene. But let's get to my REAL BEEF with last night's show! WHAT IS WITH THE COP ROCK GARBAGE. I felt ripped off! Was I watching some second rate MTV show? I sure hope the flavor of the show returns for the next season or I'll have to find another vice. Was Mrs. L truly a victim of the persuit of youth as has been reported? What a shame, dare I say MISTAKE, to axe her character. This coming from a youthful 36. I will keep my fingers crossed for the coming season!
Snuffy Smith 05/17/2001
Up until last night, my wife and I have always enjoyed West Wing. As a show, it offered a good entertainment value. We had been able to look past Mr. Sheen’s political ineptness; we had been able to look past the shows liberal undertones oozing from the scripting. However, the tirade monologue performed in utter blasphemy was a showstopper for us. They could have taken multiple paths at this to come to the same point but they did not. From writer, producer, actor, and executive, any of these could have said no to this scene and requested a different version. This was apparently not done. It was clear that their intention was to portray the anger and be as irreverent as humanly possible. It is one thing to shake your fist in the face of God in real life out of true anger and ask forgiveness, not right but at least understandable. What happened last night was something very different, this was pre-meditated. I can make pre-meditated decisions too, no more West Wing in my house.
