I have only really seen Series 4, and I'm hooked! It's believeable, gritty and very well-acted.
Vanilla_Tiger 08/19/2003
I was never an avid watcher to begin with but now I'm hooked. I don't believe this show was created to show the life of the average Italian-American (as Voter2004 is convinced) I think it is a good piece of raw drama that just so happens to deal with "the mob"....a term I think more than one ethnic group uses. I definately agree with BillyD.....reality shows like Temptation island should be frowned apon.....it's a pathetic excuse for couples to cheat on one another. I'm not Italian-American...and I'm not American either......seeing this show.....the last thing running through my mind was whether or not real Italian Americans were like this.....in fact in wasn't in my mind at all.

Too much of Tony's personal family, and therapy.
BorntoRock 05/29/2003
Who are we kidding? This is hands down the greatest Drama, maybe even TV show ever. It crosses every genre, continually surprises and often touches on the profound. Where else has contemporary life been examined in such a meaningful and artistic way, while still maintaining the highest aspects of entertainment? Great acting, directing and of course writing, what show even comes close?
Cat_Mom03 05/16/2003
It's good.

Tony still has yet to acquire an STD!!!! Boy, with all the f***** he does, who'd think he'd get herpes or something!
queen_kates79 04/20/2003
SO good. Refreshing and just wonderful.

Soprano's has a very tough challenge, to take the old world style mafia, the mafia language and codes of bahavior, and bring up to date to 30 or 40 years later. The times have changed, the attitudes have changed, but Tony Soprano, still stays the same. His do as I say, don't do as I do attitude are writter all over this psyhotic over the top husband and father. Whats strange is that most true Italian families, don't believe in a theratpist, in old world italian families, a saint,or priest was all that was needed to console a troubled mind. But, were talking todays Italian, most are getting fine educations, it is not the Italian style mafia of when I was growing up. Edie Falco's character is excellent as playing the ruefull wife of Tonly, she knows damn well that Tony is unfaithful, but she reacts to his authority. It's not about his politics, it's about the man he exudes himself to be. He is a mafia boss, with other characters like "Uncle Joe" "Paulie", he has the authority and he's going to make sure everybody understands whose the boss. His real rears are amock with pathose of people in his life that he cannot forgive or forget. He is highly delusional, and has enough doubts to last him a life time, but he is not in right mind to admit it. Edie Falco is good at playing his sultry wife, she never goes over the edge. That is good for viewers, because once she does that she'd lose her edge. The rest of the show is a macabre reminder, that gangsters don't play fair. The gangsters involved have made boo-boo's and thier going to pay the price. Somebody has to keep the family in line. It looks like HBO got a winning combination with James Goldofini, and Edie Falco and the rest of the cast. For critics, remember this is just a show, for the mafia wannabees, just hang out on the piers long enough and look at he wather, picture the whole thing, at first what it means to be a made man, for this I am afraid you have to go back to mafia 101, and look at Don Corleone's image. Do you fit that image? IF so, go ahead and try, remember what the God Father says, going in to episode 2 of T.G.F, once frugs and prostitution are involved were not talking about mafia anymore. I hope you don't wear size 9's cause those are the easiest to fill with cement. Be Wise Not a Wise Guy

The Sopranos is a reality check about modern-day organized crime. The actors are all superb and the writing is top-notch. This drama draws out the best and worst in human behavior, a struggle between man and man's cruelty to humanity. The Soprano family life is atypical of today's family nucleus. A spoiled daughter, a son who fails to meet his father's expectations, a wife who strokes the homefires, while her husband flits from bed to bed, a sorry example of fidelity. The two faces of Tony is what makes the show a must-see. First, we empathize with the hopelessly depressed and teary kingpin/husband, then we see him murder a man in cold blood without blinking an eye. This show has it all: flashes of viciousness and jealousy, a on-going conflict between the members of the Soprano families, those who were trusted then dare to betray him, and a dash of comedy.

Enjoy this show a lot. Acting is great and storylines are usually mesmerizing. Could do without the cursing and explicit scenes, but overall it almost rates a 5.
EDDIETHEGREAT 02/26/2003
This is the greatest TV series that I have ever seen. The emotion that is conveyed is so real, the acting is excellent. Most of the people that I have made watch this agree with me that it is excellent-BUT some may find that they are disgusted by the language, violence and subject matter. The directing is true big picture quality it is simply a joy to watch the sopranos!
nsaa 01/19/2003
This is just a funny and great series

Amazing TV. Smart, sharp, and full of subtext, though I'm not sure that I get it all of the time.
Fun4MaryJo 12/11/2002
Acting is well done. Stories are way, way, dramatized and overexaggerated. Misleading.
kelly7655 12/01/2002
I didn't start watching the Sopranos until the second season. I heard a lot of people rave about it, so I had to start watching. I am now tuned in every Sunday evening. I am a fan of James Gandolfini (I first saw him in the movie "Angie"), he is an excellent actor, who deserves much credit. I also like Lorraine Bracco (her acting in Goodfellas was outstanding). The variety of drama in any given episode makes the Sopranos addictive. I think the majority of Americans (including myself) do not link Italian Americans to the mafia or see them as gangsters (in response to a comment I read). I simply see the Sopranos as the ups and downs of a high class Italian American family. I enjoy the show because of the excellent actors/actresses, and the storylines. A denfinite ten.

what a great show!
norelle 04/04/2002
the mod show ever. you should watch the godfather, and godfellas. they are classics, i love italian mob movies. they are so hard core and so is this show.
girly_girl0508 02/14/2002
I watch The Sopranos faithfully. I look forward to Sunday night all week. I have never watched a show that I could get so wrapped up in. I must admit I now have a romanticized idea of the mob. Oh Well. It is one of my guilty pleasures. I nominate James Gandolfini for sexiest man of the year and I think they all got robbed this year at the awards. I hope James never leaves and the show is on for ten more years. Can you imagine what the final episode would be like?
callmetootie 02/03/2002
Men at strip joints, drug-addicted girls with sleazy boyfriends, and geeky ladies in glasses carrying in vodka and gin to goofy guys in tight pants. Is this you're kind of drama? If so, watch The Sopranos.
shuisangel 11/26/2001
I don't see why Italian-Americans are all worked up about The Sopranos "stereotyping" Italians.I'm 1/4 Italian and my mom's 1/2 Italian, and we both love the show.I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next season.
alainanoel 09/26/2001
I find myself getting everybody to bed and everything done so that I can sit and watch this show. I do think the violence is a bit much this last season but, the acting is funny at times and great all around. Let the Uncle sing more his voice is fabulous.
Potch1214 09/21/2001
Surprisingly low on the list. The Sopranos is honestly the best written, directed and acted show on all of TV. Even when it's not up to par, it is light years ahead of most of the crap that passes for drama on TV. When the Sopranos is on, it is absolutely untouchable.
mcapple 08/14/2001
James Gandolfini does an exceptional job as Tony Soprano - the rest of the cast is equally talented. I've purchased the first season, look forward to repeated viewings of the remaining seasons. I've heard they're going to end the series after the fourth season. That's really sad, I'll miss it a lot.
rm2200 06/14/2001
The Sopranos is without a doubt the SECOND BEST SHOW ON TELIVISION.(After ER). It is a fascinating look at the brutal world of organized crime. It is a program loaded with great charecters (The best of which seldom make through the particular season they are in). Because of the subject matter The Sopranos is constantly denied the BEST DRAMA Emmy it so richly desirves. This year's episode, THE EMPOYEE OF THE YEAR, just might do the trick. It is without a doubt the most powerful episode on TV this year. The bottom line onthe Sopranos is: If you need a reason to subscribe to HBO (Even if it is only the months that The Sopranos is broadcast) THIS IS IT!!!
nwando 05/24/2001
The SOPRANOS is just the best and most real tv show. I love it, iam so addicted to it. PLus i think Spider is king of cute...

I am a true Italian, I even speak it. I grew up in New York, Everytime i watch the Sopranos i feel like i am watching my Family on TV. There exactly the same way my family is in Italy, and i love this Freaken show. It's THE BEST show ever. And for any Italian American who feels that the show is offensive, insulting, and sterotype, then you are pathetic, do yourself a favor and save up some money and buy yourself a sense of humor, or convert and become a jew. Wake up and smell the coffee, It's only a freaken TV show, i hate to even call it a TV show because it's better then that. It's THE BEST mini Movie you can watch on TV. I wish they come out with a 3 hour movie of this show. STUGOTS ( SOPRANOS 4 LIFE ) Omerta !
Grug128 05/12/2001
Gandolfini, Bracco, and Lorraine Falco are a fantastic cast, (just to name a few of my personal favorites) I love this show. And for once I hope rumors are not true and "Tony" is not thinking of leaving. Sopranos without James is like The Godfather without Brando.
joybytes 05/07/2001
This is one of the best TV dramas in years. The writing is superb and the story line fascinating. I lived in NYC (Little Italy) for 16 years and I can tell you for a fact that the behavior and accents are authentic. But that aside: I think the actors are engaging and the character development excellent. Actually there is a lot of sage wisdom being uttered from the mouths of those that are (yes) not very well educated but by no means dumb. I would call them less sophisticated. But what great characters. In real life, living around people who "off" people would give me the creeps but hey, I'm watching the show to be entertained, not to learn about different cultures - I go to PBS or the biography and documentary channels for that.
cxt7 05/07/2001
The most unpredictable show on T.V.
jhowes 04/22/2001
Sopranos is by far the best program on television today. We rented the first season at our video store and loved every minute. We have since watched the second season, and up to date on #3. James Gandolfini is absolutely great as Tony Soprano. All of the actors on this show are fabulous!!! Wish it could go on and on. Best entertainment going!!
mommycgl 04/20/2001
This show is great!! I have family in Brooklyn and everytime I watch it I feel like I'm back there again. The only problem I have with it though is I think Ralphie needs to get the @#*% kicked out of him. Anyone else agree with me???
mkorsu 04/20/2001
The best show on television right now!!! Bar None!!!
SlimJim 04/16/2001
Best show I have enjoyed for years. Kinda reminds me of "Crime Story" that ran in the 80's.. It is superb !! As for defaming my Itailian friends,, What a bunch of Bull. I am insulted by those who suggest that we assume all Italians are mobsters. Nothing could be further than the truth, are they that insecure about their hetitage? Fact is, it is just a very good show that enlightens us about how various personalities live their lives and cope with the stresses they encounter. It is a GREAT show and I applaud HBO for airing it and I Hope it continues past the four years currently slated!!
Better2me 04/09/2001
My whole family and I every Sunday at 9pm. wait for the brand new Sopranos to come on.And we are all Italian!!!I think these people that put down the show need to focus their their minds on something thats real!why take a tv show away from millions of people who enjoy it?If you find it offensive change the channel, thats why we have over 100 of them! This year I would love to see them get an Grammy!!
tgalusha 04/06/2001
The BEST!

First of all, The Sopranos is by far the best show in TV history. Second, I would like to respond to "Voter2004". I am an Italian/Jewish male from NJ, and this is the closest thing to home and what I grew up in. Sorry the show is a bit to real for you. While these mobsters might not be the most educated bunch, they have some endearing qualities. None of them want to involve family in the business they choose. They provide good, stable home lives (Tony coming home for dinner so the family can eat together). How does this offend you? This show represents a VERY SMALL % of people. Guess what, I think the viewing public is wise enough to realize that not all Italian americans are gangsters. What would you suggest...? How about a show where a bunch of couples go to an island and get tempted into affairs by strangers like Temptation Island. Or how about a show where we get to watch people starving almost to death, in the middle of the outback for a million dollars? Please turn your cable off and stick to watching "Friends".
Syrena 03/19/2001
This is the most compelling weekly show I have ever seen. Every time I think I know where they are going, they totally surprise me and I just LOVE that.
Debbie Gandee White 03/17/2001
The Best show on. Glad we have HBO and Direct TV to watch it.
mama 03/12/2001
I personally love this show! It is sooooo my in-laws.I wish I had a Silvio,Paulie,or Tony around to help me with some of them,(particularly my husband!)I also have a cousin from Manhattan named Vinnie. He is our family bad boy. My sister is close with his wife and upon occasion will go to visit. After coming home one time she tried to tell me what a devoted husband and hard worker he was, after all he stayed at work all weekend! I told her to start watching the Sopranos, as for the people that have taken the time to respond in a less than positive manner on this link,I only have a couple of things to say.....one, GET A LIFE! and 2 change the effen channel! and 3 Don`t waste the web
foolina 03/05/2001
for those of italian american background who are offended, get over it. Concentrate on the body odor.
bgreen 03/02/2001
I like this show. it is a good show an i hope it is on for a long time.
daf62757 02/27/2001
The government needs to nationalize this show and force the crew to make 52 shows a year. I have always loved to see mafia type movies that examine the inner working of the crime family organization. WHoever writes this show has done some tremendous research. The acting is the best on TV and I can't wait for the season opener in ONE WEEK! YEA!!!!!
