The guy who came up with the premise of the movie and directed it is actually a Christian - so aryandan get your facts correct before you b***h about something that you don't really know anything about. I think its a very clever film and I do like the main thrust of the film being that religion is an idea that should grow rather than using religion as a weapon against the things that you don't approve of or are frightened of. its a very sweet film and does raise a lot of questions and ideas that perhaps some people should take on board

What a dog(ma) of a movie. yuck.
LadyShark4534 12/20/2003
A very odd, yet interesting film about two angels(Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) who get banished from Heaven only to try and get back. I gotta admit the three hockey punk characters made this film good. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't have bothered watching.
heidikay 08/05/2003
Sacreligious. Some things are sacred and shouldn't be poked fun at. I'm down for laughing at almost everything, but not my beliefs.
forgotten hero 07/24/2003
This movie reminds me of how overly sensitive people are about their belief system. Some people just need to learn how to let things go and laugh.
Sheba 07/24/2003
Wouldn't have casted Alanis Morrisette as God, some of Smith's knowlege of the Catholic dogma is flawed, but still a great movie !!
kamylienne 07/19/2003
Really now, are people so offended by this movie just because it's a commentary on religion? Kevin Smith's fourth installment in the View Askew series shows a great progression in character development from the previous movies (don't get me wrong, I loved "Clerks", even though the tone of the entire script was the same for pretty much everyone). Anyway, it brings up many interesting concepts about religion (not about God being female, or Jesus being black, but things like 'it's not what we have faith in, it's that we HAVE faith' (not a direct quote from the movie, just the jist of it, I think, haven't seen it in a while)). If you're easily offended, or just don't want to see Chris Rock fall stark naked from the sky, this movie isn't for you. Otherwise, I loved it (and I especially liked the "Buddy Christ"!)

What can I say, I like stupid movies.

Sheer rubbish from and for simple minded boors with little to no talent.
Annelie_85 09/28/2002
This movie made me kinda confused..it was a little weird..hehe..but it was fun aswell. Alan Richman and Chris Rock was good in it. Ben Affleck was cruel . He and Matt Damon was hot! :o)

This movie's special edition DVD -- looking for all the world like a slim, leather-bound "bible" -- has a place of honor on my shelf next to other classics of religious subversity. (Includes "Last Temptation of Christ" and "MP's Life of Brian.") People can sit there and get offended all they want by it, but beneath the *#&$ monster, the cruder jokes, and the general insanity is a plethora of deep insight into the nature of all religions, not just Catholicism. This movie is so good that even the end credits are good, with an Alanis M song that I like (the verses seem to be those that God would use, too), and a list of authors that inspired this work that everyone should look into for further insight on what this movie was trying to get across.

This is just another Hollywood attack on Christianity and, more specifically, Catholicism. This movie used two tired out cliches, that God is a women and Jesus was black. Get real! I guess that makes me the Holy Ghost. The movie had a disclaimer in the beginning warning the viewers not to get offended because it is just a funny movie. But the truth is the Zionist who run Hollywood will stop at nothing to put down the ideas of Gentiles and this movie is just one more notch on their bigoted belt. If someone made a movie putting down Judaism, as Christianity was here, there would be non-stop protest and claims of 'anti-Semitism', but trash Christianity and the Jews will just make another such film without batting an eye. This movie is just an excuse for Jewish bigots to rant against Catholics, and spread distain for the faithful. Truly a hateful movie hiding behind comedy.

This show sucked! So does Jay and Silent Bob! What was even the storyline? I got so bored during this crap that I failed to pay attention. The only thing that made it worth staring at for one second was Chris Rock. If he wasn't in it then it would have no plot whatsoever.
Alucard 12/05/2001
I love this movie, naoi2753om I should swallow your soul! Silent Bob(Kevin Smith) Almost has a god! rateing with me. This movie is among my top ten. Kevin Smith Picked a target that was well worth it. Alanis Morrisette is the best reprensentation of God that i have seen to this date. The "Ill Equipped" angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) Gave a great preformance. (labr8631om Bob spoke twice "No Ticket" "thanks" On the train and and at the end of the movie to god) please people do your homework "But I do Belive in this" -Matt Damon
Texx 11/23/2001
Alan Rickman is great! Needed to drop the crap monster though.
Lotus 08/03/2001
Decent, probably not quite as bad as the 2 I gave it, but definitely not up to all the hype I heard over it. Maybe it was the Golgothan $?@# Demon that bothered me, but I just thought there was just too much vulgar for no reason. Was it supposed to be deep or shallow? I never could tell.
"Free Thought" 01/21/2001
Allanis Morrisette as god was 'perfect'. This is another well told comedic story from Kevin Smith. The thirteenth diciple Rufus was an excellent addition, and I love it when people exercise their American rights to diddle-daddle with everything that people find sacred in a 'funny' way. I like Allanis as god, she could be my god, I'd like her telling me what to do, but only so I can disobey her and cause chaos everywhere.
juicetrn 01/01/2001
love this movie, someone with a brain actually writes for hollywood!
Red-dog 10/15/2000
Dogma had great interpretation of scripture although not all information (character names) was 100% accurate. They should have picked someone else to play God, all other characters were a good fit. Silent Bob was great as usual, maybe he could have had one more line.
jblank 10/07/2000
stupid movie.
alicat 09/08/2000
I like seeing different views of religion and that is why I liked Dogma. It was just a different way of telling a story and a different way to believe or have faith. It was really good. If you don't get all sensitive about the Catholic religion aspect, then you'll enjoy this movie. I was expecting more from the cast since it is filled with talented young actors. Kevin Smith is also very funny so I was expecting more of his wit to come out but I was disappointed.
youl10181om 08/25/2000
Alanis rocks and she may as well be god!! (Joking but not sarcastic)
Spiralingmarce 08/05/2000
Silent Bob is lovable. And who wouldn't like God? I've never much liked movies starring excedingly stupid characters or way too much violence, but this was pretty enjoyable.
magg8485om 07/19/2000
thought it was funny as hell, i laughed at some of the sickest things, especially when my friends didn't get it.
labr8631om 07/15/2000
This is probably the best movie I've seen all year. The dialogue is incredibly witty, and their ideas and theories on life are interesting and make you think. The only problem: Silent Bob speaks. Only once, but he's so much more powerful when he doesn't.
Chen8215om 07/15/2000
When I saw this movie, I thought it was weird. The story was religious, but with lots of twists and turns. Although strange, I would recommend this to anyone.
bmak8561om 07/14/2000
This story was not especially good in this movie, nor was the effects. It is certainly not one of the films that you remember, but you will probably enjoy it. The ending is disappointing.
Haze8247om 07/12/2000
Actually I loved the concept, the way it totally upheaved the Catholic male's censorship and editorizing of the New Bible. The writers' sense of humor was right on the mark except for the last monster.
paul8436om 07/11/2000
Very smart, and original! A halarious satire that SHOULD NOT be taken so seriously. Have fun when viewing.
Wiggum 06/19/2000
I expected this movie to be far better than it actually was. People told me "Dogma" questioned organized religion in a unique and funny way, and I've enjoyed other things done by Kevin Smith, so I anticipated a great movie. But "Dogma" is a dud. The movie does discuss religion and it is irreverent, but the dialogue tries unsuccessfully to be deep, and the exploration of organized religion is superficial and sophomoric. Even worse, the movie just isn't funny. I can handle shallow, but at least make it funny shallow. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon deliver uninspired performances, as do most of the other actors in the overcrowded ensemble of characters. This movie isn't worth a $3 rental, even if you're splitting it with four other people.
magellan 06/18/2000
Entertaining but overall somewhat of a disappointment. The Catholic Church is such an easy target, and Kevin Smith is so irreverant in general, that I was expecting this movie to be really, really funny. While there were some amusing aspects - Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were entertaining as rogue angels - I thought the dialogue was forced, and the plot was not nearly as clever as it could have been.
ldja7295du 06/09/2000
A disappointing effort from Kevin Smith. He brings his trademark irrelevent banter to Catholocism, an interesting concept, but the joke fails to support the entire film. This is no Chasing Amy or Clerks; it is unfortunately more of a Mallrats.
jame7279om 06/09/2000
With the likes of such an all star cast one would think that Kevin Smith's film would live up to "Mall Rats." To sum it up, it wasn't good.
kaka7230om 06/08/2000
Very unusually funny.
toph7137et 06/05/2000
Another great movie from the team that brought you "Clerks." This is a great ensemble cast who look like they had fun making this movie. Any movie with Jay and Silent Bob can't be all bad. Of course Salma Hayek in a movie can't hurt either.
fatb7099om 06/03/2000
I loved this movie until the ending. I enjoyed the jokes and I liked how the movie poked fun at religion without being disrespectful. When Alanis Morrisette came out as God, I was pissed off. I think God should have been left a mystery, and instead she was a joke.
Nerd7061om 06/01/2000
This movie's concept and the ideas it tries to get across are extremely good. It really makes viewers question God, religion, and themselves. However, it is better for the mature audience who can be able to grasp these concepts.
Regi7048et 06/01/2000
Any film that promotes the generation of ideas without being hamstrung by belief is okay in my book.
kyll3705et 05/30/2000
This movie worked on so many levels-VERY FUNNY, but very touching as well..Really got me to thinking about religion, and mankind, if you will. Definitely will own this one..
cfen4849om 03/11/2000
Pretty disappointing and juvenile.
naoi2753om 01/10/2000
An absolutely dreadful film, not because of its "blasphemous" contents but rather because it was so juvenile and such a mish-mash of oddments thrown together. and did anyone notice how the guy who didn't speak copied all of his facial expressions from joey in friends!!
mart415om 12/10/1999
Not only funny, but it also makes you think and wonder that this concept might not be so far from the truth after all... Certainly, it states a lot of the harsh truths about the church...
susa520om 11/29/1999
Hilarious.
dalt533om 11/14/1999
Shockingly funny movie with a positive message about faith buried beneath the usual Kevin Smith sarcasm and scatalogical humor. As always, Jay and Silent Bob steal the show.
