i used to hav sum...i miss them! but they were noisy n messy! but they wer pretty!

In my view, if you want to keep pet birds, the best choices are chickens, geese, ducks or turkeys. That way, when you've tired of your pet, you have some tasty eating.

maybe but they poop alot and they chirp loudly
??Cookie?? 06/24/2008
birds make alot of noise when they want attention, they also aren't very affectionate and it is quite a hassle to clip their feathers so they don't fly away.
twansalem 06/24/2008
It depends on the type of bird. I would guess that some varieties of parrots probably make great pets, but other kinds of birds just make a lot of noise and require frequent cage cleanings without much reward.

noisy and messy...two stars because they can be entertaining Read my review and there was only one star...damn birds even came in and took a star away to make me look bad...sheesh
numbah16tdhaha 06/23/2008
My mom's Cockatoo laughs like me...
UPDATE: *sniff* I'm a bird guy. Sure, I gotta sweep up the damn feathers all the time and sometimes they have a tantrum and nothing I can do will make it stop, but they are some funny little buggers. I don't even hold a grudge against Thackery (the above mentioned cockatoo) for the three times he's bitten me...
kamylienne 10/21/2007
I'd imagine they're hard to take care of, and I'd hate to keep an animal in a cage when it should be free to fly, but I've never had a bird myself before. That's not to say they're not cool animals, but I don't know about keeping them as pets necessarily.Although, this guy's pretty cool: I question Snowball's taste in music, but otherwise you can't say that this isn't a cool bird:
Mad Hatter 09/19/2007
If I can get numbah's mother's bird to say "Bevo" (The Longhorns mascot) when I ask "What's for dinner?" I'll be happy.
As far as birds as pets, not my first choice, mainly because you usually have to keep them in a cage, but they are fun.
Jamie McBain 09/18/2007
Depends on the type of bird, you have. For example parrots, are noisy and loud, need their cages cleaned alot, and can attack, if you're not careful.
To be brutally honest, birds belong outdoors, where they can nest, fly where they want to, and have constant food supply.

i'm starting to hate birds. i'll be blunt: i actually hate birds right now, and the picture of the mina birds on this page is straight-up pissing me off.i was up until after 3am last night doing work. at roughly 5:45 this morning i was woken up by what i at first thought was a woman screaming.i quickly realized that it was a bird who had set up a nest in the gutter above my bedroom window. he's woken me up before but, either b/c of bad weather or, maybe he was out of town, i don't know, he hasn't woken me up in a while.from 5:45 until 6:30, I tossed and turned, fantasizing about inflicting unfathomable pain on this bird, who is actually pretty cute - small, brown, totally harmless-looking. but this bird has vocal chords, and there comes a time when you need to take matters into your own hands.I tried everything to block out the din, but nothing worked. I tried closing my window. I tried moving his nest, but broke my screen & nearly fell out of my 2nd-story window in nothing but my boxers in the process. I did serious, possibly permanent, damage to my hearing, listening to my iPod at full volume. (Just to give you some sense of how loud this bird is, I could still hear him over my blaring music, which there's no way I could have slept through anyway.) I banged on my window in an effort to scare the bird away until my hand hurt and I was sure my downstairs neighbors were going to call the police. Finally, I confronted the truth of the matter head-on: I needed earplugs. Good ones. I ended up going to Wal-Mart, which is about a half-hour away b/c nothing else was open. The earplugs worked, but I will never forget the sight I saw while walking to my car. I hope to God it was the state of delirious frustration I was in at the time, and not reality, but when I looked back at my building, there was a single bird standing on the gutter. My window at the time was open maybe half-an-inch, if that. This freaking bird was literally hanging upside down from the gutter and sticking his head in the top of my window. Are birds capable of malice? My experiences of this morning leave little doubt.

Birds make a great pet for those out there who know what they are doing. The first thing to consider is that there are many types of birds. If you want one that is pretty to look at but not to touch, budgies, finches, or canaries are the best way to go. If you want something small that doesn't make a lot of noise but will still be a great companion, parrotlets and cockatiels are great. All other birds should NOT be a first time pet. The thing to remember is that owning a bird is a BIG responsibility. Some would even say more so than owning a dog or cat. Their cages need to be cleaned regularly, they must be taken out of their cages on a daily basis and must always have stimulation. If you have the time to put into a bird, they give ten fold of what they receive. They truly make wonderful pets, but will not to those who abuse them. It is also important to get a hand-fed bird. The difference is amazing. If, however, you do not spend enough time with them, they will loose their handability and the extra money paid for a hand-tamed bird will be wasted. PLEASE do research before buying any bird. These are amazing creatures and deserve all the attention they can get!

I love birds because they are great pets! They are easy to take care of and they don't need much looking after. if you have a bird phobia then get over it, coz it's pointless and birds are cool!

In 1995, Sherri and Jerry Cross opened a bird breeding business out of their home in Flint, Michigan. As part of that business they also carried bird supplies and cages for their customers. Along the way they added services to their business. Sherri studied in avian first aid, handling minor bird medical emergencies and intakes. She is especially knowledgeable about bird behavior Sherri and her Daughter Melissa both are experts at hand feeding baby birds . Jerry went on to learn about bird nutrition and feeding. Both went on to become Certified Avian Specialists, becoming certified by the PIJAC in 1999. We have established excellent relationships with area veterinarians, who often refer their clients to us for advice on behavior and care. While we do not perform medical procedures, we are available for minor avian emergencies 24 hours a day to stabilize birds until proper medical care can be obtained. We offer bird grooming such as wing and toenail clipping. We also offer bird sitting services. Over the years Borrowed Rainbow developed relationships with a number of pet supply manufacturers and wholesales, and from time to time he have handled supplies for pets other then birds. A new trend is developing in the country for pet care and supply services delivered right to the home.

My bird has its wings clipped but is out of the cage most of the day, hes my fav pet,he couldnt be happier. He laughs (really!) and chirps al day, he's a quaker parrot and only bites if you really really annoy him.
mystic mango 11/25/2004
Taking a bird, clipping its wings and locking it in a cage is flat-out cruel. Birds were meant to fly.
ralph_kool13 09/05/2004
Ok! well I have so much to say about this topic. I love birds and I am going to breed them when i am older. I agree that people might not like the idear of keeping them locked up, but they can be tamed and really well looked after. You can keep them i huge avairys andlet them out in the house whenever you want to. You can teach them to talk, how to obay commands, how to dance: anything! they are the most cleaver type of aniamls in the vocal sense. If you don't agree that birds are good for pets, then you don't have a heart. And to the person who said he hated birds...why did he even bother typing his opinion? he says he hates them, and yet he is complaining about the way they are treated. Birds are the coolest things around! just take a look at my bird webpage: www.matmice.com/home/ralph_kool13

Birds are great, birds are fun, but owning a bird can be dangerous because birds can easily carry diseases. My dad had a friend whose daughter became ill and almost died from a disease carried by her parrot. That sort of takes the wind out of my sales when it comes to birds as pets. Other than that, they are fun (a little messy) and can be verry intelligent. Not only do Mina Birds speak, but some can even carry on full length conversations. (When one started answering my questions with full sentence answers I was really freaked.)

I have a couple of birds...if they weren't like family I would have gotten rid of them a long time ago.

I have three birds: a Blue and Gold Macaw, a Cockateil and a Meyer's Parrot, so I think that I am educated on the subject of birds. I love each and every single one of my birds, and they each have their own distinct personality. My cockateil whistles Dixie when you hold a puppet up to her cage, and my blue and gold Macaw has an amazing vocabulary which includes: "Uh-oh" and "Shut up" just to name a few. Unfortunately he sometimes doesn't listen to his own advice and can be a bit loud at times. Birds are also very messy and it takes a lot of time to clean up after them. However, they each have their own distinct personality and can make wonderful pets. Espescially the cockatoos, they are so affectionate. Wonderful pets! I am a bird person!

We love our pet cockatiel Rudy...my wife has allergies to pet dander...but the children really wanted a pet...so after careful consideration and research we decided on a cocktiel. We purchased him form a highly qualified breeder of tropical birds. All I can say is that he is awesome...the children have taught him to talk...we let him out of his cage daily so he can strut around and flap his wings. We purchased a cage large enough for him so he has plenty of room. We each take turns taking care of him and it only takes a few minutes to clean things up...once a week we clean his cage...as soon as he hears us he starts to talk and sing...he is quite a character and has really become part of the family. An awesome pet!!!!
twinmom101 04/22/2003
let's just say it again for the record: don't buy people pets. I got a parakeet two weeks before I had twins so the poor thing gets food and water and that's it. I barely have time to clean up the huge mess it leaves let alone give it any attention. The thing gets really pissy when both of my babies are crying and the noise between the bird and the babies can rival a jet take-off. I wish I could just let it go but I'm afraid it would die. Also, how can you tell if you have a boy or a girl bird?
Snoopy 02/12/2003
I agree with the people here who say birds should be free. I like them, but I would never keep one in a cage as a pet.
ChunkyLover53 02/11/2003
I don't believe in keeping birds caged up and indoors. I have a bird bath, bird house, and bird feeder in my yard. I consider those birds my pets.
enchanceaa 02/10/2003
Birds can be great pets. I currently have 2 zebra finches but I have had 4 other zebra finches and 4 parakeets. But when you get alot of parakeets together they dont shut up and drive you nuts.
Amy55Rose 01/02/2003
I had two parakeets: Spot and Niel. I loved them so much! Spot died early from some unknown illness and I cried for days because I was sure it was my fault and I had killed him. I was crushed when my other bird, Niel, flew away but deep down inside, I think he was happy before he died. I really hated to see them in a cage.

Birds are pretty but they suck. I've been stuck w/2 cockatiels for two years and they give me pure hell. They are messy and nasty. I have to clean the cage and change the food and water all the time. I have to scrub the floor b/c they make a mess every time they eat and they are loud and annoying most of the time. Covering the cage does not help. Birds should also not belong in cages.
thadea 11/13/2002
people shouldn't keep birds as pets, especially songbirds. they were meant to be free. Its wrong to force them to a life of repetitious boredom. When they are bought in pairs and one dies, can you imagine the lonliness that one must feel? Its a shame really.
