The Patriot was a good film. It was hard not to compare this film with Braveheart because the plots were somewhat the same. I find Mel Gibson could have been more believeble.

And just what are some of you basing your opinions of this movie being historically incorrect? Were you all there during the events? The importance of the movie lies not in 100% accuracy, but in the real story of a young Nations' fight for independence. It shows the heart and soul of the men and women who sacrificed everything so you could live free today. With all the crap being generated in Hollywood today, nothing more than eye candy, it was nice to be treated to an interactive experience, where what was being said was as important as what was being done. Any American, with a sense of pride in their Country, will be able to watch this movie and be proud of their heritage.

The Patriot is the best movie i have ever seen. There was so much action. it had different genres of movies all in one. it had drama, action and comedy. This movie deserves a five star rating!I loved it sooooo much, and can't wait to buy it!

This movie has just recently come out here in Australia, and I can only hope that other Australians realize how historically incorrect this film is. Didn't it occur to anyone whilst writing the screenplay that a city called "Washington" didn't exist in 1770s America? And yet it is mentioned in the movie. Apparently attention to detail isn't important to people who cast Aussies and Brits in a film about the American Revolution. Save your money--read a history book instead.

An okay storyline, and Mel Gibson is a good actor. But it was like a poor version of Braveheart. Of course my rating wouldn't be so low if it weren't for the six or seven surprise guest appearances by, "Mr. Microphone," at the top of several scenes.

I think that The patriot is one of the greatest all-times movie! It was excellent! The acting was great(both from Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger)! The historical accuracy might not be at its best but it does not really matter. The movie does reflect a bit of the"I single-handedly saved the world"theme that so many American movies have about them, but it was still very good. If I could I would have given it six stars!

Once again, Mel puts out a great movie. It was long, but I didn't mind at all. Great plot. Great characters. Great action.
WHSI9527OM 08/09/2000
Mel Gibson, what can I say? It is definitely one of the best summer movies with a great plot, acting, and smooth transitions between scenes. The only complaint I had about this movie is that it is too much like Braveheart.

Best movie I have ever seen. Absolutly love it!
sperryc 08/07/2000
This movie was great--a perfect balance between gory violence and healthy patriotism. Restraint was an interesting idea for a theme. And I'm glad Mel didn't have any. Most importantly, though, was how this movie was neither a fraud nor a sham. A definite plus.

A fraud and a sham

Our local radio talk show host (Chuck Baldwin Live Pensacola, Florida) bought out 2 theatres showing "The Patriot" and offered FREE ADMISSION to his listening audience as a thank you for 6 years on the air. Over 350 people of all ages watched and all loved it! I would rank it as good as a "Gone With The Wind" epic and I really appreciated a movie that I was able to take my kids to. It taught them some history and patriotic principles. There were some very violent scenes, but I think it needed to be told to show children the horrors of war and the price for freedom!
kyll3705et 07/29/2000
You can tell Mel Gibson has children in real life..He was very moving in this film-we are lucky to have him as an actor in our generation. Who was the boy that played the older son? A star to watch, I believe.

This movie was I think the best movie that Mel Gibson has ever played a role in. He was fantastic. This movie made me look at our country's history of war in a different prospective. Although it may have been a movie, it made me realize how it was for the men fighting for our country's freedom. It really brought tears to my eyes and I celebrated the 4th of July in a whole different light this year!

I enjoyed watching the Patriot. I didn't think Mel Gibson could be as successful with the Patriot as he was with Braveheart but I was wrong. They are both equally good movies.

I don't know about this movie. I was entertained for the whole 3 hours (which in my book is way too long for any movie). I thought the acting was really good. Heath and Mel were great looking as well as believable in their parts. The history behind the movie was a great lesson about the Revolutionary war that is not given enough attention in schools. There was just so much going on throughout the movie. The plot was so thick. I am guessing there were like 25 mini stories going on and I never got confused or anything but it was just too much. There were also a lot of cheesy one liners. Granted, you have to have one liners in a movie like this but I started laughing outloud since there were so many. For as much cheese in the Patriot, I admit I totally got goose bumps more than once during the movie.

Patriot is a fantastic movie. Great story, great costumes, a lot of action. The action is not too realistic, which is rare these days.
swee8945om 07/22/2000
I watched X-Men before watching Patriot. I think Patriot edges out X-Men. I think Patriot was highly accurate, and I was surprised that it turned out better than I had hoped! I will see it again. I almost cried when I saw Benjamen Martin carrying the flag!

I gave it a four because I'm a huge Mel Gibson fan, but I can't say this was his best effort. The script seems contrived and the acting wasn't all that. I heard Mel turned down the starring role for Gladiator. His mistake.
akir8797om 07/20/2000
What a great movie!!! I give it 5 stars without a doubt. If I could, I even wanna give more than 5 stars. I love the movie itself, actors (chemistry between veteran Mel Gibson and new-comer Heath Ledger's are sooooo good), soundtrack! I've seen the movie three times and I can't wait till it comes on vhs or dvd.
anch8848du 07/20/2000
Good plot, though clique. Great action scenes. A long movie that gets tiring. Not as good as Braveheart, and Mel Gibson is tiresome.
alis8847om 07/20/2000
I didn't really know what to expect going in, and the three hour running time made me a bit weary, but I definitely thought it was worth it. The story line was extremely interesting, and I enjoyed the historical aspect of it. The acting was also very good, and I would want to see future movies starring these actors.
athe8816om 07/19/2000
I thought this movie was wonderful. I think people need to remember that it is just a movie, not required to be completely accurate. Everyone has their interpretation of history anyway. I've never read so many pious comments. I have a history degree and know enough to say that there is a bit of truth in both sides. Maybe every British general wasn't brutal, but some were. After all, we are Americans and are allowed to portray the bad guy on whichever side we choose. Please people, lighten up. Mel Gibson gave us another movie with substance when we're surrounded by these beyond stupid teeny bopper movies. I thank him.

The Patriot is excellent! God bless America. We need to be more patriotic and grateful for people who helped found our country

Mel Gibson still has it. He is inspirational, moving, and emotional all at the same time.
mike8752om 07/18/2000
I thought that this movie was pathetic pro-American propaganda. It was historically inaccurate and made the British look like baby killing tyrants. That some people would pretend that it is historcally accurate is scary. It is pure entertainment and nothing more. Similar to Braveheart, which twisted history to try to make the British seem worse than the Nazis.

I really enjoyed this movie. It’s not the most masterful piece of cinema I’ve ever experienced, but it was a great way to pass a couple hours on a Sunday afternoon. If you’re turned off by violence, you may want to steer clear, but if you’re in the mood for a good (if predictable and unoriginal) action movie, “The Patriot” will do the job. The big battle scenes don’t compare to the D-Day landing depicted in “Saving Private Ryan” or the huge arrows & sword clashes in “Braveheart,” but they give you a powerful sense of what it must have been like to be involved in that kind of deadly, musket-to-musket chaos. The acting isn’t stellar, but it’s good enough to carry the story along and make you care about the characters. And the plot follows the same “avenge my family” template we’ve seen in countless other movies, but it manages to keep you engaged in the action. My only real complaint is that they really overdid the whole bad guy thing. To claim that this is not one of those movies that blurs the lines between good and evil would be an enormous understatement, which is kind of irritating because they could have used the main character’s savage past to do a much better job of exploring the way war can often produce moral ambiguity. But that’s not the point of this kind of movie. The point is to show a good guy who has to take revenge on a really, really bad guy. And trust me, they do just about everything possible to make it clear that the bad guy is about as bad as he can be.

Anonymous (The fraud one) must be a British Subject. While this movie is a compilation of multiple stories from the Revolution, it has a good historical base. A very heart ripping movie, that should motivate any American to be proud of our forefathers. As a devout Constitutionalist, I found the scenes regarding the Militia and firearms ownership and use to be exceptional. A must see movie.

I really liked this movie. In a time when our idea of war is the video game-type air raid on Iraq broadcast live on CNN, it was amazing to see the face to face, musket to musket battles. Displaying his action prowess and tremendous acting ability, Mel Gibson was great. While there were parts that were cheesy and hokey, the action and raw emotion of the characters made it easy for me to overlook those parts. I also liked that even though there is a happy ending (I'm not giving anything away here...if you don't know that the U.S. won the Revolutionary War, you have no business using a computer), there were moments of true loss which is inevitable in times of war. I highly recommend this film and be sure to check it out in the theaters.

It shows the American Independence which was very informative and depicted. It has a very good screenplay. The roles played were superb, and the effort shown in presenting the struggle was outstanding.

A very good movie. The scenic views make the film very appealing and pretty. The acting and casting of characters is top notch. It depicts the scenes of war with brutality, and makes the viewer feel more in touch with the history of the American Revolution.
lips457du 07/10/2000
I wanted very much to give this movie a 5, but unfortunately I was disappointed with how this film turned out. It lost the essences of the American revolution -- many brave individuals willing to fight for their beliefs -- into a typical unrealistic super-hero man fighting a ridiculously evil bad guy. This subject deserved better.
mari8235om 07/07/2000
Best movie I have seen since "Titanic." Should be required for all young people to get a brief understanding of the sacrifices made by the people who founded this country. I applaud Mel Gibson for making a film with such strong conservative values.
Ruby 07/04/2000
I wanted to give this movie a 5-star rating, because I firmly believe its topic - the founding of the United States - is history's greatest moment... one that's been unfairly neglected by Hollywood. But this isn't the movie I would have made about the Revolution. THE PATRIOT is a classic "avenge my family" action story with the real gritty "give me liberty or give me death" stuff faded into the background. Still, it is compelling: any movie that convincingly pulls you into the horror of musket-to-musket-at-20-feet standoffs is going to grab your attention. And the movie is nicely filmed and features some great performances. Still, its too long, spends too much time reconciling the heroism of 1776 with the post-Civil Rights vibe of our own era, and the romance plots seem tacked on. Nevertheless, its refreshing to see Hollywood approaching the subject of the U.S. founding. There's a scene about recruiting for the local militia that I'm sure lots of post-mod's will find absolutely corny. But why? This is REAL history. If it seems corny, it only underscores how removed we are from the heroic sacrifices that birthed the most noble experiment in human history: self-rule with a respect for natural rights of individual men. THE PATRIOT is imperfect, but you and your family should see it.

Ever see a "bad" Mel Gibson movie?...neither have I...This is epic film like Braveheart and Gibson is at his best...
