I loved the historical aspect of the movie and how it depicted WWII and the battles. It also showed the personal and emotional side of the war by developing the characters to get on a human level with the audience.

Saving Private Ryan was a good drama. I loved the way it made me feel like I was right in the trenches with them. The actors did a good job of making me feel their emotions. I think I really know what war was like because of that movie. This was one of the best movies I have seen. This was a very touching, very realistic movie. The reason I like it so much is because it is so realistic.

I am a big fan of historical movies and this was a great documentary on what life during war is like. The brutality, despair, and hopelessness was wonderfully portrayed in the film. The storyline was good for demonstrating the coverage and bravery of soliders, and also for showing the audience the loss families endured during war times.

I don't know if I give this drama a rating of five stars in honor of Siskel and Ebert or in honor of my Government teacher, Mr. Berry, who would give it two thumbs down for its ability to evoke memories he'd rather supress. So five stars for its excellent effects, its emotional draw, its sense of reality, but five stars backwards from the ex-Vietnam solider who couldn't sit through the entire thing without gagging. So real was the stench of death drifting back into his nostrils. Five stars for the power of the film making.

Mr. Spealberg, please, stop doing that films. I only liked the first 20 minutes.

The opening sequence is so eloquently filmed it still haunts me. I can hear in my mind the soldier dying on Omaha Beach, screaming out for his mother. The rest of the movie was also terrific, but nothing compared to D-Day. Definitely one of Hank's best.

In the case of this film, the plot is not as realistic and extreme as the scenery, actions/words, and the truth to the era. I personally advise that non-WWII veterans see this movie, because possibly the acting and the backgrounds are so realistic that it could cause recurring bad or even traumatic memories to the viewer, and trigger unwanted emotions from that time in their lives that could send them into tears or fear. One good side is that it does a good job in showing just how incredibly influential WWII was, and it gives the viewer a good idea of the struggles, both military and personal. We, as Americans had to endure and win what could have been history's ultimate battle between good and evil.

Saving Private Ryan was a terrific movie. Spielberg makes you feel like you are right in the war. The costumes, historical background are superb. The story about Private Ryan is a sad story. He lost all his brothers and I could never imagine, but it makes the viewer think.
jfumaro 11/17/2000
Perhaps the greatest and most realistic war movie ever filmed. The opening scene portraying the D-Day invasion was so real and so overwhelming that many WWII veterans had to leave the theater. It concerned the political as well as the social parts of war. Very historical and amazing. Despite showing intense violence, it was still a stern drama.

If you want to know more about war, watch this movie. If you want to know more about pain, suffering and compassion, watch this movie. If you want to know more about your fathers and grandfathers who served and suffered because of war, watch this movie. Only then will you truly understand the post traumatic stress war creates. Forget the blood and gory scenes. Think only of the suffering these men have endured. Private Ryan expresses what the old soldier holds inside.

This movie is way overrated. As sentimental as it is the premise of our soldiers looking to save Private Ryan is plain. Long, dragging movie.
aiieria 11/06/2000
Though this was a gruesome movie, the message sent out was very touching. To see lives die in order to save another life is something rarely done and one that must have been hard to do. I can't believe they sent a school teacher to lead, and that the life that was spared was also the one that took more lives.
banana024 11/06/2000
This movie was great, but a little too gory. It depicted the war and the issue of trust and backstabbing very well. I usually don't like this kind of movie, but I loved this one.

I thought that SPR was great , I know that there are people out there that dont like seeing people getting shot in the head and seeing dead people but i thought that the film showed what really happined in WW2 and I think that it was just great :)
corboyusa 11/03/2000
The cinematography was so realistic, and the action was directed so superbly, that you felt like you were the one who was landing on Omaha Beach. It was packed with action that worked, and the story/plot reached out to the audience. You felt connected to the characters, especially Tom Hanks. The last action scene was too unrealistic.

Saving Private Ryan is a great movie. I really enjoyed this movie beacause it is a great story. It is also based on our history. The movie had great special effects.

Gave you a real appreciation for WWII. Really made you feel for the soldiers. Had you on the edge of your seat from the start.

I thought Private Ryan was a great movie because it accurately portrayed war and in particular, the D-Day invasion. It meant a lot to me because my grandfather fought it WWII and looked like the "old" Private Ryan. It gave a new generation a reminder of how we as a civilization got where we are.

Probably my favorite movie of all time up to now. A great plot, set in WWII and an off the hook cast. Not to mention the design and production. Stephen Speilberg keeps on impressing.
plur4everyone 11/02/2000
Definitely a good movie. It projected a realistic view of what happened at war time, and how soldiers risk their lives to protect others.

A wonderful telling of World War II. One of the few war movies that doesn't glorify war and violence, but shows it as one of our horrible failure in human society. A must see for those who crave a heart felt movie.

SPR was a good account of history. I like history, especially history about guys in the military.

This movie was epic. How could someone not enjoy this? It depicts what it might have really been like. Very lifelike, very cool.

Outstanding film. It gives an amazing portrayal of war and Tom Hanks deserves an Oscar for it. It's about time WWII veterans were remembered in an incredible film like this.

A movie has never effected me as much as Saving Private Ryan. I walked out of the theater in a shock. I now have the DVD and it is just an amazing movie. The writing and directing are incredible. It was done perfectly.
magellan 06/20/2000
I think what stayed with me most about this movie was not the good acting - and there was plenty of that - but the chillingly realistic, and often graphic depiction of war time violence. The opening scene in which the allies land on Normandy is shocking. The video clip style makes it seems like you are watching actual war footage, and there is plenty of gore. And if that didn't phase you, the hand to hand combat scenes a little later will. This movie is a weird example of a movie whose effects are so realistic that it actually makes the movie less enjoyable.

I don't know why.. but I like this movie. :)

Best war movie of all time. Others were good, but this one was great. The story was a little bit silly(having to save the brother), but the movie was masterfully done. Plus, as far as I know, this is the only time Tom Hanks has ever died on camera.

Saving Private Ryan did an awsome Job dipicting what war is about. It didn't over glorify what war is like. It gave a true image of war

Everyone is going to hate me for saying this, but: I hate Speilberg's movies. He's cheap and he sold out to the Hollywood hype and formula. The only good movie he ever filmed was Jaws.
