One of the "dumb" comedies that works most of the time. Lloyd Bridges was really funny as the man in charge of the airport. Robert Hayes is not one of my favorites though but he does O.K. in this part. Lots of dumb sight gags and such. Rent it.

Drinking problem!

Hilarious. Great stuff... and don't call me Shirley. :)

Excuse me, I speak jive. Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked? It cracks me up
trebon1038 03/14/2008
The puns are great. The cast is pretty good too. Stupid movie but funny because its supposed to be stupid!
twansalem 03/14/2008
Airplane! is just flat out hilarious. It ranks up there with movies like Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men In Tights as one of the best spoof movies all time. There are some classic lines that come from this movie, such as: Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious. Rumack: I am serious... and don't call me Shirley. They just don't make great spoofs anymore. Movies like the Scary Movie series are just no where near the caliber of Airplane!
SilverFox 05/18/2007
One of the all-time best comedies, a classic. Laughed until my sides ached. The rapid-fire jokes, all spoken in complete deadpan, are hilarious. They don't get much funnier than this.
PixarFan2007 05/14/2007
A pretty funny take on disaster movies. There are a lot of memorable moments.
ninjasword71 04/10/2007
Great Great comedy. Others like it are Top Secret with Val Kilmor and Scary Movie 3 and 4.
GenghisTheHun 03/02/2007
Just plain funny. Beaver Cleaver's mother talking jive really tickles the funnybone! Please read the review posted by traderboy.

"surely this film deserves 5 stars" "I disagree and don't call me shirley.
Jeremy00081 09/14/2006
Some of the jokes in this film don't work, but most of them do. The one-gag-after-another approach gets annoying at times, but I laughed myself to tears for the most part. 4 and a half stars
LastMessenger3 07/02/2006
I felt like I was losing my mind. Dark comedies aren't for me. I dislike stupidity and that ws movie is about - pure nothingness.
shroomy soup 06/28/2006
This is slapstick comedy at its best. Every scene is outrageously funny, with some great lines. I've seen this movie at least five times, and each time I try not to laugh but I just can't do it. Surely, I can't be serious! Yes, I am sure...and don't call me Shirley.
ClassicTVFan47 04/02/2006
The edited-for-television veersion is great. The theatrical version is a hundred times worse--with profanity, tasteless gags, and the exclusion of funny scenes from the original.
Silver Eagle 252 04/02/2006
Yes it's insanely stupid, but yes it's also insanely funny. It's satire, spoof and slapstick rolled into one hilarious movie. A classic comedy.
Tailhooker 11/07/2005
I will watch this whenever it comes on ( cable only !). I could probably find something funny I've missed in the past.It would be interesting to tally up "all" of the funny things in this movie. A classic that will never die.
INOitALL 10/29/2005
Classic.
CanadaSucks 10/12/2005
Somewhat dated but still has more gags per 60 seconds than any film ever. . .remember the plastic Christ giving up on Striker? Remember Lloyd Bridges doing drugs? Remember the journalists "taking pictures"? The list goes on and on. . .
traderboy 10/12/2005
I'm always taken aback by how well this film has held up over the years. Right from the opening cab sequence, you know you're going for a dippy ride you might not recover from. The Zuckers realized that such a broad satire cannot afford to let up for a single second, and they packed it with so many one-liners and sight gags that the audience had little choice but to laugh hysterically. Brilliant also for its use of a very-familiar cast of traditional players delivering dead-pan zingers and obvious comedic elements with facile style. Take your pick of scenes (Robert Hays' "what a pisser", the confusing last names of the cockpit crew, the wharf-bar disco, the captain's bizarre litany of questions aimed at the youngster, the demented Johnny (who nearly stole the show), Leslie Nielsen's overly-calm Dr. Rumack, Lloyd Bridges as the everything-addled airport director, the island Peace Corps assignment, Robert Stack's brusquely-tough-as-nails Rex Kramer, Jimmie Walker's turn as an airline mechanic, Ethel Merman in the psych ward, etc.); they're all classics you can't help but recall. The sequel tried mining the same gems years later, but fell flat (Shatner's scenes notwithstanding) with a public that'd been successfully and permanently jaded by the original. For those who dig the rapid-fire slapdash, it doesn't get much better than this slice of sunshine.
Working-Class_Hero 09/19/2005
Simply funny !!! one of my best classic comedy movies
James76255 06/12/2005
Stupid, but that't the point. One of the funniest movies ever made. Amazing how 25 years later one person quoting one line will start a flurry of quotes. Much like Caddyshack or The Blues Brothers in that sense. Be careful what line you quote and where you quote it. Have you ever seen a grown man naked? can get you in trouble.
kattwoman 06/12/2005
parodies the airplane disaster movies from around the same time. funny cast. great movie if you want to laugh.
texasyankee 04/23/2005
I don't know what it is about airplane, but I could watch it 20x and still laugh hysterically. Why can't they make stupidly hysterical movies like this anymore? As much as they try, they just never quite make it.99% of the time, it's just plain stupid.
FightingIllini 45 04/01/2005
One of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I like the part when the people on the island are dunking.
alpepper 03/18/2005
Incredibly funny movie, with a spectrum of humor from lowbrow slapstick to witty parody. The I speak jive, I like my coffee black like my men, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and the crazy dude in the control tower are just a few of many gems of priceless comedy. For continuous laughs, few movies trump Airplane.
Molfan 03/15/2005
funny movie.takes from all of the Airplane terror movies where the plane and passengers are in jeopardy.has some very funny scenes. Great take off from the Airport type movies.Leslie Neilson in particular was funny.
Mooselover 03/15/2005
Definatly one of the best comedies around. It's got loads of creatvie gags on Jaws, Saturday Night Fever, Casablanca and much more. It also has colorful characters and great one liners. Don't forget the non-stop slapstick. Is it really possible to hate this?
dj1vike 03/13/2005
For it's time, it was amusing humor. Judging whether I'd watch it as a late-nite movie on TV, probably pass...just isn't in the same league with a Caddyshack, Planes, Trains, Young Frankenstein and other true classic comedys
OldOne 02/27/2005
One of the funniest movies of all times. King Arthur vs. the Black Knight is the classic example of a lopsided battle!
jirai 01/07/2005
This is Leslie Neilsen's best movie. I love the auto pilot scenes. The sequel is a complete disappointment though.
Tuna 12/26/2004
Really great comedy. Leslie Neilsen was excellent.
Aurielle 12/24/2004
A truly crazy movie that had me both going What!?! and laughing at the same time. The way they played with words was the best, and I never get tired of this one.
synapse 11/15/2004
I've seen this movie at least six times over the years, and it *still* makes me laugh every time. There aren't many jokes that misfire, and even things that could seem like outdated humor, such as those about Kareem Abdul-Jabaar's pilot character Roger (I think you're the greatest, but my Dad says you don't play hard enough), are still very funny because of the ludicrous situation and setup that remain timeless.
5xworldchamps 11/12/2004
Funniest movie ever made. Leslie Nielsen rules. The Zucker brothers rule. They created this silly and irrelevant masterpiece. Impossible not to laugh unless you are a corpse.
Quarkie 09/11/2004
Wonderfully original (for its time) classic. Created the mold for future comedies.
VirileVagabond 08/04/2004
Released in 1980, Airplane! is the classic Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker parody of the disaster movies that were all the rage during the 1970's (eg Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure and obviously the airplane crash movies). Our hero is ex-military pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays) who is now afraid of flying; however, he chases down his estranged girlfriend who is a stewardess, Elaine Dickinson (Julie Hagerty). During the flight, food poisoning knocks out the flight crew and many of the passengers forcing Striker to fly and land the plane. Helping Striker are glue-sniffing controller McCroskey (Lloyd Bridges), his old military captain Rex Kramer (Robert Stack), and Dr. Rumack (Leslie Nielsen) who just happens to be on board the flight and did not eat the fish. With this structure, the film goes through constant puns, slapstick, and outrageous dialogue along the lines of The Naked Gun as our heroes must deal with an uncooperative autopilot, screaming passengers, a singing nun, religious zealots, and all the other stereotypes from the disaster genre. To catch all the gags, multiple viewings are necessary as usually there is something going on in the background that is often missed the first go-round. The bottom line is that, for good or ill, Airplane! is the film that started this type of over the top parody film and for that reason (if no other) this movie is a landmark release. You've got clearance Clarence; roger Roger, what's our vector Victor?

This movie was on tv a few weeks ago so its humor is fresh in my mind. Try watching it with out laughing. I bet thats impossible.
Aneudy25 07/06/2004
One of the greatest comedy movies of all-time. The director to this movie did and put all his effort into this one, I love it!!
Guava Monkey 06/04/2004
Still the best ever spoof sending up not just all those dire 1970s disaster movies but also 'Saturday Night Fever & old Bogie films. Funniest scene is the one with the blonde stewardess singing with guitar to the ill kid.
kamylienne 05/30/2004
I loved this goofy movie--may be simple humor and all, but still gets a chuckle out of me. Good if you like silly humor.
TB 303 05/07/2004
If you don't think this movie is funny then you are missing the big picture. This is a rare classic which oozes cheese like a brick of havarti after 3 minutes in the micro wave. Guy goes to take a drink and it goes all over his face....he has a drinking problem ;) So many great one liners it's just too stupid not to love it. Leslie Nielsen just plays it to the nines. Great classic.
Yorthan 04/13/2004
Five stars? Surely you can't be serious. I am serious. And stop calling me Shirley. One of those movies that's so painful, it's good.
Wise 12/31/2003
I was smoking some bud about two weeks ago and I laughed like I never laughed before. This is THE comedy movie for people who want to get high or drunk and view cinematic absurdity.
irishgit 12/17/2003
Ignorant, lowest common denominator crap. I knew better jokes when I was in Grade 5.
BugahaNE 11/16/2003

tvtator 11/15/2003
Satire at it's best.
kolby1973 11/06/2003
For personal reasons, I decided to watch this movie once again to see if I missed anything that was funny. After the 2nd viewing, I did see a few things that I missed the first time around. I guess I was a little too judgemental, HOWEVER I still don't think the movie deserves more than 2 stars, but I can see why some people would like it. And I am sure it was probably a refreshing change to some people during the year it came out. I don't think there were too many parody movies in that time frame....
riker32 11/04/2003
Punny. Gets old after a while.
