Although it family-friendly and good-natured escapism, the movie as a whole is just your typical fairy tale movie, with little else to make it interesting. The plot drags at times, the songs can become annoying and the ending isn't exactly the way that it should be. But, I must compliment the acting, which all the way around, is quite well-done.

very great classic movie. Judy Garland is a great actress. This movie will be around for a long time
tkjohns 02/11/2003
I've always loved this movie. When I was a kid it would play once a year on channel 10. It was the only night we were allowed to eat in the living room.
philc 02/11/2003
TOTO is the real star of this show and so talented and smart. Love the whole thing: stars, songs, and story.
lukskywlkr. 10/24/2002
The big daddy of all the family films. A wonderful fantasy about Dorothy getting whisked off to Oz and meeting up with many memorable characters. You could see this a hundred times and not get tired.
typhoon 07/29/2002
loved it seen it many times since i first saw it and plan to see it again
Jumping Jack Flash 07/16/2002
One of the greatest films of all time. So entrenched in our society that we forget it's a movie. But it is, an important one to our society and culture. Also, "Dark Side of the Moon" goes along with it. And that's awesome.
Prince37 07/04/2002
Greatest film of all time, starring the greatest actress of all time.
oodie 07/03/2002
this is one oif the most amazing films ever made. A true cinematic tour de force. One can watch this film with a sense of wonder throughout all the facets of their life. As a kid you watch for the magic and cartoonish horror, and later as an adult you can watch it while high or drunk(i prefer drunk) and the feeling is the same. In fact I believe that the Wizard of Oz was created by seedy 1930's hollywood drug abusers for their personal enhancement.
PrincessX 07/02/2002
There has been no greater story told than this one, and no more beautiful or talented actress has lived than Judy Garland. And, I know we're not supposed to comment on other people's comments. But, DAMN, if "Lord Of The Waves" honestly believes that ONE person did any kind of drugs because they saw "The Wizard of Oz", he/she needs real help.
antondatree 04/25/2002
Still as great as it was so many years ago. Magical, brilliant, frightening, essential, are just some of the words that could describe this great film. It has inspired so much, and those winged monkeys, the way the witch melts, the black-and-white beginning, it's timeless. Summary: A TIMELESS, ESSENTIAL, BRILLIANT, FRIGHTENING FILM.
Errol 02/22/2002
I was thrilled by it when I was a little kid. Though it still has a certain charm, I must admit it now seems kind of juvenille. But young Judy Garland - and especially Judy Garland doing "Over The Rainbow" - is almost irresistable.

Fantastic adventure! Classic story told very well in this movie. Highly recommmend.
thevirus07042 11/22/2001
How hilarious is anubis' comment???? Seriously though, i like the movie but i dont think its even great let alone one of the best movies of all time. Ignoring the fact that the director was high during most of the filming (so rumor has it) and a dead writer was actually used on the set of filming, it's a good fun entertaining movie. Top 3 of all time? Nah.
Waz22 11/10/2001
I have heard that THE WIZARD OF OZ is the most watched American movie ever made. It is, indeed, an excellent movie and I can understand why it has earned such a reputation. It appeals to the sensibility of everyone, basically. It is probably the greatest family film ever made. I remember watching this movie when I was younger. While not one of my top favorites, THE WIZARD OF OZ is an extremely entertaining movie and it deserves every bit of praise it has gotten.
ellajedlicka21 10/29/2001
I understand that this movie is a classic, but it is watched so tediously. It is very boring in my mind. I got sick after I saw the first 10 times. The story is so old and it really is so stupid when you think about what you're watching.
Lord of the Waves 10/29/2001
Doesnt make the grade. This move is unsuitable for little children yet too childish for adults. The troupe is knocked out by poppies. An educated person can tell that poppies are the producers of opium. So it implies that these heroes are really druggies. These loveable charecters whom children want to be like influence them to do things the majority of them might not have done if this movie was not shown to them.
Chaotician23 10/07/2001
Why is this so great? Huh? I've seen it many times, and may be okay for children but basically this movie sucks. It takes entertainment value and just throws it down the damn toilet.
The_Decockster 10/02/2001
The BEST movie of all time!
jayiijay 09/27/2001
Greatest family film.
Snoopy 08/17/2001
Even as a child, I hated this movie. It was so dull and predictable.
CastleBee 08/06/2001
No other film defines cinematic splendor and magical possibilities quite like "The Wizard of Oz". Whatever all the necessary elements are - and I am sure many would give their eyeteeth to be capable of completely defining them - rarely do they come together quite as distinctly as they did in this case - with just the right cast, story and enchantment to make it timeless! This never-ending success story is one of those extraordinary things you cannot plan, duplicate or mimic. Since its release in 1939, this film has been the source of wonderful childhood memories and has been loved by several generations. Its message is simple - there is no place like home and the people who love you. That point alone makes it easy to see its wide-range and lasting appeal.
joeAwaz 05/16/2001
Great fantasy story! There are very few fantasies out there that come close to the sense of awe and wonder this film projects. E.T. is the only one that comes to mind. Add that to the fact that it is has been branded onto our culture in the same vein as films like Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, Psycho and others. Great performances, excellent visuals, interesting situations and some great songs! It all adds up to one great film!
atomicsox 05/10/2001
One of the best 'suspend your disbelief and enjoy it' movies ever to come about! Dorothy is sweet, the wicked witch is a classic wicked witch inherent in all childrens nightmares, Dorothy's friends all convey the loyalty we hunger for in our friends.
callmetootie 04/05/2001
It may be one colorful movie, but The Wizard Of Oz is also a pretty dull movie. If it was all filmed in black and white, It would have recieved bad reviews, I just know it, because Judy Garland looks really old in black and white and she plays a teenager in this film, and it just doesn't look right. The scripts were also written paper thin, and they should have been written thicker.
Beatles' Fan 4 Ever 03/31/2001
I watched this movie as an annual event until I was into my 30's. It's timeless. I bought the DVD so my 4 year old granddaughter can enjoy it. Possibly the greatest movie of all time.
unkystan 03/06/2001
The perfect movie. Try to see it in a theatre and see the reactions of the other people. I've done this a few times. People unconsciously singing along and recitng dialogue, children staring in amazement. And this film is over 60 years old! The current so-called family movies (especially the Disney tripe) with all their computer effects, stereo and what have you can't hold a candle to the Wizard. Once a year? I could watch it every day!
GFunkKid 02/25/2001
I can't watch this movie without thinking about what the book meant. The book was a defense of the silver standard. Oz stands for Ounce. In Emerald City (Washington DC) everyone wears green eyeshades (they see only money). The Wizard of Oz (The US president) is just another guy with illusiory powers (do you begin to see my disappointment?) The four witches all represented people / groups, as did Dorothy's friends (I wish I could remember what!). I believe that Dorothy herself represented farmers; the moral of the story was that they had to find happiness at home, not in Washington DC.
Princess27 01/13/2001
I love this movie, it's great. My all time favorite movie next to Gone With The Wind. Whoever gave this movie a rating of one star must have had a sad, neglected childhood and I feel sorry for them.
Zarbon 01/01/2001
A true classic!!! Great songs, great characters, great story. Nice good guy/bad guys. A true classic and revolutionary in its time.

OK, OK, yeah I know Wizard of Oz, but hey, it's good. The music, colors, scenery, costumes and the overall story is all really well done. It helped to bring my creativity out more in my writing and acting. Great movie, great everything!
zalbright 10/23/2000
Unforgettably perfect movie. Deep meanings in a sweet fantasy story. Wonderful characters. I can watch it a million times and never tire of it.
mrsexwax 10/23/2000
This was one of the first movies that I remember as a kid. It was scary at the time and witty. The characters were played well to their form and the fantasy kept me on my toes, just wondering what and if Dorothy would ever make it back to Kansas.
nrice 10/19/2000
A great movie, I love it. It's just fun, especially when it turns from black and white to color.
SamIAm 10/19/2000
I love this movie. Now my kids love this movie. There is nothing like this wonderful escape into a world of fantasy where the good ones come out the victors. Sadly, I only realized in recent years that the scarecrow, tinman and the lion are the same people as those on the farm (I can be a bit slow sometimes). A great tale of friendship, determination and realization.
jfalk 10/18/2000
Judy Garland makes this movie exceptional with her excellent voice. I love it when the Witch of the West dies.
kwright 10/17/2000
Looked forward to it every year (it played annually on TV). It'a a great kids movie for the ages of 7-?. Was a little scary, but definitely fun and exciting as a little girl to watch. I liked how it represents both a good witch and a bad witch, to let children know that not all witches are evil.
jason657 10/06/2000
Good movie for kids. I enjoy the acting and find it dealing with real life fears such as the witch. Toto and the Lion are interesting yet funny.
rocker 10/05/2000
This is a great all-around movie. It is fun for the kids and adults too. My favorite character is Toto and the Wicked Witch. Good story about good and evil.
csitkoff 10/05/2000
A classic and trippy film. Whether watched along with "Dark Side of the Moon" or not, this movie rules every time. The flying monkees scene will always send chills down your spine, no matter how many times you have seen it.
mlaw10436om 09/05/2000
simply wonderful, gets better every decade !
init10288om 09/03/2000
The most magical movie ever made, and this was in 1939 !!! Puts todays "computerized" movies to shame!
jjhw10366du 09/01/2000
Wizard of Oz has great music. It appeals to childhood fantasy. The actors are great too. The characters are fun.
tmsk10342om 08/31/2000
Dorothy is boring. This movie really ruined the excellent children's books by L. Frank Baum. The direction was sloppy and the message was preachy. Housewives, bring 2 martinis and a tub of olives to make this bastardization of children's literature go down better.
Ruby 12/28/1999
You can't view this movie without being aghast at how much of our vocabulary comes from it. The whole thing has permeated popular culture like no other movie... A permanent classic.
kitt1547om 11/24/1999
This is a great movie for children or adults. The movie is great, and also the special effects.
phat1535om 11/23/1999
Without this movie, I don't think I would have had a healthy childhood.
abbe1413om 11/21/1999
For the time it was made, Wizard of Oz is an amazing film full of imagination and far before its time.
