Most overrated horror movie of all time. This movie wouldnt scare my poodle. Bad make up acting and everything else. Bride of Chucky was scarier than this joke of a movie. If i was in the room with that possessed girl i would have pooped on her face and laughed.

I will NEVER see his ABOMINATION of a film as long as I live!!!It is the MOST satanic horror film EVER!!!My 10th grade math teacher was a HUGE horror fan,but she HATED this one 'cause it was 100%BLASPHEMY!!!She says she couldn't believe they got a child to play this role!!!And my mom thinks that's tragic as well!!!Also,I cannot BELIEVE she would tell God;my FATHER f--- you!!!She outta be SHOT for saying that!!!I have heard a LOT of bad things about this GODAWFUL film!!!True christians such as myself need to stay FAR away from this film!!!Because of the subject matter!!!People need to see "The Passion Of The Christ" instead!!!
numbah16tdhaha 11/10/2005
The possessed voice kinda rules. Demonic stuff is so much better than slasher flicks, which I file under comedy. "The power of Christ compels you!"
Harry_Greb 10/29/2005
This is the scariest movie ever. Most people confuse being "terrified" with being "startled" --true terror is harder to accomplish while it is easy to startle someone with a sudden blast of music or something jumping out at you. The Exorcist made you think and there are subtle points in the movie that still haunt me years later. Two of the most terrifying scenes in the movie: Father Karras is in the room with "it" and hears a familiar voice say "can ya spare a quarter for an old altar boy father?" --it was the voice in the subway at the beginning of the movie when Karras was about to board the train. The other scene is when Karras enters the room and seems HIS DEAD MOTHER sitting there on the bed staring at him in the brightly lit room. Come on!!! No scene in Halloween comes even close to that stuff!!! The rest of the movies on this list are relatively simple-minded!

I can't even watch a scene from this movie. I saw a still photo from it and it freaked me right out. I guess it's mostly scary because it's real. I mean, not the movie, but the motive. The reality of the situation is that demonic possesion is real, and has happened before. It's not like those ghost movies, where there's no evidence that they exist. It's real, and I guess that's what freaks me out the most.
Working-Class_Hero 09/20/2005
It was extreemly scarey, and the main reason behind it is that there is no soundtrack. It was banned in my country for quite a while (years)!. but still it scares me .
iamfromhelltoo 08/12/2005
very scary
dragonx187 08/03/2005
I am not much for this series, the first one was by far the best. But to me, that is not saying alot.
kkii 07/25/2005
stupid
Randyman 06/26/2005
It might seem a little tame to a newer generation of filmgoers that grew up on more sophisticated special effects, but when it came out, this movie was one the scariest movies ever. It still holds up.
HalloweenFan 06/26/2005
not scary
sabasimba 06/22/2005
The benchmark for all horror films, past, present, and future. A classic.
kattwoman 06/16/2005

The greatness of the film, for me, is demonstrated by the fact that I'm not religious, I find the premise absurd (John Landis made the comment, and I paraphrase, 12-year old girl gets possessed by the devil and goes to pedophile priests for assistance?), and yet I still love it. Stars the great Ellen Burstyn and Max Von Sydow and even non-actor (playwright) Jason Miller is effective. Greatest of all, of course, is the make-up by Dick Smith. Despite all the advances in make-up and special effects that have been made in the years since 1973, this creation has never been matched in terms of sheer, chilling creepiness. This is the kind of no-holds barred movie they just don't make anymore, unfortunately. Can you imagine anyone putting a scene like the one with Linda Blair and the crucifix in a film today? Put this one up against the pitiful pseudo-Exorcist movie that came out last year, and you'll see how markedly the state of moviemaking has deteriorated over the past 20-30 years.

The Queen Mother of all horror movies.
thedude25 04/15/2005
Not at all scary. I am sorry, but a 12 year old kid is just not scary to me. This movie is way overrated.
joiu 03/01/2005
this film is just disturbimg you need scary exciting entertaining and have a good time to make a horror film this is just disturbing.
Maomania 02/27/2005
This movie freaked me out. Linda Blair did an amazing job, no wonder she had to go into therapy after that. The effects are very good considering that movie is from the 70's. I was disgusted at times, but I think this movies is one of the best movies of that decade. If you don't like horror movies, you might want to skip this one cause this one will freak your freak
beckerudy 02/25/2005
Almost scared me!
Rick Winters 02/06/2005
The scarriest, therefore the best.
TheNutMan 12/31/2004
In my opinion, the best horror movie ever made. At the time - great shock value, today - overall great atmosphere and as creepy as they come. The book is a fascinating read, too.
ShyNamaste 12/31/2004
There is nit enough stars in the night sky to rate this movie. Pure Horror. And I know horror.

Don't watch this movie!
jmoney52 09/24/2004
ANYTHING I COULD POSSIBLY SAY ABOUT THIS MOVIE WOULD BE A GROSS UNDERSTATEMENT. THIS IS THE DEFINITION OF HORROR. IF YOU WANT TO BE SCARED AND DISTURBED THIS ONES FOR YOU.
bibliophile 09/23/2004
This seemed really scary when I was 15, but now it's just ho-hum. Linda Blair did a fantastic job as Regan, but now the whole premise of this movie (demonic posession and exorcism of those demons) just seems contrived.
frogger20190 08/05/2004
This movie has not aged well--there are scenes (and lines of dialogue) that in 1973 must have been shocking and scary, but now seem ripe for spoofing (and in fact they have been spoofed): Father, I'm afraid my daughter.....may be possessed. What's that? Holy Water. Keep it away! But the movie still gets a thumbs up for me for its atmosphere. Chillingly directed by William Friedkin, you can literally feel the goosebumps during those horrible bedroom scenes. And there are some scenes that remain shocking--could they get away with some of the scenes today? Probably, but this most certainly would get the NC-17. Question--HOW did this get shown on network TV?
Dirty Harry 06/29/2004
Will always be a horror classic. Probably scared more people than any other movie in history. Watching it on cable TV doesn't do it justice, because it has been cut more than Jamie in Halloween. Watch the unedited version late at night if you haven't seen it.
Jamie McBain 06/19/2004
More creepy than scary.
ANSGARD 06/04/2004
i hate this film...it is not scary but it makes you paranoid
weedie 06/02/2004
I did not find it scary. I thought it was funny, but must admit that Linda Blair was totally convincing as Hillary Clinton.
WithThePenguin 05/11/2004
Yawn...i saw this movie when i was eight and it totally bored me to death...i almost fell asleep! However my 2 something year old stepbrother is still terrified that he's gonna get possesed.
MeTalhed 04/17/2004
I really didn't enjoy this movie. It was mostly dull except when the exorcism was actually taking place. Overall it was just really corny.
conhusk 04/16/2004
any horror movie associates with religion, and a small innocent child, is scary and make a good horror, and it doesn't have to take a ridiculous plot.
Jack Janet Chrissy 03/29/2004
If you like this movie something must be wrong with you. It's a sick litle movie that insults the good christain name Don't waist your'e time on sick disgusting junk.
CanadaSucks 03/29/2004
I think HALLOWEEN is better. . .The Exorcist scores high on the unintentional comedy scale when Max Von Sydow comes in as 'super priest' and starts yelling at the floating girl.
evileye 03/25/2004
ONE OF THE SCARRIEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME!! IT MAKES YOU THINK AND IT'S A GREAT CONVERSATION TOPIC!!!!
1JohnDoeFan 12/10/2003
Anyone who rated this a 1, does not understand the concept of good vs. evil to a human standpoint. A little girl isn't a monster or even a demon. She is the FREAKING DEVIL HIMSELF!!! This is definetly the scariest movie of all time. I can't watch it by myself to this day.
DeathRattle 11/04/2003
If a horror movie is able install within you an errie persence and surprise you throughout the picture, it has accomplished its main purpose. The Exorcist is the prime example of what a GOOD horror movie should be. It also helps that the picutre has a reasonable, or dare I say, good plot and brilliant acting (which is also emcompassed inside the exorcist). The film is mesmorizing all the way through. Only few can hold a candle to this great movie classic.
astroboy 08/16/2003
As a Catholic this is a very disturbing movie. It is scary in a frightening gotcha way and psychologically. This makes you think and examine your beliefs.Much like Jaws scared people out of the water, this movie scared people into church. This has to rank as one of the greatest movies of all time.I have many friends who will not watch this movie .
afterglow70 08/10/2003
Everyone compares other horror flicks to this one. Its a good one, but compared to movies today, it still ranks up there w/ the best.
laserblaze21 08/09/2003
The Ezorcist was a pretty good movie. It wasn't scary (except for the spiderwalk thing, phew) Its definitly not a masterpiece. It has its moments that I wanted to go sleep cause most of the parts were really boring. It could have been better if they got rid of all the boring talking parts that last for like,an hour in total.First there's a "creepy" part in the movie, then they start talking. Its not a very smooth, fast paced movie but I recommend this movie.
kolby1973 07/11/2003
I will definately say that this horror movie is one of my favorite to date. I didn't like the year it came out, and it definately needs a remake done. But this movie is definately a classic. Kinda scary, too.
$$TOMMY$$ 07/10/2003
the scarest film of all time and i've saw them all
JimmyInAtlanta 06/27/2003
This movie is about everything - life after death, belief in Heaven and Hell, the breakdown in the 60s & 70s of the American family, the effect of puberty on a child and a parent, loss of faith, Christianity's beginnings (the beginning sequence in the middle east is a wonderful Kubrickian omen that evil is coming - like the old traditions of the East are cursing the values of the West), what medicine doesn't know about the brain, and perhaps most disturbing, the sexuality of a pubescent. I think that's the one that bothers people the most. I'm stunned that so much taboo went into this movie. It's an amazing movie. It still makes me very uneasy to watch it.
Kat25 06/20/2003
A Classic in it's time, this movie had everything. However nowadays people who are seeing it for the first time find it *boring* after all they have been raised on Jason, Freddy, and Micheal.
kuppie21 06/19/2003
I know this movie was made when I born and I would probably would have been scared and all but I saw it a couple of years ago and I laughed I don't see nothing scary about it.
ozzymaniac 06/17/2003
The best horror film ever. Easily. Great acting; Great directing; Great thrills; Great chills; Great film.
twinmom101 06/06/2003
This movie is a strange part of my life. When I was five and staying with relatives, this movie came on and I was supposed to be in bed sleeping, but I was on the staircase watching this through the posts of the bannister. A pretty obvious word of advice is- don't let anyone under the age of 16 see this, as I seriously had horrible nightmares and problems at night for a good ten years afterwords. It affected me so much that I became facsinated with the religion behind the Exorcist and studied Babylonian religion in college. The demon that possesed Regan really existed in the babylonian pantheon- it's called Pazuzu and was known as the god of the foul south wind that brought disease and pestlilence. There is even a statue of it at the British museum. The comments everyone else has made here say it all- this is by far the most disturbing and unsettling movie ever made and can have a deep psychological impact on a person as I can personally attest. The book is excellent as well and worth a read and re-read.
